May wrap-up: I was somewhat distracted this month by the birth of another grandchild , so reading has taken a bit of a back seat. That said, there have been some interesting reads: ⭐️Overall favourite - Over The Moon by Imtiaz Dharker: a beautiful collection of poems which reflect on her life in London and searing grief after the loss of her husband. She is also an accomplished artist and the illustrations accompanying her poems are haunting. ⭐️Art history - Mysterious Wisdom, The Life and Work of Samuel Palmer by Rachel Campbell-Johnson: there is a very particular joy in reading a well researched, engaging biography, and this fits the bill. My only criticism is that it is thin on illustrations. ⭐️Crime Novel - Sleeping Dogs by Russ Thomas: this is the fourth in this Sheffield based crime series, which just gets better. I think you’d like this series @barbaras.book.obsession given your enthusiasm for Simon Mason. ⭐️Readalong - Doreen by Barbara Noble: I rejoined the #greatwomenwriters group for this lovely wartime story about an evacuee caught between middle and working class life. It’s a powerful read and I think challenged our thinking. ⭐️Disappointment of the month - unfortunately two books vied for this accolade: Everything The Light Touches by Janice Pariat and Mary Olivier: A Life by May Sinclair. I found both books meandering and frustrating. I was particularly disappointed in May Sinclair having really enjoyed her previous book The Three Sisters. The pier was opened in 1869 and was described by Sir John Betjeman as “The most beautiful pier in England” - The Huntley & Palmers biscuit tin gallery at Reading Museum - Reading the first three books in Dorothy Richardson’s Pilgrimage series. Virginia Woolf said of Dorothy Richardson, “she has invented a sentence we might call the psychological sentence of the feminine gender.” Her writing is incredible and I’m hooked - Sitting on a bench in Holland Park on a sunny day - Seeing @gogo_penguin at the Birmingham Conservatoire. I’ve been a huge fan of this modern jazz trio since hearing the breakneck piano on the track Garden Dog Barbecue. Highly recommended - Caoilfhionn Rose and her new album Constellation. Another sicky sepsis stay so another crap background but another good one provided by my sissy What a good read this one was. Holly Jackson really writes a nice easy reading book. The Reappearance of Rachel Price felt a bit more mature than GGGTM but I guess similar concepts. However, I would say this one was more twisty, which made it a 4/5✨ read for me. Highly recommend! Follows ‘Bel’ being involved in a documentary about her mother going missing 16 years earlier, throughout the beginning of the filming, her mother then reappeared but the stories of her disappearance don’t seem to add up. Very suspicious😮
📚Book Review📚 Hera by Jennifer Saint Hera has often been portrayed as the jealous wife, nothing but a vindictive Queen rather than a Goddess in her own right. Jennifer Saint seeks to redress this, elevate her from the status of Zeus’s wife and show her for what she truly is; daughter of a Titan and a powerful being in her own right. After overthrowing the Titans and embarking upon the age of the Olympians, Hera envisions a world where there is peace, where she and Zeus will rule together. Zeus has other ideas however and instead of offering a partnership, he bestows upon her the domain of marriage and childbirth, insisting she become his wife. This is the first of Saint’s books about a Goddess rather than a mortal and I think it suffered slightly for that. It’s hard to empathise with Hera the same way and I struggled to feel a connection with her. There are moments when her humanity shone through; the scene with Zeus on the beach is particularly powerful and seeing her with Typhon gave us glimpses into a more compassionate and caring side. What I found hard to forgive or understand was her treatment of the women who bore sons with Zeus; it just seemed so petty and cruel to punish these women who most of the time were, quite frankly, rape victims. To be fair to her, we can see that her journey was greatly influenced by the men in her life being incredibly toxic. Zeus treats her with such contempt and cruelty and her sons are no better so it’s hardly surprising she’s slightly bitter and twisted. Its written beautifully though and even if Hera wasn’t the Goddess for me it’s still a captivating read. Goodnight Mister Tom Michelle Magorian I’ve read this book so many times and watched the film and I have such high praise for it, I think it’s a beautiful book. I’m going to keep this review short and sweet as it’s a book that I read with Lilly. We pick a book and read a chapter of it every night, so I’m glad this was our book of choice for April. I obviously shed tears of sadness and happiness again! Even though I know what’s coming, this book will get me every time. Then I shed even more tears when Lilly and I watched the film together. She thinks I’m a weirdo, but her time will come when she starts to get all hormonal!! If you’ve never read Goodnight Mister Tom, then I urge you to pick it up because it’s wonderful. It’s filled with so much pain as Willy is an evacuee who has been sent to live with Mister Tom in the countryside, as Tom lives next to the church and Willy’s mother wants him to live somewhere where he’ll get some discipline as he’s a naughty boy. Tom’s exterior looks hard and tough, but he is full of kindness and love and shows Willy what it’s like to live a life to the full, even during the war. Book review 📚 Strange sally diamond by Liz Nugent Rating - ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ WOW, this book was not what i expected at all! I assumed this would be solely based on the character of ‘sally diamond’ but there’s a whole other character, which makes this book utterly compelling. Within the first few chapters I just knew this was going to be a 5 star book for me! This was such a unique thriller, told in two seperate timelines that eventually come together. The way these characters were written was outstanding. They were portrayed as dark, witty and even humorous at times. The story will tug at your heart strings. It is emotional, unsettling and disturbing but the characters are so well intertwined (the good and the bad) that the story is absolutely captivating and I could not put it down. Book review 📚 People Person by Candice Carty-Williams ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5/5 I really really enjoyed this book. I saw a review saying they didn’t get a lot of character development through the book and I couldn’t have disagreed more with that comment. This book is ultimately about the almost instant relationship siblings can have without having known each other very well in the past. I loved all the dynamics of each relationship as they all connected to each other differently. The way they can talk to each other in a way they’d never talk to other people is so relevant to sibling relationships. Candice understands sibling dynamics and I was here for every last bit of it. The book is funny and a great story, highly recommend! The plot.. If you could choose your family, you wouldn’t choose the Penningtons. Dimple, Nikisha, Danny, Lizzie and Prynce are half-siblings who don’t have much in common except abandonment issues. But when a catastrophic event forces them to reconnect with each other and with Cyril Pennington, the absent father they never really knew, things start to get complicated fast... 📖 Book Review 📖 The Book of Cold Cases - @simonestjames Synopsis in the comments 🤟 The Book of Cold Cases for me is an example of one of the pitfalls of bookstagram for me. I bought it not long after it first came out with the premise sounding right up my street and with the bonus of having a great cover I remember looking forward to reading it...then I saw a bad review for it, I can’t even remember who by at this point or why it was negative, but I totally put me off it. I’ve been trying to get through some books that have been sitting on the shelves for a while so finally picked it up and I was hooked from the start 🤣 Being a true crime content lover the character of Shea Collins was one I found really appealing and her determination to solve a decades old mystery, as well as the flashback story of a suspected killer, Beth Greer was engrossing enough to keep me turning the pages despite sleep calling my name haha. There was a heavy supernatural element to The Book of Cold Cases that actually felt out of place at times, I get the story that was being told but I did find myself wishing it played out as more a straight crime thriller. That is possibly the reason I was put off but I honestly can’t remember. I did enjoy the book, the mystery at the centre of the story was a really interesting one that had me hooked, with a decent lead character whose past plays a massive part in her life and actions. As I said not everything hit but it’s a shame it took me so long to read it...I’ll be a bit quicker to get to Simone St. James’ other books! Have you read The Book of Cold Cases? Book review 📚 The kind worth killing by Peter Swanson Rating - ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This one really surprised me, I am usually drawn to books that have crazy/unexpected plot twists but I loved this one for the character development. The main character had a really interesting (f*ckd up but interesting 😂) story that kept me hooked throughout. Not taking away from the fact it did provide some plot twists but I enjoyed this book more for the main story and the way in which the characters were written. Whilst the ending did make sense I was slightly disappointed as the main character was perceived to be intelligent and I just felt it was a shame how the book ended based on that. 📚 Set myself the goal of reading 25 books this year which I’ve just completed, and reading 14 Philippa Gregory books has definitely helped 😅 Came into possession of these Tudor novels at the end of last year, and started reading them on 5th April, and finished yesterday the 17th May which I am really proud of! They are somewhat accurate to history with a big dose of artistic license, but I’ve really enjoyed them. My favourites were, The Lady of the Rivers, The King’s Curse, and The Boleyn Inheritance. Book review 📚 The Last Thing to Burn by Will Dean ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 This was a fairly short read but for some reason the first half took me way too long to read. For some reason I started reading reviews of the book not long after I’d started it and one review stuck with me and I was under the assumption I was going to be very mad at the ending. Either the review was a red herring or they misinterpreted the emotions of the main character. Either way, I really enjoyed this book. The isolated nature of the book was great and it dealt with some very real issues in the world/UK currently. It was an interesting way to shape a thriller narrative and it made for good reading. So, it took me a day to write this review. The cleverly arranged plot twists made me turn pages and re-read lines. A phenomenal thriller indeed but- here the literary critic inside me is urging to speak. Well, In my opinion, there are too many twists in the book. I think lots of children have wanted to become their headteacher at some point so it was funny to see how that role would be perceived from a child’s point of view. 📖 Book Review 📖 Working Stiff - Judy Melinek, M.D. & T.J. Mitchell Synopsis in the comments 🤟 This was a fantastic little book, full of interesting stories that are at times gruesome, hilarious and heart-breaking. Working Stuff is the memoir of someone that holds a vital job in society that is sometimes looked at with disgusted purely down to its grim nature but I found it utterly fascinating. It ticks the boxes of being an out of the ordinary memoir whilst also having that element of true crime and gore (I know plenty on here that will love it for that description alone haha). My one criticism of Working Stiff, is that with most of the murders Dr Melinek investigates and testifies about, she never finds out the results so you are left hearing about gruesome crimes with no outcome, some serious googling happened afterwards, but this is because she mainly has the focus of doing her job right and supporting those left behind which is to be fair more important. As I mentioned I often found this book hilarious, but you probably have to have the right mind-set for that and I think it's probably a common thing to find humour in a job like this just to stay sane. There are however some real emotional punches in this book, with the events and aftermath of 9/11 being particularly devastating. Working Stiff isn’t for the light-hearted or the queasy but it is a fascinating look at the work of a forensic pathologist.
