An absolute must do event during the Spirit of Speyside is visiting Tamdhu Distillery. I've been here in previous years but always enjoy coming back for a tour. The team are amazing, I can't remember ever having laughed so much and having such fun on a tour anywhere! That's for another upcoming post though! It was also the perfect opportunity to sample and treat myself to this year’s Dalbeallie VII festival release 😇 As with all Tamdhu releases it's a real sherry monster and for that I love it! We had Stephen from @singlemaltdreams visiting us at NMWL Bergen a few days ago. This is Norway’s first (and only) independent bottler. It was a fantastic lineup, starting out with a 25yo 1995 Ben Nevis. These are often as good as many of the more famous ‘96’s but there is just less of them about. A lovely Glentauchers 25yo followed it with more soft fruits rather than the tropical ones in the BN. Then a first for me, a Westland whiskey. This is a US single malt, and had an interesting balance between the malt (they used 5 types in this cask) and cask. A 13yo Teaninich followed, which was a good example of a sherry finish adding a bit of flavor but not overdoing it. We moved onto a 14yo Blair Athol finished in a Laphroaig quarter cask and finished with a lovely sweet peated Ardmore. I have to say, I think the label designs are beautiful too. Revisiting the Teaninich 14 year old A.D. Rattray 58,1%. About three years ago I went down a Teaninich rabbit hole and thoroughly enjoyed doing so. Lately I haven’t really bought anything from that distillery, except a SMWS bottling that really doesn’t resemble what I have come to associate with Teaninich. I started wondering how I’d get along with those bottles now, so I went into my saved 20cl stash and dug out this A.D. Rattray bottling. Nose: Oh, there is that fruity creamy vanilla note. Yeah, I’ve missed this. Yellow apples, citrus and pears and gingery cask spice. A nice bourbon oak with the distillate shining through. Palate: Oak, creamy vanilla and orchard fruits on the arrival. Great and powerful bourbon oak. Spice builds on the development. The finish is cask forward, and a hint of a green grassy apple note appears. Consulting my old notes I see that I preferred the other three bourbon oak matured Teaninichs I had bought at the time, luckily I have samples of those saved as well, because if they really are better than this I’m in for a real treat.
