Weles Celebration (1/3) Although three months late, I'm excited to finally share these snapshots from the Rodnovers' Weles celebration back in February, which I was privileged to participate in and immortalize. In the Rodnovers' faith, Weles is known as the god of magic, oaths, and art, as well as the master of Navia, the land of the dead. This powerful figure, draped in mystery and mischief, was honored with a nighttime celebration that truly made you understand his enigmatic essence. As is customary during Rodnover celebrations, an offering table was dressed and a ceremonial fire was lit. Everyone purified themselves before entering the circle, where the zhret led the festivities, presenting offerings to the gods. There is a great saying, "if you go on a spree then go whole hog including the postage". In that vain, I recently decided to try making soap, and produced a very large quantity (over 200 bars!) of all-natural handmade tallow soap, scented with essential oils only, coloured with spirulina powder (light grey) and charcoal (black)- the white part is the natural colour of the soap. The charcoal in this soap was collected from a ceremonial fire that burned in my home fireplace, that I started using an ancient/ancestral friction fire method known as the hand drill, and which I kept burning for 4 full days and nights without the fire going out during a winter ceremony in the cold months of winter 2023. This all-natural soap was made with Love, care, compassion, and community. The tallow is ethically sourced and homemade; I rendered it from beef fat offcuts that I rescued from a local butcher who otherwise would have simply thrown them out, so the beautiful tallow & energy from those special cows in these bars is saved from careless wastage. Essential oils include orange, lemon, patchouli, and frankincense. The charcoal is a slightly coarse grind to give it some scrubbing texture. Price is 7$ for one bar, or 21$ for four. We sat by the light of the fire, an arm’s length away from one another. Tears streamed down her face and shudders of emotion came between breaths. Her attention was focused inward. As she turned to face me, her internal focus shifted outward. I gently asked, “How are you doing?” She said, “Good. The ancestors are here and they’ve come with gifts.” In this heightened state of awareness, the energy around us felt charged with ancient wisdom. It was a moment of profound connection, being held in the embrace of something greater than ourselves. Her attention shifted again as she returned to the interaction taking place within. I leaned back slightly and remained attentive. Preparing for the opportunity to integrate the experience, I continued to listen and hold space. The following day during our integration conversation, we discussed the messages the ancestors had come to share and the meaning she ascribed to them. The gifts she had spoken of were both personal and universal, full of wisdom and insight. She was profoundly self aware as she clearly related her extraordinary experience. The time after a ceremonial fire with plant medicine is sacred. We revisit the whole experience and recall what was seen, heard, and felt… we don’t just pack up and go home. I had an incredible Imbolc-Birthday getaway. I got to stay in the round rock house right on the ocean I’ve always wanted to stay in. We had a big dramatic fire and a ceremonial fire under clear night skies filled with millions of stars to celebrate Imbolc, Brigid, and my birthday. We saw the prettiest sunset I’ve seen in a while the night of my birthday. I satiated my inner Gollum with rock treasures found along the sandy beach. And I went adventuring with a friend and saw elk, some beautiful land, and discovered sweet waterfall hike. Here are some moments captured, yet there was so much more. Never have I sat in support to a female fire tender. At @in2wildfestival I had the opportunity to do so. 🤲🏾 Draped in red and wielding twin antlers gifted to her by the land, she tends fire in a way I had yet to have seen. What an absolute f*cking badass. Everything was circular. All things considered. Flow. Movement. Presence. She moved clockwise in her tending of the coals. Lifting, settling, spreading, laying, warming as she went. Every placement considered. Every action intentional. Every moment the ceremony. 🦌🔥 This woman lives this tending. Many see friction fire as a challenge - it's only difficult as the skills are no longer passed along. In the old days children grew up and observed these skills on a daily basis. My kids have observed my friction fire practice and mimicked me through play and naturally they’ve wanted to be involved. I was drawn to friction fire as I wanted to learn a way of lighting fires in a holistic way for ritual. I’m not religious and don’t follow any spiritual path (pagan or heathen or otherwise) although my journey with fire has become spiritual and has made me more aware of my natural environment ; the world around ; my connection with my ancestors and the sacredness of fire and life. Today it’s easy to take things for granted and fire (heat\fuel\light) has just become another commodity. For me- there is just something about friction fire – it’s not about efficiency but about connection - you need to be aware and be in touch with your environment – knowing what materials are available and where they can be found and at what times of year and what techniques are best to use with those materials - preparing and storing materials - I’m sure that our ancestors would try and make life as easy as possible when able to inc not having to make a friction set whenever they needed a fire- and lighting a fire may only have been done at auspicious times or only when absolutely necessary Today there is a lot of emphasis on challenging oneself\putting oneself in a survival\risky situation -to prove to oneself (and to others) that they can do it. I think life is boring and risk free for the majority of people. Our ancestors had to survive and adapt and had an intertwined relationship with the world around. Nowadays maybe many crave challenge as it is missing from our everyday life and survival is an inherent part of us. our human connection to fire lies deep - we are forged from fire - our connection to fire is within our dna - we just need to have it rekindled -. and that is what I seek to do through Sacred Hearth Friction Fire-journey with fire- the old way- reconnecting with ourselves, our ancestors, our world through the art of rubbing sticks Ian🙏

🔥I built such a deep relationship with the spirit of Fire during my time in Guatemala. There is a deep, spiritual, and non-expressable connection that I feel when I am with a ceremonial fire, or any fire lit with profound intention. I have worked with fire very intentionally for almost a decade and have had wild, profound, and unexplainable experiences. Last night, seven of us gathered in a below-ground fire pit in Glenelg to sit with Grandfather Fire and connect with the energy of Spring Equinox (Ostara). We discussed the changes we had observed in the natural world around us since Winter Solstice (Yule) and how our inner world reflected or contrasted this. We spent time reflecting and sharing on what was sprouting and blossoming within us and some of the difficulties of nurturing this new growth in a water-logged, muddy internal landscape. We came to a close by reflecting on what fruit we wish to be nourished by at harvest, in six months time, and which practices we can implement to best support us to be having that experience. I cherish these gatherings. It feels so right and good to be sitting around a fire every feast day, sharing from the heart and our own experience, observing the turning of the wheel of the year and moving in alignment with it toward the fulfilment of our heart's longing. Thank you to those of you who joined me at our Ostara ceremony. I look forward to opening our circle to the public for our next ceremonial fire on the 30th of October for Beltane Festival day.

The large Fire Churn is my favourite way of welcoming fire. The one in the picture is one of my own interpretations which has been used in ritual. It’s not about efficiency or how fast or how challenging but building a contraption based on written records which need community to come together and work together to coax the fire out of the wood. And it’s steeped in folklore and history. These devices really existed .. there are written records and accounts and even a book written in 17th century about Not Feur. The church tried to ban the ritual practice of Neid Fire/Not Feur/ Teign Eigin etc from the 7th century onwards as they were seen to be heathen. They used in ritual to welcome a new pure fire in times of distress and at auspicious times of the year and throughout Europe. The last time they were used in Scotland was around the middle 19th century. I first came across them by accident and was fascinated by the descriptions of them. They have been long forgotten mostly - but are still used in parts of Russia. I’ve written about them on my website. I’m not into them as it’s a challenge - no - but because they are part of my Celtic heritage and a ritual way of sacredly welcoming fire. I just find them majestic and sacred . Finally I’m given the green light to share this work. So honored to be given the role as one of the memory keepers for this special gathering of women from all over the globe. A gathering where we all came together in ceremony to heal, grow, evolve spiritually and emotionally, to learn from each other and reflect back to each other to show us where we’ve grown, where we need some growth and healing and to simply show each other that where we’re at in our growth and evolution is just perfect as we’re all mirrors to each other. I feel beyond grateful to have been part of an experience I haven’t ever had as part of my reality where as a woman I could feel safe and free to be and express myself. Where I felt held and supported by other women who I had just met on the spot. This forest became a world of women for a moment in time and what a powerful and healing one it was. Where children also roamed free. A true utopic ideal. Here women were able to express their divine feminine with no judgement, only acceptance and love while sharing their gifts, magic and talent with all. We have limited space inside the lodge and the whole experience will take about 3 hours, you are not in the sweat lodge for that time, there is ceremony and preparation including the building of the lodge. The ceremony will be lead by Ahau Samuel and Robyn Leonie. Ahau is a natural healer and born in Guanjuato, Mexico. He grew up with natural medicine and is mother is a homeopathic doctor. At 19 he began his journey in Shamanism, in the jungle he learnt closely for over 4 years with the Wirrarikas and Putimayo people and was blessed with various grandfather guides. He has since spent the last 11 years working thru Mexico exploring, learning and sharing healing tools which support his mission to be of service to the world.
