Decodable or leveled reader?? What’s the difference?? Over the year, we here on IG have had some great discussions (check the highlight “decodables”) about assessments and reading resources now that we should be aligning our teaching to the Science of Reading data. I created this free info sheet to distinguish leveled readers & decodables. There’s more info if you’re on my email list too (so make sure to check your inbox, I sent it this week)! Drop a comment for the link to this free printable! ⭐️A bit of a disclaimer...this can be sent home with parents, but make sure you know your families and what will and won’t work for them. We don’t want to discourage families from getting books or reading together. This might be a good thing to share at a parent/teacher conference just to show them the difference and why they may see their child struggling even if they can “read”. We know “reading” is a complex subject that has different steps we build upon. #decodablereaders #levelreaders #scienceofreading #beginningreaders

Here are some things I didn’t do to teach literacy to children: Letter of the week Tracing worksheets Calendar time Teacher directed small groups in place of free-play Take a moment to name the reasons educators and caregivers may teach literacy in some of these ways. What is the goal? If the desired outcome is to develop early literacy skills, then it falls pretty short! Immersive storytelling builds so many literacy skills and explicit alphabet knowledge can also be intentionally woven in. Storytelling provides contexts for letter sounds and words. Children engage and think critically as they predict what happens next Stories are memorable which helps children to recall ideas and words with less effort. Storytelling builds strong oral language skills. “The evidence on the benefits of early literacy development is clear – children who have strong oral language skills, alphabet knowledge, and beginning print awareness are more likely to become proficient readers in early elementary school (National Reading Panel, 2000).” Are you ready to learn more about how to ditch letter of the week, worksheets, and other outdated developmentally inappropriate practices in your learning environment? Did you know that sentence segmenting helps students with higher-level reading and writing skills?! At a basic level, it helps us know where to put spaces in our sentences. Imagine trying to write a sentence if you couldn’t tell where one word ended and the others began. At a deeper level, sentence segmenting requires a great deal of working memory. In order to support students’ ability to hold onto sentences in memory, it is important to teach them to break down sentences. When we break sentences down, we want to break them into… a subject (who/what), a predicate (did what), and an adverbial phrase (why, when, where, or how). This simple strategy will help… ✅ improve short-term working memory ✅ understand sentence structure ✅ build listening & reading comprehension ✅ improve written sentence structure When students can hold onto the key information in a sentence, it helps them understand it. Students need to be able to segment sentences for both writing AND comprehension. Members of our 5CCL Activity Libary will get access to these June Monthly PA cards when they drop on June 1st! Comment "5CCL" if you'd like us to send you more information about the Activity Library. #teachersofinstagram #teachersfollowteachers #teachersofig #education #teacherfriends #igteachers #teachergram #readingspecialist #iteachtoo #weareteachers #iteachreading #readingteacher#speechtherapy #slpeeps #schoolslp #speechies #speechpathology #speechlanguagepathology #slp #slplife #specialeducation #spedteacher #instaslp #teachers #iteach #specialeducationteacher #speechpath #spedtribe #scienceofreading #SOR

📝 Top tips to prevent the summer reading slide… Countless research has shown that without regular reading practice, children struggle to maintain their reading speed and accuracy (Alexander, Entwisle, & Olson, 2007), leading to a loss in reading fluency and comprehension, widening attainment gaps, and vocabulary regression. With the summer rapidly approaching, it’s vital to ensure that students continue to read for pleasure throughout the school holidays - but how? Take a look through the gallery for our tips, and share your strategies below! ☀️ #phonicsreading #scienceofreading #teachingresource #sor

In our latest blog post from SEAL Executive Director Anya Hurwitz, she shared that as conversations about the "reading crisis" continue, it's important to consider the broader implications. While the "Science of Reading" aims to improve literacy by focusing on foundational skills, this approach can be too narrow, especially for multilingual learners. We need comprehensive literacy strategies that integrate language development, curiosity, and critical thinking. A holistic approach nurtures not just reading skills but also joyful learning and creativity. Let's support policies that embrace diverse, meaningful learning experiences, preparing our students for a multilingual world. 📚 Read more with the link in our bio >> #Education #Literacy #ScienceOfReading #MultilingualEducation #BilingualEducation

In Season 4 (2021-2022), we did an episode about the Ladder, when it evolved from the Reading Ladder to the Ladder of Reading and Writing. In that episode, we went through each section of the ladder, its precise wording, and so on. Then later in the season, we chatted with Nancy Young about differentiation, where she shared her thoughts about meeting the variety of students' needs within the ladder. in 2023, as Jan Hasbrouck and Nancy Young worked on their book Climbing the Ladder of Reading and Writing, the infographic was revised yet again. We appreciate Nancy explaining the revisions in our most recent podcast episode. Here is the summary of that part of our discussion: 🪜adjusted coloring of the sections, referred to as contiguous distribution 🪜 adjusted wording: added the word implicit learning by green section 🪜added some spelling/writing need to dark green section 🪜Purple arrow now has differentiation as the first word 🪜adjusted wording by dark green from enrichment to acceleration 🪜 tightened up wording on blue and purple arrows Visit Nancy's website (link is in our show notes) to print the ladder and read about each section, the terms defined ,and references. Comment SHOW NOTES if you'd like the link to that and other referenced resources form the episode.

How do we ensure HIGH IMPACT instruction that will lead to incredible student outcomes? We need more than one thing! Research shows that, in order to impact students, we need more than just PD, more than just curriculum, more than just a new routine -- we need all of these ingredients (for example Ehri & Flugman, 2018; Piper et al., 2018; Westall & Cunningham, preprint). This school year Blankner K8 became an RCF Model School as they implemented the Orton-Gillingham approach in all K-2 classrooms. They are especially excited by how the Kindergarten team embraced the evidence-based, multisensory method to support early literacy development, ensuring every child has a solid foundation for reading and writing success. The team planned interactive and multisensory activities during their summer planning days, developing the schedule for their routines to make sure they implemented all the parts of the OG approach. Throughout the school year, time was devoted during each weekly PLC to review the routines for phonemic awareness, decoding skills, and language comprehension. Additionally, the team used progress monitoring data to form small groups based on the skills and concepts related to the Orton-Gillingham approach to better address specific needs. Because of the diligence and sustained efforts of the Kindergarten team using the Orton-Gillingham approach in their literacy blocks, Blankner’s youngest learners are more confident and on the path to become proficient readers. #ScienceOfReading #untileverychildcanread #LiteracyForAll

📱The long o sound can be represented by 5 different spelling patterns: 🍎 O-E (Vowel-Consonant-E) Pattern (most common long o pattern) - Examples: bone, home, note, phone Explain that the “E” at the end of the word is silent and makes the “O” say its name. You can use a fun phrase like “magic E” to illustrate how the E changes the sound of the O. 🍎 Just O - Examples: go, pony, piano, bonus In open syllables, the long “o” sound is represented by just the letter “o” itself. Open syllables are syllables that end with a vowel. The vowel is “open,” meaning it is not followed by a consonant, and it often says its long sound. For the letter “o,” this means it will sound like the letter name “O.” 🍎 OA Pattern Examples: boat, coat, road, soap Usually appears at the beginning or middle of a one syllable word. 🍎 OW Pattern Examples: grow, snow, window, pillow Usually appears at the end of a one or less commonly two syllable word. Note that the OW pattern can make different sounds (like in “cow” or “now” for the /ou/ sound). For the long “o” sound, create a word list of common OW words and practice them to reinforce the correct pronunciation. 🍎 OE Pattern Examples: toe, foe, doe Usually at the end of words This is a are long o spelling. I teach it in a group since there are so few words following this pattern. 📌Save this for your next phonics lesson. ❤️ Share with any fellow teachers who will find it helpful! ✏️Comment “Long O” for the poster to display in your learning space. #readingisfun #phonicsisfun #literacycoaching #literacyinstruction #earlyyearsliteracy #scienceofreading #thereadingmentor #structuredliteracy #phonics #phonologicalawareness #earlyyearsliteracyskills #teachersofinstagram #teachyourkidstoread #readingfoundations #structuredliteracy #phonicsrules #intervention #readingintervention #longospellings #soellingpatterns #spellingposter #phonicsposter

Earlier this semester, we released a whole new look and feel to the enCORE curriculum experience. The new layout made enCORE simpler and more intuitive to use – everything you need to teach a lesson in one place! Teachers are loving it! “I want to thank TeachTown for listening to teachers about the navigation of the system. It has been a tremendous help to have everything in one tab.” “It feels like you were in my head when you changed it. Everything I wanted is now there!” We know it can take a while to get used to changes, so teachers have been able to toggle back and forth between the legacy version of the curriculum tab and the new experience throughout this spring semester. After June 30, all enCORE users will be migrated over to the new curriculum experience. Check out the blog at the link in bio to learn more. Getting kids engaged in phonological awareness starts with the basics. Just by saying a simple word and having students repeat it back, we can break down sounds in a way that tunes their ears. The key is in paying attention to how we emphasize and articulate those beginning, middle, and ending sounds. Getting kids engaged in phonological awareness starts with the basics. Just by saying a simple word and having students repeat it back, we can break down sounds in a way that tunes their ears. The key is in paying attention to how we emphasize and articulate those beginning, middle, and ending sounds. Have you had a chance to read Fluency: Bridge between decoding and reading comprehension? This article by John Pikulski and David Chard explains the importance of reading fluency in bridging the gap between decoding skills and reading comprehension. It emphasizes that while decoding is essential, fluency is what plays a crucial role in comprehension. When students have adequate fluency, they can read the text for meaning rather than word by word. Pikulski and Chard highlight interventions and strategies to enhance fluency. They propose that fluency acts as a connector between decoding and comprehension, which improves the overall reading experience for readers. They also dive into ways to incorporate fluency-building activities into your daily instruction. I 100 % recommend taking a few minutes to read this today! Before building a strong "house of learning", work on the foundations! Our ability to learn comes down to how well we can: - pay attention - remember the information we've learnt - understand and communicate - enjoy reading - be open to the challenge of learning a new skill Would you like to speak with learning coach who understands these five foundational areas?
