There are two more weeks to take part in the Community-Centric Fundraising National Survey! You are invited to participate in a research study on the use of Community-Centric Fundraising practices to understand how organizations are carrying out fundraising activities today and what changes they have made in their fundraising programs in response to calls for diversity, equity, and inclusion. The survey should take about 20 to 25 minutes and should be completed by your organization’s lead fundraiser or the fundraising team together. The researchers will also interview a small number of fundraisers to better understand challenges and successes. The research is being conducted by Elizabeth Dale, PhD, of Seattle University and Maya Hemachandra, CFRE, and is being supported by the CCF Global Council as well as a grant from the AFP Foundations for Philanthropy. My good friend Meena Das of @namastedata, recently authored an essay, “A Call for the Responsible Use of AI that Leads with Care and Imagination,” that is a must-read for anyone concerned with AI ethics and equity. Go read it now on @communitycentricfundraising's content hub. ⠀ Spoiler alert: Meena is also a guest on an upcoming season 5 episode of The Ethical Rainmaker in which we talk all about the ethics and responsible use of AI in our sector. Meena is incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about data and AI equity, and she’s great at presenting that knowledge in a fun and accessible way. I know you all are going to love this episode (and Meena) just as much as I do! ⠀ Sign up for The Ethical Rainmaker mailing list (Link in bio) to be the first to know when new episodes drop. ⠀ #dataequity #aiequity #aiethics #ethicalfundraising #theethicalrainmaker #podcast #communitycentricfundraising

This weekend I’m headed to Vancouver to be a panel moderator for the final stop on @thecirclecanada’s Book Tour for Bina M. Patel’s “Say the Quiet Part Out Loud.” ⠀ The Circle is an Indigenous-led organization that works alongside Indigenous organizations and Canada’s philanthropic sector to amplify Indigenous wisdom, vision, and solutions, while working to move the philanthropic sector more into alignment with Indigenous ways of knowing, being, and stewarding resources. (Psst … the upcoming season of The Ethical Rainmaker podcast features an episode with The Cirlce’s CEO, Kris Archie!) ⠀ The Circle is currently on tour with Bina Patel to share her wisdom and book, “Say the Quiet Part Out Loud,” and anyone aiming to be a change-maker won’t want to miss the important conversations being had on this tour. ⠀ If you’re near the Vancouver area, check out the link in my bio to register for this May 3rd event. . . . @theethicalrainmaker is a podcast that is fed up with the inequity in the world of nonprofits and philanthropy. One aspect of Community-Centric Fundraising that people often tell us they struggle with is navigating difficult conversations. When we think about how white supremacy culture conditions us to believe that our relationships, and our status as members of a community, are sustained by our ability to avoid conflict and mistakes while maintaining an unwavering “niceness”, it makes sense why people, especially white people, find challenging conversations to be so daunting. But here’s the good news, you can do hard things, and Fleur Larsen and Michelle Muri are launching a two-part series on difficult conversations to help white folks in the nonprofit sector do the hard but necessary emotional labor of becoming more reliable allies in service to justice and equity. This workshop is centered around principle #6 of the Community Centric Fundraising principles: “We treat donors as partners, and this means that we are transparent, and occasionally have difficult conversations,” and will be a safe space to practice these hard conversations. Workshop details: Navigating Conversations on Racial Justice with Your Funders, Community Members and Colleagues for White Allies in the Nonprofit Sector: A 2-Part Workshop on Community Centric Fundraising Principle #6 When: May 23rd and June 6th, from 10-12pm PST. Register via the link in our bios. Note: This workshop is open to all nonprofit staff, not just those directly in fundraising. This workshop isn’t an intro to CCF, but we welcome white folks who are on a journey around anti-racism work. #ccf #communitycentricfundraising #ethicalrainmaker #nonprofit #fundraising #workshop

In community-centric and ethical fundraising spaces we often talk about how the majority of wealth has been (and continues to be) made through extractive practices, but I’ve learned through traveling and speaking outside of the U.S. that this terminology doesn’t always translate well. ⠀ So when the term “extractive practices” doesn’t communicate what we really mean, here’s another way of putting it: ⠀ The majority of wealth has been made through pain, suffering, and taking without ever giving in return. ⠀ For example, in the U.S. the construction of railroads not only enabled the accumulation of wealth for those who were suddenly able to transport goods more quickly and cheaply, but also made railroad companies some of the biggest and richest companies in the world. ⠀ Building these railroads that created so much wealth involved: ⠀ - The displacement and genocide of the Indigenous peoples - The theft and deforestation of land - The exploitation and endangerment (including maiming and death) of immigrant and enslaved laborers. ⠀ "Extractive practices" may be accurate terminology, but it conveys none of the human suffering or ecological devastation involved if someone doesn't already have the base knowledge of how our railroads were built. ⠀ So when we talk about “extractive practices,” we need to ensure that: ⠀ 1. There is a base understanding of what these practices actually look like, so we're not sanitizing or obscuring their brutality and lasting impacts. 2. We’re not just talking about “extractive practices” in the past tense, because these practices persist today. 3. We’re also talking (as a sector) about how the harm done by these practices requires reparations. ⠀ ⠀ #theethicalrainmaker #communitycentricfundraising #philanthropy

Just because traditional fundraising practices have been effective at raising money doesn’t mean that these practices are right or ethical. ⠀ It is true that changing the way we do things takes time and effort, and that can feel daunting when we so often operate from a place of urgency and scarcity, but fear is a bad reason to uphold a harmful status quo. ⠀ Shifting towards doing things in a more community centric way will be an ongoing and iterative process, so instead of asking how long it will take, it’ll be more useful to figure out where you can start. . . . @theethicalrainmaker is a podcast that is fed up with the inequity in the world of nonprofits and philanthropy. We hopefully all know that charity is NOT actually the answer to systemic issues, but the idea that it is has been embedded into dominant thinking by the defunding of government social support programs and the transfer of those responsibilities to NPOs. ⠀ NPOs needed funding to fulfill these responsibilities, so nonprofit fundraising “best practices” emerged to secure that funding. Unfortunately, these practices were (and are) heavily influenced by "saviorism," which positioned funders as the problem solvers and has entrenched donor control. These practices are known as Donor Centrism. ⠀ But we don’t have to keep operating this way! Ditching donor centrism doesn’t mean ditching our donors. Shifting towards a community-centric practice means examining these power dynamics, having hard but vital conversations, and inviting donors to take more appropriate roles. . . . @theethicalrainmaker is a podcast that looks at inequity in the world of nonprofits and philanthropy. Community-Centric Fundraising (CCF) is a growing movement that emphasizes collaboration, equity, and building strong relationships with the communities nonprofits serve. While some established organizations might hesitate due to fear of change, resource limitations, or historical context, CCF offers significant benefits like deeper connections, increased accountability, and the BOLD GOAL... a more just philanthropic system. I was back in California last week. It was a FULL trip, so here’s Part 1 of the photo dump/recap: My first stop on this trip was Sacramento to FINALLY meet Marisa DeSalles (@kidscatzntech). Marisa’s spoken word piece 12 Years a Fly in the Milk was the very first piece of content featured on CCF’s content hub in July of 2020. We’ve been long-distance friends ever since, and it was such a joy to meet her in person after years of phone calls and mutual support. Also pictured is Marisa’s son Brandon (@Brandobrandeezy), budding photographer! Marisa invited me to speak with her Catalyst Cohort for BIPOC nonprofit leaders at an event hosted by @sierrahealthwellnesscenters. There, I got a chance to enjoy Betsaida LeBron (@playfullleader), a teambuilding comedian who did brilliant and creative facilitation around imposter syndrome. Stay tuned for an upcoming IG Live with Betsaida! I also happened to meet Kazhun Jiles (@1kazhun) who’s a trucker, world traveler, polyglot, and content creator. Kazhun is learning as many languages as she can to connect with people across the globe - we agree we are fam! And that was all just in Sacramento! Stay tuned for Part 2 of this CA trip recap and photo dump. #theethicalrainmaker #california #communitycentricfundraising #nonprofits #photodump #travel

Nonprofits need to reimagine our role as practicing solidarity, not charity. ⠀ Here are a few ways that nonprofits can shift from practicing charity to practicing solidarity to build power and foster collective liberation: 💕 Center the Community: Prioritize the leadership and agency of our communities. Instead of imposing solutions from the outside, listen to, amplify the voices of, and follow the leadership of those with the most lived experience and intimate knowledge of the issues at hand. 💕 Don’t just treat the symptoms, change the systems: Move beyond addressing the symptoms of social problems and work towards addressing their root causes. Collaborate with community members to identify the systemic issues at play and advocate for structural change that addresses the root causes of injustice. 💕 Cultivate strong relationships: We have to foster relationships based on mutual respect, reciprocity, and trust with the communities we serve. 💕 Support Grassroots Organizing: Invest in grassroots organizing efforts that prioritize community empowerment, collective action, and self-determination. Provide resources, training, and capacity-building support to help communities build power from within. 💕 Promote solidarity across movements and organizations: Recognize the interconnectedness of all of our struggles and actively work to support other movements and organizations. Collaborate to build coalitions and identify and work towards shared goals. ⠀ By adopting a solidarity mindset, nonprofits can move away from charity-driven approaches that maintain power imbalances, towards collaborative, community-centered approaches that prioritize collective liberation and real systemic change. ⠀ #theethicalrainmaker #ethicalfundraising #communitycentricfundraising #solidarity #nonprofit #fundraisers #nonprofitindustrialcomplex #systemschange

In the past few years, we’ve talked a lot about Community-Centric Fundraising, a fundraising model that is grounded in equity and social justice and working to create a less harmful approach to development. The CCF website (communitycentricfundraising.org) is a great place to learn more about the model's grounding principles, principles that we've been trying to weave into our development work (and acknowledge we still have along ways to go!). We were really excited to see this recent article in their resource hub highlighting 7 ways you can get started integrating CCF principles into your fundraising practice. Some super tangible and actionable tips here (and a great read to share with your boards too). Check it out (link in bio up top there ⬆️). #CommunityCentricFundraising #EquitableFundraising #nonprofits #NonprofitCulture #BrightspotConsultants #FundraisingConsulting #WomenInBusiness #WomenOwned #NonprofitLeadership #fundraising #philanthropy

Repost from @communitycentricfundraising • When white people go into the nonprofit industrial complex with the intent to “change the sector from within,” a vast majority of those that move up into leadership positions become a part of the system that they intended to transform. Read Rebekah Giacomantonio’s essay, “Gretchen, stop trying to make ‘change the system from within’ happen. It’s not going to happen,” (link in bio) to see what white allies need to keep in mind in order to navigate the sector with their values intact. CCF is a movement that fundamentally reimagines fundraising so that practices are grounded in racial and economic justice — and centered around communities of color.⠀⠀ #systemicchange #antiracismpractices #nonprofitindustrialcomplex #nonprofitorganizations #communitycentricfundraising #dothework #bethechange [Slide content in the comments]

I kicked off 2024 with a trip to CA earlier this month, where I ran 2 retreats and gave a 2-hour talk all in the span of one week! I’m so excited that 4 years after the launch of Community-Centric Fundraising, organizations large and small continue to be dedicated to learning more about and adopting more community-centered ways of doing things. ⠀ Here’s some quick highlights from the Santa Rosa portion of my recent trip, where I had the pleasure of running a retreat for Santa Rosa Junior College Foundation. ⠀ Photo 1: Me with Santa Rosa Junior College Foundations Executive Director J Mullineaux and Constituent Relations Coordinator Katie Greenwald. I truly appreciate J’s vision and dedication to meeting the ever changing needs of both current and potential students. ⠀ Photo 2: A presentation during the retreat by the deeply equity and justice minded new Superintendent/President of Santa Rosa Junior College, Dr. Angélica Garcia. ⠀ Photo 3: Me and Lisa Carreno, the CEO of United Way of Wine Country (where I also gave a talk on this trip). I’m lucky that Lisa often hosts me when I’m in the area. Her home is cute and cozy, she cooks the most incredible meals, and is a joy to spend time with. ⠀ Photo 4: I finally got to meet Karin Demarest (@karindemarest) in-person for the first time, after having first gotten to know her in one of @fleurlarsen and my White Women in Nonprofits Cohorts. ⠀ More highlights from this trip, including the retreat I ran for ACLU of Northern California and the talk I gave for United Way of Wine Country, as well as some exciting announcements coming very soon. . . @theethicalrainmaker is a podcast that is fed up with the inequity in the world of nonprofits and philanthropy. In the nonprofit sector, we must remind ourselves that capitalism and white supremacy culture will steer the focus from social impact to generating revenue, warping nonprofits into something more akin to corporations. ⠀ And since so much of our focus is on funding, we’re constantly afraid of rocking the boat and upsetting donors. This means we avoid having discussions about, and challenging the current power structures and systems in place, that continue to cause harm. ⠀ This sector SHOULD be committed to challenging harmful systems, but it gets complicated when we’re then funded by folks with a vested interest in maintaining those very systems. ⠀ Funding is vital to our missions, but there is so much more to fundraising than just keeping donors happy. The thought of losing money is scary, but the thought that some donors will only be in our community if we center their comfort and wishes (even at the expense of our communities’ best interest) is even worse. ⠀ So many of our existing donors are ready to learn and have hard conversations, and so many values-aligned donors that we haven't even met yet are out there just waiting to be a part of our communities. Don't let fear keep you from imagining the possibilities! ⠀ Are you interested in learning about how to turn idealistic CCF principles into action in 2024? Investing in myself in 2024 means planting myself in new gardens.🪴🌿🪻 . Yesterday I bid a fond farewell to Seattle Rep. I built such a home there coming out of the worst of the pandemic. I grew immensely:  taking on new projects, expanding my skills, and making incredible friends (and art!) with amazing humans. I'm the luckiest girl in Seattle (swipe for some memories). I'll be back for shows and volunteering and more...🎭🏜💸 . But now it's time for something new! On the last day of school before winter break, I got the opportunity to visit the newly remodeled Northwest School for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Children (@nwsdhh), thanks to my neighbor, Noelle, who works there. ⠀ This is a truly community-centered space! Accommodations to enhance learning are par for the course here, for both students and teachers. Signing and speaking are used concurrently to give everyone access (even for eavesdropping purposes 😉). ⠀ I love the values espoused in this mural. The hands in the mural are signing the word “be,” so that the mural reads: “be curious, be helpful, be kind, be safe, and be yourself,” and the kids see themselves represented in this mural by figures (including a cute cartoon dolphin!) with colorful cochlear implants and hearing aids. ⠀ I also loved the little reminders and affirmations hung right at the kids’ eye level, like this sign that reads, “My challenges help me grow” — a sentiment we could all use a reminder of as we head into a new year! . . . @theethicalrainmaker is a podcast that is fed up with the inequity in the world of nonprofits and philanthropy. Nonprofits generally raise anywhere from 17–22% of their annual revenue in the month of December alone, so year-end giving campaigns really can make or break an organization’s budget. It makes sense that we’re all pushing so hard this time of year. (And I see and appreciate how hard you’re working right now! I hope the new year brings with it some space for you to relax, reflect, and reset.) ⠀ Let’s talk about the way we’re framing year-end giving though, because how we frame the benefits of giving matters. When our year-end giving campaigns incentivize giving with the promise of tax deductions, what are we communicating to donors about our values? ⠀ The reality in the U.S. is that philanthropy and the tax system work together in a way that deprives the public sector to maintain the decision-making and social power of the wealthy. When our communications with donors explicitly tout tax-deductibility as a benefit of giving, are we telling donors that it’s good to pay fewer taxes? That it’s better to support the third sector than to support the public sector? That they SHOULD have the power to choose who is and isn’t worthy of support? ⠀ Criticism of how our tax dollars are spent is totally valid and necessary, especially when the U.S. does things like actively funding genocide, but is ENCOURAGING wealthy folks to pay EVEN LESS of their fair share of taxes really in alignment with our values and goals? ⠀ We as fundraisers need to be aware of these dynamics, and keep our values and community at the center of our fundraising efforts and communications year round. . . . @theethicalrainmaker is a podcast that is fed up with the inequity in the world of nonprofits and philanthropy. Andrea Arenas (Andrea is going to be joining me for a minisode early next year!) and I recently went to meet Tim Schwab and listen to him talk about his book, The Bill Gates Problem, Reckoning with the Myth of the Good Billionaire. I was impressed by the thoroughness of Tim’s research, and how bold it was for him to bring this talk to Gates’ own hometown! ⠀ I learned a lot from Tim’s talk, and am still working my way through his book, but I can say that if you’re interested in learning more about how the ultra wealthy engage with philanthropy to amass power and avoid accountability – and the dangers that come along with that – this is a fascinating case study. . . . @theethicalrainmaker is a podcast that is fed up with the inequity in the world of nonprofits and philanthropy. Our sector cannot improve if we don’t reflect on harm caused by our practices. Traditional approaches to fundraising often uphold the very injustices we’re trying to correct. ⠀ It is true that not every donor is ready for hard conversations, especially conversations about their role in oppressive systems. ⠀ But, we’re letting down many of our donors by underestimating their ability and desire to engage in these conversations. Everyone (including donors) can benefit from a deeper and more holistic understanding of their own role in fighting for equity and justice. ⠀ We, as fundraisers, need to move away from the traditional approach of catering to donors' comfort and assuming their fragility. Fundraising is relationship based, and relationships that tiptoe around the truth are NOT healthy or sustainable relationships. ⠀ We can build stronger donor relationships, and communities overall, when we start from a place of trust and respect for everyone involved. . . . @theethicalrainmaker is a podcast that is fed up with the inequity in the world of nonprofits and philanthropy. I’ve officially given my final talk of 2023! ⠀ Big thanks to @fundraisingeverywhere for hosting me at their Trust and Major Donors Conference earlier today. ⠀ I spoke about Community-Centeric Fundraising principles and how we turn these idealistic principles into action, and I was excited to have the chance to introduce one of the go-to tools I use with all of my clients, Community Mapping. ⠀ Community mapping is an exercise that I typically do with clients early on in the process, to help both expand thinking about who the community that we’re centering is, and to really solidify what community is to them. ⠀ At the heart of this exercise are 4 seemingly simple questions: ⠀ ❓Who is at the center of our work? ❓Who is connected to the folks at the center of our work? ❓Who might be values aligned with us, and who wants us to succeed? ❓Who’s is missing? ⠀ Exploring the answers to these questions, and the other questions that arise through the process of this exercise, provides so much clarity about what “community” truly means, and starts to lay the foundation for building a community-centric practice. ⠀ And because our communities aren’t static, Community Mapping can and SHOULD be iterative. . . . @theethicalrainmaker is a podcast that is fed up with the inequity in the world of nonprofits and philanthropy. We're about authentic conversations. We're about stepping into our power (and stepping out of the way when needed.) We're also about laughing together. Did you all see the @latimes piece earlier this week on the leaked Amazon documents outlining their 2024 plans for community engagement in Southern California? ⠀ It’s an excellent example of why centering community in our fundraising is so necessary because corporations are more than happy to exchange donations for a boost to their reputation while actively fighting policy that would actually allow our communities to thrive. ⠀ A few key points from the leaked document: ⠀ ⭐ Philanthropy is explicitly transactional for Amazon. They will no longer fund orgs that did not, “result in measurable positive impact to [their] brand and reputation.” ⭐ Speaking of reputation, they highlight the “perceived” harm their warehouse facilities are doing to communities of color, along with labor organizing efforts as a “significant reputational challenge” for Amazon in SoCal. ⭐ “Organizations that position themselves antagonistically towards [Amazon’s] interests” will not be funded by Amazon. This extends to showcasing artwork and artists critical of Amazon, as was the case for @thecheechcenter. ⭐ They plan to use charitable donations to “positively influence policymakers,” while pointing to “labor agitation” as a top policy priority, and highlighting warehouse moratoriums, and environmental legislation as being “detrimental to Amazon’s interests.” ⠀ This document paints an ugly and infuriating picture of how Amazon (and many large corporations) engage with nonprofits, philanthropy, and local politics. As Sheheryar Kaoosji, executive director of the Warehouse Worker Resource Center puts it in the article, “It’s not surprising, but it is a little surprising to see it all written out in one memo” ⠀ You can find the LA Times article (with a link to the leaked document) via the link in my bio. ⠀ #communitycentricfundraising #ethicalfundraising #philanthropy #corporategiving #publicpolicy

Making necessary changes to fundraising practices to center community has benefits that go far beyond the monetary aspects alone. That being said, we’ve seen growing evidence that financial boosts can come with these changes, too! ⠀ ⭐ We’ve seen that being transparent with donors about financial reporting, having deep conversations, and building community is an incredibly effective way of building a robust operation. ⭐We know that developing trusting relationships and having in-depth discussions offers donors a more holistic understanding of what it takes to run effective programs. ⭐ We trust that having a deeper understanding of the complexity of our work builds donors’ sense of belonging in our shared community, and their confidence in their own ability to engage with (including fund) our work. ⠀ Remember: Traditional fundraising practices are rooted in the idea that bringing in as much money as possible is the main goal. Community-centric fundraising principles assert that fundraising must be rooted in bringing about equity and justice. ⠀ If our fundraising practices bring in a lot of money but fail to increase equity and justice in a meaningful and sustainable way, then we are not truly meeting our mission. This approach can actually even harm our fight for equity. ⠀ You can find specific case studies on organizations that are finding success with shifting to community centered ways of being on @communitycentricfundraising’s content hub, as well as on The Ethical Rainmaker podcast, and even more success stories are coming next season! ⠀ #communitycentricfundraising #ethicalfundraising #theEthicalRainmaker #ccfMythBusting #podcast

Former Jamba Juice CEO goes on to say, “We're beyond the point in our history to soften language, to make people comfortable. We actually have to describe things as what they are.” This is true in nonprofit fundraising as well. Today's donors are interested in knowing not only your anti-racist values, but what concrete steps your organization takes to honor those values. Donors are asking explicit questions like: ❓ How representative is your board of the communities you serve? ❓ How representative is your executive leadership team OF the communities you serve? ❓ How have you incorporated the principles of DEI into your strategic plan? ❓ How have you financially invested in the principles of DEI in your organization? These questions are just the tip of the iceberg. We can expect to see more direct and expansive questions like these in the future. Are you and your organization ready to have the hard conversations internally and do what it takes to make meaningful change? #dei #fundraising #communitycentricfundraising #nonprofitlife #nonprofitaf #blackleadersmatter #believeblackwomen

Sometimes, the best relationships are the ones you never expect 🤩 Last year, our staff realized that Goodman needed help storing, organizing and sharing all the piles of digital content from our programs. That’s when we found the team at the @widenenterprises, now a part of Aquia Company. Aquia DAM gifted our behind-the-scenes teams with their comprehensive digital asset management (DAM) system. Covering the onboarding process, connecting us to professionals to answer questions and making it even easier to share the work our programs are doing every day. But they didn’t stop there. This fall, Aquia DAM made a sizeable donation to our Thanksgiving Basket Drive and included Goodman in a large grant to support our elementary after school program. It’s safe to say all of us at Goodman are officially Aquia DAM fans through and through. We’re thrilled to see where this budding community business relationship goes next. #WIDEN #AquiaDAM #DAMsystems #DigitalAssetManagement #CommunityGrant #CommunityDonation #MadisonWI #PhotoSharing #InfoSharing #DigitalSystems #LocalBusinesses #SupportingEachOther #ThisIsMadison #CommunityCentricFundraising #CommunityConnections

As a professional fundraiser by trade, I have a lot of thoughts about #GivingTuesday. ▪️ I often describe it like yelling into a crowd - there is no way to thoughtfully engage your community of support when everyone is vying for your attention. ▪️ That is why I am posting this one day after Giving Tuesday! ▪️ Philanthropy, mutual aid, volunteerism, and advocacy must be year-round behavior to demonstrate authentic allyship. People often get defensive when we start talking about the history of the nonprofit sector and philanthropy, the power imbalances present in these systems, and the harm perpetuated by what are traditionally considered “best practices” in fundraising. ⠀ And this isn’t unique to our sector, this happens whenever truths about the not-so-peaceful or equitable history (and present) of our world, our country, and its institutions come up too. ⠀ But, please remember that this defensiveness exists, whether consciously or unconsciously, to maintain the status quo, because as the poet and author Maya Angelou said, “you can't really know where you're going until you know where you have been.” ⠀ So, if our goal as institutions (and citizens) is to progress forward, we’ve got to take an honest and critical look at where we are now, and where we’ve been. . . . @theethicalrainmaker is a podcast that is fed up with the inequity in the world of nonprofits and philanthropy. This week, I was overjoyed and so proud to attend the 5 Year Anniversary Celebration of @villanuevaedgar’s book, Decolonizing Wealth. @decolonizingwealth Edgar is one of the most inspired and generous souls I know, and I feel really lucky to have worked and traveled across the country with him in the early years of DWP! He’s a brilliant visionary, and also an incredible strategist. The dialogue he’s brought and amplified — even the Smithsonian recognizes the impact of the Decolonizing Wealth Project as changing the course of history. And his kindness and generosity as a public figure is also true behind closed doors. I love you boo! Congratulations not only on five years since the book, but on all of the amazing successes, including over $15 Million raised and invested in Black and Indigenous communities. Edgar also knows how to throw a party — with that gorgeous @caraventer, and the rest of the team! @charlylowry always brings me to tears — love you sis! @dallasgoldtooth was a phenomenal MC. @ericmicha3l’s hoop dancing was mesmerizing (scroll for video). Mind continues to be blown at #GrantSummit. Session this morning about shifting the narrative between orgs and funders re equity and inequality in philanthropy. This is such an important discussion to have with funders. We need to build inroads to representation, including holding funders as accountable to equity and justice as they hold their grantees. We are all in this for the same reason, but unless we build a community around trust and collaboration, we will never move beyond the scarcity mindset that holds us back. #Grants #CommunityCentricFundraising

Double-Up Donation Weekend is our biggest fundraiser of the year, when we celebrate our NaNoWriMo community with super fun prize giveaways, double the donor thank-you goodies, and, as always, lots of writerly joy. This year, we’re hosting the fundraising marathon extravaganza on Saturday, November 4 and Sunday, November 5, 2023. We’re setting a 150 million word count goal and a USD $150,000 fundraising goal for Donation Weekend, all in support of NaNoWriMo’s nonprofit mission to encourage creativity and build worlds both on and off the page.  Stay tuned for more details. We’re looking forward to writing and FUN-draising with you soon! #NaNoWriMo25 #NaNoWriMo2023 #DoubleUpDonationWeekend #NaNoDonationWeekend #NaNoDonor #Fundraising #CommunityCentricFundraising #NaNoWriMo #writersofIG #writing
