🎄 📖 Christmas book review 📖 🎄 It Happened One Christmas by Chantal Guertin @chantelguertin ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ This book was the perfect book for getting me into the Christmas spirit. Without snow this year was hard to get into the mood. But this book had alllll the best vibes! Set in the town of Chelsea in Quebec (which is a real place) it was the story of Zoey, a Christmas movie director looking to make a movie in the one place she ever had a perfect Christmas. She heads to Chelsea to obtain her permits only to bump into the handsome Ben who turns out to the be the one person who stands in her way. It’s a story of ice storms and Quebec traditions and happy endings. I had the wonderful pleasure of attending the #AUTHORity book club at the @thebookwardrobe in Streetsville, Ontario where Chantal spoke about her book. This was my first event at The Book Wardrobe and it will not be my last. What a wonderful indie bookstore owned by the most wonderful people! Along with the purchase of a copy of the book we got a an adorable cookie with the cover on it. And Chantal gave us a bookmark, a signed Christmas card and a beautiful hand knit sweater ornament. Thank you @thebookwardrobe and @chantelguertin for such a wonderful event. It was festive perfection!

🫐🩵📖 Oh, what a book! It appears that some of my 2023 favorites are going to come right at the end of the year, and The Berry Pickers by Amanda Peters is one of them. While I have yet to figure out exactly how to “review” this exquisite debut novel, I will say that it is sad, but hopeful, and just so beautiful. Inspired by stories from her Mi’kmaq grandfather, Peters has crafted a quiet, powerful story about loss and love, grief and injustice, and the complexity & strength of family bonds. I CRIED AND IT FELT SO GOOD! I might not have found this book without the #BookstaBestieTBRchallenge which is run by the fabulous Canadian duo @chrissykata_bibliophile and @books.and.bevies and which I love participating in. Thank you, booksta friends! 🎀 BOOK REVIEW - The Holiday Swap by Maggie Knox ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 🎀 I don’t consider myself a seasonal reader- I’m way too flaky for that 😜 -but I normally manage one seasonal book each season and for the 2023 holiday season, I read The Holiday Swap by Maggie Knox. What I liked about the book: The Parent Trapness- one of my all time favorite movies from my childhood (original not Lohan version) Cooking show/bakery setting Likable main and secondary characters Family dynamics Cute love stories though I was more partial to the Jake and Charlie storyline. Written by a writing duo- I always admire and wonder at that process. Minor quibbles: Slight spoiler here so avert eyes and skip over this- There is no way in hell any sane person would choose to go to an ER, get themselves into an examination room with a chart, just to reveal to the physician assistant boyfriend that one is not famous television cohost twin but is in fact the small town bakery twin. No girlfriend would do that in a parking lot or garage, coffee shop, his house, grocery store, etc. before dealing with the monstrosities of the American healthcare system. 1 year later HEA was a tad over the top. Honestly didn’t even think the epilogue was really necessary. QOTD: Do you prefer the The Parent Trap 1961 version starring Hayley Mills or the 1998 Lindsay Lohan version? Prompt Fits: Holiday Rom-Com @mrs._lauras_lit #litfor2023 Blue or White cover @kim.is.reading #readwithkimin2023 Holiday book @paws.and.read #pawsandreadathon2023 , #bookstabestietbrchallenge hosted by @books.and.bevies & @chrissykata_bibliophile , #hustleandrelaxstacks hosted by @therealbookhustler & @reading2relax , and #readwithdrbchallenge @readwithdrb By two or more authors #brightandbookishdecember @readinginpyjamas #4booksin4months hosted by @daybreaklittlefreelibrary #christmasbook #holidaybook #christmasbookstagram #holidaybookstagram #readingchallenge #bookstagramchallenge #bookstachallenge #bookreview #holidayromcom #romcombook

🩸🎄Christmas + murder? Yes! I’m not one for holiday romance books—I prefer that recipe fed to me in a #Hallmark movie— so I loved this twist on the holiday-themed story. As Swanson says in his author’s note: “The Christmas Guest is a short novel, or more accurately, a novella. I’ve always loved crime and mystery novellas and short novels. The big novel has its place, but there is something particularly special about the short mystery novel, but a story simple enough to be told in about 100 pages.” He also says he wrote this because of how he has always associated Christmas time with reading. And while this Christmas story is rife with blood and murder and ghosts, it is fabulously immersive and surprisingly thoughtful. The twist is also YUMMY! But I actually kind of guessed it this time, which I never do! Christmas miracle? 😂 Reading this on a dreary and cold winter Sunday was a perfect way to pass the time and to fulfill my #bookstabestietbrchallenge for December. Can’t wait to gift it! 🎁 ⬅️ Swipe to see a closeup of my new “Eat, Read and be Merry” socks by @outofprint that I bought at @riverbendbookshop in #westhartford #connecticut one of my fave bookshops! 🛍️ 📖 #QOTD ~ Are you gifting any books this season? #MrsGearyReads #readmore #TheChristmasGuest #beareader #christmasbooks #holidaybooks #bookcommunity #booksbooksbooks #bookish #novella #bookworm #booknerd #read #books #readmorebooks #bookstagram #bookchallenge #readingchallenge

Not to see her overbearing parents nor her distant brother, not even to visit her temperamental cat and beloved dog. And most importantly, she hasn’t been back to see Theo Fox. Her first love and brother’s best friend has been but a distant and painful memory for the last seven years. When Ellie’s travel site lands her back where it all began, her goal is to get in and out without seeing anyone from before. But life has other plans when she’s caught in a blizzard that leaves her seeking refuge in a cabin owned by none other than the infamous Theo. Theo Fox has been winning collegiate hockey and NHL championships since Ellie disappeared, but all he really wants is a second chance with the woman he can’t stop loving. When she shows up unannounced in Vermont, he’s determined to find out why she left and never returned. And if he has a little magic on his side, how to get her back. Told over the course of nine Christmas Eves and eight nights of Hanukkah, A Little Magic is a cozy, nostalgic story of young love, finding your voice, and the complexities of what it means to be a family. I visited this charming little used-and-new bookstore last weekend in Wells, Maine. Annie’s Book Stop has a great selection, and all new hardcovers are 20% off! 😍 They also have tons of used paperbacks perfect for reading by the beach, or curling up with by the fire. I bought two new books: 1. 🫐 Berry Pickers, which is set in Maine, written by an indigenous author, and recommended to me by #BookstaBestieTBRChallenge co-host @chrissykata_bibliophile 2. 🌾 Dead Sand, the first in a mystery series by an author unknown to me, but who lives nearby in New Hampshire. It sounds gripping and atmospheric—just my style—and I’m excited to check it out. #qotd ~ We’re fast approaching the end of the year—how are your 2023 reading challenges coming along? O C T O B E R 🧙🏻‍♀️ ~ The challenge was to read a “witchy book” in October. I tried starting two, but simply did not have time to do much reading outside of school. So my selection for the #BookstaBestieTBRchallenge is The Crucible by Arthur Miller. It’s my fourth or fifth #reread of this important American #classic, but I honestly think it was my best. Why? My students this year were *so* engaged and enthusiastic about the play, which made teaching it such a joy. To further their understanding & appreciation, my sophomore team and I took 50 of our 10th graders to Salem this week to experience some of the reality behind the fiction. They had a blast! It was an awesome day, and we’re so grateful to the fabulous cast of Cry Innocent for bringing the #salemwitchtrials to life for our kids. Swipe to see a few pics from our experience with them and the Salem Witch Museum. We also visited the simple but chilling Burying Ground memorial where the town pays respect to the 20 people executed unjustly during the hysteria of 1692. I had to capture my book with the stone of #JohnProctor who is such an important American figure and a complex literary tragic hero. #QOTD ~ Have you read or seen The Crucible? Ever visited a “witch city” like Salem, Massachusetts? If the answer is no to these questions, tell me a great book you’d recommend from your October reads! #thecrucible #mrsgearyreads #beareader #booksbooksbooks #bookish #octoberwrapup #read #books #readmore #readmorebooks #americanhistory #teachhardhistory #bookstagram #witchybooks #witchyreads #octoberreads #booklover #booklove #myreadinglife #booknerd #teacherlife #salem #cryinnocent #bridgetbishop

🧙‍♀️ WITCHY BOOK REVIEW - The Secret Society of Irregular Witches by Sangu Mandanna ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 🧙‍♀️ HAPPY HALLOWEEN BOOKSTAGRAM 🎃 I was not going to end October without reading at least on witchy book and this cute rom-com feel good gifted to me by @jay.rae.reads last year for Christmas was calling my name. What I enjoyed: Fun cute flirty banter between Mika and Jamie Mika is quite possibly the sweetest name for an MC Found family theme The isolating side and the special-what-makes-you you side of being “different” Experienced LOL moments Enjoyed how magic was described I’m hoping for a sequel- maybe some big adventure to figure out how to break the witch orphan curse. Minor quibbles: The book featured some great secondary characters but I would have liked maybe more background on each or an additional scene. 📚 Book Review 📚 Title: The Ghost Woods Author: C.J. Cooke What a trip! The Ghost Woods takes place at Lichen Hall, a mansion deep in the woods of Scotland, where many unwed mothers have been sent away to have their babies. Lichen Hall also happens to be in many local stories about ghosts, witches and strange beings. On top of all that, it's currently being eaten away by fungus, forcing the owners - the Whitlocks - to close off a part of the mansion. When Pearl Gorham arrives in 1965, the hall's secrets start to unfold. The concept behind this novel is disturbing, but definitely unique. The different eerie pieces of the story come together in the end, and gave me the occasional strange dream while reading. An enjoyable, dark read for anyone interested in folklore, creepy tales and stories like Alice in Wonderland, where some of the inspiration was taken from. I also recommend Cooke's The Lighthouse Witches, which I read last year. Great for spooky season! ⭐⭐⭐⭐ #BookReview #TheGhostWoods #CJCooke #TheLighthouseWitches #OctoberReads #FourStarReads #SpookySeason #SpookyReads #Folklore #ScottishFolklore #GhostTales #EerieRead #BookstaBestieTBRChallenge #MrsOenzym

SEPTEMBER WRAPUP! I read 9 books in September which is, I think, a record. This is a CRAZY MONTH for teachers! And I definitely sacrificed time I *should have* devoted to grading & recommendation-letter writing. BUT! I’ve been planning obsessively & delivering good, solid lessons. I’ve also organized 3 fundraisers & a #domesticviolenceawareness campaign, & helped select the 2024 CT Teacher of the Year. Phew! 😅 October is my month for catch-up on the other things. So while I’ll read fewer books this month, let’s celebrate what I did accomplish. 😂 📕 1. Yours, Truly — what a delight. I hate fake dating, but this book’s plot was positively Shakespearen and well-executed to boot. Spicy but not weird. Heartfelt while raising awareness of social anxiety & organ donation. Bravo, Abby Jiminez! 📕 2. Stone Cold Fox — Not my favorite book this month, but I liked it. Lots of subterfuge and cutting social commentary. 📕 3. Love, Pamela— What a treat. #PamAnderson is so much more than meets the eye! This is a vulnerable, thoughtful #memoir. I listened to the #audiobook & loved hearing the author tell her own story. 📕 4. Gallant—Quickly becoming one of my favorite authors! I had the pleasure of book-talking this dark, fairytale-like fantasy w/ students this week. We loved it. 📕 5. Out of My Mind—This middle-grade classic did not disappoint. See my previous post for a full review of this required human reading. #20booksbyblackfolx #tbr23in23 #readwhatyouown 📕 6. The House in the Cerulean Sea— a reread for me, and this inclusive, fantasy-lite novel was even better the second time around. Another required human read IMHO. #lgbtqbooks 📕 7. Tracks—My pick for the #September #bookstabestietbrchallenge prompt to read an #indigenousauthor. Erdrich is a gifted writer. See my full review in a previous post. #tbr23in23 #readwhatyouown 📕 8. Girls Like Us—I picked this up on a whim while at a #usedbookstore & couldn’t put it down. See my previous post for more. TY @booksandcohamden ! 📕 9. The Ink Black Heart—my biggest book…ever? See my review for more! #qotd ~ How was your reading in September? #mrsgearyreads #bookstagram #septemberwrapup #booklove #readmore

I’ve been trying to figure out how to write my review for The Berry Pickers by Amanda Peters for a few days now. I have to be honest I wasn’t going to review this book. I really did not know how I felt about it. This is the first book in a while that had me stumped on a review. But this book would not leave my thoughts so I knew it had made an impact on me and I had to write the review. The story is about a Mi’kmaq family who travels from Nova Scotia to Maine every summer to pick blueberries. One day their daughter Ruthie was sitting on a rock and then she was gone. Ruthie’s brother Joe was the last one to have seen her. This storey spans over many years of trying to find Ruthie/Norma and Joe’s struggle of not being able to keep his sister safe and how it factored in on the man he became. There is family tragedies, racism, dealing with alcohol addictions, miscarriages and Illnesses. The ending had me in tears!! It is a very moving story. I did not realize how much it was until a few days after finishing the book. I think it could very well be in my top five for this year. Congratulations @amandapetersauthor for such a spectacular debut!! This was also my pick for the September #bookstabestietbrchallenge hosted by myself and @books.and.bevies

My choice for the September #bookstabestietbrchallenge was Tracks by Louise Erdrich. The prompt was to choose an #indigenousauthor and Erdrich is a go-to for me. I didn’t realize that this book, published in 1988, is the third in the #LoveMedicineSeries and I wonder if I would have been able to follow the narrative a bit better had I known the characters. My getting a bit lost in the telling aside, this short novel is impressive in every way. Erdrich is a wordsmith of great power, infusing her stories with magical realism, sweet details, and an aching humanity, all the while delivering little-told First Nations history. Here’s a quick summary: The Love Medicine novels tell the story of four Anishinaabe families that are all somehow connected to each other. Set on reservation land in North Dakota, Tracks reveals the backstory of several characters in the series. Tracks has two narrators: a tribal elder named Nanapush, and a young girl of mixed lineage named Pauline. In Nanapush’s chapters, he is talking to Lulu, his granddaughter who has been estranged from her mother Fleur—arguably the most fascinating character. Nanapush is telling stories to Lulu that explain their shared histories, and why Fleur sent her daughter away. Simultaneously we hear Pauline’s story, which is one of trauma and loss. Tracks explores the relationship between Native Americans and those who sought to silence them, and the immense impact that whites had on their quality of life, family bonds, culture, land, and survival. It also examines the tension between Christianity and Native beliefs. While at some points strange, Tracks is a story you won’t soon forget. #mrsgearyreads #qotd ~ tell me one of your September reads! 🍁 #bookchallenge #beareader #louiseerdrich #tracks #ownvoices #readdiversebooks #weneeddiversebooks #tbr23in23 #diversifyyourbookshelf #read #books #readmorebooks #readmore #readwhatyouown #myunreadshelf #booksbooksbooks #booklove #indigenousliterature #dualpov #bookish #booklover #booknerd #bookworm

#twofortuesday Hey Booksta. I managed to get through another set of books in a series in the past few weeks. This time books 2 & 3 of the Hades and Persephone series by Scarlett Sinclair. Here’s my quick review of both while I anxiously await my verrrry delayed book 3 preorder. Warning spoilers ahead… Touch of Ruin: This one was the definition of miscommunication trope. And a bit of a degradation of Persephone’s character. But I did love the intimate scenes with Hades. And my love for Hermes and his endearing relationship with Sephy just makes me happy. Touch of Malice: Book three drops is in the aftermath of Hades and Persephones’s engagement. We get a return of communication, but almost at the expense of intimacy. I was also expecting a lot more from the war that was so heavily played up. One bonus was a character really starting to redeem themselves for me and that was Apollo. He is some good character building and we start to see Persephone’s influence on him. And that cliff hanger. I am even more desperate for Touch of Chaos now! QOTD: what upcoming bool release has you biting your nails for it to come out? These also hit my indigenous/ BIPOC author prompts for the #readwithkimin2023 and #bookstabestietbrchallenge

I like to think Evelyn Hugo would approve of this view. 🌆🌴 I have had a #TJR kind of summer, and have loved every minute of it. While #EvelynHugo was not my favorite of her books, it was the book that brought about the greatest emotional response from me—mothers and daughters are a trigger for my tears these days. 😭 Though not technically a series, I loved the ways in which this book overlaps with Carrie Soto, Malibu Rising, and Daisy Jones: Subtly. Smartly. And yet, they are all so singular, so different, and each so strong in their own way. I’m not sure how @tjenkinsreid is so well versed in so many historical and cultural moments. From classic Hollywood (Evelyn), to 1980s & the world of tennis (Carrie), to surfing (Malibu), and 70s rock & roll (Daisy), TJR proves she is a force, and a very gifted writer who creates immersive atmosphere but centers lives and relationships, especially those of women, and this “Barbie summer” was the most perfect time to dive into these lives and loves and losses. I felt immersed in each history and swept up by each story. The books, including Evelyn, are so well balanced: steamy, smart, poignant, funny, intense, critical but hopeful. This novel is fabulous— it started hot, slowed down, but then grabbed me by the throat and made me FEEL THE FEELINGS. It also left me thinking and wondering and grateful for having read it. I absolutely love and appreciate the stories this author is bringing to light. Give me more! #mrsgearyreads #beareader #bookstagram #bookish #readmore #read #books #bookcommunity #booksbooksbooks #booknerd #booklove #booklover #reading #bookstabestietbrchallenge

📚 Book Review 📚 Title: The Unhoneymooners Author: Christina Lauren Somehow, this was my first Christina Lauren novel! I thought for sure I'd read one before, but I guess I was wrong. The Unhoneymooners is about Olive, whose twin sister Ami has just gotten married. When a wedding catastrophe happens, making all but Olive and her arch-nemesis Ethan the only ones who aren't ill, Ami begs her sister and new brother-in-law to take her free honeymoon in Hawaii. After very reluctantly accepting, both Olive and Ethan are prepared to spend ten days pretending to be married in order to take the free trip of a lifetime. Although it's a pretty typical enemies-to-lovers romance, I really enjoyed the little plot twists, the romance and the characters in this one. I could feel the tension between Olive and Ethan, which made the book hard to put down. Just the right amount of hot and spicy for my #BookstaBestieTBRChallenge pick for the month of August. It was a very bingeable, loveable romance. I will definitely be picking up another Christina Lauren book in the near future! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ #BookReview #TheUnhoneymooners #ChristinaLauren #FiveStarReads #AugustReads #BeachRead #RomanceNovel #BingeableReads #EnemeiesToLovers #NYTBestsellingAuthor #MrsOenzym

📖 Book Review 📖 Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This of course is not a new book, having been published in 2018, but it is a favourite of many here on #bookstagram You can officially add me to the list of Eleanor Oliphant lovers! I actually thrifted this book from a local thrift store and was so happy to find it. It felt a lot like a modern classic. And I have had it on my shelves for a long time, so it was the perfect pick for #bookstabestietbrchallenge prompt for longest book on your TBR shelf in June. And I did read it in June, but I’m now just getting to review it. I adored Eleanor. She was so simple and yet so complicated. The story was delightfully unexpected and surprisingly twisty. Eleanor did not have a normal upbringing, to the point that she herself doesn’t even remember everything. She plagued with a controlling Mother who has done something terrible. We the reader get to understand the past along with Eleanor as she upends her life by letting other people in. Something she has never done. Honeyman’s writing was incredible and her character development was top notch! If you haven’t read this yet, consider this your nudge to get your hands on this amazing read. 🍸Beverage pairing: Vodka, straight from a Top Gear mug Vodka would absolutely be the right match here. But as it plays a pivotal part in this novel for reasons I will not describe due to not giving the story away, I did not want to put it in my picture. IYKYK. Q: What oldie but goodie have you read this year?

The grin I had when I finished Mr. Wrong Number was back with The Love Wager! This is a book I really needed right now. Lynn Painter is the Queen of Rom-Com and an auto-buy author for me. I love her banter and what she does with her characters. I loved Jack in Mr. Wrong Number and loved him even more in this one. Halle and Jack meet at his sister Olivia and Colin’s wedding. She is the “tiny bartender” and somehow gets in the way of Jack’s breakup with Vanessa at the wedding. One thing leads to another and Halle wakes up in Jack’s hotel room the next morning. Since they are both single their friends convince them to try a dating app. Halle and Jack find each other on it and start up a friendship. They make a Love Wager as to who will find a serious relationship first. However as best friends now they start to realize their feelings for each other. I don’t want to divulge more information to ruin the story for you. All I could say is I wish it did not end. I wanted more of Halle and Jack! This book made me laugh, had some spice and was a quick read. I highly recommend for any rom-com reader. I cannot wait to read more books by @lynnpainterbooks This was my choice for the #bookstabestietbrchallenge where the prompt was to choose a hot and spicy book. Thank you to my bookstabestie @books.and.bevies for my gifted copy!

🦋 BOOK REVIEW- Along the Shore by L.M. Montgomery, edited by Rea Wilmshurst ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 🦋 LOOK at the butterfly I captured, this photo made me so happy. I haven’t felt like taking a lot of bookstagram pictures lately but this lucky shot renewed my enthusiasm and love for this medium. Along the Shore is a collection of 16 short stories written by L.M. Montgomery which originally appeared in magazines and newspapers from 1897 to 1930. Each story features shore life in small towns along the Prince Edward Island coastline of Canada. What I liked: Gorgeous descriptions Beautiful writing left me utterly charmed Many sweet characters and stories- most uplifting, a few sad Classic stories but more accessible and understandable than some other popular classic authors. Minor quibbles: Maybe this comes from reading 16 stories back to back, but most of the stories featured an amazingly beautiful woman and by the end of the collection, they all kind of merged into one with little to no distinction. I’m a big fan of L.M. Montgomery and have finished all 8 in her Anne of Green Gables series. It’s one of the few series I've managed to read in its entirety. I’m hoping to collect and read the rest of her works. QOTD: What’s the last graphic, reel, or picture you did that made you happy to be a bookstagrammer? Prompt Fits: A book written by a Canadian author- L.M. Montgomery - author of Anne of Green Gables is one of Canada’s most beloved authors @books.and.bevies and @chrissykata_bibliophile #bookstabestietbrchallenge @kates.book.nook #shrinktheshelf @ohio_is_for_readers #tbrreductionchallenge @torriereadsalot #releaseyourshelf @reading_mom.me @bluegrassbookshelf @bernluvsbooks #clearyourshelfchallenge #shortstories #classicreads #canadianauthor #bookreview #bookreviewer #bookreviews #bookoutside #bookoutdoors #bookstareview #readingchallenge #bookstagramchallenge #bookchallenge #bookcommunity #fictionbook #womensfiction #finishedbook #recentreads #2023reads #booksandbutterflies #vintagebook

The Head, the Heart and the Heir by @alicehanovauthor has been on my TBR since I met the author at a book fair in April. This book was amazing! About a lost princess with growing powers and a stressful homecoming that seems to go wrong at every turn. Throw in the reappearance of an estranged family member and you've struck gold! The action, the magic and the romance was perfectly balanced in the first book of this series. I loved all the references to different mythologies and legends. Can't wait to see where the rest of this series goes! #alicehanov #theheadtheheartandtheheir #canadianauthor #canadianyabooks #yafantasy #bookstabestietbrchallenge

My goal this year is to finish The Simple Wild series by K.A. Tucker. I just finished the sequel Wild at Heart and I must say it’s as good if not better than The Simple Wild. When K.A. Tucker had me crying already at the beginning of the book I knew it will be a favourite! Calla and Jonah have moved to their own home and started their own business called The Yeti. This story has us seeing how they manage to build this home (you see doses of city spoiled girl at this point with her shopping) and how Calla adjusts to living in Alaska. I must say there were moments when I thought she was not going to make it in Alaska but the neighbours she met made Alaska a bit more tolerable. Muriel is the overbearing town help, Roy the curmudgeon has his own secrets and is a miserable old guy, Marie (who swoons over Jonah) lives now within minutes of their home and of course Toby who is always there to help all play an important role in Calla’s adjustment. I loved the all the descriptions of Alaska. It brings back so many memories of my visit there. I would love to go back one day. There are some tense moments, ok more than some, a lot, but Calla and Jonah mange to get through them. The moment with the bear, yikes! I honestly have fallen in love with this series so far and with Calla and Jonah. I cannot wait to read the next one! Is there a couple in a book or series that you have read where you just cannot forget about? This was my choice for the #bookstabestietbrchallenge where the prompt was choose a Canadian author @katucker_

Pool time in Disney included this thriller. It’s been on my #TBR for ages, but TBH, I wasn’t really 💯 thrilled with #thelasttimeilied. However, the ending definitely picked up the pace and it finished with a satisfying twist. The frozen “Sauvignon Pasion” from the pool bar was a perfect accompaniment.🍹📖☀️ #qotd ~ Have you visited any Disney property? If so, what’s your favorite ride, activity, or aspect? 🪺 BOOK REVIEW- Where the Forest Meets the Stars by Glenda Vanderah ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5🪺 My last post pic featured a fake hydrangea flower- this picture is the real thing and isn’t it absolutely gorgeous! Where The Forest Meets the Stars by Glendy Vanderah was my IRL book club pick. It was one very low on my radar- in fact I don’t recall it ever being featured on anyone’s bookstagram but it was published a few years ago in 2019. What I liked: Ursa is such a charming likable character I loved the strong bond formed between Jo and Ursa particularly when they were fighting for one another at the hospital. Good writing, interesting characters for a relatively simple story. Cancer survivor representation Minor quibbles: There were a few Get Real moments when it came to Gabriel Nash. Also, the baddies drive to get at a 9 year old seemed a bit far fetched. Prompt Fits: Owned for awhile TBR June’s #bookstabestietbrchallenge hosted by @books.and.bevies @chrissykata_bibliophile Considering I took this picture in June 2021- yep this has been on my shelf for awhile… also this is one of my #23booksin2023 🙌 Book #5 out of 23 for #backlistbooks23 @lemonyreads @bookswithnopictures @thebookscript & #23in2023tbrchallenge @groundedinreads QOTD: Have you featured a book you’ve seen little if anything on bookstagram? I wasn’t sure if I was ready to read one of the most loved books of Bookstagram so I waited. Then Blair and I decided that this month’s prompt for #bookstabestietbrchallenge would be the book that has been longest on your TBR. So I knew it was time. One word sums up my review….Phenomenal!! I loved meeting Monique at the beginning of the book and then of course Evelyn Hugo. What a life she led. I wasn’t sure how someone could have so many husbands but for Evelyn it just worked. These husbands all led to our introduction of her true love. I love how both Monique’s and Evelyn’s stories intertwined by the end of the book. I have read other books by Taylor Jenkins Reid but so far this one has to be my favourite. What is your favourite Taylor Jenkins Reid book?

📚 Book Review 📚 Title: The Hating Game Author: Sally Thorne I'm not blushing, you're blushing..... Lucy and Josh have been nemeses since Josh's first day at B&G Publishing. They go out of their way to make it known that they hate each other. So much so that HR has had to get involved on multiple occasions. They find themselves going head-to-head for the same promotion, upping the ante. All is well in the hating game until one moment alone together changes everything. I could not put this one down. The absolute perfect combination of steam, romance and humour (I actually laughed out loud a couple of times). Lucy and Josh are definitely and officially one of my favourite book couples. I'm interested in checking out the movie, but I've taken a peek and Josh is not at all how I pictured him. Maybe I want to stick with my version and not have it ruined? Not sure yet...But if you haven't picked this one up yet and you're in the market for a light rom-com, give The Hating Game a try! I can't believe I let it sit on my shelf for as long as I did. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ #BookReview #TheHatingGame #SallyThorne #JuneReads #Unputdownable #FiveStarBooks #RomanticComedy #RomanceNovel #SteamyRomance #SteamyNovel #BookstaBestieTBRChallenge #TBRShelf #BookToMovie #MrsOenzym

🪿 BOOK REVIEW- The Goose Girl by Shannon Hale ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5🪿 I haven’t read a YA or Middle Grade book in awhile that didn’t make me too old - this may account for my 5 star rating but if it does, oh well. Also I drove around a neighborhood until I found some geese. On both counts, I am not ashamed. This is the second time I’ve featured geese on my page 😆. What I liked about the book: Focus on Ani’s growth in confidence and strength, her talents, and her friendships. While there is a sweet love story between Ani and Geric it’s not a distracting focus and it’s age appropriate. A lot of wonderful secondary characters like Enna, Finn, and Conrad to look forward to in future books. Loved the scene when Ani told off that group of advisors and councilman A nice balance and blending of magic, personal growth, action, love, and social justice. There’s an unexpected amount of action and death. QOTD: What was your favorite middle grade or YA book growing up? Meh. 🤷🏼‍♀️ I’ve been kinda snoozing my way through both of these this past week. Without a doubt, they are both beautifully written. And they both come to dramatic (and shockingly violent) conclusions, but along the way? 🥱 #OPioneers ~ Who am I to rate a classic? No one, that’s who. But while it’s obvious that this book is important in our canon, capturing a spirit of America so essential to our history AND centering a woman at the helm of making that history, the pioneering Willa Cather’s famous story of Alexandra lacked (for ME!) enough tension and conflict until close to the end. I did appreciate the historical elements and setting, though! And this was my choice for the May #bookstabestietbrchallenge “classic” prompt, so I loved having the perfect reason to complete it since it was also on my #tbr23in23 pile. Here’s to meeting reading goals! #PeaceLikeARiver ~ This had all kinds of charm, and was reminiscent of some famous Bildungsroman classics like Mockingbird and Huck Finn. But I did not fall in love the way I’d hoped to. Both of these have been on my #TBR for ages and ages, so I’m glad to have finally finished them, but they won’t go down as favorites. #QOTD ~ What did you read this week? Was it meh? Or did you love it? #mrsgearyreads #beareader #readinggoals #readingchallenge #readmorebooks #read #books #readmore #booksbooksbooks #bookstagram #bookcommunity #bookish #booknerd #bookworm #booklover #booklove #myreadinglife #classicnovels #willacather #bibliophile #bibliolifestyle #myunreadshelf #theunreadshelfproject2023 📚 ❤️

🖊️ Happy May!! 📄 It’s time for another #bookstabestietbrchallenge prompt from @chrissykata_bibliophile and I. For May we are encouraging you to select a Classic novel from your TBR. This counts for classic retellings too (e.g. Demon Copperhead, Hester, song of Achilles, These Violent Delights) Swipe to see my choice….. I will finally be reading The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. And as usual, share what you will be reading this month via stories using the templates in my highlights and when you tag us in your posts you might just receive some surprise gifts! Q: What classic (or retelling) will you pick?

💐It’s May 1st! 💐 Blair @books.and.bevies and I have a new #bookstabestietbrchallenge prompt for May! We are asking you to choose a classic or a classic retold from your bookshelf. I have chosen Anne of Green Gables by L.M Montgomery. I have never read the series so now is the best time to start the beloved classic. What is your favourite classic to read? Here is how the challenge works: It’s a simple and fun challenge that we hope you will enjoy and participate in. We will be posting a prompt each month and all you need is to find that corresponding book and read it. Simple. But we would like you to post in your stories that you are reading it because we would like to keep track as to who is playing. Please tag us @books.and.bevies and @chrissykata_bibliophile and use #bookstabestietbrchallenge in posts because you might earn surprise gifts like bookmarks. We would love you to share in your stories but those will not count towards surprise gifts. I cannot wait to see everyone’s book choices for May! ⭐️ swipe to see this month’s prompt and the book I have chosen.

📚 April Wrap Up 📚 I didn't read a lot of books in April, but they were all great! I loved Take My Hand the most, with an honourable mention to VenCo. I can't wait to delve into VenCo at our Book Club meeting in May! After having read Every Summer After for the #BookstaBestieTBRChallenge prompt, I'm looking forward to Fortune's next novel, coming out in May. In May, I'll be finishing my current read, The Secret Book of Flora Lea. I pre-ordered Meet Me at the Lake and Bryn Turnbull's next novel, The Paris Deception. Other May hopefuls include Closer by Sea and The Surgeon's Daughter. I'm also hoping for more outdoor reading in May! #MayWrapUp #MayReads #TakeMyHand #DolenPerkinsValdez #EverySummerAfter #CarleyFortune #VenCo #CherieDimaline #BookClub #BookClubRead #TheWiseWomen #GinaSorell #12Friends12Books #MayTBR #MayReadingGoals #ReadingGoals #MrsOenzym

❣️This picture would’ve been better if I had some cheese and crackers, or donuts, to pose with #TheWeddingDate by Jasmine Guillory—IYKYK—but alas, it’s diet season in this house! 😂 ❣️This has been on my physical #TBR for ages ( #unreadshelf challenge!) and while it will never be a favorite, I’m so glad to have read it. ❣️Guillory’s #romance was my pick for April’s #bookstabestietbrchallenge of a “light and fluffy book.” This certainly fit the bill, while also touching upon some complex issues related to race and to body image—sometimes both simultaneously. ❣️I rounded up on #Goodreads from 🌟🌟.💫 to a solid three because there were a number of things I appreciated about this book, but it just did not captivate me overall. I never really felt the connection between Alexa & Drew, and the spicy scenes felt very repetitive and sometimes…kind of cringey. I fast forwarded through a number of them in the 2nd half. Romance is not my go-to genre, so don’t take my word for it! I know so many people love this book and others in the series. Which leads me to my #QOTD ~ Have you read this? Did you love it? Does it get better with The Proposal? OR: tell me what you’re reading today! #mrsgearyreads ❣️ #bookstagram #beareader #biblioactivist #bookchallenge #readingchallenge #readdiversebooks #readblackwomen #diversifyyourshelf #20booksbyblackfolx #weneeddiversebooks #blackgirlmagic #blackgirljoy #bookish #booknerd #bookworm #readmore #booksbooksbooks #bookcommunity #readwhatyouown #unreadshelfproject2023 #clearyourshelfchallenge

📕 Book Review 📕 Two For the Road by @chantelguertin ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I was so excited to be picked for another @tandemcollectiveglobal read-along. This delightful #romcom from Canadian Chantel Guertin was just the book I needed. Gigi owns a Romance book store in Ann Arbor, Michigan that she inherited from her parents when they died in an accident. Her parents met in the most adorable way, over a book. A perfect meet cute. Gigi ever the hopeless romantic, ends up “falling in love” with the voice of the narrator of her favourite book. The same book her parents fell in love over. Funny thing is, he only ever narrated one book. His real job is running his family’s Bus Tour company in England. When her friends learn of her obsession they surprise her on her birthday for a trip on his Bus Tour. What happens next is a trip through England with an eclectic cast of characters who each have their own personal journeys to go on. I absolutely loved the characters and the bookish content. Many of my own beloved authors and books were mentioned in the story. This was exactly the light hearted read I was needing this month. I loved the English locations and it certainly has me wanting to travel to England. Thank you to Tandem and @doubledayca for gifting me this book in exchange for my review. AD-PR. And thank you to the following people who I had the pleasure of reading along with: @coocachoo @readingbetweenthevines @readbetween.the.wines @Reading_obsessively @timeforbooksandwine @bookwineclubtoronto @mrsmarvellousfiction @smalltownbookmom @books.and.bevies @cathyscozybooknook @bookhoarders_anonymous @janinesbookcorner @missalinaballerina @bookswithbenji @Anneotherbookplease @myburstingbookbag @lindsay.books @_thebookreview @books.over.breakfast @pawstoodream @chez_colline @bonkrarereads @kaleys23 @books_and_tea_with_me @chaptersread @readingwithramona @bookmunchies @bookswithmichellee @booksta.moments @forloveandnovels Q: Do you believe in fate?

📚 Book Review 📚 Title: Every Summer After Author: Carley Fortune Every Summer After is a debut novel about Percy Fraser who began cottaging with her parents in Barry's Bay, Ontario as a teenager. For six years, she spent summers at the cottage with Sam Florek, who became her best friend - and maybe more. The novel flips back and forth between those days and her adult years, a decade later. She is brought back to Barry's Bay after a whole decade away for Sam's mother's funeral. What pushed her away a decade ago? What will it be like going back after so much time has passed? Every Summer After is full of steam, love and surprises. It takes awhile for it to pick up its pace, but once it does, look out! The second half was hard to put down (and I may have skipped ahead at one point because I just had to know). A solid summer romance. I got to enjoy it in my backyard oasis this past weekend along with my Brümate, which I received from my husband @oenzym for Christmas. Any guesses as to which Ontario brewery the beer in the @brumate is from? ⭐⭐⭐⭐ #BookReview #EverySummerAfter #CarleyFortune #SummerRomance #CanadianAuthor #DebutNovel #TorontoNovel #DebutNovel #BarrysBay #SteamyRomance #SteamyNovel #FourStarReads #BackyardOasis #Brumate #OntarioBrewery #OntarioCraftBeer #BookstaBestieTBRChallenge #MrsOenzym

(audio)Book Review: This Tender Land by William Kent Krueger Published 2019 Historical literary fiction This book is one I've considered reading for several years due to its widespread praise, including from my mom who doesn't usually love this genre. I selected it for a book challenge this year and then decided it also fulfilled the prompt of a book that intimidates me for Blair (@books.and.bevies) and Christina's (@chrissykata_bibliophile) #BookstaBestieTBRChallenge. It fulfills the March prompt for #litfor2023 (a book 400+ pages as well! 👍 This book was exceptionally written and I will absolutely seek out more from this author. It wasn't an easy listen - it takes place in the 1930s in Minnesota when Native American children were abused in their residential schools. It involves children escaping scary adults and going out on their own. However, despite some of its difficult content, it was impossible not to root for these tenacious and loyal children who love fiercely and want so much more for themselves than what was offered at the school. The cast of characters along the way is fascinating, sometimes frightening and sometimes lovely, and the whole story concluded in a breathtaking way. This story is a loose retelling of the Odyssey and definitely has that flavour of an epic story and the classics. It won't be for everyone, but it was a solid 4.5⭐ from me and I loved the audio narration as well. Definitely recommend if you're wanting this type of story in your reading life. What book intimidates you?!

BOOK REVIEW: The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by V.E. Schwab - my first Schwab btw ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5/5 How long have I been intending to read this book? Let’s see, I had this book in my #21booksin2021 post, my #22booksin2022 post, & my #23booksin2023 post AND I took this picture in May 2021. But it is FINALLY READ! Even If I don’t read anything else in TBR, I would consider 2023 a win. QOTD: What’s your if-i-read-this-2023-win book title? Thank you @get.outside.and.read for leading the buddy read charge! Overall, I really enjoyed this book. It could be a bit slow at times but I expected that given it covers 300 years. I also think between the alternate timeline & the past timeline jumping years if not decades, & locations, a reader isn’t left with that adrenaline hook of finding out what happens next. Plus even if the past timeline is especially thrilling, readers know she lives after all… Despite the pace issues, I thought the ending was very clever & the plot/themes were incredibly thought provoking. Addie wanted freedom but what did that ultimately mean when she made her deal, what part of her deal would I find the hardest & darkest, how do you leave a mark if you can’t be remembered. In our mortal lives, we get to a certain point where we think about who is going to remember us, what is the point, what can I do, etc. Addie, living through ideas like art & music was genius & provided her much needed hope & solace. Henry’s wish & how it manifested with the world was interesting as well. Happy March everyone!! We’ve made it through the bulk of winter! One more month or hopefully only a few weeks to go! Spring is on the horizon and @chrissykata_bibliophile and I are here with another #bookstabestietbrchallenge prompt. While we might be getting closer to Spring, March is a long month and we might yet have some daunting weather ahead, we thought it was the perfect time to pick a book from your shelves that intimidates you. What makes for an intimidating book? It could be really long, or a topic or genre less comfortable for you. It could be an Instagram darling who’s hype you are fearful of. It’s entirely up to you. Personally I’m taking the “oh wow, that’s a big one” route! 😆 Swipe through to see my choice. I will be reading Age of Vice by @deeptikp As always we encourage you to play along. You can use the templates in my highlights to show us which book you will be reading. And don’t forget to post about your selection too using the tag #bookstabestietbrchallenge as we may choose to do some random gifting of participant’s this year. Happy Reading! Q: What book will you choose?

📚 February Wrap Up 📚 In February I found myself in a bit of a reading slump. Work and family life got busy, so I didn't always have the energy for reading. I started the month with Beautiful Little Fools by Jillian Cantor, which was definitely my favourite! I had a really hard time getting into Wild at Heart because it just wasn't right for me. It was my #12Friends12Books challenge pick this month. I enjoyed In My Dreams I Hold a Knife, which was my Book Club pick. I read A Death at the Party for my #bookstabestietbrchallenge this month. In March, it looks like I'll be reading The Last Bookshop in London by Madeline Martin. I've had a hard time getting into the CBC Canada Reads picks this month, but will keep trying. For my 12 Books from 12 Friends this month, I'll be reading Bess Kalb's Nobody Will Tell You This But Me. I might also dabble in some Daisy Jones with the series coming out next week. Who knows where March will take me!? Hoping I get lots read over March Break in a couple weeks. What's your most anticipated read for March? #FebruaryWrapUp #FebruaryReads #ReadingSlump #BeautifulLittleFools #WildAtHeart #Galatea #ADeathAtTheParty #InMyDreamsIHoldAKnife #BookClub #MarchReadingGoals #ReadingGoals #MarchBreakReads #MrsOenzym

Book Review: Yes & I Love You by Roni Loren Contemporary Romance, published 2021 by Sourcebooks Happy sunny #MondayMugz and hope everyone had a good weekend. I recently finished this lovely romance book, Yes & I Love You, alternating between audio and this print copy. I'd actually gotten this from Netgalley in 2021 but it didn't download properly and archived before I could listen to it so I'm glad I finally got to it! This book started off in quite a fun way - I really enjoyed getting to know Hollyn as a character as she just meets Jasper and they don't get started on quite the right footing. Hollyn has Tourettes as well as anxiety around new people and social situations. It was a very intimate experience reading her inner thoughts about meeting Jasper, who is an outgoing improv guy who easily chats with everyone. Both of these characters have things they've kept to themselves and they both aspire to lives a bit different from what they're currently living. I really liked the New Orleans setting and the friends picked up along the way in the story. One very swoony moment near the end really sealed how much I enjoyed this one, and I'm sure many others would agree! Anyone who's been in blogging or writing or a similar space would also enjoy the workplace setting in this novel. It fits the prompt of love for @kim.is.reading 's February challenge prompt!! (hello, it's even in the title ❤️) and I'll also count it as a very belated ARC for @books.and.bevies and @chrissykata_bibliophile' s #BookstaBestieTBRChallenge ❤️ What's in your Monday mug today? 2 coffees for me and now water! Lol ID: a red paperback book sits on a wooden table with a sunny blue sky in the background
