May 17 was #EndangeredSpeciesDay, and we want to highlight the rusty patched bumble bee 🐝, a species that has declined an estimated 87% from its historic range. The rusty patched bumble bee was listed at federally endangered in 2017 after this species suffered a steep and widespread decline throughout the eastern US. The cause of its decline is likely due to habitat loss and degradation, use of pesticides and fungicides, invasive species, introduction of pests and pathogens by commercial bee industries and climate change. Bumble bees are great pollinators because they “buzz pollinate.” Their vibrations loosen hard-to-get pollen, resulting in an explosion of pollen that provides food for the bee but also boosts pollination. How can you help? 🌼 Create bumble bee friendly habitat by planting native species and not using chemicals in your yard. 🍁In fall, leave some areas of your yard unraked or pile leaves and branches at the edge of your yard or garden beds. Most people don’t realize that there were no honey bees in America until the White colonists brought hives from Europe. Native pollinators, in particular bees, had been doing all the pollination on this continent before the arrival of honey bees. Our native bees continue to do a great deal of pollination, especially when it comes to native plants. The honey bee doesn’t know how to pollinate a tomato or an eggplant flower, while some native bees are masters at this. The same thing happens with a number of native plants, such as pumpkins and squash, blueberries and cranberries, which are more efficiently pollinated by native bees than by honey bees. Found a tiny bumblebee I that was cought in a room and I thought it was dead. Luckily it was still alive. Weak, but alive. Put it on a plate and gave it water and a bit of honey (I have now learned that you should NOT give honey) . While it was drinking I carried it outside and picked some flowers for it. After some rest it started to drink nectar from the flower and tested it wings. After a test fly around my head it went back to the flower one last time before it flew away. Dandelions are incredibly important to many species of early bumblebees, as well as for a host of other insects, not forgetting our own honey bees. We should all be moving away from cutting/grubbing/spraying these wild spring flowers - if we are truly wanting to “save the bees”. 🐝Seit der letzten Wochen habe ich so viel Wissenswertes über Hummeln gelernt. Leider nicht nur Schönes, sondern vor allem Dinge die mich sehr schockiert und betroffen gemacht haben! 😰 🐝Sie gehört nicht nur zu unseren Wildbienen, sondern ist zugleich auch mit am stärksten bedroht. So robust und anpassungsfähig unsere Hummel auch ist, Krankheiten wie das Flügeldeformationsvirus, Agrargifte und vor allem der Verlust von Lebensräumen ziehen die Schlinge immer enger. Durch Monokulturen und das Verschwinden von Blütenwiesen gehen auch die Nahrungsquellen verloren. Vor 15 Jahren flogen noch 12 Arten durch unsere Gärten, heute sind es lediglich 7 heimische Arten. In der Summe ist etwa ein Drittel aller europäischen Hummelarten vom Aussterben bedroht. Das ist so traurig 😢 🐝 Ich las das und dachte mir, man muss doch irgendwas tun können. Auch hier werde ich nun alles versuchen ein bisschen an die Natur und ihre Tierwelt zurückzugeben. Gut ist, dass wir seit Jahren einen Totholzhaufen haben, der bietet Nistmöglichkeit Nr.1. Ein kleines Hummelhotel für kleinere Arten haben wir nun auch. Saved this little guy from heat and from getting stepped on. His back legs were dragging, and he looked injured. He tried to fly but fell.
