A couple of more bottles I tried while in Cluj. When @florin.ilioiu and I got to the hotel and met with our friend @mariusveremia, Marius pulled out a couple of really good bottles. Warm up, drinking something before we go out drinking, you know. The first was from Elixir Distillers’ The Single Malts of Scotland range. I’ve posted another bottle from them a couple of months ago, a Laphroaig. This one’s a Caol Ila, aged 12 - dare I say, this is what a Caol Ila 12 should be like. 😁 Really good stuff. Last call on my #Australianwhisky quest, was a few final tasters of #australiansinglemalt at duty free in #Brisbane airport. I tried the @lawrennydistilling Lawrenny 'Tarkine' #Tasmanian #singlemalt, smoked with Huon Pine, matured in ex-port and ex-sherry casks (50%) - very tasty. Then Melbourne's @starwardwhisky 'Two-Fold' Wheat and Single Malt whisky, with a spiffy new label (?), married & matured in Australian red wine barrels (40%). I was about to head out and was offered a duo of @larkdistillery drams - the #larkwhisky ‘Classic Cask’, aged in ex-sherry & port casks (43%), and 'Tasmanian Peated’, unusually post-malt smoked with Tasmanian Central Highlands peat - their barley arrives at the distillery already malted, so apparently they have a process of peat-smoking that already malted barley (46%). Nice! What a fabulous couple of weeks exploring the world of Australian whisky…… not to mention seeing old friends & relatives, and surfing world class point breaks. All four expressions were bottled in December 2022, one of which; the Imperial Distillery is no longer in operation. 𝘍𝘪𝘴𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨, from the Royal Brackla Distillery in the Highlands, was matured in a single hogshead for 11 years. 𝘍𝘢𝘭𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘳𝘺, from the Caol Ila Distillery on the island of Islay, was matured in a single hogshead for 14 years. 𝘚𝘩𝘰𝘰𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 - the most limited of the range with only 191 numbered bottles available - this whisky is made in the Imperial Distillery in Speyside and matured in a single barrel for 26 years. The distilleries of Campbeltown!! 🥃 Glen Scotia was founded in 1832 as Scotia Distillery, while Springbank was established in 1828 on the site of Archibald Mitchell’s illicit still. Aaaand I threw in a couple pics of the impressive whisky bar at the Ardshiel Hotel, built in 1877! 🤩🤩 Which do I prefer? I loved the historic building and tasting room at Glen Scotia but Springbank’s Washback Bar is definitely more set up for visitors. Both worth a visit if you’re in town!!
