We came across swathes of wild garlic on our walk to Haddo House yesterday. Wild garlic is a popular plant to forage, and as a folk witch, I love me a good forage. But I decided not to take any for several reasons. 1- its on a popular walk for people and dogs, it’s probably covered in dog piss. 2- I don’t need any. It’s often used in culinary dishes (it’s popular in pesto and soup) and like it’s domestic counterpart, it’s got mild healing properties. 3- Most importantly; it’s not my place. I don’t own the land, work on the estate or tend the gardens. I’m not familiar with or connected to the spirits of that particular place. So to rock up and take some would be rude. The spirits know who’s there the grab the fruit, and who’s there to tend the soil. Overwhelming… That’s a word that many feel the weight of, especially around this time of year with all the good things-the getting together, the celebrations, the planning, the preparing, the purchasing of the perfect gifts. The phrase that keeps coming to my mind is to “prepare Him room.” Ultimately, Jesus is what this season is all about. Really, His purposes for our lives here on Earth are what our whole existence is all about. Every day it’s important to realize and readjust where our focus is, what is pouring out of us, and Who (not what) is filling the reservoir of our souls. It’s easy to lose sight of in our excitement and even our overwhelm. Today, I pray we take time to pause. To prepare Him room. To praise Him for what He has already done, to adore Who He is, and to make room for what He wants to continue doing in and through us. Take time to clear the clutter and to worship the Creator. When I see this photo, I’m taken back to the joy it was to walk free, find new sights to see, and take in the value of beautifully curated gardens, statues, monuments and castles. Looking back, it’s clear that all of these creations of art take tending to. To preserve, to restore and to protect the inherent beauty they carry (as they were intentionally planned to withhold and behold by their creators). I think the same for us, too. Our creator designed each of us with intention, with masterful skill and intricate craft. He knows the innermost parts of us, since before we were born, for He is the One who knitted us together in our mothers’ wombs. He knows when we need to be restored, fixed up and tended to, too. Therefore, allow Him to tend the soil in this season. Allow the fine work to be done within in, for the purpose is much larger than for the sake of ourselves. Art is never for the sake of existing and being hidden away. It’s designed to be seen, to be noticed. What’s created is simply pointing to the work of its creator. So then, let it be that the beauty of our maker’s image reflects off of us and the unique, holy, set-apartedness of us as His image bearers gains the sight of many. Not to be glorified unto us - rather, let all we exemplify by being who we were created to be in Christ bring fame, glory, attention and award to the Most High King, the wondrous architect, designer and planner who we call our God. He is the potter, we are His clay. He is the creator, we are His creation. He is the Father, we are His sons and daughters. He set us apart with intention in mind. His purposes are good. Receive the tending hand of the One who molds and shapes you into something beautiful - You Are His. Do you start with believing God is going to do something then it seems to take too long then you start making choices that you think could move you in the direction of the outcome you want? But do you find yourself so busy doing for others or trying to make things happen for yourself that you’ve lost focus and your relationship with Christ suffers? Perhaps we needn’t scramble to do it all and get bogged down by everything coming at us. Maybe it’s time to examine the soil and connect with the Master Gardener. Spend time soaking in His presence. Coming out of yet another initiation. The ones imbedded with symptoms connected to the physical body always feel the most intense for me. There are layers of the psyche and emotional body which have enough stillness to come to the forefront when the mind and the physical body aren't taking precedence in action and doing. When you have to sit still in one place and the majority of your energy is spent on recovery - you must sit with all else that is present as well. Third times a charm it seems. 🙏🏽 First when Rhea (my kitten) passed away. 🙏🏽 Last month when that flu-upgrade came passing by. 🙏🏽 And now, with the hives. Which consists of 3 days and 3 nights of deep surrender to the natural detoxification process and intelligence of the physical body. Although, It feels rather Jesus-esque. Akin to the resurrection - there seems to be an equal if not greater expansion which follows after the process has reached its completion. It is an upgrade of sorts due to a recalibration once a certain level of density has been purged from the body. Perhaps it is also the contrast of gratitude after experiencing any kind of turmoil. A deeper appreciation of vitalized energy and optimum physical health. And after each contraction has come a greater expansion - being met with more clients, more opportunities to do what feels naturally fulfilling, and more flow and connection. 🌱 Yet I am learning that regardless of the fruits of the labor - it all starts with the seeds that you plant. 🌱 How you lovingly you nourish your garden in the midst of the seeming drought. 🌱 And how gentle, patient, and conscious you are in tending the soil - when all the shit seems to be hitting the fan instead of the fertilizer. Kids know how. They do it without any push from us adults. Kids have a way of caring for even the small little bugs and critters and flowers that they come across. How do they know to do that? There are certain human traits that can certainly be fostered and reinforced. However, we come with them from Day 1. So here’s my question: What defines the words education and learning? Is it all coming from the outside world, or can learning happen from within? Do we come into the world with an inner compass that can guide us well throughout our life? Who your child becomes and how much they are prepared for the world of tomorrow could depend on how strong the connection with that inner compass is. This fast-pace world needs the children of today to be well guided from within and care a whole lot about making a difference. And to do it in a manner that shows their code of honor. Have you ever heard the term "eat seasonally?" It means that we choose our meals based on what crops are growing during that particular time of the year. It's not used as often these days as it once was, and this is due mainly to how the food industry produces and imports produce now. In years past, imported food was rare and quite expensive. This meant that many had to eat what was available at a reasonable price. And for some, it meant they were limited to what they had grown or stored. You begin to see new potatoes and asparagus as spring rolls around. In the summer months, berries are abundant. We find many utilize things like garlic, leeks, and peas with winter. So while we have access to many types of produce via importing, it can be fun to switch things up by choosing produce in season. “For where there is deep grief, there is great love.” I’m no stranger to grief. None of us are, in some capacity. Sometimes it feels more bearable, and other times it takes my breath away. I was talking/crying to Corbin last night just about how much my heart aches over those I’ve lost. My heart aches for those I know who have lost loved ones. I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that God is good & I bow to His will, but that doesn’t mean there is a void of pain. (And please, let people grieve. It’s necessary & healthy & biblical to lament. Please stop giving cliché, unhelpful phrases like “Well God needed them more than you.” No, He didn’t. God is God, He is sovereign & He doesn’t need a thing). Corbin has been reading a book called “The Backyard Lumberjack.” As I was pouring my heart out last night, he shared a passage he was reading that was explaining that you need to be careful how aggressively you’re clearing a canopy of trees. “Anywhere a large tree goes down, the trees around it will suffer incidental damage from increased exposure. Trees both compete with and rely on one another. Each has to make sacrifices in stability and branch distribution in order to keep reaching and expanding for light. When a tree loses a neighbor, it is immediately unbalanced and over-extended on that particular side, and it will frequently suffer somewhat for this imbalance before it can begin to reap the benefits of the new real estate.” If that isn’t a picture of grief. 😭 One of my favorite song says: “Come tend the soil Come tend the soil of my soul And like a garden And like a garden I will grow I will grow.” I’m so grateful for a Lord who is always tending the soil of my soul. Even when I feel unbalanced, He is steadfast & unshakable. When I feel over-extended, He is strong & full of compassion. In this new real estate, He is making a way. He is the Perfect Way. 🤍
Have we really forgotten to tend our soil? Urbanisation has led to loss of real soil and its inhabitants, mainly trees and green plantations. We all in our daily conversations talk about living in a concrete jungle, but that could be most of the time beyond ones choice and the concrete enroachments are beyond control. And we all know this is a major factor leading to pollution making earth dilute. Trees, we all are aware, naturally consume carbon dioxide releasing breathable oxygen. While we may not be able to walk around planting trees everywhere, we can surely plant a sapling - at home or in our localities! I want to be with people who submerge in the task, who go into the fields to harvest and work in a row and pass the bags along, who are not parlor generals and field deserters but move in a common rhythm when the food must come in or the fire be put out. The work of the world is common as mud. Botched, it smears the hands, crumbles to dust. But the thing worth doing well done has a shape that satisfies, clean and evident.
