Today, I graduated from the University of Miami Frost School of Music majoring in music education and studying jazz trombone! @frostschoolum has been such an incredible environment for me these past 4 years. This school and the people here have truly helped me build myself into a joyful, confident, and fearless musician. So much of this experience came unexpectedly, and that is the best part of it all. A lot of life comes unexpected, and with that brings some of the best experiences. From writing for 3 big bands to student teaching to playing lots of gigs in Miami, I’m so happy with all I have been able to do here so far. When I first started college, I was On My Own for the very first time, not sure what to expect—especially with all of the COVID restrictions. Soon, though, UM and Frost became this environment bustling with energy and full of opportunity, regardless of major or interests. My major brought a lot for me, but I didn’t let it limit what I could do for a career. If anything, Frost let me break the walls of what is possible and build a multi-faceted career doing what I love. It was truly Meant to Be. My studies posed a great deal of challenges, as juggling many interests posed a lot of work. I had to find balance in my life, keeping my creativity and optimism intact. But, There’s Still Hope—even in the most difficult of semesters, the Frost community kept me going and brought so many fun times and late nights. As I was inching towards being 99 Percent finished of every semester, our hard work and tiredness turned into an experience that is so worth it. Now, as I begin my graduate studies and continue sharing my creative vision, I’m very excited about Where I’ll Go Now. I recently finished orchestrating these 50 little fugues by Johann Ernst Rembt (1749-1810), a German composer and organist. He had originally written them for organ, but I thought they suited my purpose to practise orchestration very well.
This is a double-fugue for orchestra I composed for a contest in 2013. The orchestral parts are doubled by two pianos in this version.
