I thought I would have a lot to say once I reached this milestone, but I find myself so overwhelmed with emotion to find the words to adequately articulate just how very much this means to me. As we age, the neuromuscular system—comprising the interaction between the nervous system and muscles—undergoes various degenerative changes. One significant aspect of this decline is the reduction in motor unit recruitment. Motor units consist of a motor neuron and the muscle fibers it innervates. As we get older, the number of functional motor units decreases due to the death of motor neurons, and the remaining motor neurons may not be as efficient in recruiting muscle fibers. Additionally, nerve conduction velocity, which is the speed at which electrical signals travel through nerves, slows down with age. This results in slower and less efficient muscle contractions. To combat this decline, strength training, especially that which involves big compound movements (exercises that engage multiple joints and muscle groups, such as squats, deadlifts, and bench presses), is highly beneficial. Compound movements are effective because they stimulate a large number of motor units across multiple muscle groups simultaneously. This comprehensive engagement promotes better neuromuscular coordination and muscle fiber recruitment. Heavy resistance training also requires the activation of a greater number of motor neurons to generate the necessary force. This high level of recruitment helps to maintain and even improve the efficiency and capacity of the neuromuscular system. By consistently challenging the muscles and nervous system with heavy loads, it is possible to slow the age-related decline in motor unit function and nerve conduction speed. The benefits of such training extend beyond just maintaining muscle mass and strength. New research highlights that not all protein supplements are equal for aging muscles 👀 In a recent study, older men increased their muscle protein synthesis significantly when adding whey or pea protein to their diets, compared to collagen, which showed no change. This suggests that the type of protein, not just the quantity, is crucial in combating age-related muscle loss. Similarly if your goal is hypertrophy or increasing strength, collagen might not be the best choice. 🏋️‍♂️🥛💪 This study examines the impact of different protein supplements (whey, pea, and collagen) beyond the RDA on muscle protein synthesis (MPS) in older males. It found that both whey and pea protein significantly increased MPS rates compared to collagen, which did not change MPS rates. The study concludes that while increasing protein intake can enhance MPS, the type of protein is crucial for overcoming age-related anabolic resistance in older adults. The trial underscores the need for targeted nutritional strategies to combat sarcopenia.
