This book delivers a lot off the back of not very much. The fact that I don’t know much about why things have happened but I so desperately want to! It also made me feel very connected to Lia, our FMC, who is discovering things as she goes. There is a real sense of mystery ❓, I have no clue where this is going but I’m so pleased because it’s been so long since I’ve been truly stumped. The descriptions of the land are gorgeous too. I’m getting proper bringer of justice vibes from Lia 🙌 The magic 🪄 system looks like it’s going to be a stunner too 😍 Not fussed on? Small amounts of waffle 🧇 but honestly it didn’t bother me. Let me start with a confession: I am as gay as it gets when it comes to musical theatre and the work of Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber, so expect a somewhat biased review. Anyone who’s a “theatre buff” will love “Unmasked” by the incredible Andrew Lloyd Webber. This memoir offers a peek into the life of a gifted theatre legend, who even as of a few weeks ago, was made a Knight Companion of the Most Noble Order of the Garter by King Charles III. My favorite chapters of this memoir are of his early school days and how he discovered his music talent as a little boy. Webber started writing musicals as a teenager and broke through with Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat at 19. It was very clear early on that he was born for this. The chapters on Superstar, Evita, and Cats are so much fun. Every time he mentioned a lyric or a song, I would sing the tune. This man is an undisputed king of musicals and there is no doubt about that. At 528 pages, the book is overly long, bogged down by excessive detail that doesn’t necessarily enhance the narrative. Some sections seemed superfluous. I wish the memoir explored more of Webber’s personal life beyond the stage, like the challenges in his marriages, his affairs, and how he coped with adversity or even giving us a real sense of how he manages the pressure to be who he is. Unfortunately, these aspects are largely overlooked, leaving the memoir feeling somewhat superficial. Other than that, oh what a talent. What a career. What an inspiration. I recommend this book to fans of musical theatre and admirers of the work of the legend himself. #booksunday ⭐️⭐️⭐️ ♥️

I wszystkie te sprawy łączą się w jedną całość *** Wkurzało mnie, że doświadczone policjantki lazły w niebezpieczne rejony, nikogo nie informując. Bez żadnego konkretnego powodu. Już autorzy rzadko popełniają takie błędy... Wkurzała mnie ilość trupów, część z nich była kompletnie bez sensu. Także z jednej strony ciekawa i wciągająca, z drugiej wkurzająca. One of the fine brochures which make me so sad that many car manufacturers gave up producing them in favour of PDF files: In 2016, Porsche published a fabulous little book on the then new Porsche 911 R, heir to the legendary predecessor from 1967. The book pays due tribute to the classic 911 R instantly breaking several world records at Monza in 1967 and winning the Tour de France in 1969. Originally, just 23 cars were produced, of which some 300 or 400 survived today 😉 The new R was built 991 times and offered at a surprisingly moderate price of 180,000 euros (in Germany). RuPaul, shante you stay! Editing this memoir must have been a massive undertaking. As RuPaul’s fourth book, I had high expectations for “The House of Hidden Meanings”. I was totally intrigued by its promise to reveal all. We know a lot about Ru, so what more can he say?? I jumped in and got into it. The story picks up around two-thirds of the way through. I hoped for a little more unpacking of the complexities of navigating his life outside of the usual “I always knew I would be famous” or “I was born to be famous” narrative. Overall, this is an enjoyable read. The last few chapters are where it all came together. You meet a caring, kind man who, above all else, wants the world to be a better place for all. Why stop presenting Ferrari 275 books if there are so nice publications around? 😉 Pics 1 to 5 show what is to my knowledge the earliest treat on the 275: Ian Webb's splendid little work from 1981. As usual for any of the Osprey AutoHistory Series titles, the book offers much information on just 136 small-size pages. And as many copies of that particuar title, my copy shows heavy fading from sunlight at the top left corner of the orange front dust jacket 😉 Pics 6 to 10 show Jess Pourret's authoratative work from 1984. For many years, this title was traded at three-digit prices which shows the appreciation of the Ferrari community for this book - although it has been published in French which gives all non-native speakers a hard time as it is so incredibly detailed in regard to technical specifications. Only when other publications on the 275 appeared, prices came down. But nevertheless: This is a must-have book for all 275 aficionados. The COVENANT of WATER Have you ever encountered a book so beautifully written that it captured your attention from the very first page? Despite its brilliance, it is a beast to get through at times. But once you dive back in, you're hooked, feeling like you're part of the family and their story. I anticipated shocking revelations about government failures, corruption, and the various individuals contributing to the decline of our power utility and stru bob; the book delivered that and more. No one wanted this job, actually. Could you blame them? So, De Ruyter’s acceptance of the “poisoned chalice” of a role as CEO of Eskom, is commendable. De Ruyter was a little naïve at first, but quickly found himself battling a relentless surge of corruption, cartels, political meddling, and indifference. De Ruyter concedes that this role is far from a typical CEO position; to me as a reader, it resembles a “Game of Thrones” scenario, but only the indifferent and corrupt survive. Don’t worry, the book is not all doom and gloom. I got to meet the family man, hear the softer side of De Ruyter and his personal story and some solutions he believed would help solve this massive power challenge. It was good for De Ruyter to pen this book, providing insight into the underlying dynamics of our power utility and the many forces involved. It’s good to add this perspective in the mix of all we know, especially from the Zondo Commission. What encouraged me the most in this book is that we now know what to do to increase generation capacity, look at alternative source of energy outside of coal, deal with a corrupt supply chain and improve culture of delivery and pride. I also like that De Ruyter pays homage to the dedicated men and women striving for better, despite the prevalence of corruption that pervades Eskom’s halls. We now need the faculty to act and deliver a load-shedding free South Africa. Now it’s a waiting game I guess. #BookSunday 📚

Hey :) Il y a longtemps que je n'avais pas chroniqué un manga. Je suis très contente aujourd'hui de vous parler de "Daisy, lycéennes à Fukushima" de la mangaka Reiko Momochi. Adapté d'un roman ainsi que de témoignages et publiée initialement en deux volumes, cette histoire est ressortie en intégrale courant mars pour fêter ses dix ans. Nous y suivons le quotidien de Fumi et ses amies, quelques mois seulement après la catastrophe de Fukushima. Les jeunes filles se posent évidemment beaucoup de questions; que risquent-elles à cause des radiations ? Comment aider les réfugiés ? De quelles manières leurs parents vont-ils pouvoir poursuivre leurs activités ? Et beaucoup d'autres choses encore... J'ai vraiment beaucoup apprécié ce shojo qui revient sur l'une des plus grandes tragédies de ce début de siècle mais d'un point de vue très intime et surtout avec beaucoup de pudeur. Malgré son sujet hyper délicat, j'ai trouvé "Daisy" plein de poésie. La mangaka a voulu parler de Fukushima sans faire trop de drama et c'est franchement réussi. La fraîcheur, l'humour et l'amitié de ces lycéennes très attachantes contrebalencent la gravité des faits. Des faits que j'ai apprécié découvrir. Je me suis rendue compte que je ne savais pas grand chose au final des retombées de Fukushima. Je connaissais les évènements mais j'ignorais tout ce qui s'était passé ensuite. J'ai donc trouvé ce manga nécessaire. En ce qui concerne le character design et le graphisme, je ne suis pas forcément fan. C'était un dessin peut-être un peu trop naïf à mon goût. Voilà ce que je pouvais vous dire de ce manga sur lequel j'ai vraiment craqué. Postanawia rozpocząć nowe życie, żeby zapomnieć o trudnych przeżyciach. Przypadek sprawia, że trafia do Dębowego Uroczyska i spontanicznie postanawia tu zostać, na chwilę? Na dłużej? Zupełnie nie planuje. Trafia do pensjonatu dwójki młodych osób Asi i Przemka. Ci nie do końca radzą sobie z jego prowadzeniem. Nina początkowo trafia tu jako gość, z czasem zaprzyjaźnia się z bohaterami, zostaje jako domownik, pomagając im rozkręcić biznes a także nawiązując z nimi współpracę. Nina wykorzystując swoje doświadczenie, po zakończonej zawodowej służbie wojskowej, postanawia założyć działalność związaną z organizacją spotkań integracyjnych dla wytrwałych i rządnych przygody. Wykorzystując naturalne tereny Dębowego Uroczyska, czyli rozległy las i nierówny teren, organizuje ścianki wspinaczkowe, i przetrwanie w trudnych warunkach. It was the literary equivalent of discovering that your favourite coffee shop also makes the best croissants, “Finding Purpose” by Thami Nkadimeng is a deeply personal narrative that resonates on a universal level. Reading this book feels akin to being invited into Thami’s living room, a warm cup of something comforting in hand, as she unfolds stories that feel intimately familiar and refreshingly unique. Can you imagine Enzo Ferrari wearing a Goodyear hat or performing a comical face with a cigarette in his mouth? Would you have thought that in 1924 the Commendatore travelled with Antonio Ascari to the Targa Florio by ship!? "Una Vita per l'Automobile" features these and many other fantastic, often intimate shots from Enzo Ferrari's private archives, including photos of family meetings, picnics, business meetings and other occasions the public wouldn't notice at that time Many of these hadn't been published before - and haven't been seen thereafter. In other ways as well, "Una Vita" is a remarkable book: Although published in 1998, ten years after Enzo Ferrari had passed away, authorship has been attributed to l'Ingenere. Because, as his son Piero Ferrari writes in the foreword: "Every word is Enzo Ferrari's own, taken from his books, his personal papers and the entries in the diaries he kept so religiously, day after day, year after year throughout his life." Editing work has been done by Franco Gozzi (who himself published a great book about his life later on). The book even documents Enzo Ferrari's very last entry in his diary, written on June 4, 1988. Sadly, this fine book hasn't received any broader appreciation outside the very close community of longtime Ferrari enthusiasts, as it is traded at rediculously low prices. That even applies to the second, limited edition of which only 1,000 copies were made, which is traded at moderate prices considering its production quality and rarity. Only the third, very special limited edition of (probably) 200 copies, personally commissioned and signed by Piero Ferrari, receives due tribute. Organization or Chaos? How do you organize your books? In an ideal world, my books would be on a single row by author's name and publication order. In reality... it's pure chaos. Almost. I have a system. I think. My books are divided by read and unread but I have so many unread books that they are just placed wherever there's still space. It's driving me crazy but it's the reality of living in a small apartment. No one escapes pressure, right? But my goodness, we need a break! Since 2020, the demands on leadership have become even more acute. I think about this often as I navigate my world and seeing how much has changed and how much still needs a serious relook.
