I first discovered VanderMeer after watching Alex Garland's adaptation (which I loved, and I think there's a case to be made of it being one of the greatest cosmic horror films ever made) back in 2018. I distinctly remember that after finishing Annihilation and moving on to Authority, some writerly mechanism in shifted to a gear I didn't know existed. What that gear is? No idea. Maybe not being afraid of taking chances or leaning into ambiguity. Blah blah blah, whatever; Jeff VanderMeer is one of a handful of authors who've had a direct influence in my approach to storytelling and story structure. Oh. And Authority is in my top 15 novels of all time. Just when I thought my bookshelf couldn’t handle another mystery novel, along comes a genre mashup that’s like finding an old, spooky, cobweb-covered treasure chest in the attic of a haunted Victorian mansion. Folks, I’ve stumbled upon a new favorite concoction of storytelling: historical murder mystery ghost story cozy romantic horror. Yeah, it’s a mouthful. Oh! And it’s a great example of why we choose the bear. The plot: 1920s post-war England country-side. I wanted something that touched on all of the above genres but also explored humanity and relationships (I am heavily influenced by A24 films and Denis Villeneuve*). Since I wasn’t finding what I was looking for, I wrote it myself. Groundhog Day - my tutor once told me that a university in the US created a formula for the perfect movie and when every movie was fed through that formula Groundhog Day came out as technically the most perfect movie ever made. Although I disagree I could definitely see how that might be the case when you apply a formula. Groundhog Day is such a simple premise and most people are quick to dismiss it as just a comedy. It's a genius screenplay and it's both peak Bill Murray and Harold Ramis! Cleverly woven story arch's that involve comedy, drama, sci fi, time travel, action, even elements of existential horror! It deals with eternity, religion, time, the meaning of life, morals & ethics and it does all this in a phenomenal run time and breathtaking pace with a neat bow to tie everything together at the end. All that and we haven't even talked about the rest of the cast, the clever setting, and beautiful location. This will remain a classic forever ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
