We came across swathes of wild garlic on our walk to Haddo House yesterday. Wild garlic is a popular plant to forage, and as a folk witch, I love me a good forage. But I decided not to take any for several reasons. 1- its on a popular walk for people and dogs, it’s probably covered in dog piss. 2- I don’t need any. It’s often used in culinary dishes (it’s popular in pesto and soup) and like it’s domestic counterpart, it’s got mild healing properties. 3- Most importantly; it’s not my place. I don’t own the land, work on the estate or tend the gardens. I’m not familiar with or connected to the spirits of that particular place. So to rock up and take some would be rude. The spirits know who’s there the grab the fruit, and who’s there to tend the soil. We all have a cauldron.. It's what goes into it that matters 🤣 Sometimes I forget those I work with, do not know my kitchen witchery skills.. Everyone has a little Hedgewitch in them, I'm quite sure. The topic of magic can be an intimidating and scary concept to some. However, hedgewitchery is no different from the person putting cinnamon into a recipe.. they may do it for taste or to invoke those old-fashioned christmassy "feels" commonly attributed to cinnamon 🤔 but they may not know the wonderful healing properties of this bark, its heavy with antioxidants, anti inflammatory, improves heart health and the list goes on.. The same can be said for the use of Lavenders to aid sleep and the calming effect of essential oils. The mind is our most powerful thing, and if one person believes in my kind of magic and they feel better for it, that can only be a good thing. Herbal Magic 🌿 There is so much that I love about working with plants and a lot of it I would consider magical! So much of this herbal magic is intertwined with science and details of plants and creation. This is perhaps not what one would immediately think of when they hear the word magic. How do you define magic? What are some things that you consider magical? For me... mixing plants or ingredients together is so magical. The colours, the textures, the evolution! 😍 Creating something from simple ingredients, with simple methods, and watching it become something new. For example, in this set of photos, we start with Spruce tip infused apple cider vinegar (ACV). Which on its own has already transformed in several ways... The apples that were fermented with water and sugar to create the vinegar, then infused with the Spruce tips, which completely changes the colour and flavour of the ACV! Then you see the infused ACV layered on top of raw honey. Completely separate, despite being in the same vessel. Once mixed together, they become one emulsified liquid, which again is a completely different colour and flavour! 🥰 I get so much joy from these simple things. I also get a lot of joy from Spruce Tip Oxymel... which is what the final product created here is called. It is a delicious, nutritious, and medicinal creation. Magic!!! You can get Spruce Tip Oxymel from me in my etsy shop or locally. It is a fantastic source of Vitamin C, it makes a lovely addition to sparking water, mocktails, or cocktails, and it can even help soothe your sore throat. Borage is probably one of those plants that’s overlooked by many. Banishing and protection spell for a dear friend. I used Rosemary, Rue, Thyme, Lavender, Rowan Berries, Juniper Berries and a pinch of salt. I wanted to burn Patchouli, but I didn’t have any; so burning Sandalwood. The entity I am trying to protect my friend from feels pest/bug/mosquito like in essence, so using herbs that would have been used to keep bugs away. Feeling very drawn to Lavender at the moment. I want to hang bunches of it all around the house. I grew loads of it last summer, but that was for the bees. Apart from Lavender’s relaxing and sleep inducing properties, it can also be used to ward against harmful spirits, and for purification. I always throw it into my protection rituals alongside rosemary, and I make lavender and rosemary saining bundles. ˚✧₊⁎ A backyard bounty ˚✧₊⁎ ˚✧₊⁎ Last night my magickal friend @plant_portals gave us a tour by flashlight of my backyard to point out the nourishing and helpful plants already thriving there 🌿 I’m going to work with the purple dead nettles, cleavers and violets in a spring oxymel potion for our home apothecary and while gathering up these new friends and getting to know them, I was inspired to reserve a portion of our yard for them to continue to prosper. 💗 ˚✧₊⁎ These native plants are abundant in vitamins, fortify against various afflictions, and nurture our immune systems. You never know what kind of magic you’ll find right behind your house. We love #herbracks. We have them not only in our #farmkitchen, but also bigger ones hanging upside down inside our animal coops and pens. The chickens and turkeys have tons of fun while trying to peck at them, and it has the bonus of making everything smell fantastic. Ground Elder. We were digging tons of this stuff out of my sister’s vegetable garden last week. Ground Elder has a long history of medicinal use and was cultivated as a food crop and medicinal herb in the Middle Ages (the leaves are edible). The plant was used mainly as a food that could counteract gout, one of the effects of the rich foods eaten by monks, bishops at the time (hence its other name “Bishop’s weed). The plant is little used in modern herbalism. All parts of the plant are antirheumatic, diuretic, sedative and vulnerary. An infusion is used in the treatment of rheumatism, arthritis and disorders of the bladder and intestines. Externally, it is used as a poultice on burns, stings, wounds, painful joints etc. The plant is harvested when it is in flower in late spring to mid-summer and can be used fresh or be dried for later use. A homeopathic remedy is made from the flowering plant.
