Impractical things to have on a sail boat.... Over the (almost) 20 years that we've lived on Emerald, we've learnt that there are compromises to be made when trying to make a sailboat a home that includes the things you enjoy. One thing I miss about a land home is a garden. So, I've experimented with different plants onboard and I grew herbs and small veg for many years. 5 years ago we visited the Jardin Exotique de Monaco, a cliff side garden dedicated to cacti and succulents. It inspired me to create a mini version, so I bought several baby plants from the garden's shop. Most of those originals are still growing strong along with newer additions, including two that I bought yesterday 😀 Being a monohull, Emerald does heel when sailing, so finding secure storage for the plants requires thought. However, we have had one or two mishaps at sea... The worst was when the cactus with long spikes attached itself to Colin's clothes as he walked past where I'd stored the pot. Feels good to be back in Provincetown for the summer. Still early so it’s not crowded at all, still a bit cold though so I’m looking forward to when it warms up. It’s going to be a crazy busy summer. Ryan will be flying out to Hawaii on June 2nd, Liam will be FINALLY taking his STCW course and getting his launch license, and rumor has it that my brother might be coming for a long weekend in June. Boat wise I have 101 projects but the two that are on the non-negotiable must get done list are remounting the Windlass and rebuilding that whole section to a better way o doing it. And doing a massive solar upgrade which will include replacing the aluminum Bimini with a steel one so it can better take the weight. Work wise there is a pile. I have adjunct reviews coming due, two program assessment reports that need done, and an update to the hospitality management program. My goal is to beat the deadlines on all of it so that I can clear up my schedule for a week in August when the instructional design program students go on a week long break. I’d love to take it easy that week as well. I’d love to finish my redesign this summer so I can get started on refreshing the Instructional Design program this fall. Mostly technology updates, such as how to use AI in ID. Don’t want students graduating without exposure and experience. So busy. Das Cave Reef ist ein Labyrinth (auch Cheese-Reef genannt) von Höhlen und Kanälen durchzieht dieses nördlich, von St. John´s gelegene Riff. Es hat eine korallenüberwucherte Innenlagune und viele einzeln stehende Blöcke. Ein echtes Highlight für Taucher! Mit einer Ausdehnung von 400m Breite und über 1,5km Länge gehört Cave Reef zu den wahrlich „großen Brocken“ im Norden des St. John’s-Bereiches. Es liegt etwa eine Stunde südlich von Mikauwa/Sirenaka und ist eine Ansammlung verschieden großer Blöcke, die oben teils zusammenhängen. Dadurch hat sich in einer Tiefe von 5 bis 9 m ein Gewirr von Höhlen und Kanälen gebildet. Bewachsen sind sie mit unzähligen gelben Fächer- sowie Weichkorallen und einigen Schwämmen. �Einige Durchgänge sind ziemlich eng und man sollte immer auf Kopf und Ausrüstung aufpassen. We spent a day exploring Peterhead prison museum. It was fascinating. A real look at prison life, covering cells, kitchens, laundry, isolation and hospital areas. Screws was filmed here back in the day and Jackie Stewart got rescued from the roof by the SAS during a prison riot. He was one of the wardens. We left Lanzarote by sailing of anchor, which @yvonsche captured for us (📷 1). After a nice sail we arrived in the marina of Puerto del Rosario where big cruise ships are moored (📷 2). In the water we saw small shark swim (📷 3), supercool! We just spend a night and then left for a night sail to Gran Canaria. We enjoyed a beautiful sunset at sea (📷 7). This family was so helpful and kind. In this little town, the one small store doesn’t sell fruit or veg as the locals maintain their own gardens. So, we have grown accustomed to stopping at a house and asking if they had fruit they would be willing to sell to us. No one ever turns us down. We left with a huge bag of fruit and a stalk of 70+ bananas. We have been exploring Peterhead over the last week. We were lucky enough to see a military parade when we arrived which sadly I forgot to photograph. The parade started at the war memorial and went through the town. While in the town we came across the statue of Fisher Jessie. It depicts the women who carried fish out to farms to sell and came back with fresh vegetables to sell at the port. We both loved the bench with the glass back which produced beautiful shadows when the sun was out. It felt like we had arrived on another planet. The colors of the land and water were so different and we travelled for such a long time. We explored the volcanic island Lanzarote by car. We started with a mall because somehow Joshua lost one shoe so he needed a new pair. We visited Timanfaya national park which was really interesting. You take a bustour through an amazing landscape (📷 4). On the main area there are some demonstrations of the heat of the volcano with water and fire. They even have a volcanic oven where they roast chicken, pretty cool. Or hot, I should say! We explored with friends and visited the green lake Charco Verde (📷 5). One night we treated ourselves with steaming fajitas (📷 6). Today is the day we let go lines⛵️. We will be embarking on a 1600nm (a touch under 3000km) sail from Puerto Rico🇵🇷 to Canada🇨🇦 via Bermuda 🇧🇲 Specifically, Halifax, Nova Scotia, up in the North Atlantic. This will potentially be our most serious sail to date despite crossing the Atlantic from Europe to the Caribbean a year and a half ago. It will definitely be our longest sail for a while. Mast replacement - week 5 (!!!) Progress this week has been slower than we would like (MUCH slower) … we were hoping we would be done … not even close … so a re-plan is required … We were planning to head north to Martinique to stock up on some food / nice cheeses / cold meats / wine etc and to visit a couple of shops for a few things we want / need. Also a shorter couple of test sails felt sensible to check the new rig out before we did a long ocean passage. However … our insurance requires that we are south of a certain line by 1 June … and at the current rate of progress getting to Martinique and then back south again is starting to look unrealistic ☹️🙄 … so new plans need to be made … We can’t quite believe it’s taking so long to get the mast rigged!
