- - - RECENSIONE - - - “Il priorato dell’albero delle arance” di Samatha Shannon 4⭐️ - Il tratto che sicuramente salta più all’occhio di questo romanzo é la forte presenza femminile, abbiamo infatti delle protagoniste forti e intraprendenti in grado di mostrare il valore delle donne e anche alcuni pregiudizi legati soprattutto all’ambiente di corte (in primis Sabran che viene valorizzata è considerata solo per la sua capacità di procreare oppure Ead costretta alle apparenze dei bei vestiti ecc…). Entrando nel dettaglio devo ammettere che l’inizio é un po’ complicato, tanti eventi che si mischiano, tanti POV e nessuna spiegazione, ma basta andare un po’ avanti e si viene coinvolti dalla storia. Proprio i POV multipli sono - infatti - fra i punti forti di questo romanzo; Abbiamo infatti 4 diversi punti di vista che corrispondono ad altrettante storie parallele che danno quel senso di diversificazione in grado di rendere l’opera così speciale, le trame dei POV sono - infatti - estremamente diverse vediamo il mondo degli intrighi di corte, quello degli addestramenti è quello un po’ più avventuriero. Proprio per questa ragione la trama non presenta punti morti dal momento che quando un POV é un po’ più statico l’adrenalina viene data dagli altri. Sempre legato alla trama é però quello che a mio parare é uno dei difetti più grandi di quest’opera: la quasi assenza di world building, leggendo questo libro veniamo infatti catapultati in un mondo che non viene presentato, dove i dettagli del passato appaiono - in maniera marginale- solamente in corso d’opera. Restando sui piccoli difetti mi sento di aggiungere come anche lo scontro finale potesse esser affrontato meglio e in maniera più dettagliata. March Reading Wrap-Up ⤵️ This month passed whip-quick. Being able to spend the first week (my spring break) unplugged definitly made the month feel shorter. And as the end of my dissertation draws near, the pressure increases and the time flies by too quickly. But among my writing and research and hiking and crafting, I read six books this month. 1.) Warrior Girl Unearthed by Angeline Boulley. I learned so much from this novel, and also became enraged by how museums treat indigenous bodies and artifacts. The spunky main character and her colorful cast of friends made this an enjoyable read. #DiversityAcrossGenres 2.) Build Your House Around My Body by Violet Kupersmith. This is a haunting novel. The story is fragmented, told over a series of time gaps and jumps. It follows a group of characters all struggling with some aspect of their identity, and I enjoyed getting to see how their story lines fit together. Highly recommend! #DiversityAcrossGenres 3.) The Girl Who Drank the Moon by Kelly Barnhill. A Newbery award-winning novel about memory, fear, grief, and family. Fabulous prose and engaging world-building. 4.) Silver Nitrate by Silvia Moreno-Garcia. A fun, suspenseful novel full of the faded glamour of old Hollywood and lots of film history facts. #ReadLatineLit and #DiversityAcrossGenres. 5.) The Last Cuentista by Donna Barba Higuera. A YA space adventure about the importance of stories and history. I wrote a fuller review in my last post. An additional #ReadLatineLit and #DiversityAcrossGenres. 6.) Legends and Lattes by Travis Baldree. I love a cozy fantasy, and this novel hit the spot! A delightful story of friendship (and romance), problemsolving, and pastries. I’m glad I managed to squeeze this one in for my #tbrScavengerHunt read this month. I’ve continued my streak of reading only novels that are fabulous! All of these books were four and five star reads for me. Each novel was a standout read, but if I had to choose one, 🐍Build Your House Around My Body was such a unique story with glorious prose. What was your favorite book from March?

So I'm just gonna put the Martyr in there. 📔 Book with a one word title - Starquake. I have very few one word title books. So I'm pretty much just reusing the same ones over and over. Because this category comes up a lot 😅 ⛰️ A daunting book - so I'm not sure what a daunting book would be. Because if I'm interested in reading a book I don't care how long it is. I actually prefer books to be over 600 pages. So I decided to just through in The Forgetting Moon because it's around 750 pages or something like that. 🖐️ A book over 500 pages - this is just a simplified edition of the previous category isn't it? 😜 Anyway! I HAVE HAVE HAVE to read some books off my physical TBR in April. I have not read any in March. I had a lot of ARC’s due this month even though I try super hard not to get myself into these predicaments so I can have a healthy balance. The game is simple - I am doing a TBR Scavenger Hunt. What this means is I am providing 20 prompts to help clear off some books from my physical TBR. You know to make room for new ones. In order to complete the Scavenger Hunt you must finish a minimum of 3 prompts. The reason I like to do scavenger hunts is because I don’t actually know what most of my covers look like. This inspires me to be more thoughtful about the type of book I’m looking for and usually makes me try books I’ve put off for one reason or another. I recently saw @bookwormshadows do the TBR Scavenger Hunt and thought I would join. 📚A book with 500+ pages: Don Quixote. This is one I plan to pick up in June and July. 📚A book under 300 pages: The Village of Stepanchikovo. This is one of the few Dostoevsky stories (at least longer ones) that I haven't read. Hoping to get to it this year! 📚A book recently added to my TBR: The Tiwsted Ones. I've heard a lot about the author but never this book. Grabbed it from a little free library and hopefully I'll pick it up and see what I think. 📚A book with a one word title: Devoted by Dean Koontz. This is the first of the books he published under his new publisher a few years ago and for some reason, I haven't picked it up. I think I've read every one since then (except the kindle specific ones). Hopefully I'll get to it soonish! 📚A book from a recently started series: I haven't been reading very many series, so I didn't have one for this. I started Legends of the First Empire back in 2017 and I have this final book to read. I plan to do that this year. Between writing my third dissertation chapter and work, I didn't have a lot of time for reading, so audio books and novellas for the win! 1) Elatsoe by by Darcie Little Badger. A fun paranormal murder mystery about a Native American girl who can see and speak with ghosts. One of my #DiversityAcrossGenres reads this month. 2) Saints of the Household by Ari Tison. A coming of age story about two Puerto Rican boys living in Michigan. A #DiversityAcrossGenres read and my first #ReadLatineLit book this year. 3) Thistlefoot by GennaRose Nethercott. Based on Jewish folklore, this story centers two siblings from the Yaga family who inherit their grandmother's house. The catch? The house has chicken legs. 4) Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep by Philip K. Dick. A classic scifi novel that wrestles with the question, what does it mean to be human? 5) The Beautiful Ones by Silvia Moreno-Garcia. A Jane Austen-esque romance with a touch of magic. Another #DiversityAcrossGenres read and #ReadLatineLit book. 6) All Systems Red by Martha Wells. Following the android theme, a novella about a robot and the humans he's been paid to protect. 7) Mother of the Sea by Zetta Elliott. A novella about the Middle Passage. January Reading Wrap-Up ⤵️ In January, I read eight books. Mostly, I listened to audio books, and the Shakespeare play was the only paper book I read this month. 1) Second Place by Rachel Cusk, a meandering novel about a frusterated wife and mother who has an emotional affair with an artist. 2) Saving Time by Jenny Odell, nonfiction by one of my favorite authors. A meditation on productivity culture and the different ways we can experience time. Also, my first #DiversityAcrossGenres read and my January #tbrScavengerHunt 3) Spice Road by Maiya Ibrahim. A fun YA novel inspired by Indian mythology and history. 4) Henry VI, Part I. A Shakespeare play that's been on my tbr for too long. 5) Foundation by Isaac Asimov. A classic scifi novel that I was only slightly dissapointed to find didn't follow the Apple TV series. 6) A Spoonful of Time by Flora Ahn. An adorable book about the importance of memory and healing inter-generational trauma. Also a #DiversityAcrossGenres read. 7) Gold Diggers by Sanjena Sathian. A magical realism coming-of-age story about a second-generation Indian-American boy growing up in the state of Georgia. 8) The Burried and the Bound by Rochelle Hassan. A queer love story set in a modern-day town that boarders fairyland. Stand-out reads: 🌷 Saving Time by Jenny Odel 🥣 A Spoonful of Time by Flora Ahn With these books, I spent a lot of ✨️time✨️ thinking about productivity, the importance of rest, and memory. One of my goals in January was to lean into rest and find alternative ways to measure my productivity and success that would help take some of the pressure and stress off completing my degree. I ended up making a lot of crafts, emphasizing relaxation in the evening, and creating hard boundaries between work and home. I'm looking forward to bringing these habits with me into February.

As a grad student, obviously I love a challenge. So this year, I am joining four different Instagram book challenges to focus my reading. 1️⃣ The first is #DiversityAcrossGenres, hosted by @booksonadventures and @reading.and.roaming. I’ve already selected the twelve titles that I’ll read for this challenge. 3️⃣ A challenge should be challenging, right? I’ve been avoiding reading larger books lately so that I can up my book count while reading less pages, but I’m going to try the #bigbookreading2024 challenge to try and read some chunkier titles this year. 4️⃣ I also want to highlight Latinx writers in my reading lists this year, and maybe even read a book or two in Spanish. #ReadLatineLit hosted by @lupita.reads will keep me accountable. A reading goal I have this year is to read more from my TBR piles. Yes, piles. I have several physical TBR stacks around the house, an Amazon list, and my Goodreads list. Another goal of mine is to read MORE for pleasure and less for a challenge. I’ve truly enjoyed the reading challenges I’ve done over the last few years, but I always pressure myself to complete them, which, kind of makes reading a chore instead of for fun.
