We came across swathes of wild garlic on our walk to Haddo House yesterday. Wild garlic is a popular plant to forage, and as a folk witch, I love me a good forage. But I decided not to take any for several reasons.
1- its on a popular walk for people and dogs, it’s probably covered in dog piss.
2- I don’t need any. It’s often used in culinary dishes (it’s popular in pesto and soup) and like it’s domestic counterpart, it’s got mild healing properties.
3- Most importantly; it’s not my place. I don’t own the land, work on the estate or tend the gardens. I’m not familiar with or connected to the spirits of that particular place. So to rock up and take some would be rude. The spirits know who’s there the grab the fruit, and who’s there to tend the soil.
Also; if you are going to forage, please do so safely and sustainably.
