Imagine, from a young age of having to constantly adapt and understand your sibling’s needs first. Having to be their advocate and supporter, before forming one’s own identity. Learning to balance one's own needs with demands of caring for someone else. These are the moments that constantly hold a glass child. Glass child isn’t a medical condition or diagnosis. It’s a colloquial term often used to describe the challenges and unique strengths of the siblings of children with chronic illnesses or disabilities. SWIPE to get an overview of the topic.🌻 READ MORE about this in our blog post by our research team member Ms. Sumedha on LinkedIn. InnerAlly is all about helping you create a soothing and supportive inner voice so you can thrive in life. It turns out that some folks have a really critical and even cruel innervoice. “As Kate Swenson, the blogger behind @findingcoopersvoice , once said: “If you ever wonder how to treat a person with autism, look to the sibling.” Siblings of autistic children are immersed in diversity and inclusion training all day every day, and often understand their siblings better than their parents.” @todayparents I’ll never get tired seeing them together. I’ll never get tired of singing Bella’s praises. There’s a lot of questionable things #GenZ does, but with teenagers like Bella, man, do I have faith 🤍 When I count my blessings, I count Bella twice. 📸: @ccstudiosmia * @_blanquitaaaa from @ccstudiosmia did a photo shoot for families with autistic children and I am so grateful. Reflection: I have asked for help for so long, so now I ask for time so I can help myself. I have experienced lifelong, chronic invalidation, my needs being less important than anyone else in my family system, including a cat, which writing it down feels so sad and disheartening. I’ve asked all my life for help and it’s always been met as an inconvenience. I’ve had to search within myself to find that support that was never afforded to me, but even this is too much and I’ve been met with invalidation in the form of impatience. I have been informed that I am “making things awkward”, my “attitude is disappointing”, and “it’s such a shame that you don’t love your family”. Welcome to the dysfunctional narcissistic family system. I am so fortunate to have some excellent people around me who give their time to listen and can hear that little child in me that is just screaming for someone to recognise their experiences. Healing is so hard and no one ever wants to have to cut themselves off from their family, it’s the equivalent of tearing off an arm to save yourself but somehow you are still selfish because look at the mess your blood is making, this will be hard to clean up and explain away. #NPD #narcissticabuse #flyingmonkeys #enabler #dysfunctionalfamily #familysystems #glasschild #invisiblechild #healing #nocontact #lowcontact #time #impatience #emotionalneglect #manipulation #selfcare #appearanceiseverything

Siblings are like forever friends who share DNA, may or may not have to share a bedroom and argue half the time 👯 The same is true for those who have a sibling with a disability, except they will have more unique challenges, expectations and experiences, often leading to "Glass Child Syndrome", a term used to describe children who seem “invisible” when put next to a sibling with special needs. That's why ErinoakKids offers Sibshops — a monthly workshop just for kids who have a sibling with a disability attending ErinoakKids. ➡️ To learn more about Sibshops and for helpful resources, tap our link in bio or visit www.erinoakkids.ca/sibshops ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ #ErinoakKids #Siblings #WorldSiblingsDay #SiblingDay #NationalSiblingDay #KidsWithDisabilities #Disabilities #Brother #Sister #Family #SocialWork #GlassChild #GlassChildSyndrome

Being brother and sister means always being there for each other. Here’s a strong suggestion, take your kids on trips one or two at a time. You get more individualized time with them, there’s much less stress, you can be more flexible to their individual needs (vertigo and migraines flaring up? Hotel nap in the middle of the day it is). If you take two together it strengthens their relationship. Last night going to see the sunset, brother had some vertigo so he held onto sister to walk down the trail. I snapped this photo and it’s one of my very favorites now of the two of them. We have had zero agenda on this trip. We have done what they wanted, when they wanted and have been super flexible to meet needs and wants. It’s been really great to let them choose. We’ve had some really good laughs as well as deeper, important talks. These two are amazing! #siblinglove #siblingrelationship #siblings #glasschild #familylove

When I was 17, I realized I might have complex needs, too. I was struggling with a lot, and I needed help. I didn't tell anyone for months. I was so worried. "How selfish," I thought my parents and teachers would say. "Don't you realize your sibling has it way worse than you do?" This mindset, I've learned, is actually harmful, not just to me, but to my sibling. Nobody wants to be pitied. I imagine that there might be people who look at me and could say, "Wow, she has it way worse than I do!" I thought about how it would make me feel if someone said that about me. It would make me feel so icky. So I decided not to let the same words stand for my sibling. I eventually reached out for help and got rediagnosed with sensory processing disorder and dyspraxia. I had technically been diagnosed when I was three, but getting rediagnosed helped me understand what I needed to change in my life and that this wasn't going to go away with time. I'm not growing out of it; it's here to stay. It helped me accept it, and it made occupational therapy more accessible. I eventually got occupational therapy and now my life is easier to manage. I also learned how to self-accommodate in my own life so I can stay feeling good. As I did so, a surprising thing happened: my relationship with my sibling got better and better. I started to get curious about his disabilities and learned more about them, too. I started Adaptive Sib Support. I started another project I'm excited to talk about and may reveal soon. Accepting my own complex needs changed my life for the better 🌱 I am a complex adaptive sib, and these days, I'm proud to be one 💗

3/31/2024, 5:43:18 PM

I don't like the term "special needs." I never have. I was always a little confused why people didn't just come out and say what they meant. When I started looking at what the disability community was saying online, I began to realize that the preferred term is often "disabled," not a euphemism for disabled. I often saw "disabled is not a bad word." I agree, it's not. I hope you like the term I have come up with. I think it encompasses the type of siblings I'm talking about in a way that brings every type together in one phrase. I really hope that comes across 🤞🏼 Complex adaptive sibs, let me know your thoughts in the comments 💭

Sea glass… I think it’s so beautiful, I have some jewelry made from it. Sea glass is made from glass dumped in the ocean and are polished and refined by sand and the waves and currents of oceans. This beautiful glass has seen its share of riding the waves, being refined and polished over years and years. It’s had abrasive sand polishing and shining it for a long time. Beautiful people are much the same. They ride the waves of struggle and pain and are polished and refined and turned into someone incredibly beautiful. Glass children have struggle and challenge, they are refined and polished by the abrasive sand particles of life. They can come out of it beautiful and brave and compassionate and courageous. However instead of letting our kids ride the storms and waves alone, let’s join them on their journey and support and love them along the way. #seaglass #seaglasslove #glasschild #stainedglass #fightlikeamother #fightlikeamotherpodcast

This is my husband, isn’t he adorable? Baby David was born 16 months after an older brother who had a severe congenital heart defect. His brother required ongoing, intense medical care and attention from his parents and it was vital to his well being that he got all of that care and attention. David also was the 4th child in 5 years. His parents are amazing and loving AND they were overwhelmed and exhausted I am sure. My husband was a glass child. Acknowledging this doesn’t discount his amazing parents, his story also deserved to be told. I did this podcast yes to bring awareness, but also to honor my amazing husband. When asked what advice he would give you, here is what he said: •Show up! Be excited about being there for them. •Be careful of assigning a role not of their choosing in your family like caretaker, like the dependable one, like the righteous one, the companion, the buddy. •Don’t take them for granted. See them, don’t see through them. If they are an “easy” child and you think they don’t require much, think again. They too deserve attention and love and validation. •Please take care of yourself so you have the energy and bandwidth to see their needs and tend to them. So there you have it, straight from an adult glass child’s mouth. What do you think about his advice? #specialneedsfamily #specialneeds #glasschild #fightlikeamother #fightlikeamotherpodcast

Give your kids a voice! Allow them to express all the feelings to you. When kids are a sibling to an extra needs child, they have feelings about it. Allow them those. Even if they are uncomfortable for you. Even if you think they shouldn’t feel that way or say those things…let them have them and express them. Teach them appropriate times and ways to express them and move through them. Kids can’t learn how to process emotions they aren’t allowed to have (and neither can adults) They may feel angry, resentful, jealous, annoyed, exhausted, grief. It’s all okay, it’s so important to allow it all. Put the shame away, we are human, humans have difficult emotions. If their emotions and words are triggering anger and fear for you, it might be time to take a look into your own emotions and if you are allowing yourself to feel them all. Pushing them down and shaming ourselves for having them doesn’t work. If your kiddo says it’s not fair…validate it! It’s not fair! It’s not fair to them or you or the child with extra needs. Our emotions are messages about what we need and sometimes we just need to speak hard truths and have someone say they get it and it’s okay. It doesn’t mean they don’t love their sibling if they express these things because both things can be true. They can deeply love their sibling AND have difficult emotions about it. Give them factual information about their sibling. Help teach them to set firm and kind boundaries and hold them. I promise this way is easier to manage than forcing them to staying silent. It is connecting and builds trust and relationships. Listen to episode 91 for more. #specialneedsfamily #specialneedsparenting #specialneedssibilings #glasschild #fightlikeamother #fightlikeamotherpodcast

“Auggie is the Sun. Me and Mom and Dad are planets orbiting the sun. The rest of our family and friends are asteroids and comets floating around the planets orbiting the sun.” Via Pullman I watched Wonder last night with my daughter. I didn’t go into it thinking about my podcast last week, but holy moly Via the sister is a classic glass child. I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to share some of her quotes and some of my observations about her. Go watch the movie, it’s such a sweet one. Another quote by Via: “I used to joke that our house was like the earth revolves around the son, not the daughter, but it’s really not very funny.” I really watched this time from Via’s perspective. She really loves Auggie and is so good to him. She supports him, builds him up and she is a safe person for him to talk to. She’s amazing. AND she is often see through for her parents. She says she knows her parents can’t handle another stress so she gets good grades, doesn’t tell them about her struggles and always says she’s fine. A super special 1:1 day with her mom gets interrupted with Auggie being sick, her mom rushes out to pick him up and Via is obviously heartbroken and yet later that day she convinces Auggie to go trick or treating and makes it so special for him. She tells him they are each others best friends and have to stick together. She’s truly amazing. Another quote: “My mom has a great eye, I just wish that one time she would use it to look at me.” Toward the end of the movie Via gets her time to shine. Her mom sees her and I believe recognizes how much she needs the attention and recognition that Auggie so often gets. I highly recommend watching this sweet, profound movie. It will warm your heart and make you think and can open up conversations. It spurred a good conversation with my daughter and we talked about what she needs from me. It was a fantastic night. #glasschild #theglasschild #invisiblechild #specialneedsfamily #specialneedsparenting #specialneedsiblings #siblingsupport #fightlikeamother #fightlikeamotherpodcast

But with the coping skills of a child, This one got me. As much as we may try to protect our children from the stress and struggles in our families, they still feel it all. Let’s not forget they are children and need extra support and need help learning skills and emotional regulation and acceptance. Glass children become such, not because of the circumstances, but because they are often left to deal with the struggles and stress alone. They are expected to have significantly more maturity and take on more responsibility than they are ready for. As the adults in their life, we have the opportunity to know better and do better. We can be aware and open. We can acknowledge and validate their emotions, we give them a voice to express themselves, we get them added support. We spend time with them and meet their emotional needs. We allow them to be kids and not take on added responsibility and parentify them. It’s often the small and simple things that make the biggest difference. I give several ideas in the podcast this week of how to support and build connection with these amazing kiddos of ours. Our kids don’t have to become glass children. When we actually SEE them and not see through them it changes everything. #glasschild #glasschildren #specialneedsfamily #specialneedsparenting #fightlikeamother #fightlikeamotherpodcast

It’s up! This episode is dedicated to all the siblings of extra needs kiddos. It’s dedicated to my own sweet husband who is a glass child as. one of those siblings. Working on this episode together has been quite healing for him, giving what he experienced a name and a voice. Bringing this awareness is not meant to bring you guilt or shame. It’s not to add more to an overwhelming and overflowing plate. It is meant to help each of us be more aware of our other kids and to see them more clearly. My purpose is to open conversations and to give our glass children visibility and a voice. I know you are doing the absolute best you can, this episode will not tell you that you are doing this wrong. What it will do is educate you and give you simple, actionable things that just might make all the difference for your glass children to feel validated, seen and heard. #glasschild #glasschildren #specialneedsparenting #extraneeds #specialneedsfamily #siblingsupport #fightlikeamother #fightlikeamotherpodcast

Glass children… Here’s a basic definition. Podcast episode coming this week all about this. I’ve been waiting to do this episode to get a therapist on board to do so…but I’ve been waiting too long and have had people ask me to share more about it. So I have done extensive research and reading and I’m doing the thing solo. So watch for me and my hoarse voice to share this episode this week. I also have someone dear to me who is a glass child and I share about his experience in this episode. Please don’t let this shame you. I am doing this to bring awareness and give tools to use to meet the needs of everyone in your family. I would love to answer any questions you might have. Apparently comments are down today so DM me what you want to know about glass children! #glasschild #emotionalneglect #specialneedsfamily #extraneeds #parentsupport #parentingsupport #parentcoach #parentingcoach #parentcoaching #fightlikeamother #fightlikeamotherpodcast
