Happy humpday!! For #WhatToReadWednesday I offer one of my favorite books, Perfume, by Patrick Süskind. It's about a baby born without a scent and is looked at as an outcast but is determined to live his life through smell, aroma, odor, anything related to scent. It's a dark historical fantasy rooted in realism, ripe with murder and unkindness. Fun fact, Perfume was one of Kurt Cobain' favorite books and inspired him to write the song "Scentless Apprentice" on the In Utero album 🤘 #Perfume #patricksuskind #novel #paperback #fantasy #darkfantasy #Nirvana #kurtcobain #scentlessapprentice #horrorishealing #horrorishealty #literature #bookstagram #bookerd #bookworm #readingisfun #bibliophile #books #book #booksofinstagram #bookaholic #read #reader #reading #bookish

What to Read Wednesday? A Thousand Words, the dramatic damsel-in-distress debut novel of Rachel Banks, addresses issues of victimization and healing from distressing events. At times, it was lighthearted and humorous but, more often, the tone delved deeper into the damaged psyche of two teens who had suffered unspoken trauma at the hands of others. Amongst the antagonizers were complete strangers, star schoolmates, and former BFFs. Some of the bullying melodrama which played out had a believable if not anticipated feel. (The new kid at school arrives on the scene with horror-movie-like scars on his face causing some of his classmates to recoil while the crueler tormentors resign to name calling.) However, some of the harassment the us-against-the-world pair receives crosses beyond the boundary of bullying into a realm where pure evil dwells. Intense, life-and-death scenes as well as flashbacks of attacks on both victims malign an otherwise mildly dramatized coming-of-age romance. A loving, all-for-one-and-one-for-all sibling group with sneaky habits and concerning parental issues plays backdrop for the lead female, Olivia, while her male counterpart’s background remains more obscure. What is to be understood is that Louis’ home life is just as much or more complicated than that of his love interest. Fraught with misunderstanding in the beginning, the pair eventually smooths out their misunderstandings and conflicts. But when a dispute separates the two, intense drama plays out during a dangerous showdown between disadvantaged victim and oppressor. However, true to the damsel-in-distress trope, the hero remembers his love for the girl and rushes to her aid. Does Louis arrive in time? Or is Olivia destined to succumb to the fury of her greatest enemy? If one can extend the author grace for sporadic proofreading errors and leaving a lose end or two dangling (sequel maybe?), they will find within these pages a romantic drama with fierce transparency and emboldening bravery. #WhatToReadWednesday #romanticdrama #romancebookworm #romancereads #romancebookseries #romancebookrecommendations

The Five Year Lie ~ Sarina Bowen ❔ What’s your fav kind of thriller❔ 🌟Book Tour🌟 Pub Date: May 7, 2024 Thank you, partner @bibliolifestyle @harperperennial 🤍 I am so looking forward to diving into this one! Make sure ya’ll read this synopsis because it sounds like it’s going to be an amazing debut! SYNOPSIS 👇🏼 Bestselling romance author Sarina Bowen’s debut thriller, about one woman’s search for the truth after receiving a text from her deceased ex. She thought it was love. Then he vanished. On an ordinary Monday morning, Ariel Cafferty’s phone buzzes with a disturbing text message. Something’s happened. I need to see you. Meet me under the candelabra tree ASAP. The words would be jarring from anyone, but the sender is the only man she ever loved. And it’s been several years since she learned he died. Seeing Drew’s name pop up is heart-stopping. Ariel’s gut says it can’t be real. But she goes to the tree anyway. She has to. Nobody shows. But the text upends everything she thought she knew about the day he left her. The more questions she asks, the more sinister the answers get. Only two things are clear: everything she was told five years ago is wrong, and someone is still lying to her. The truth has to be out there somewhere. To safeguard herself—and her son—she’ll have to find it before it finds her. And with it, the answer to what became of Drew. For fans of Laura Dave and Julie Clark, but with a heart-stopping romance that only Sarina Bowen can execute, The Five Year Lie is a page-turning, spine-tingling thriller that will have you guessing until the very end. #bibliolifestyle #serinabowen #thefiveyearlie #thefiveyearliethriller #thrillerbooks #thrillerbookstagram #bookstagram #thrillerreads #booksbooksbooks #booklove #bookfeatures #bookpics #booksandflowers #bookedup #booksinthewild #booklife #whattoreadwednesday #onwednesdayswereadpink

Happy Pub Day to my current read! 🥳📖💜✨ Thank you @mbc_books and @amazonpublishing for the free book.⁣ ⁣ Happy Wednesday, y’all!⁣ ⁣ I’m excited to be part of the Bookstagram Tour for THE LETTERS WE KEEP by Nisha Sharma ( @nishawrites ). Today is its pub day and for my fellow kindle unlimited subscribers, it is available for you to read AND listen to for free! ⁣ ⁣ I am about a quarter of the way through this new adult romance set on a college campus where our polar opposite FMC, freshman Jessie and MMC, senior Ravi are about to embark on a dare to determine who gets to use their preferred study room in the library for the rest of the year. ⁣ ⁣ Jessie is a scholarship student with a chip on her shoulder that is admittedly annoying at times. Ravi is the son of a tech billionaire who wants to forge his own path. ⁣ ⁣ Will these budding enemies turn into lovers while trying to solve a decades old mystery concerning two star-crossed lovers? I certainly hope so and can’t wait to find out! ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ 💬 Where was your favorite place to study during college? OR Did you ever wear pajamas to class? OR What are your favorite romance tropes? ⁣ ⁣ 💁🏻‍♀️ I’ll go first: I liked studying in our gorgeous university library at one of the large tables near a wall of windows. I NEVER wore pajamas to class, but there were usually some classmates who did. 😂 My favorite romance tropes are enemies-to-lovers and second chance romance. ⁣ ⁣ Wishing you all a lovely evening.⁣ ⁣ xoxo,⁣ Mel⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ #TheLettersWeKeep #RomanceReader #WhatToReadWednesday #CurrentlyReading #DiverseSpines ⁣ ⁣

What to Read Wednesday! My recommendation this week has a tie-in to my recent novel, The Improbable Existence of Life After Divorce (or TIEofLAD). Stem Bik may not be the protagonist in TIEofLAD but he's arguably the best character. However, since this deuteragonist is Australian, it was vital before publishing that I get feedback on the character from an Aussie's perspective. My brother-in-law, Travis, was perfect for the role. You see, not only is he American but he's also Australian. Right away after beta reading my novel, Travis remarked that Stem reminded him very strongly of Don Tillman, the main character in The Rosie Project. Both are Australians and college professors. Both have unusually quirky personalities. And both are likely on the autism spectrum. Though I had never heard of The Rosie Project, I knew I had to check it out! On a long car ride by myself, I indulged in this audiobook. (I love audiobooks but hardly ever get to listen to them!) I can't tell you how many times I nearly swerved off the road laughing out loud at the hilarious antics of Professor Don Tillman and the motley cast. Here's my official review: The Rosie Project was filled with wonderfully crafted, vivid characters who punctuated each scene with their witty banter and charmingly dysfunctional behaviors. Humor at its finest (albeit in colorful language, as is typical for many Aussies), this novel is sure to bring a smile to your face and maybe a good belly laugh or two or three or twenty. #WhatToReadWednesday #WhatToRead #bookrecommendations #funnybooks #quirkybook #booktok

Today for #WhatToReadWednesday, Isaiah, the Senior Librarian at 81st Ave branch recommends The Covenant of Water by Abraham Verghese. Isaiah writes: "The Covenant of Water" by Abraham Verghese is a literary masterpiece that flawlessly unfolds as a transgenerational family saga of a South Indian family. Skillfully intertwining medicine and storytelling, Verghese takes readers on an emotional journey from joy to sadness while fearlessly challenging societal norms of class, caste, and gender roles. The impeccably developed characters, with all their flaws, make it easy to fall in love with each one. Against the backdrop of a changing India, the novel provides a captivating portrayal of an evolving family. For enthusiasts of historical fiction and transgenerational family sagas, this book is a compelling read that elicits both laughter and tears, often simultaneously, creating an unforgettable literary experience that is hard to put down." What are you reading? Here’s a look at some of the books I’ve read recently. As you can see, I tend to read across formats multiple books at a time. Anyone else read this way too? Audiobook: I checked out How to Plot a Playback by @ourfriendlyfarmhouse on my Libby app. This was a fun enemies to lovers romcom with a sitcom writer and a Hollywood darling. I liked how it was more of a one sided enemies to lovers and that Lavender was simply too kind and charming to hate. Both narrators did a great job with the British accents and I found it enjoyable to listen to. It was a cute story. Physical book: I read an ARC of The Orchids of Ashthorne Hall. I was intrigued by the gothic/haunting aspects of the book; it’s always neat to learn something new about history. Ebook: I was excited to read this sequel, The Reign of Rosemund by @micheleabell and I really liked how the story kept surprising me with what was happening next. It was a good medieval story that held my attention and I found to be an enjoyable read. It’s clean and though there is war and fighting, it wasn’t graphic at all. I was on the edge of my seat worried about how things would all turn out, but rest assured, the ending is good. #libbyapp #librarybook #whatiamreading #whattoreadwednesday #moodreader #readingforfun #readhowyouwant #cleanreads

#WhatToReadWednesday Menace by Authorklmyers https://amzn.to/3vtskU7 Family isn't about blood. It's about loyalty and trust, and the Hells Guardians MC was the only family Menace McAllister cared about. Abandoned by his mother at birth, he was raised by his brother until he was eight. The day Hunter McAllister left, Menace was forced to survive with a father who despised him. He became a loner, closing out the world around him. On his eighteenth birthday, he found his way to Hells Creek, WY, where the MC took him in. Over the years, Menace proved his loyalty as a prospect and then as their Sgt. at arms. The club became his salvation, his life, but it all came at one expensive cost—loving Clover, the president's niece, from afar. When a rival club kills all but one member of their Arizona Chapter, life as Menace knew it ceases to exist. Just when he believed he had it all figured out, he learns of a secret his brother has been keeping from the club. Things couldn't get more complicated. That is until Clover went missing. For the first time ever, his loyalty was being tested—club or brother. It was him against the world once again, but the stakes were much higher this time. #MCRomance #romanticsuspense #kindleunlimited

In honor of today being both my birthday and National Siblings Day (obviously, they chose this date for the holiday since I'm the best sibling in the nation 😅), my What To Read Wednesday recommendation is . . . The Pleasure of My Company by Steve Martin. This unpredictable, charmingly hilarious novella was given to me for my birthday last year by one of my brothers. As told from main character's pov, Daniel Pecan Cambridge's internal life is just as strange and complicated as his external existence. Is he a Mensa genius—or a dozen numbers short of the triple digits? Did he commit a murder—or was he the victim in a twisted crime? And will he ever risk crossing the street where there is no curb to see if true love awaits him on the other side? Highly recommend! #WhatToReadWednesday #bookrecommendation #stevemartin #thepleasureofmycompany #funnybooks

🤞🏼April Hopefuls🤞🏼 ❔What’s a book you can’t wait to read❔ Since I’m still super into reading physical books, I set my sights a little high hoping I can keep chipping away at the ol’ TBR 🤍 I do have a couple ebooks and audiobook arc’s I’d also like to get to! Here’s to trying to stick with a monthly physical tbr because it makes my little organized heart happy 😆 last month I read every physical book minus one, but I switched it for a different book so I feel like it still counts 😂 I also realized I don’t ever make a kindle tbr or audiobook tbr lol I kinda just mood read those ones or switch the genre based on the physical book I’m reading. Anyone else do that? April Lineup 👇🏼 - Final Girls by @riley.sager 📱 - Pack Up the Moon by @kristan.higgins 📖 - The Four Winds by @kristinhannahauthor 📖 - Too Late by @colleenhoover 📖 - The House in the Cerulean Sea by T.J. 👋🏽 It’s been a while since I last posted! Don’t have much to say really, so thought I’d share my most recent book mail! This arrived a week or so ago - The Sunlit Man by Brandon Sanderson. This was the last of his Secret Projects novels from last year and I enjoyed this one! I love anything connected to the Cosmere. Booksta has taken a back seat for me for now. I’m still present but not posting much. I am reading a lot though, so that’s positive! I am currently on school holidays so am enjoying some quiet time at home. Let’s see if I can find some motivation to take some photos for Booksta 😁. • 🦠🧬🩸 • #brandonsanderson #thesunlitman #secretproject #cosmere #cosmerenovel #sandersonspotlight #newbook #hardcoverbook #bookshelf #bookshelfdecor #bookshelfstyling #bookshelfgoals #sandersoncollection #favouriteauthor #fantasyreader #fantasybooks #fantasyreads #bookmail #booktopia #schoolholidays #wednesdaymotivation #whattoreadwednesday #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #australianbookstagram #aussiereaders #ausbookishfeatures #australiaisreading #ausyabloggers

Today for #WhatToReadWednesday, Librarian Nichole at the Elmhurst branch, recommends The Fall That Saved Us by Tamara Jerée. Nichole writes: "This is a love story between two women who have experienced a lifetime of hurt and trauma; one is a retired demon hunter, and the other is a demon. This love story puts you on the edge of your seat in suspense and will have you rooting for the couple to find their happily ever after. If you are familiar with paranormal romance, you might expect the traditional angel/demon love story. I am happy to tell you the story does not follow the typical trope, and you will be surprised by the ending." Today for #WhatToReadWednesday, Sharon the Teen Librarian, recommends Hungry Ghost by Victoria Ying. Sharon writes: "In this gorgeous graphic novel a teenage girl manages to keep her serious eating disorder a secret from everyone who cares about her until, facing deep grief and loss, she realizes she needs some help. The format doesn't allow for deep exploration with words, but does give an intimate portrayal of a complicated mother daughter relationship, mental health struggles, grief and friendship and the art suits the story perfectly, bringing emotion and feeling to the forefront." Whenever I’m stuck for posts — which is happening more and more often these days and I feel my Booksta is dying a very slow death — I tend to browse my shelves looking for a book to highlight and my eyes are always drawn to Starling by Kirsten Cram @kirstencramwriting. Not only does it have a pretty cover, it is a beautiful story of friendship. We see so many popular authors and their books doing the rounds on Booksta all the time, but I want to share the magic of Starling with you. Read it. You will love it. I wrote a review when I initially read Starling, so I’ll find it and share it in my stories. • 🌡️🩸🦠 • #kirstencram #starling #bookrec #bookreccomendation #readthisbook #independentauthor #indieauthor #indiebooks #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #australianbookstagram #aussiereader #ausbookishfeatures #australiaisreading #ausyabloggers #readya #yabooks #yafiction #youngadultbooks #youngadultfiction #literaryfiction #contemporaryfiction #alwaysreading #whattoreadwednesday #wednesdaymotivation #wednesdayvibes #wednesdaymood #booksbooksbooks #bookshelf #bookshelfgoals

Today for #WhatToReadWednesday, Brian Guenther, Senior Librarian at the Rockridge branch, recommends I Never Thought of It That Way by Monica Guzman. Brian writes: "I Never Thought if It That Way is an inspiring call to action for civility when it seems so much easier to dismiss or demonize those who think differently than us. Using an engaging, conversational tone, Guzmán goes deep into how to open your mind, be curious, and have meaningful conversations that otherwise may be contentious."
