Fortunately the port tasted fine, lots of well rounded fruit, rich red berries with a hint of dryness. Good balance of alcohol and tannins. Very drinkable. In June 2021 Vintage Wine & Port presented a special online tasting event with Oscar Quevedo featuring six Quevedo Colheita Single Harvest Tawny Ports. I purchased the pack late and failed, until now, to get around to do the tasting with the YouTube video. Very interesting and great to taste the selection, especially the 1994 and the 1974. 2004 - medium brown colour, figs, walnuts and almonds. Strawberry and raspberry notes. A burst of flavour with a short finish. 2000 - darker in colour. Less aroma. Black cherries, milder in flavour. Great ageing potential. Longer finish and fruitier than the 2004. 1996 - colour is between 2000 and 2004. Fruity and nutty, more character. Slight acidity, less tannins, hints of plums. Longer finish. 1994 - iconic year, wonderful balance of acidity, tannins. Flavours are more concentrated, thick and complex. Lots going on, great finish, stands out. 1992 - lighter amber brown, similar in colour to the 2004. Subtle and elegant. Nutty, almond, tea. Less tannins and thinner than the 1994. Similar to the 1996, but the maturity shows. 1974 - landmark year for Portugal. Amber in colour, red has gone. Deep nuttiness and caramel. Fruitiness has gone. Graham’s Late Bottled Vintages are easily available these days, but I hadn’t had an opportunity to try an older one yet. This 1981 has a lovely full colour, with a deep redness. Graham’s LBVs tend to be on the dry side and this port is certainly a dry port, but with beautiful sweet undertones of caramel and brown sugar. Nice balance of fruit and alcohol. A revolution whose signal to mobilise across the country was given by the playing of the song “Grândola, Vila Morena”, via public radio. Bottled at £57.7% again non chill filtered and no added colour too, again a big fruity bomb but with rich dried fruits too. Last week, our Head of Marketing and resident Master of Wine student @jesslambwrites joined a group of fellow students on a study trip to the beautiful Douro Valley, the home of Port wine and undeniably one of the most gorgeous wine regions on earth. No fine wine collection is complete without a generous Port section - this historic fortified wine is not only rich in history but also in depth, flavour, and sheer deliciousness. Thanks to the generosity of hosts @fladgatepartnership, @symingtonfamilyestates and @quintadonoval_official, Jess explored the incredible diversity of this category and tasted some of the best Port wines that the Douro has to offer, from bright, buoyant Ruby to the nutty, oxidative delight that is aged Tawny (a sneak preview of a soon-to-be-released 50 Year Old Tawny from the kind people of @grahams_port was a masterclass in intensity and concentration). An 18-Port line up at 10am on a Monday morning is a suitably majestic way to start the week. Highlights of the trip included @taylorsportwine Vintage 1977 - older than most of those assembled around the table - and a superlative Nacional 2003, which displayed all the fabulous depth and complexity that you would expect from one of Port's most famous bottlings. @dows_port Fine Ruby Porto 🍷🍇✨ Port is a sweet, fortified wine from Oporto, Portugal. But why are most of the larger Port houses English in name? Port has a long history. A couple 100 years ago, when the English lost almost all access to French wines, the English turned to Portugal to buy their wine, since England wasn’t yet a wine producing region. However, the wine would spoil on the long boat trip over, so they started dumping in a neutral grape spirit. This prevented spoilage, and made the wine stronger 💪🏻 the English loved it, so they kept making the wine this way. Now they dump in the spirit during fermentation, killing the yeast, leaving a ton of residual sugar. So now port is sweet and strong, just like you, boo 😘 This Ruby Port is the perfect dessert wine: Balanced and fruit-forward with a full, luxurious mouthfeel, served slightly chilled (only about 3oz since it’s so strong and sweet) and pair with any chocolate dessert. It’s not often I find a place to buy Bulas Port, though I regularly see it for sell on restaurants. Therefore, I couldn’t resist buying a bottle of their Ruby Reserve when I saw a bottle in The Cheese Board in Sidmouth (a great cheese shop with a very good selection), The port has a subtle flavour, with lots of floral notes.
