This is the second poem I've written for The Wee Sparrow Poetry Press's (TWSPP) current ekphrastic challenge ("Plastic Mero" by Bordalo II); it's a sculpture from plastic ocean debris hauled in around Madeira Island, Portugal). Like all others, I’m an artist. But alone, I too struggle. When the blank, of that white canvas, mocked you, how did you respond? When the empty page, equated your being with failure, and only laughed at your name, how did you once again find the faith? When the muses, abandoned you, extracting all their beauties, leaving you flavorless and demoralized, how did you, pick up the brush once more? Like all others, I’m an artist. But alone, I too struggle. Maybe, those questions posed, prove to be my hamartia? No, that’s it, isn’t it? Yes, it’s true, I need no intervention, of man nor divine, isn’t it? Like all others, I’m an artist. But of course, I too, must struggle. Creation requires destruction, so let me face, failure and myself! Let me stare, into this barren void, and face destruction! #ekphrastic poetry is poetry written in response to a piece of art. “Sexy Roman” on page 106 of “Spellbook of Ordinary Mistakes” from @pinktreespress , is an example of #ekphrasis .The poem is written in response to the sculpture pictured here. The sculpture also makes a subtle appearance on the cover of the book, thanks to @lindawulkanart (who designs most of the covers for #pinktreespress ) She read the poems and chose ideas and symbols that represent the mood and content of the book. There in the cover image, we see the sculpture forming in the clouds of the waterfall pouring from the inverted green eye 👁️ above the destroyed #tappanzeebridge . What I love about the cover, is that it asks you to look closer, which is the function of poetry. Poetry invites you to explore and make sense (or not!) of the language presented deliberately. The violence experienced by Indigenous women, girls, and gender diverse people in North America is a tragedy. May 5 is the National Day for Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit People (MMIWG2S), also known as Red Dress Day. On this day, we honor the lives of missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls and gender diverse people and offer support to grieving families in the hope of community healing. This semester I had the privilege of translating “When Her Body is a Battleground” by @kblaeser8 into Arabic. This profound and moving poem addresses the violence Indigenous women continue to face, the agencies and systems that have let them down, and the ways grief can be viewed as extravagance for communities grappling with continuous loss. The Reverse Ekphrasis Art Show gave artists the opportunity to “translate” this beautiful poem into visual works of art. This is a practice write for The Wee Sparrow's most recent ekphrastic challenge (see prompt art at the end). "Itajara" is the Atlantic goliath grouper, one of the largest species of bony fish.
