⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️? The narrator perfectly encapsulates a ten year old without being as annoying as a ten year old. HA. That giddy naive tone was great for the story. For the first 25% I was convinced that I hated this book. But I couldn’t stop. At that point I decided to succumb to the chaos and I really kind of fell in love?? I told a friend it was like cheese- really enjoyable yet made my stomach and head hurt. This was extremely abrasive and I know it will only be for a certain audience, but for that specific group it will be a big hit. Molly is not your typical 10 year old. I’m assuming a lot of that is due to her unresolved trauma and difficult family situation. At the end, I was sad this was over. I’m so confused on how I feel, clearly. If you liked the first one, you’ll love this one, and the surprises within its pages. I laughed out loud, clutched my heart, gasped in shock, abruptly sat up during intense moments, and remained thoroughly entertained from the dedication to the acknowledgements. There’s so much about this book I loved, but in an effort to not spill any piping hot tea, I just want to thank Brynne for a fantastic read. And can we take a second to congratulate Brynne’s excellence in detailing the vile behavior of those hunted by our main characters? More often than not, the things that make them villains worth being “deleted,” is the predatory destruction of their victims’ lives. Often, in the real world, these crimes are difficult to prove and too many of these monsters take advantage of the holes in our system and walk free. So to have justice finally served at the hands of our main characters feels like Brynne has righted a wrong (or several), making these books even sweeter. First I must say Leather & Lark was not as scaring as Butcher & Blackbird. Basically check the content warnings because in my opinion this one had less ick related warnings. Other than that difference, this one is just as wonderful as the first book! Lachlan and Lark have fantastic banter and she knows just how to push his buttons! The scene when he finds out about her side hustle is probably my favorite because of how the number just keeps nonchalantly changing the more she thinks about it (when you read it you will understand what I mean). That ending though, so tough! It makes waiting for Fionn and Rose’s book so difficult, so prepare yourself for a cliffhanger! P. S. . “I should’ve known that when adults say ‘someday’,what they really mean is ‘never’. And that when they tell you not to break something, it’s because they already have.” Yesterday was a brilliant beach day here on the coast of South Carolina. I worked for a while then relaxedand finished Women and Children, by @alinagrabowski_ . I saw @sarahjessicaparker talking about this book a while back and submitted a pre-order. I couldn’t be more pleased to report that this is such an excellent debut. The story is set in a fictional Massachusetts town and centers around a local, teenage girl who died while attending a party. I honestly set out thinking this was going to be a who-dunnit murders mystery, but that isn’t what I got . I don’t read blurbs, so I was pleasantly surprised to realize that this more so a story that gives perspective to different characters who have been affected by this girl’s tragic death. Told in vignettes, we get a chorus of ten, very distinct and discernible, female voices. We hear from her friend, a school counselor, the PTA president, a school bully, and eventually from her mom . As their narratives unfold, the reader gets a clearer picture of what has happened to Lucy. As someone who is from a very small town, where everyone knows everyone, I know that when an incident occurs everyone has thoughts and opinions that sometimes overlap and sometimes don’t at all align. This is the reason that I loved this story so much. It’s relatable. And like I mentioned early, the voices are clear and not only do they address how a singular, devastating and untimely death has influenced their lives—we get a multitude of experiences that real women every day face. I can totally imagine this being adapted for the screen. I’m reading Patricia Wants to Cuddle, which I picked up almost entirely because of this blurb on the front cover: “Well, I guess Bigfoot-Lesbian-Romcom-Mystery-Horror is my new favorite genre!” I mean, SOLD.   But I have about 50 pages left, and that’s NOT ENOUGH PAGES to pull everything together! 💁🏻‍♂️Review💁🏻‍♂️ One of the Good Guys by Araminta Hall Pub Date:1/9/24 Publisher: Zando Cole has recently separated from his wife and left London for a new start at country living. Lenora is an artist preparing for a new exhibition who has also moved to a cottage nearby. The two strike up a friendship being the only people living near each other in an otherwise isolated area. When two young women trying to raise awareness on gendered violence go missing, Cole and Lenora find themselves in the middle of the investigation and media storm. The story begins with Cole’s point of view and he genuinely believes he is a ‘good guy’, someone who loves women and treats them with respect. But is he? Shifting to Lenora’s viewpoint is eye opening as we learn not all is what it seems; her perception drastically differs from Cole’s. An epistolary portion focuses on social media posts and news outlets about the two missing activists including public opinions on the involvement of Cole and Lenora. This was done so brilliantly and accurately, it felt like a current event that actually happened. Gender wars seemed to be in full effect over this situation! I wasn’t sure what to expect from One of the Good Guys but what I got was an explosive and subversive dialogue on gendered fear and violence. In my opinion, Araminta Hall gives authentic voice to both male and female frustrations within gender relations. The disparity of fear between men and women is real and exists. What a strange tale of grief and acceptance! A mother creates a monster from a piece of her dead child. I was gripped from the very first page. The novel is not typical horror, it transforms from parental grief to kink and gore. Monstrilio's story is told from four different POVs, each one reading almost like a short story in itself. It was all very creative, but the resulting effect was a dull middle portion that didn't live up to the quality of the first section. But this debut deserves all the attention it has been getting. On finishing reading, I couldn't help but feel for Monstrilio, just a poor thing, scary and adorable.

🔪 Book Review 🐦‍⬛ It isn't often that I pick up a book, devour it, finish it, revel in it, text some irl friends about it, gift the book to someone just to be able to talk about it, and then promptly start reading it again. Butcher & Blackbird by @brynne_weaver was that good, y'all. I inhaled it. I'm such a goody-goody so it is off-brand for this book to be one of my top reads of the year, and yet here we are! ✔️ Friends to Lovers ✔️ Alikes Attract ✔️ Black Cat/Golden Retriever ✔️ He Fell First I'm not usually a dark romance person but this book was magic. It's the unique dark + romcom blend that was one of the initial standouts. There were so many laugh out loud lines/moments even amidst all the killing and gross stuff. It kind of reminded me of the awe I felt when I saw Sweeney Todd for the first time (another dark tale that's also kinda funny). I loved the little adventures that Rowan and Sloane went on as part of their courtship. It felt like the best parts of MTV's The Challenge for me (like the CT and Diem years or even Tori and Jordan in better times). There's something so lovely about working together to accomplish something and I guess it even works in this context lmaoooo. The slow-burn worked well too and the moment when the pot boils over? Truly explosive. I think I had to hydrate after fanning myself, it was that spicy. If you watched Dexter and wanted him and Hannah to have an HEA, this is especially for you. I own this one in all formats but I love having a physical copy. Coleman Hill is a biomythography (a new-to-me word) about two families with complicated relationships, that migrate from the South to New Jersey in 1916. Upon arrival, they learn it isn’t necessarily “the promised land” and work to establish their new lives there. The story spans several decades and generations, and the family members experience both hardship and hurt. ⁣ ⁣ I listened to most of Coleman Hill on audio, it’s hard to pass on Bahni Turpin and Dion Graham narrating! I appreciated the family tree in the physical book, which not only has a great cover but also high quality pages and photos throughout. Let me just say that I love a book that opens with a family tree. A family tree holds a lot of information, much of this being the hidden, often unspoken stories that go along with each name. In Coleman Hill, the reader gets well acquainted with the stories of the families of Celia Coleman and Lucy Grimes. Set mostly in New Jersey, in the community of Vauxhall, the lives of nine characters unfold over seventy years. It’s a novel that left me thinking about how one shares life experience with future generations, even when it involves pain and trauma. . . Written as a biomythography, Kim Coleman Foote weaves together stories she heard growing up with research (I can’t imagine the time spent looking into all that is involved in this novel), scavenger hunts into her great aunt’s house (which was inherited from Gra’ Coleman), and fiction. Family photographs are included in each chapter, one of which inspired the chapter The Pose. There is a telegram included in the book too, which I found so fascinating…. For an artifact to be held onto and make it into a family member’s novel generations later is phenomenal. In the chapter Why She Left Us, there are reflections interspersed among the story about why each child feels their mother left them. It is sad, but a brilliant way to depict how each family member views the loss of their mother. . . This book is so well written, including the author’s note and acknowledgement, which left me with a lot to reflect on. This was the book for @_completelybooked bookclub last month, and we were fortunate enough to discuss the book with the author. Thank you, Jordan for the best Tuesday of the month, every month. Needing to get away, he takes a job on the coast where he meets Lennie. She has also moved to the area for similar reasons. As the pair get to know each other, two young women go missing during a walk protesting violence against women near where Cole and Lennie live. As the investigation unfolds, Cole and Lennie discover they don’t really know each other very well at all and both have secrets of their own that they are hiding… 🚩 One of the Good Guys is a novel that highlights violence against women, gaslighting, coercive control and manipulative behaviour. The fear that women go through on a daily basis is also highlighted and the story also explores trauma and its effects. The impact of social media and the divisions it creates is also examined, particularly between men and women and patriarchal and misogynistic views. The narrative is very clever and the way certain aspects are written, so there are lots of twists and turns along the way. 🚩 I really loved One of the Good Guys and the fact that @thegillianflynn’s imprint is publishing this novel is a bonus for me! 🤩 This will give you an indication of just how dark and twisted this book may be! 😁 I would definitely recommend and it’s another book that I’d love to see get adapted for the screen! 🚩 Have you read One of the Good Guys?

Ham’s speculative horror is based on the life of a women as she adjusts to the shifting identity long after the Korean war. Yewon keeps seeing a hotel in her dreams. One with infinite keys and rooms where she is desperate to escape. In reality she still live with her mother and works at a convenience store. Her mother obsessively washes the bones of her ancestors in their bathtub, a tradition everyone does so not to forget those who were lost to war. Now her sister has recently experienced a tragedy, her brother is stationed near the North Korean border and her mother’s health is declining fast. Yewon’s dreams of this hotel are leading her towards an uncomfortable truth.⠀ ⠀ Told through Yewon’s experiences, the story was quite harrowing to read. There are many themes and perspectives of struggle explored which left Yewon confused as to what they meant. Through her dreams of this hotel, she realises the bigger picture and her role within her family.⠀ ⠀ At times this became quite emotional to read. the descriptions of war, the metaphors behind the day to day tasks her mother was carrying out, her explanations of why she was seeing so many despairing events occur, it felt like a build up to some things people can relate to gong through similar circumstances.⠀ ⠀ I would say this book is in the same vein as reading the works of Han Kang and Yoko Ogawa. It’s difficult enough moving to a new town and making new friends as a kid but then add in the fact that you’ve moved to a town that seems to be a portal for monsters to come through and kids are disappearing at an alarming rate and maybe this wasn’t the best place to move. Luck for New Rotterdam, Emrys is not easily spooked and is hunting for just this type of activity to update the Wiki. This story was creative with just the right touch of suspense and horror to keep you invested but not too much for younger readers who like this genre. I loved the way the tale unfolded and can’t wait to see what they face next. 4.5 ⭐️ Every book needs to come with its own playlist from now on. I demand it. The playlist for Butcher and Blackbird was utter perfection and fully threw you into the story. I also love that the playlist is the length of the book, chefs kiss really. After reading this book I feel like I have so many inside jokes with the two main characters. I would absolutely call them to watch the game on the weekend and force Rowan to barbecue for us and then the game turns into a Twilight marathon that the boys complain about but secretly love. Like I can see us all being friends and I think the way the author wrote this book really shows how well she knows her characters. I had to knock it from 5 because of the ice-cream. I still can’t eat ice-cream and it’s my favorite thing to eat. I’m so impressed by this book. It was hilarious and charming and everything I have ever wanted to read. It also perfectly sets up the next 2 books in the series AS WELL AS any spin offs the author might feel like doing. The jacket cover promises a “viral friends to lovers dark romantic comedy full of murder, chaos, and sizzling chemistry.” And the best part- it comes with a playlist!!!! There is a QR code in the book that has a premade Apple Music or Spotify playlist! What?!? I may have found my new favorite thing. Publication Date: Out Now! ˀ This or That Coffee or Tea (or neither) Cake or Pie Vanilla or Chocolate Kindle or Audiobook Sushi or Pizza 💭: This book definitely took me for a ride. 😂 It begins with Cole, one of the main characters living in the English countryside following the separation from his wife. We get a description of the relationship with his wife, from his pov, and I couldn’t help but sympathize for his situation. Shortly after his move he starts a new a woman named Lennie - or Lenora as he insists on calling her. You get the sense that he may be able to start moving on from his failed marriage afterall. Then the pov to his wife, and this is when the story gets really interesting, enter plot twist! I don’t want to say too much more because I’d hate to reveal any spoilers, but I can say that this book surprised me in many ways. For example, I didn’t think I’d enjoy it as much as I did. I also didn’t expect the story unravelling to where Cole’s truths are not everyone else’s truths - or even real! Happy Monday, friends ❄️ One of the Good Guys by Araminta Hall @AramintaHall Out now! Thank you @TheGillianFlynn and @ZandoProjects for this gifted copy and puzzle! I got this on Friday during a terrible snow storm so a big thank you to @UPS for your amazing dedication and bravery for heading down my long ass unplowed driveway! The timing was perfect! I just finished a really good book and was mood sniffing my way around my TBR and as soon as I opened this one up, I was immediately invested. Cole is newly separated from his wife, Mel. He’s living on the English coast where he enjoys early morning swims in the ocean and the pure quiet that can only exist outside of the city. There, he meets Lennie whom he calls Lenora because, according to Cole, it’s too lovely of a name to shorten. Lennie is an artist who’s prepping for an art exhibit a few months away. They hit it off and spend a little time together. Meanwhile, two young women walking to raise awareness for domestic violence go missing near where Cole lives. Soon, Cole and Lennie are involved in a possible murder investigation. The story is told in multiple POV’s along with mixed media exchanges and that’s what really gives this story its unique voice. Bonding with one characters POV is easy but reading opposing POV’s quickly changed my perspective and pushed some of my original opinions over into that murky gray area. There’s a lot to unpack in this story that hits upon many sensitive subjects; misogyny, violence against women, rape, miscarriage, IVF treatment. The different perspectives were both familiar and infuriating especially when it came to the mixed media exchanges. Women pushed to desperate measures isn’t unbelievable to me and because I don’t want to give away too much of the plot, I’ll leave it at that. 💬Are you a bird nerd, like me? Or do they freak you out? In all seriousness, this book is typically not the type of genres I read but my friend @fashionably.bookish pushed me out of my comfort zone and had me read it as part of my #12booksin12months challenge and I have to say I loved every bit of the serial killers killing other serial killers vibe! The book starts with a grocery list of trigger warnings and the one that really caught my eye was “accidental cannibalism.” I mean, I haven’t even read too many books with intentional cannibalism…but when I read the part, I laughed my head off! Who knew accidental cannibalism could be hilarious?! I also have to add this book heavily traumatized me with the ice cream scene and now ill never look at ice cream the same way again 😂😂 B&B is dark romance but really has plenty of horror elements if you have a stone cold heart like me. It also has plenty of spice for the romantics as well as comedic relief in between all the unaliving. I STRONGLY recommend the audiobook version!!! @therealjoearden and @akalucyrivers absolutely blew me away with their perfectly synchronized performance as the serial killer pair! I have listened to many audiobooks but this duo easily makes the crème de la crème of audiobook narrators. BOOK REVIEW!📚 . . I decided to request One of the Good Guys on Netgalley because of the simple fact that it’s being published by Gillian Flynn’s imprint. One of the Good Guys follows Cole as she moves to the countryside for a fresh start after separating from his wife. Readers follow along as he adjusts to his new life and meets an artist living next door all while getting tidbits of his previous life. Cole gives Joe Goldberg (from You by Caroline Kepnes) vibes. From the beginning of the novel, Cole comes off as genuine and caring. He’s one of the good guys, you know? However, as the novel progresses there’s a sense of wrongness with his inner monologue. Cole makes unsettling comments that are quickly glossed over that become more and more frequent until readers realize that he’s not being entirely truthful and forthcoming. Just as I was starting to get bored of Cole and his narrative, Hall switched to Cole’s ex-wife’s perspective. Mel’s chapters give readers a snapshot of their married life as the years progressed. Most of these moments centered around the couple trying to get pregnant through IVF. Mel’s chapters become difficult to read as her despair, frustration, and seeming lack of agency grows until it’s all consuming. Hall then presents readers the rest of the story through various different mediums: news articles, podcasts, Twitter threads, Reddit threads, etc. Each offering a different perspective on the story as it unfolds in real time. The opinions expressed in this section of the novel can be difficult to read at times. It’s supposed to be uncomfortable as Hall makes it obvious that the central theme of the novel is violence against women and the narrative around violence against women. The purpose of the novel is not the mystery, but its social commentary regarding how society views and treats women. The ending is a predictable rollercoaster that still triggered me. . ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ . . He wants to live simply - growing his own vegetables, trapping his own game - and to try to find peace as he recovers from the pain of his marriage ending. I won’t say much because I don’t want to ruin anything for anyone and the way the story unfolds is WILD, but I will say it was warped and weird and feminist AF and would be such a great book to discuss with a group because there are a lot of Things to Have Opinions About in it. One of the Good Guys by Araminta Hall After reading this author’s book Our Kind of Cruelty, I was so happy to receive an advance listening copy of One of the Good Guys. Most men think they are good guys, but as the blurb from the publisher asks, “Then why are women still afraid to walk home alone at night?” Good question. Cole is separated from his wife and has moved to a seaside town in England. Leonora has a tragic past and is living in a remote cottage there as well. Shortly after they meet and become friends two women traveling alone on an activist campaign go missing. Not only do Cole and Leonora not really know each other, but the reader doesn’t know who to believe. HOLY GASLIGHTING! I love novels where I have to figure out who isn’t telling the truth or has a a skewed version of the facts. Araminta Hall does this so well. Each person gives a very different perspective and you truly do have to find out who is one of the good guys. I liked getting the different point of views from Cole, Leonora and Mel. It was interesting and aggravating to read the fictional social media posts as they were typical of the responses that are made in real life circumstances. This is an excellent psychological thriller that highlights the power imbalances between men and women. The audiobook is expertly narrated by Elliot Fitzpatrick, Olivia Vinall and Helen Keeley. Not only does some of the story take place during Christmas/New Year, this thriller is unlike any other I have ever read with strong and important social justice messages that will leave you thinking about current events long after you finish the book. The first third of the book begins with Cole, who is now separated from his wife, Mel, and moved to the countryside. He meets his only neighbor, Lennie, and reminisces about his marriage to her. At about two-thirds, the narrative switches to Mel, and the final parts to several POVs of people online, podcasters, law enforcement etc. You begin to get a sense of who Cole, Mel and Lennie really are, but as the book goes on, your opinions of the main characters will definitely change. The most intriguing part of the book is that no character is perfect yet they all believe they’re doing the right thing. This will make for an excellent book club pick because this is a book that will garner varying opinions from readers as their take home message. If you enjoy books that discuss gender inequality, women’s rights, consent, media’s tentacles on current events, law enforcement, and even the limits of constitutional rights, this is the book for you. Just Finished... Monstrilio by Gerardo Sámano Córdova (2023) — 4.5 ⭐ This is such a well-written debut by Córdova that works on several levels. You could read it at face value as a literary horror of sorts, the first three parts told from the perspectives of mother, friend/lover/aunt, father, then with the fourth part where we're in the mind of Monstrilio himself. You could easily read it as a meditation on the nature of grief, as the main plot centers around Magos and Joseph, whose son Santiago dies young, and Magos cuts a bit of lung out of his body and it eventually grows into a little monster, our title character Monstrilio. How different people deal (or not deal) with grief and how it changes their logic and outlook on life. — But what jumped out to me most is the queer lens. How friend Lena is in love with mother Magos. How father Joseph after essentially running away from a life with his wife and Monstrilio, we see him in a gay partnership. And how Monstrilio is shoved into boxes galore of what his parents want him to be and look like and act like when in reality, he is just Monstrilio. His parents want him to be a reincarnation of their human son and Monstrilio is different, he has his own desires and cravings. He wants to eat raw flesh and he wants to be loved. — I couldn't put this book down. I think it's a great example of a story playing with genre and one that doesn't sacrifice compelling characters for an overall single message. If you've watched my stories, you'll already know that my blanket 2023 published books that I'm recommending to friends this year. Just putting it on my feed to solidify these choices. Throwback by Maurene Goo - which is a modern twist on the classic movie, Back to the Future. Sam needs to travel back in time to help her mom win Homecoming Queen, to help mend the rift between her mom and halmoni. Her Good Side by Rebekah Weatherspoon - YA fake dating, but it's more than that. It's about being comfortable with yourself, and expressing your needs/wants/desires/boundaries with family and friends. Just because you are good at something, doesn't mean you like it. Stars in Your Eyes by Kacen Callender - it's a queer, hate to love, grumpy sunshine, fake dating celebrity romance. I know, I just threw a bunch of tropes together, but believe me, it works. It's filled with emotion and gentle care as only the author can bring to you For those that enjoy romantasy, I would like to recommend A Power Unbound by Freya Marske, but to really enjoy the book, you'll need to start at the beginning of the trilogy, A Marvellous Light. Which is an achillean Edwardian era romance with magicians (and magic), a house party, and a quest. Book 2 is A Restless Truth, which takes place a few months after the first book concludes, and is a sapphic romance on an ocean liner, with a murder mystery. And if you have somehow read all six books, let me put Yulin Kuang's debut, How to End a Love Story on your radar. It's current release date is April 9, 2024. It's another romance that is filled with emotion. I don't think I would be able to do that book justice if I pare it down to its tropes. Just make sure it's on your radar. Take care of yourself, and check the content warnings for all the books.
