Well…I’m behind. Books: Autumncrow by Cameron Chaney. Goosebumps: Welcome to Murder House by R. L. Stine. The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson. Dread by Clive Barker. Real quick: First Autumncrow, well I loved this book. I think it has the correct vibe, it reminded me of Halloween when I was young and I love that. The descriptions set you up in October and just feels good, it feels nostalgic. I later realized how this has a Goosebumps vibe as well with the writing style. I really loved Pumpkin light and Saving face and I want to see a more large version of I have no mouth and I must feed (also loved the I feel fantastic reference). I gave it five stars. For Welcome to Murder House (loved the AHS reference lol) I really didn’t like even tho is a classic. I’ve never read any goosebumps books until now but I get the hype I just think I’m really old for this. I will definitely try another one in the future to see. I didn’t like the skepticism neither the open ending. I gave this two stars because of how short it was. For the Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, I loved the story. First I was reluctant but then the story evolved and by the time I was in the letters I really understood the meaning of all. I highly recommend this one, it’s a classic for a reason. I gave this five stars. Lastly for Dread I think in the beginning as well I really didn’t enjoy it, I thought it was predictable and not that interesting but then by the end I found it quite satisfying. I think I would preferred the story rather than the graphic novel and I’m giving it a try in the future as well. I gave this three stars. Well that’s it. My first time reading a Spooksville! 💘When I read Misery in the 90s, I read the movie tie in version. Imagine my surprise (and actual laughing out loud) at this insert 😂 📚Setting a goal of 6 books to read in January helped keep me focused. I didn’t feel rushed to complete books at a record pace. I enjoyed what I read, and due to the blustery weather/seasonal colds we’ve had, that gave me some extra time to read a few more. 🚸 AUTUMNCROW HIGH - FRESH HELL by Cameron Chaney 🚸 . My necks still sore from the break neck speed this book took at the halfway mark. The book meandered through the town on the first half, building tension, mystery, hormonal angst, but once we got to the good bits... that foot didn't come off the accelerator. . Some gnarly scenes, like the watchdog 👅 that I may never recover from. As well as some scarecrow images I'll have to use bleach to scrub from my skull. . There a big switcheroony halfway, which equal parts threw me, and drew me all the way back in. . So many 90s references, the little high school kid in me was in nostalgic heaven. . A great read if you're in the mood for slasher filled horror with generational secrets thrown in. . 🍿 scale - high on entertainment, and considering actual limbs get eaten, it's weighing meatier for me. . 👻 scale - demons a plenty in this high school horror. Last year I read Autumncrow by Cameron Chaney as a buddy read with @tokyorewind so it was only right we did the same for this book. 📚 In Chaney’s next instalment we are transported back to 1994 and a new term is beginning at Autumncrow High for best friends Bailey and Melody. Lately, Bailey has been having strange nightmares- the bags under her eyes can vouch for this. It’s the same nightmare on repeat with a certain boy that makes an appearance night after night. It’s only a dream right? That’s what Melody tells her. What if the nightmare has some real meaning or it’s acting as a warning of sorts? Bailey has had an especially hard time of late since the mysterious disappearance of her father who the police presume must be dead. Autumncrow High - Fresh Hell by Cameron Chaney. 🔪🩸 Despite not posting over October I have actually read some great books including this one! 📚 This was actually my final spooky read for october and it was a treat! 🎃 An easy and cosy read for Halloween but that's not to say it isn't dark and bloody in the nature of classic slashers. Lots of mystery and strong lovable characters to root for. It's a real witches cauldron of all things spooky with so many elements all blending nicely into the story. 𝐀𝐔𝐓𝐔𝐌𝐍𝐂𝐑𝐎𝐖 𝐇𝐈𝐆𝐇: Fresh Hell 🔥 by Cameron Chaney "School is back in session..." Fresh Hell is Cameron Chaney's first full length novel set in the small spooky town of Autumncrow. We first got a taste of this Halloween-infused landscape with Cameron's 2019 collection of short stories and Fresh Hell expands on the mythology rooted in Autumncrow. We follow Bailey Hagan, an Autumncrow High teen who is experiencing sinister nightmares involving a mysterious boy who 'puppeteers' Bailey through some horrifying dreamscapes. When Bailey returns to school, she is aghast to discover the same boy from her dreams has joined as a new student. What follows is a fast-paced horror-mystery that delivers a whopping great twist halfway through. The novel is set around Halloween 1994 and Cameron wraps the reader in all of the nostalgic autumnal goodness. From kooky neighbours to horror-themed establishments, it's a joy to follow these characters around Autumncrow. Cameron peppers the story with nods to '90s culture, books, horror films and Halloween which not only brings the characters to life but also the landscape of Autumncrow which feels like a character in itself. The tone of Fresh Hell feels darker than the short stories, lended by a high body count and a healthy splattering of gore which made the story feel more 'adult' than 'young adult' but that's certainly not a complaint. There are a number of subplot strings such as the disappearance/death of Bailey's father the previous summer and an event described as the 'rapture' in the 1950's which entwine together in the heart-pounding conclusion. Fresh Hell is a finger-burning page-turner and just when you think you know the direction of the story, Cameron pulls the rug out from under your feet. My understanding of Fresh Hell was that this was to be a stand-alone so my only criticism is that I'll have to wait for the next instalment! Favourite line: "She doesn't budge or say anything more, just stands as still as a statue molded against moonlight, spine curved at the most grotesque angle." Rating: 5/5 Published: 2023

Happy Halloween! This year I have really been trying to soak in as much of the Halloween season as possible. We decorated the lawn and carved pumpkins because we are no longer limited by apartment living. I also got into the spirit by only reading books that take place during Halloween. I usually don't like to hold myself to a theme for too long, but I feel like I read a wide variety, with Halloween being the only connecting theme between all of the books. I didn't get to all of the books that I wanted to, but I'm not upset because I can always read them next year. Another activity that I haven't done in years is pass out candy to trick or treaters! I'm very excited, but it is freezing outside, so I'm not looking forward to sitting on a cold porch. As the story progresses it gets wilder, more interesting and intense with added town lore that really makes you wonder why anyone would live in Autumncrow. We get a massive POV change mid book that was not only shocking but a refreshing twist. Some of the scenes were surprisingly brutal and for me definitely elevated the story out of the YA stratosphere. This book kept me guessing all the way through, it wasn’t as predictable as many YA books tend to be. I am HOOKED and can’t wait for the next book. I’m being careful not to give anything away. It was a roller coaster of all the feelings. There were turns and twists that I didn’t see coming. Cameron Chaney almost lost me at one point but then brought me right back into the story. It was so well thought out and put together. There were plenty of nostalgic vibes with 90’s references. It also had one of my favorite themes…female friendship. Bailey is the “weird, monster-loving girl” and Melody is the popular girl full of personality. Their personalities work so well together and it was fun getting to know them. The atmosphere and setting were perfect! It had all the autumn vibes with descriptions that made me feel like I was there in the town of Autumncrow. I loved getting more history on the town and its founders. It really helped pull it all together. If you’re a fan of 90’s YA horror like Fear Street, I think you will love this one! It was dark and full of gruesome kills. I finished Autumncrow High: Fresh Hell by Cameron Chaney this week and it was an easy 5 stars for me. I'm STILL thinking about the ending of this book days after finishing it. If you were/are a fan of Fear Street, Christopher Pike, etc, from the 90s like me...I highly recommend checking this out as it has that same feel...but...even better. And that's saying a lot because I LOVED those books so much growing up. The writing is fantastic. You won't find any over the to, extreme horror in this book, but it doesn't pull any punches either. The horror is present from chapter one. The characters are teens, but I don't think you have to BE a teen to relate to them. The characters feel like real people, and some of my favorite moments in the book were actually the more quiet ones, small scenes that really made the character relationships and the setting come alive. Autumncrow High (Fresh Hell) - Cameron Chaney. It’s 1993, the school year has just begun, and Bailey Hagen is plagued by nightmares. At least they aren’t real. Or are they? Why does the new student in town look exactly like the guy from her nightmares? What is really going on in Autumncrow Valley? Will they all survive to the end of the school year? This was definitely a book of two halves for me. I don’t usually read YA, but for some reason, this is my third YA horror of the month. And it does start off decidedly YA. There isn’t anything wrong with that - but personally it does make me cringe a little. Teenage drama just doesn’t do it for me. So it took me a little while to get into, but once I got to the second half, I was hooked. There are clever twists and surprising turns, and I was absolutely burning through pages. This was a whole lot of fun. One thing I adored about this was the world building. The original short story collection revolving around Autumncrow was a favourite October read last year for the same reason. The setting of Autumncrow Valley and the expansion of its lore and its inhabitants was such a treat. From the forever autumnal trees to the scary decorations and scarecrow mazes and vampire themed burger bar…the way Halloween is fully embraced in this town sings on every page. Look, even though Autumncrow is clearly a terrible place, who wouldn’t want to visit and get absorbed in that spooky atmosphere? This is a must read for Point Horror/Fear Street fans. It’s heavy on the nostalgia, horror references, and halloween vibes. The PERFECT read for this time of year. HE'S THE BOY OF HER DREAMS. Fresh Hell (Autumncrow High) by Cameron Chaney Released (2023) Star Rating -⭐⭐⭐⭐ School is back in session at Autumncrow High. Will the class of 1994 survive long enough to graduate, or will the cursed town of Autumncrow devour them all? You can definitely see Cameron's influences throughout this book and he blends them well through a very engaging writing style. There's also a twist which happens a little over halfway through the book and I've got to say I loved it. The reason I docked a star from my rating is firstly I felt the book was a little too long, especially early on and I think it would have benefited from tightening up the page count. Secondly, we get introduced to a plethora of fascinating locations around Autumncrow, namely Spooky's Cafe, Madame Tinkett's Sweets, Undead Video etc... and we spent very little or no time at all at these places and I feel it would have been really cool to have explored them and the town of Autumncrow further. This anthology covers all the bases for good Halloween/October reading. I'm currently reading Autumncrow High: Fresh Hell and really enjoying it! Cameron's prose are fantastic. This book is a page turner so be ready for late nights reading just to find out what happens next! Also, for anyone wondering, you don't have to read "Autumncrow" to read "Autumncrow High" incase you're in the mood for a novel rather than an anthology but I would highly recommend it! Cameron Chaney of @library_macabre recently published the first entry in his indie YA horror series Autumncrow High. The series is set in the fictional small town of Autumncrow, Ohio, a town that appears to celebrate Halloween year round. Set in 1994, the book is a nostalgic throwback to R. L. Stine, Christopher Pike, Diane Hoh, and the Point Horror books of the 80s and 90s. There’s been a lot of buzz about this book amongst the horror booktuber community, and I was intrigued (especially since I am working on my own indie YA horror novel). The dedication, effort, and wordsmithing Chaney poured into this book is palpable— his prose is textured, richly atmospheric, and elevated for the genre. I loved reading the first half of this so much for that reason— as the reader is introduced to the town, the characters, etc. In the second half of the novel, I gleaned some elements of Netflix horror thrown into the mix (“The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina,” “Wednesday,” “Fear Street,” Mike Flanagan, etc.). Throughout the book, Chaney shifts between emotionally warm moments and intense cold brutality. I was really emotionally connected to the story’s central protagonist, Bailey Hagen, and was with her every step of the way. There’s a lot of intense gore, historic town lore, creepy scarecrows, monsters, ghosts, a haunted school, etc. As a series opener, Chaney lays the groundwork for more books to follow. It was an enjoyable read and you can really tell that Cameron loved these characters and the world he built. Check it out if you are a YA horror fan! Book Review: AutumnCrow By: Cameron Chaney This was such a good little collection of stories. I loved the town of AutumnCrow and that it was spooky and scary all year round. It reminded me of Fear Street and there’s just not enough books that are spooky and take place in towns like this. The stories aren’t particularly scary, but they’re creepy and we’re very good.
