🪶 《기획회의》 607호 기획자노트릴레이 코너에 《조응》을 만든 이야기를 실었습니다. 이미 너무 많은 지식과 정보와 해석이 있는 와중에, 어떤 앎이 더 필요하고 또 굳이 책으로 낼 만한지를 늘 고민합니다. 다른 편집자님들도 마찬가지겠죠 🙂 잉골드의 《조응》은 가망서사가 지향하는 생태 철학을 궁리하던 중 만난 책입니다. 인간과 비인간 관계를 다루는 여러 논의들이 근대적 사고방식과 체계를 근본적으로 넘지 못한다는 갈증이 있었던 차였고, 무엇보다 몸과 마음을 움직이는 이야기를 찾고 있었어요. 《조응》을 내기로 한 건 주제나 내용뿐 아니라 글 쓰는 스타일 때문이기도 합니다. 읽은 분들은 아시겠지만, 문장과 사유가 유연하고 서정적입니다. 교조적인 책이었다면 결코 내지 않았을 거예요. 오랫동안 학계에 몸담았으면서도 현학적 글쓰기를 맵차게 비판하는 노학자가 교수 이전에 한 사람의 지혜로운 어른으로서, 자신의 앎을 나란한 눈높이로 나누려는 글이 마음에 와 닿았습니다. 《조응》이 ‘인류학자’ 팀 잉골드의 대표작은 아닐지 몰라도, 가망서사의 지향에는 꼭 맞는 책이었습니다. 직전에 나온 《라인스》와 《모든 것은 선을 만든다》가 잉골드로 입문하는 ‘정문’이라면 《조응》은 ‘창’이고, 이 책에서 잉골드의 사상은 최종 목적지가 아니라 발걸음을 부추기는 바람에 가깝습니다. 가망서사가 전하고자 했던 것도 사랑과 근심이 생생히 담긴 아름다운 대화였고, 기대보다 더 많은 분들이 대화에 동참해 주셔서 기쁠 따름입니다 🙇♀️ ✒️ “팀 잉골드가 “이끌림과 자율성, 책임감으로 몰두하는” 아마추어 연구자의 말로 쓴 《조응》의 글들에는 이 세계를 사랑하고 삶을 사랑하고 그 사랑의 연원을 알고자 뜨겁게 노력하는 심장 박동이, 지도 교수에게 가져갔다면 빨간 펜이 죽죽 그어졌을 감상과 열망과 근심이 생생히 살아 있다. 글의 호흡을 따라 느리게 사유하면서 자연 현상을 긴 시간과 복합적인 관계의 맥락에서 보게 된다. 나아가 ‘인간은 어쩌다 조응하는 삶을 잃고 홀로 동떨어졌을까’라는 질문을 던지게 된다. 책을 검토하던 와중에 출간하기로 마음을 굳혔던 것은 <눈이 내리는 소리>를 읽으면서였다. 겨울이 긴 핀란드가 기후변화로 점점 따뜻해지는 바람에 눈 내리는 소리를 표현하는 다양한 핀란드어가 사라질까 봐 그 소리를 기록한 예술가 미켈 니에토의 작업에 부쳐 쓴 에세이였다. 눈의 일생을 정갈하게 그린 묘사를 읽는데 ‘이런 진실이면 족하다’ 싶었다. 만물에 주어진 삶이 얼마나 경외할 만한지를 전하려고, 굳이 복잡하고 어려운 개념을 덧붙일 필요가 있을까. 사랑이 낳은 경험은 아름답고, 그 아름다움을 느낄 줄 아는 것이 곧 윤리였다.“
We’re looking forward to sharing the final part of سخن دل Sokhaneh del—language/speech - opening this Saturday, 11 May. On Saturday, we have two lovely activities. We have our bi-weekly meditation session from 11:00 to 11:20 am. All are welcome; no experience or booking is necessary. From 2:00 to 4:00 pm, resident artist @mjavad.akashani will join us in the gallery space for an open studio session onsite. Visitors are invited to join Javad in the gallery to learn how to write a little Farsi using ink markers, focusing on a small selection of words from the artworks. It will be an opportunity to exchange ideas about the words and the poems from where they came while learning about the beauty of Javad’s mother tongue and the calligraphic form. No booking is necessary. But spaces are limited. So first-in-best dressed. ESOTERIC PHILOSOPHY #7, Part Two... For me: Remember that red-orange crayon in the Crayola box? I loved it so much I tried to eat it on occasion. I was the kid who climbed fences, trees and rooftops just because they were there. In my quiet moments I read to my dog and dug frogs out of holes and kept minnows in jars in my bedroom (the parakeet keeping a low profile in my closet disappeared one day when I was at school). My quest, however, was to understand the tasks of religions; I wanted to know what’s True. In fourth grade I asked to be dropped off at school an hour early so I could attend services in the church next door. It was a high Episcopal church and I absorbed all that was possible for an 8-year-old to handle. How would you see my colors lining up? This is how it turned out: Red is the surmounting obstacles action of my Seen Wisdom and Blue is my Unseen Wisdom. Animals, for me, are the first line of relationships into my intuitive self. And Yellow is my carrot-on-a-stick, the scholarship of inner philosophies that draws me along into the exploration of what lies behind the scenes. Is it a coincidence that my primary colors rank exactly in that order. I don’t know. Try it yourself. Consider this an exercise in revealing your hidden energy. Stay with it. ESOTERIC PHILOSOPHY #7, Part One... Last month Janae wrote about color correspondences and now continues with the theme answering the following question: How can these correspondences work in my life? Let’s begin with Red, Blue and Yellow, the colors I introduced last month; it’s what made sense to me first about correspondences. Knowing about how these colors relate to us helps give insight to our emotions. Those who say they are attracted to Red are a lot more independent; they’re a One, very comfortable standing alone. They can be spontaneous and often end up leading the group in some form. Their soul job is to learn Patience and to get to know the inherent energy of their Good. Many people I ask say their favorite is blue. What do we know about Blue? I’ve mentioned it vibrates to the rhythm of Two. It likes to be in a relationship with something, it is the soft Beauty of our consciousness. It is altruistic in many ways and its soul job is to learn to express Gratitude. And someone who favors Yellow is a Three who leans into discipline and organization and its soul job is to close its critical eye and develop Humility. A yellow Three likes to communicate which means it can be faced with the reality that it’s not the only one in the room with an idea. These colors have different jobs within us. We have a color that is the rhythm of our everyday personal Seen Wisdom. We have a second color that is the rhythm at the depth of our UnSeen Wisdom. Our third color is a rhythm of both Seen and Unseen Wisdom in the sense that what we realize is Unseen within us has to be brought to the light of day and be Seen so it can learn to function well. Although we all have a slice of each rhythm within us, it often takes a lot of self-observation to figure out what goes where. You might begin by evaluating your preferences as a child, before things in life became complicated. • From residency to exhibition, it’s been a unique experience to create work in the heart of the Fondation Guido Molinari. Along with with archival research, public dialogue sessions, and an intervention on the facade of the building, the current exhibition includes three new ensembles of photographs. ☛ The exhibition continues until May 19, and includes a Telepoeme by Stéphane Cocke, an eau-forte by John Cage, and the poem Voix Galaxie by Guido Molinari. ✯ Project counsellors include: Numa Amun, François Marceau, and Stella l’amie de Mamie. Exhibition prints were realized at L’imprimerie centre d’artistes, and my thanks to Mathieu Grenier and Robert Saulnier for the installation support and expertise.
