I love a good, productive day. Especially when you’re surrounded by like-minded people who want to listen to your words — I mean, what’s more gratifying than that? Maybe when they rush to get signed copies of your book later? Yes, that. Definitely that. 🥰 It was 2020, I was stuck in a limbo like most of us during the pandemic when I began to write this book, mostly to understand the complexity of my own emotions. The theme of “letting go” simply came to me because that’s what I needed to do at the time. And I wanted to turn this into a book so that people who could relate, would also be comforted by my words. All my journal entries started to look like poetry and I wanted to put my raw, non-linear, messy, first-draft feelings into this one cohesive place, and call it a garage sale. A Garage Sale of Lovelorn Things isn’t exactly a book that screams commercial writing. It is deeply personal. It is my diary in a manner of speaking. Which is why when I witness the love it’s been getting since it was published in 2021, I feel loved too. Your appreciation and support helps me more than you can imagine. So thank you for that. It is almost the end of Mental Health Awareness Week in Canada. I was discharged from a Mental Health unit on Monday after spending three months there. Here are my random thoughts on that. I’m still processing. 💚I didn’t realize how it still makes me cry talking about this. 💚When I say three months and only outside for 20 minutes 2 times the last few days of my stay. 💚They say fresh air and sunlight is good for mental health then stick me in a room with no windows 💚 I stared at the walls in the windowless room and wanted to scream 💚I’m in the world again. It’s overwhelming too. 💚 I didn’t realize how fragile I’ll still feel (both physically and mentally). 💚I want to show you I’m capable. 💚I still need rest 💚I’m afraid, I’m so afraid of breaking down again. Today, we have a comparison: the same poem, one written in Shakespearean Sonnet form, the next written in free verse. This is to show that, while most contemporary poets lean on free verse, there are other styles out there! I love free verse, of course, but I am really trying to challenge myself. In the sonnet version (slide 1) I appreciate the difficulty of fitting all my thoughts into a measly 14 lines, as I think it really gets to the heart of my point. In the free verse version (slide 2) I appreciate the ultra-specific imagery and personal details because it allowed for a bit more metaphorical play.
