Where I’m Grading Papers and Not Writing Today: elementary school carpool line. Overall, this setup could be worse. The ambient noise isn’t bad, actually, with the car windows down. Occasional car revving, snippets of adorable conversations from kids walking past, and some windows-down thumping bass. The chair is pre-positioned to fit since it’s my driving chair. Refreshments are lacking - just my water bottle and whatever stale granola bars I have in my bag. [Pages from my notebook] I write daily. Pour myself onto the page. I try to appease my senses, giving longevity to certain looks, emotions, feelings, thoughts. Without my intimate writing I lack air. The lungs do not fill enough. The cells do not oxygenate enough. Nobody reads what I write there. Not even me. From inner slavery comes the freedom of existence per se. Without pretentiousness. No ambitions. No functionalities. My words sail at the rhythm of feeling, without premeditation. They accumulate in their own geography, one that only recognises itself and only serves itself. Just like here, on this instagram page that I feed with what I am and how I see what surrounds me. A space where I refuse planning, artistic filters, chain of Feeds and stories worked to exhaustion. I do not seek influence in others. Rather, I seek to reveal myself. To be me, spontaneous. True to what I am: an old soul, assuming fragility, needing to be and to become. Full of flaws. In a word: human. I am what this page is, just like the pages of my notebook: an amalgamation of feeling, being, needing, observing, acknowledging and creating. I need this demystification of perfection. Something like the japanese wabi sabi. As I have written several times: I need to be who I am, not what I could be. Aiming to let the poem within be while seeking the existential poem in the Word and in the Other. I write daily in my notebook. I pour myself on the page. Whether through words. Be it through images. I have a confession to make. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It has recently come to my attention that my bright and airy persona on Instagram doesn't quite match the dark and complex topics I explore in my fiction writing. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Here's the thing. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I have two passions in life. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 1.) I love encouraging others. Like, LOVE it. It brings me so much joy to speak kindness into another person's life, and Instagram is my daily opportunity to practice that. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 2.) I live for deep conversations about tough topics. It is my other greatest joy to provide a safe space for someone to share what they have been too afraid to say aloud. To bring shame, fear, or confusion into the open to be seen, listened to, and understood. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Things often don't seem as scary when they are in the light and we are no longer alone. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ In my fiction writing, many of the characters deal with abuse, addiction, loss, and trauma, which causes them to ask deep questions as they process their grief. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Why do terrible things happen to innocent people? Why do people die? Is there a God? If so, is he good? Does he care? Is this life worth living? If so, for what purpose? Who gets to decide justice? Are all people who make hurtful choices bad? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It is my hope that as people read these stories, they recognize many of the same questions they've been asking themselves. Another busy day, another day away from my keyboard. Figures that when I finally get buckled down to finish this book, I also have 37,000 appointments and what have you keeping me from actually writing. Today I have to take my kid in to his regular doctor appointment. As a writer I often struggle with negative thinking and worry my drafts aren’t good enough. It’s tempting to quit and so easy to get stuck in cycles of negative thinking. Part of overcoming is replacing those negative thoughts with positive ones. So I’m thinking of doing #campnanowrimo in April. I have been doing no #writing lately. And I know people say that, but I’ve literally done zero, and I’m struggling to remember when I sat down and wrote anything creative in recent months.
