Holderness Hedgehog Hospital were recently involved in an incredible rescue. This little girl, Hope, was found frozen in the mud. She was gently warmed and taken to Holderness Hedgehog Hospital who worked hard to bathe her and warm her as she was barely clinging to life. 24 hours later she looked very different and was doing very well. Blyth Wildlife Rescue have recently been helping some orphaned hoglets, amongst the other hedgehogs in their care. The hoglets are currently being hand reared, which means weighing, feeding and toileting them every 2-3 hours, day and night. If you grow brassicas without any form of netting or pesticides, you will know that such an unblemished specimen is a bit special. I sowed pointy cabbage on the 18 September 2022. After I had pricked them out into 10cm pots, they very slowly grew through October, November, December and even possibly January, before I planted them in the greenhouse as a sort of last ditch attempt, see what happens type of thing. In fact they had languished so long in the pots that I had long lost the labels and actually thought they were cauliflower. Come Spring, the cauliflowers I already had growing began to head up and it became clear that these were cabbages. I ended up planting my tomatoes in between the “gaps” and left them to it, fully expecting them to keep rising up and go straight to flowering. But no! They have grown beautifully into solid heads which I could probably harvest already. I’m one of those “wait and see” gardeners, so they will probably split on me before I get to harvest them but “bigger is better” no? The sheep pretend they don't know they're grazing on holy ground (pic #1). Prevailing homomogeny states that animals, and especially ruminants, "live in the moment". Sheep know this is untrue, since sheep live across a smear of time that begins well before they were born and ends long after they die. I won't for a moment suggest that sheep are clever, but their perspective is, ummm... spread out. Anyway, the sheep remember that the ground is sacred due to an unspoken collective memory of a time when those lumps in the field ( #2) were 2m high concentric earth banks 100m across. They remember (and the TV tower #3 remembers and the earth remembers) that the people who came to the monument were more spread out too, how their edges were harder to spot, how they merged more into each other and into the earth and into the TV tower that was not yet standing but they knew would come. The sheep remember how Monument Humans were the first to start moving plants around and putting them in different bits of soil, how they would artfully rearrange the land just so, taking care of details. And how sometimes the plants would still die and the people wouldn't no why and would cry and go hungry. Sometimes the humans would die too. Sometimes they would pray at the monument for more plants or less rain or stupider sheep. Every so often the humans would start huge fires and the sheep would wish that fire was the worst thing humans would ever do, but they already knew about the TV tower so of course they knew about everything else. Like all people, sheep offer up themselves, or bits of themselves ( #4). Sometimes a sheep will offer up her entire self to a human, or a fox or the flies. But more often she will give away her edges, to become the lining of a nest, or to mark a path for an adder, or just to show the humans that our edges are harder to define than they like to believe.

Dahlias all planted out today with their protection cones around the base of flowers protect them from slugs/snails. Seems to be working. It's time to wake the dahlias up. Cross fingers, it seems no late frost this year 🤞🙄. My dahlias have been dozing under a variety of tubs. I didn't bother digging any up last winter, partly due to lack of storage space, I left all 20+ in the ground, covered by pots packed with wool insulation (the sort used in food cold boxes). I can get away with this because of my free draining chalk, the tubers remain dry in the soil over winter (that's the theory!). I removed all the wool material from the upturned pots about 2 weeks ago but left the covers on for a bit longer. The wool appears to have prevented slug or snail damage to the usually irresistible new shoots. I now feed and mulch each clump and leave them to work their magic. Before and after. Same plant, 5 minutes weeding, several (it felt like hundreds) slugs rehomed. We don’t use slug pellets. We use the ‘slug holiday’ tactic of moving the slugs a loooooooooong way away down the garden. And we have little ponds near the flowerbeds to encourage frogs. I then turn a blind eye if the frogs take the slugs for themselves (I don’t really I am actually quite pleased, sorry slug lovers). Anyway, this lupin has overwintered and is throwing up new leaves all over the place #springiscoming
Slugs are quite understandably not to everybody’s liking because they can do a lot of damage to flowers and crops. But they do serve incredibly important functions in the garden ecosystem - as detritivores breaking down dead organic matter such as leaves and fallen fruit and as an important part of the food chain themselves, providing food for a wide range of birds, mammals and ground beetles. Some indeed are predatory themselves. An important aspect of rewilding is to restore the natural processes and balances within our environment and to embrace those species which we have been hitherto conditioned to dislike and destroy. A biodiverse garden is one in which slugs are far less likely to be a problem and actually are part of the bigger solution. Newt rescue post! I discovered a poor, suffering, dehydrated newt under a terracotta plant pot in one of my beautiful Hampstead Heath gardens. It was surrounded by shrivelled up slugs, who had eaten toxic pellets. I imagine this newt had nibbled on a poisoned slug and was slowly suffering a horrible fate. I scooped up the rigid, scorched newt, and popped the hose on to give him a drink and hopefully a chance of survival. After 10 minutes in this make shift swimming pool, newty gradually improved and I released him at the end of the garden, ajoining one of the heath's ponds. Most plot holders' at my allotment use pellets, particularly during this very wet, frustrating, growing season; but I've been determined to grow organically over the past few years. Coffee grounds, egg shells, wool pellets and beer traps reduce the impact of slugs and snails and through organic growing my plot welcomes endless froglettes who will munch on the healthy molluscs before they have the chance to work through my veg. Moral of the story, DO NOT USE SLUG PELLETS. Some photos from the garden taken yesterday by my lovely hubby @thecolumbarium The rose arch through to the wood is looking the best I've ever seen it, with the pink roses flushing much darker pink than they usually do. The creamy yellow rose is usually much whiter. Strange how the weather can change rose colours from one year to the next. Our 'no mow May' (which lasts all the way through to autumn! 😆) has given us the best show yet for meadow grasses and flowers, with betony, Yorkshire fog, self-heal, ladies mantle, fox and cubs, violets, ox-eye daisies, cocksfoot grass, buttercups, white clover, sorrel, ribwort plantain, vetches and lots of meadow grass species growing throughout. We've even had a couple of horse chestnuts self seed (they can't stay!) These photos show that you can have a wild, untamed garden that still looks loved and not abandoned or derelict. We're doing #nomowmay again this year. We cut paths through the grass and leave the rest to grow, flower and set seed before it's cut like hay at the very end of the season. We just trim around the edges (this helps it to look like we intended to leave the rest long and we're not just being lazy! 😆) The difference it makes for wildlife is huge. Last year we had so many more insects. Bees, butterflies and even crickets which we've never really had in the garden before. We found hundreds of tiny froglets in the long grass last year too. And they're very welcome as a natural slug control! You don't need to give over a huge amount of space, just a patch of a few square feet can become a haven. So, this week I went to pick our one and only prize strawberry, nurtured and loved for weeks on end. We planned to carve it to share between the four of us - until we found it had been eaten from the inside out by a slug :( I usually avoid slug damage by only planting slug-resistant plants (roses, foxgloves, verbena bonariensis, nepeta, penstemon, linaria and astrantia are looking lovely this week) and planting the plants the slugs eat high up on the potting bench - unfortunately my strawberry plants aren't high enough :( Interestingly, my foxglove leaves have a lot of slug damage this summer - they're obviously eating them, which can't be a great plan given the fact they're poisonous 😳 Do you suffer with slugs in your garden? Ahhh! I know spring has well and truly sprung when my resident hedgehogs 🦔 appear! This one has been with us for around five years and is quite used to us, he does hiss at us if he’s not happy so we know exactly where we stand! 🤣 Great creatures to have in the garden, they eat all manner of garden pests, slugs and snails in particular. If you think you have hedgehogs in your garden leave some cat food out for them, this one loves Whiskas! Also leave as much of your garden wild as you can, leave gaps in wooden fences for them to move between gardens and leave a water source for them too. I have an old Belfast sink that I have dug into a wild spot next to the lawn, I filled that with large rocks and fill it with water.
