These are the different stages of 'Melody of Strength'. It is a really interesting process as it feels kind of backwards. I started by painting bright colours first and then going over that with a dark transparent glaze and then subtract the glaze from the areas I wanted the brighter colours to show through and then finish up with opaque (and unsurprisingly my favourite) thick paints. The thing I loved the most about this technique was the way that subtracting the sky felt so intuitive. I love sampling days! 🕯️🕯️🕯️ I burn my newest concoctions in different rooms to get a fresh feel for each blend. I take notes on what’s working, what to adjust/add, pour another batch with my noted changes and test again. It’s the most time consuming part of the process, but probably my favorite part. 🙌🏼🙌🏼 My newest blend took 6 months to perfect and I’m LOVING it, (it was well worth the wait!) 🌊Cascadia 🌊 This complex, mineral rich blend combines the softness of elemi and cardamom, with crisp orange peel and sea salt, resting on an aquatic base of palm and light musk. Elemi resin, derived from the Canarium luzonicum tree, exudes a citrusy, pine-like aroma with hints of lemon and incense. Cardamom releases a spicy warmth, evoking a rich earthiness. . Working abstractly, I am often asked if I have a set idea or if I just plunge in. It’s a bit of both. The wax sets the foundation of texture, depth and translucency. After a first wash of oil color, I begin looking. Then I draw what I see emerging from the piece. Then the push, pull, add and remove wrestling match begins to coax out the composition with one layer of color at a time. Duvet (2024) 127 x 87cm Acrylic and oil on cotton This painting is painted on a cut and stretched duvet cover. I often incorporate domestic linen into the painting surface, which is sometimes sewn together to create the desired base. It started as a thrifty way to create a smooth ‘canvas’ base and I also like how soft the fabric is, softened and smoothed by years of human contact and washing. As time has gone, I realised It’s important for me that there is human presence within the work - the painting surface has been slept on or has covered a person for warmth and comfort. I remember seeing the Gee Bend quilts at the Turner Contemporary in the 2020 exhibition ‘We will walk - Art and Resistance in the American South’. I found them particularly moving. Some had stains on them - shrouds of human presence. I like sewing and I like piecing together and recycling discarded fabrics. Well, I’m pretty pleased with this painting. In fact I’d go so far as to say I LOVE it!!! 💖💖💖 I think it is finished, although I may add a tiny touch of gold or silver to those ‘bubbles’? 🫧🫧🫧 The addition of light Yellow and Cerulean Blue to my limited palette of Cadmium Red, Yellow Ochre, Black and Titanium White made a huge difference. It meant I could make a delicious orange and some interesting green tones. I really like the orangey oval shape near the top on the right hand side, with the ‘dripping’ black and white shape above it. Here I added small scribbles in Vermilion and Periwinkle Blue Neocolour II wax pastels. Used these gorgeous crayons for detail in a few other areas too. Just treated myself to a box of 30 delicious colours…love them! I also enjoyed drawing lines and scribbles with a soft carbon pencil. 🖍️✏️ I’m thinking ‘Waterline’ or ‘Submerged’ for a title, but I’d welcome any ideas you may have. 🥰 My daughter said it reminded her of diving in Cornwall and I’m definitely seeing a watery mood. I really wanted to make sure I knew what I was getting into before starting to write, since completing a full length novel is a huge time commitment. Between studying for back-to-back board exams, working on residency applications, travelling and completing electives, it suffices to say that I have not been eating the best over the last few months. All this time, I had managed to push all the weight-gain thoughts out of my mind, because ignorance is bliss, right? Why is the thought of putting on weight so fear inducing? I was listening to an episode of Glennan Doyle’s podcast, We Can Do Hard Things, where she talks about how our world’s impossible beauty standards have caged women. Women are constantly inundated with what beauty should like. It affects our self talk, our thoughts and body image, our relationship with ourselves and others. We are raised in a society where all things natural are generally thought to be repulsive: Body hair? (yuck). Wrinkles? (inject that ASAP). Tummy rolls? (how could you let yourself go). Ah, the knockout blow of “letting yourself go”. Glennan discusses this concept in the same episode. As if the worst thing a woman could possibly do is not live up to the preordained beauty standard! These beauty ideals are etched so deeply that it takes conscious effort and discomfort to deprogram them. I may have gained some weight over the last few months, but I have also gained such incredible insight and experiences in the same amount of time. I have felt genuinely proud of myself, gratified and fulfilled in the work I was doing. I felt mentally strong. And emotionally well. WIP… The progression of a painting. The new series has been giving me lots to think about. A real push and pull. But I think I’m getting there now. The Northern part of the Oregon coast is a very special edge of the world where the mouth of the mighty Columbia River meets the Pacific Ocean. It is, as indicated on the state’s license plate the “Pacific Wonderland” and a place that, since moving here from the dense urbanity of Jersey City, NJ so long ago, I have been in total awe of.
