Wild Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) Wild fennel is one of the most abundant wild foods. It is a master of adaptability, growing happily on disturbed land and along roadsides. Wild fennel is an upright , branching perennial with greyish-green stems bearing dark green leaves with thread-like lobes. Small mustard yellow flowers appear in summer, followed by small egg-shaped seedpods. Fennel is an incredibly aromatic and flavoursome herb with an aniseed flavour and aroma. Wild fennel is native to the Mediterranean, where it’s known as finocchio selvatico (Italian) and shoumar / shomar (Arabic). Wild fennel is the same plant as garden fennel however it does not form fat bulbs at its base. All parts of wild fennel are edible, from the base to the seeds. Its leaves are best eaten when very young and make a lovely addition to salads, as a garnish or with fish. The aromatic seeds are used in flavouring for cakes, bread, and stuffing mixes. Fennel has a long history of medicinal use. It is commonly used as a calming tea for digestive complaints. While the entire plant can be used in various remedies, it is the seeds that are most active medicinally. Its aromatic and warming qualities reduce cramping and bloating and dispel wind in the gut. Lightly crush the seeds in a mortar to crack the casing, and then add a teaspoon of the crushed seeds to a teapot of boiling water. Let the tea rest for five minutes and serve tepid. Fennel is a useful companion plant for attracting bees, hoverflies, and ladybirds to the garden. Laura & Adrian from Alicante had their intimate wedding at @forbesofkingennie on Sunday. A lovely morning was spent with Laura and her family setting up the decor, all the whilst wishing my Spanish was as good as their English. A highlight was listening to the rehearsal of the Spanish songs to be performed later in the day, so powerful it stopped you in your tracks. The banquet tables had an autumnal appeal with fabric drapes, bright colured candles, and staged settings incorporating potted herbs, which were ever so fragrant. Like the bridal bouquet, the ceremony decor had a softer autumnal appeal with the most gorgeous Westminster Abbey Roses featuring throughout.

Some of my scented pelargonium have enjoyed the lovely warm weather and is bursting with flowers. These are oak leaf (cedar scented), Sweet Mimosa, Orange Fizz, Nutmeg, and Clorinda (smells like freshly ground black pepper to me) Only a very few plants left from last season in the nursery - mostly Nutty/Shottesham Pet, Attar of Roses, and Oak leaf. Currently sold out of Ginger/Torento, Peppermint, Sweet Mimosa, Lady Plymouth (rose-mint), chocolate, lemon, and citronella. I'm making new cuttings this week so should have more available in the nursery mid summer. Flowers all edible and leaves can be used in tea, to flavourful baking, infuse into jams, jellies, creams and cakes. Do you have a scented pelargonium I've not mentioned? My ever-expanding patio herb garden is always delivering new kitchen opportunities, starting with a refreshing hot herb tea made from freshly-picked Lemon Verbena, Lemon Balm and Lavender (pics 1,2). I have several plants around the property and this one is in a place that doesn't get quite as much sunshine and possibly in a slightly damper place. Help solve this garden mystery! 🕵️♀️🔍 Following my post about my lemongrass harvest, a few people have said that their lemongrass aren’t behaving the same way. I did some research and there’s a Stuff article from a few years ago that says that some nurseries had grown citronella grass from seeds they thought were lemongrass seeds and sold them as lemongrass. The lemongrass I harvested were grown from stalks given to me by a friend. However, I did also buy and sow lemongrass seeds from Kings (NZ). They are a similar age but the plants I grew from seeds have never produced plump stalks. They also dry up in winter and have different coloured stalks. Photo 1 and 2 are of my lemongrass which I harvested from. Photo 3 and 4 are of the plants I grew from seeds. What do you think? The ever-expanding herb section of my patio container garden (pic 1) is doing really well. This year I’ve added some newcomers including Moroccan mint (makes delicious tea), red-veined sorrel for salad leaves and medicinal lemon balm. I’ve also got six more basils, chervil (bit like parsley) plus Mexican tarragon (aka sweet mace) and anise hyssop (which makes a delicious liquorice-aniseed mint tea) starting to pop up in the propagation nursery at the far end of the garden (pic 2) next to the tomatoes and chillies (pic 3). Two new plant babies! I bought this small orange primula from the nursery today, just because it smells sooooo good, and a Moroccan mint for the same reason.
