💕 Home from Home 💕 It dawned on me that most of my posts document the Little Buds' wonderful adventures; our exploration into the world around us - trips and visits to the local care home/museums/library/allotment and parks. (A strong experiencial understanding of the world around them helps develop a childs cultural capital, giving confidence in the face of new challenges - which is a huge part of what Little Buds Childminding strives to provide!), but that's not the whole of it.... The Little Buds start and end their day in my home 🏡 Sometimes, that's where we stay, playing, reading, laughing, cooking, and learning together 🥰 We have an open plan home where the children are welcomed in and treated as one of the family. The Little Buds are invited to explore resources and equipment and are able to choose and access their favourite items as they wish. The bookshelf selection is curated by the children themselves on our library visits, and resources are bought/chosen and sometimes made to support a child's interests or ignite a new passion! The children have open access to the garden with mud kitchen, playhouse, slide, gravel pit and water trays - so even at home wellies and splashsuits, (and quite often a complete change of outfit), are a daily necessity 🙈😂 The curriculum offered to The Little Buds includes all learning areas of the EYFS statutory framework with activities that meet each child at their personal stage of development, with a key focus being on developing each childs confidence and independence. Our time shared together at 'Roz's House' is where most of this happens 💕 Our meals are shared around the table with conversations encouraged to develop speaking and listening and positive communication. The children are invited to make snack and meal requests which are added to our menu, giving the children autonomy wherever possible, and our self care cart allows the children to access their own water bottles and hand towels with a mirror to clean up whenever they feel the need helping develop their personal and emotional health and wellbeing 💕 #homefromhomechildcare #eyfs #childrenswellbeing #childledplay #childcareeducator

🫶Submission Day🫶 It's hard to believe I am posting this today!!! I am feeling a range of emotions from pride, disbelief, elation, and exhaustion all at the same time! This was a hard slog, I am not going to lie. It highlights the end of my four years training to become a Child and Adolescent Psychotherapist with a specialism in Play Therapy (bit of a mouthful)with CTC @siobhan_childrenstherapycentre. Everyone is asking what's next?? All I can think about right now is that I am going to rest, take time to let it all sink in, and relearn how to sit down without the computer on my lap. I just wanted to thank everyone who followed my journey along the way. I am excited for the many new ventures ahead... I have so many ideas going around in my head both for my teaching world and the therapy world, but for now, I'll take a breath! This is why I do what do… This week a young boy came to his regular session after an incredibly challenging day which had resulted in several spikes in aggression during the day. Not great for anyone involved. His wellbeing session was therefore centred around decompression, calm and relaxing fun. No demands! By doing this he’d managed to charge his social battery just enough to face the rest of the day in a calmer place. 💙 Does anyone else find the summer term the hardest term of the school year, especially for younger children? With so many demands (I appreciate many of which are created with the intention of fun) it’s just too overwhelming and worse for some. It has proved to be a success with the children, and in fact two children in particular who have struggled previously to engage had particularly good sessions when we used it so that is testament in itself. “BUSINESS-LIKE” COPARENTING Navigating co-parenting following divorce or separation can be tricky. It’s normal for things to feel messy or chaotic for a while and it can be difficult to separate the emotions from the parenting relationship. In mediation, we often talk about a ‘business-like’ approach. You don’t have be best friends with your ex, but your children will benefit from you being able to communicate in a respectful and business-like way, simply about their needs. Just as in a business, communication can be via email in order to keep communication civilised and provide some boundaries for the parenting relationship. There are also some fantastic apps such as @ourfamilywizard to help you keep communication open and positive. When you are in a business, you communicate for the primary purpose of the business and it is often not appropriate to share personal information with each other. By communicating in a similarly boundaried way, it can help you to reboot the parenting relationship slowly and safely, and work up to a more easy-going and flexible relationship in the future. When communicating with your co-parent, it can helpful to ask, ‘Would I speak to a business colleague like this?’ Positive co-parenting requires a blend of respect, communication, and setting clear boundaries. As I delved into the diverse education systems worldwide, it became evident that each reflects the unique priorities and cultural nuances of its respective country. While these systems can vary significantly in the experiences they offer to youth, I've identified common threads shared among several. Last week I was excited to visit a local primary school to work with Year 6 before SATs. The school has been so fantastic to invest in sessions across the year groups for the past academic year but these sessions were just for Year 6. We spent two lovely mornings working on creating Calm Boxes to help them in the term ahead. SATs, saying goodbye to their primary school, going to a new school, potentially not being with friends as much anymore...that's a lot to deal with!  We went over strategies we had previously learnt for example mindful breathing and how it's entirely normal for different feelings to be visiting. They made Affirmation Art with important phrases to them and they designed their own Amygdala warriors after reading the fantastic Hey Warrior (more about this book soon as I love it so much!). They reminded themselves of how unique and special they are by taking home a mini diamond (not real unfortunately!) and the individuality of their Calm Boxes was striking. We enjoyed meditations and some mini mindful moments and movements throughout. I left with a heart full of joy and gratitude that I got to spend time with them. "In the UK and Ireland, 9 out of every 10 girls with low body esteem put their health at risk by not seeing a doctor or by skipping meals" (Dove, 2021). Let that sink in. Body image and self-esteem influence each other. Whilst low self-esteem isn't a standalone condition it can present alongside many other conditions. These include: 💡 Anxiety 💡 Personality Disorders 💡 Depression 💡 Bipolar Disorder 💡 Eating Disorders such as anorexia and bulimia. Signs and behaviours for parents to look for: * Your child is self-critical - 'everyone is better than me. * Avoidance of challenges - thinking they will fail. * Struggles to accept praise. * Struggles to take criticism. * Worries about other people's opinions of them. * Lost interest in school. * No interest in succeeding - they feel others are at a higher level. * Mood swings. * Strongly influenced by peer pressure. * They become controlling to hide their feelings - low self-worth and powerlessness. * Negative thoughts and feelings about their body. I have thought long and hard about this post and I want to fight for children's mental health - they are struggling a lot. The pandemic has pushed them beyond their limits. Self-harm affects 1 in 12 people, 10% of those are 15-16 year olds. Self-harm is a behaviour, not an illness. Young people self-harm to communicate distress or to cope with emotional distress. Behaviours include: 🚧 over-doses. 🚧 self-poisoning. 🚧 minor injury. 🚧 dangerous and life - threatening injury. 🚧 some feel suicidal others do not. Self-harm can occur at any age but is most common in adolescence. Each person will have a different trigger factor. If you are self-harming or thinking about self-harming, speak to an adult or someone you trust. It could be a teacher, relative, doctor or youth worker. Injuries should be treated straightaway. JOURNALLING FOR LITTLE BUGS You're probably sick to death of hearing how fantastic journalling is for mental health. I'm a firm believer that getting my thoughts out on paper is crucial for me to feel good, but lately I've been wondering about how we can pass on the benefits of journalling to our little ones - particularly non-writers. I've come up with a few ideas to try + make journalling accessible to little ones... 🐞 Meal-time conversation: Take a journal prompt like the one above, + talk it through with your minibeast. Make sure you give everyone enough time to formulate answers - you're aiming to help your little one get their thoughts out in the open, + that can be tricky! You might want to model an answer first, or let your little one lead the way - it's entirely up to you. Note: I've mentioned meal-time as it's a great way to gather the family, + have little bugs contained, but this could also work in the car, bath, before bed... whatever works for you! 🦋 Free mark-making: for those of you who do have a journal practice, have you ever considered journalling alongside your little bug? A notepad + pen each, + time to scribble down your thoughts - or simply scribble! In my experience little ones are more likely to engage in mark-making when they have 'adult' tools, + modelling alongside your little bug can enhance concentration + motivation. The act of making marks can be a cathartic release in itself - prompt your little one to make angry lines, or happy ones, or sad ones... the end result can be eye-opening! Another tip: timing is everything. Try to choose a point in the day when your little bug is well-rested, + there are few distractions. And if it doesn't work, try again another time - there's no right or wrong way, this is supposed to be a fun way to connect with your child! If you do have a try at these, let me know how it goes!
