A community fire and feast with rites to mark the sowing season, purification of animals, time to move herds to higher pastures and some human revelry occurred at the start of summer for many peoples across the northern hemisphere for millennia. Probably originally signalled by the blooming of certain plants, the appearance of migratory birds and animals in the land, by the alignment of sunrises; sunsets and moons over megalithic structures and latest of all by a particular calendar date. We know it today in the isles of Britain as “Beltane” and often think of it as the start of summer according to “Celtic” (late Bronze Age/Iron age) traditions but the rites of Beltane are far older. Important to the first Neolithic pastoralists and farmers of our lands and known by other names there may well have been seasonal rites for human communities even before then. Different peoples, different times all descended to us through hazy folk memory in our various and wonderful May Day festivals. For me dwelling in the East Coast of Scotland summer feels a ways off yet, the Hawthorn isn’t out yet, and although we may have lit the ‘need fire’ last night in our revived fire celebrations some prefer to mark the 5th May (closer to the midway point between Equinox and Solstice) and others still mark old Beltane on what would now be the 12th May (Julian/Gregorian calendar changes). Energy is everywhere. ⚡️ It’s in everything. From a flower to a bowl to a chair to every cell of our being. 🧬 The energy we bring to something depends on the intention we have toward it, conscious or not. 👁 This past Sunday when I decided to wildcraft these dandelions, I was sure to be conscious of my energy. If I had been in a bad mood or in a rush aka a low frequency, I would not have immersed myself in this activity. Instead I felt soft, loving, warm, peaceful + joyful and very much in my feminine energy. Which was the perfect state to be in for the next step on this honey brewing journey. Some people use the entire dandelion head in their honey and this can make more of a bitter taste so I wanted to harvest just the petals. As I began the process, I realized how tedious this was going to be... and I was not deterred. I leaned into it, desiring to be present + delicate with each flower as I peeled back the lion tooth leaves to pluck the tender petals. I put on some sweet music and sat in devotion to this ritual. As I did I remembered that this is part of what being a green witch is all about. Being in present loving relationship with nature, flowers, herbs and the tasks that we use them for. I remembered that the ritual of concocting an herbal remedy is as much part of the medicine as the remedy itself. This beautiful perspective can be applied to so much in our lives. Creating something whether a business, an offering, a work of art, a homemade meal, a budget is meant to be enjoyed, not sped through to get to the end result. Kind of how happiness isn’t a destination, it’s the journey along the way. The more we rush through our lives in an attempt to get to some ultimate end that we think will give us something we can’t receive + enjoy now, the more we’ll miss out on all the magic, beauty + delight that is available to us. In each moment. Right now. ❣️

They were based on what people did, not what people believed.” These are the wise words of Margot Adler. I am going through a process of relearning who I am, my truest most authentic self. Not who the projections of others deemed me to be. Part of this remembering has reconnected me with my love of nature, cycles and seasonal living. I am a lover of the Moon, the Wheel of the Year, the Divine Feminine + Masculine and so I am practicing the embodiment of these essences. This past Sunday, in honor of Beltane I decided to make my own blend of dandelion honey for the first time! Under the warm of the golden sun, barefooted + in a flowy goddess dress, I harvested dandelions. Everything about this act was sweet, slow, intentional + divine. The other day I was taking an afternoon bath (my favorite) and from my tub I can see a big stand of Doug Fir trees behind our house. Where we're situated up on a hill, the wind gets a bit wild, and watching the trees dance in the strong wind reminded me of how flexible trees have to be. We tend to think of wood as sturdy and strong, which it is, but its strength comes as much from its flexibility as it does from its deep roots and sturdy trunk. Despite how scary it looks looking out the window and seeing these giant trees swaying in the wind so close to the house, their ability to bend is what keeps them standing tall. Trees teach us about this ability to stay adaptable, open to change, flexible while also being rooted, resilient, and sure of who we are. Energetics that are reflected in the Wood element, especially this time of year. Where have you become rigid? How do you stay connected to your roots while staying soft enough to be open to evolving and, ultimately, to hope for the future?
Emergence. That’s what this beautiful season of spring brings. Because while it may not literally look beautiful - there’s often dirty snow and lots of grey days - its beauty is reflected by what’s humming just beneath the surface, just below the soil. Those days of winter hibernation and nourishment mean that we emerge ready to plant the seeds and start the projects that took root in winter. As Tolstoy tells us, “Spring is the time of plans and projects.” And TCM agrees. In Chinese Medicine, Spring is associated with the Wood element. Growth that sprouts from deep roots. For me, Spring often brings an enormous rush of creativity and fresh desire to start new projects. Even just looking back at my old blog, I notice how many posts I’d write in Spring compared to other seasons. Apparently I had a lot to say in March and April. I notice the same thing coming around this year too. It feels good to write (hello, friends!). To plan. To start new things and come up with new ideas. That’s the Wood element showing up. It feels good to begin. This time of year there’s a big push for new life, literally and metaphorically. >> How is that showing up for you right now? It's been rainy and cold all week, not that I'm complaining, and there's a sweet baby who has been a pleasant distraction but I'm falling behind on work. *On a side note, how do people work from home with kids? We get lots of questions about our face masks: Why do they come dry?
