سخن دل Sokhaneh del – language/speech of the heart community painting 2024 by @inbal___nissim The work was commenced as part of a community painting action with our audiences here at correspondences in April. Guests gathered to work with Inbal in a gesture of collective mark-making using a single piece of fabric and a selection of inks sourced and made by her. In the weeks after the session, Inbal worked on the painting, exploring and expanding upon the tender marks that her audience made with her. The beautiful painting that hangs in the window is the culmination of that search. On display in our window until 2 June. We’re looking forward to sharing the final part of سخن دل Sokhaneh del—language/speech - opening this Saturday, 11 May. On Saturday, we have two lovely activities. We have our bi-weekly meditation session from 11:00 to 11:20 am. All are welcome; no experience or booking is necessary. From 2:00 to 4:00 pm, resident artist @mjavad.akashani will join us in the gallery space for an open studio session onsite. Visitors are invited to join Javad in the gallery to learn how to write a little Farsi using ink markers, focusing on a small selection of words from the artworks. It will be an opportunity to exchange ideas about the words and the poems from where they came while learning about the beauty of Javad’s mother tongue and the calligraphic form. No booking is necessary. But spaces are limited. So first-in-best dressed. Using voice for the breath and community - join us for group singing with Aarti Jadu ✨ Together with Aarti, we invite you to join us at CORRESPONDENCES for deep listening and community singing. Over the course of the residency, Aarti will lead three group singing workshops on three Thursday evenings at @correspondencesstudio. — Thursday, 21 March — Thursday, 11 April — Thursday, 23 May. Award-winning writer Merlinda Bobis grew up in Albay, Philippines, at the foot of an active volcano and now lives in Ngunnawal Country (Canberra), Australia. Novelist, poet, short story writer, dramatist and performer, she dreams up stories across different geographies and languages: English, Filipino and Bikol. | | ——— Last Sunday, it was our honour to have Merlinda with us for our latest 'Writer In Conversation' event. It was an inspiring conversation about birds, kindness, the Filipino idea of 'kapwa' and the vitality of a worldview that values interconnectedness between humans and more-than-humans; the uncanny (how to notice, cultivate and embrace it in creative practice and everyday life); the deep connection and kinship that exists between women and nature; and much more. Her thought-provoking book, 'The Kindness of Birds, ' was the foundation. One of our most important conversational threads was about the urgency of achieving a sense of balance in contemporary storytelling - storytelling that speaks to human frailty and cruelty and our capacity for deep kindness, compassion, and love. | | ——— Merlinda also shared two of her beautiful songs - 'Owl Unbroken', which grew out of The Kindness of Birds, and 'Beloved Elder Trees', inspired by her more recent research into the wondrous 'da'o' trees found in her hometown, also known as Pacific walnut oaks - the subject of her next book! ✨ We also shared some lovely Sapin-Sapin cake - thank you @kariton.sorbetes Thank you, dear Merlinda, from one volcano woman to another and from all of us at correspondences - our internal team and guests alike - for your deep insight and radiating kindness. She was born and trained in China, and studied western musicology in the UK before emigrating to Australia. Her work is an important part of a significant movement of Chinese musicians redefining and reinvigorating their musical tradition on the global stage. This work will be showing at the lovely Counihan Gallery in the Merri-bek Summer Exhibition. The opening celebration is Saturday 2-4, and I'm very excited to see the amazing artists and work in this show. One of the highlights of MONA for me is passing the zinc shmelter on the ferry. I started looking for ways to paint this way back in 2019. It's always seemed too big for one image, but I'm not close enough to get the details and really focus... so I settled on panels. Over the years, I've ruined, painted over, and flipped upside down so many versions of each page, pushing between ochre and blue, looking for things that I don't know about and making mistakes. I haven't been able to get my hands on the lovely sommerst black paper in a while, so the bottom right has to use the back of a still life nobody needed. I am participating in a special group exhibition, See What We See On at Coburg Library over the month of August Opening Wednesday 9 August 6-8 An exhibition of inspirational artworks by a vibrant group of 7 artists who meet for 4 h hours every week. Some living with disability. All passionate about art, sharing their knowledge and skills and having fun together. Over the past 2 months we have been working together to create several collections of artworks. We have each facilitated a creative session; leading and designing the process, pulling together the materials, then helping install the exhibition. This experience has been transformative; a gateway to learning about new materials and processes. Such fun!
