Should I do a “leg” day and an “arms” day? From my earliest memories of lifting weights I remember doing a lot of bicep curls, tricep kickbacks, and reps on the hamstring machine. These are examples of body part training - focusing on one specific muscle group at a time. It’s not that isolating specific body parts is wrong. In fact, if you’re a body builder, figure competitor, or want to strengthen or enhance a specific muscle group - it’s a great way to train. But, if you’re like my typical client, a busy mom or woman who wants to lose weight and feel better - all in minimal time - arm day/leg and body part splits aren’t ideal. The most efficient and effective way to strength train is with FULL body workouts. Here’s why: ➡️Full-body strength training challenges you to work more muscles at once, which helps burn more calories in a shorter period of time. Not only do you burn more calories in that one workout - you stimulate more muscle growth in that one session. The more muscle you have - the more calories you burn when you workout, move, and rest. By breaking strength workouts into split body part training - you have to do more workouts in order to accomplish what you can in one full body workout. Full body strength training helps you train more in less time. For example, instead a bicep curl - opt for a squat with a curl to press! 💪 ➡️Another benefit to full-body strength training is an improvement in core strength. When you require your whole body to move as a unit your core will have to get stronger to support you. Having a strong core will help you in everything you do! ➡️Plus, your coordination will improve. A stronger core plus better coordination when you move will help you in the gym and all physical aspects of life. There’s no feeling like the feeling of being strong 💪🏻 🔹 Strength Tip: push rep maxes before pushing heavy singles up. I don’t like maxing beginners out. Depending on the persons training age and experience (not necessarily the same thing always) I’ll hit a 3-5 rep max on heavy compound movements like a squat, press, hinge, and pull or if they’re more novice it’ll be an 8-12 rep max instead on similar movements. 🔹 You don’t need to kill yourself obviously your primary (A series) movement every workout. Use rating of perceived exertion as your guide (RPE) to dial in appropriate intensity. But still train hard. An RPE 6-9 should be used depending on the training cycle, usually RPE 7-8 most of the time at the start of a block. 🔹 Selecting the right exercises to address your weaknesses is huge and usually leads to leaps like this in strength gain. If you’re looking to get on an actual program and not a series of random gym workouts that don’t actually get results, apply for everyday athlete coaching with the link in the bio.
