'We are many. We are in your book group; we hot -desk at the office with you, and live next door. You, perhaps, are one of us. We are witches. Just to say it is to challenge centuries of persecution. We are witches - and we remember... ' Much of women's history is a long silence. None more silent than the Scottish witch hunts and trials in 1622, a dark time is this country's history where six hundred women (and men) were accused of witchcraft and three hundred were executed. This beautifully written, thought provoking, upsetting, disturbing and exceptionally well-researched book takes you on a moving and tragic journey through the remote villages and rough coastlines of Scotland to find memorials and records of those women accused of witchcraft in the seventeenth century. From monoliths and mazes, forests to shorelines and rugged hills to pub gardens, Shaw has followed in the footsteps of these forgotten women and bought us stories of resilience, sisterhood, love, revenge, and, above all, bravery. Some of these stories are extremely graphic and very upsetting. What these women went through at the hands of those in power is nothing less than horrific and tragic. The torture and complete dehumanisation they went through at the hands of those men who were trying to prove their manhood is both shocking and disturbing. But this book has finally given these brave women a voice, women who appear to have been erased from history, this brilliant book has bought them back to life. For those interested in the witch trials and the history of witchcraft then this book is a must. The passion the author has for these women is evident in every line - it is a beautiful book of rememberance and I loved it ....🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 #bookreviewersofinstagram #bookreviewer #bookstagrammer #bookstagramuk #bookishlove #bookish #bookishlife #readerofnonfiction #readersofinstagram #reader #readinglist2024 #goodreads #fivestarread #mustread #springreads #mayreads #booklover #bookobsession #bookdragon #girlswhoreaddoitbetter #justagirlwholovestoread #scottishwitchtrials #nonfiction #readersgonnaread #bookwhore #booksbooksbooks #toreadistolive

Imagine sandals on your feet, a sword in your hand and the hot sun beating down on your helmet. Enter the world of Stephen Fry's best seller, Heroes. Few mere mortals have ever embarked on such brave and heart stirring adventures, overcome myriad monstrous perils, or outwitted scheming vengeful gods, quite as stylishly and triumphantly as Greek Heroes.. Having just finished listening to Mythos and falling in love with Stephen Fry's re-tellings, I was really excited to start this one, Heroes, the second in his trilogy. I grew up reading the tales of Perseus and the slaying of Medusa ( she was just misunderstood) , the beautiful Atalanta, the swift footed virgin who devoted herself to Artemis, the tales of the trials of Heracles, the wily Oedipus and the riddle of the sphinx and finally the tale of Jason and his Argonauts, my favourite being the tale of the devious Medea. I was really excited to read a new retelling from one of my favourite people. And.....honestly?? I have been left feeling very disappointed, both in the retellings and with Fry's narration. Whereas in Mythos he was very upbeat in his storytelling and his passion for the subject evident, in this one the passion and excitement was considerably lacking. It was just a little to tedious, monotonous and a tad too long. It all felt a little bland, unexciting and lacking the adventure I found in Mythos. However, I did enjoy his knowledge and his explanations of Greek words and traditions that are still in use today and still affect our everyday lives. And, as usual, his extensive research is second to none and if you are new to Greek myth then these retellings are probably a good place to start but unfortunately it just didn't thrill me as much as Mythos did. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for Troy ....🌟🌟🌟 #bookreviewersofinstagram #bookreviewer #bookreviewers #readersofinstagram #reader #readingtime📖 #readinggirl #bookish #bookishlife #bookishlove #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #bookstagramuk #readinglist2024 #justagirlwholovestoread #justagirlwholovesbooks #bookobsessed #booklover #greekmythology #greekmyth #bookwormlife #bookworm #readersgonnaread #bookdragon #fictionlover #readeroffiction

The divine comedy by Dante Alighieri The divine comedy is considered to be one of the world's greatest works of literature. The poetry is simple, but it builds and builds. 1770. Delphine lives in the shadows of London; a secret, vibrant world of smugglers, courtesans and small rebellions. Four years ago she escaped enslavement at a personal cost. Now she must help her brother Vincent do the same. When Britain's highest court fails to administer justice for Vincent, little rebellions are no longer enough. What's needed is a big, explosive plot - one that will strike at the transatlantic slave trade. Can one woman, one fuse and one match take down an empire? Set in London in the 1770's amongst its brothels, it's ports and its slums, this brilliantly written story is a reimagining of the gunpowder plot that had taken place over a hundred years before and questions how far we are willing to go for freedom. This tale highlights the plight of all those bought to Britain as slaves- the cruelty they experienced, the humiliation, the torture and the complete dehumanisation suffered at the hands of their owners. This is a book that will anger you, upset you and frustrate you at the injustice and inequality suffered by those enslaved. There were parts that had me crying, parts that had me shouting out in anger, but in the midst of all this angst and misery are stories of hope, bravery, love and friendship, and how, with the help and support of others we can overcome anything. A powerful and poignant story, tenderly and beautifully written- Elle Machray is a master storyteller who has bought to life a time in our history that was turbulent, tragic and horrific. I was enthralled from start to finish 🌟🌟🌟🌟 #bookreviewersofinstagram #bookreviewer #bookstagramuk #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #readersofinstagram #reader #bookish #bookishlife #bookobsessed #bookdragon #booklover #readinglist2024 #historicalfictionlover #historicalfiction #bookwhore #booknerd #bookworm #readersgonnaread #goodreads #mayreads #springreads #justagirlwholovestoread #justagirlwholovesherbooks #fictionlover #mustread #girlswhoreaddoitbetter #fictionreader

41/100 #readinglist2024 📖 : A Good Girl's Guide To Murder ✏️ : "Ini tidak adil! ✏️ : Final rate ⭐️3! Siap mendengarkan pendapat teman-teman di diskusi nanti🫡🔥. #readbyamanda #bookstagram #bookrecommendations #agoodgirlsguidetomurder

Book #21: “Warnings Unheeded: Twin Tragedies at Fairchild Air Force Base” by Andy Brown. Every page of this book is terrifying, sad, and angering. Probably hits harder since this is a local tale, taking place at an AFB I frequented as a child with my dad and where a number of friends currently work. Written by the security forces officer who killed the mass shooter in 1994 at the Fairchild AFB hospital, this book covers the events leading to not only that situation, but also the crash of a B-52 only four days later. It is frustrating to read this and find out the numerous times both of these tragedies could’ve easily been averted. For the shooting, the asshole who did it was seen multiple times by mental health professionals and was even committed for a time. It was remarked multiple times that the man was dangerous and people were scared by him, but the bureaucracy churned on. The most galling one was from a commanding officer who didn’t want to discharge the shooter because of all the money they just invested in training him. For the crash, it was a situation of the ol’ boys network protecting a hot dog pilot who pushed the limits. That storyline gets less attention than the first one, but that’s understandable since it is more cut and dried. I found it fascinating that the last bit of the book focused on the author’s handling of the trauma of what he did. People called him a hero when he admits that he showed up at the end and shot one guy. It also ties into his frustration of trying to get his own mental health right after and almost losing his career because of the stigma of it. I had some issues with his take on guns and mental health in the afterword, but they were minor and didn’t take away from an otherwise compelling book. There is a large part of the book covering the shooting in detail I will say is hard to read. It is important to get all the information of the victims so the main character is not the asshole killer. I recommend this book, especially for locals, but I understand why it would upset people. I urge caution. #ReadingList2024 #Book #AmazonPurchase #LocalHistory

Entangled life by Dr. Merlin Sheldrake 📖🍄 Despite its importance in the natural world, mycology is one of biology's least-recognized fields. Although we are well aware of the fruiting bodies of fungi (mushrooms), most fungi live out of sight. Fungi are the major decomposers of organic material in many ecosystems. They play a significant role in nutrient cycling.  'Entangled Life' introduces the reader to the world of fungi. It has to be noted that the concept of the 'woodwide web' is fascinating yet overstated in this book. But the messages are clear. Dr. Sheldrake describes how these amazing organisms, and our interactions with them, are altering our understanding of how life functions. #merlinsheldrake #entangledlife #fungi #mycology #biology #symbiosis #booklovers #bookstagram #bookaddict #readinglist2024 #myreadinglis

Book No. 30 - The Devil & Sherlock Holmes: Tales of Murder, Madness, and Obsession by David Grann This book is for my fellow true folks out there. In fact, if you like the podcast Criminal, this book is right up your alley. It’s pretty true to the title and includes several stories of murder, organized crime, unsolved mysteries, and totally weird (and often life-threatening) obsessions. I enjoyed the variety of stories but found myself getting kind of bored during the section on organized crime. But that’s also just not something that I find interesting. Not on my list of favorites, but still an interesting read. And I like the way that Grann writes, so that helps. 😊 #readallthebooks #readinglist2024 #readmorebooks #readwithme #bookstagram #nonfictionbooks

Even before picking up this book from a local secondhand bookshop, I knew about it. Not from people reading it and giving their opinion on the story, but whether it was even intended to be published. Whether it was a first draft, a sequel, a cash grab. Maybe all of that is true. Maybe it’s just another weird chapter in the fervour surrounding To Kill a Mockingbird. To be honest, I’m just looking forward to some of the hard truths that so many readers blatantly ignored from TKaM. ''Mary's voice grows louder, one long note that trembles and rises; she is burning, she is a woman on the rack, she is a woman in labour, she is a queen who has lost her crown, she is a witch ...' The story of Mary Queen of Scots is one that is familiar to most of us. A tragic tale of a Scottish woman executed by her own cousin to protect the English throne. The number of women beheaded or hanged during some of the most turbulent times in history is so many that over the years they have lost their identity and just become another number. This brilliantly written, thoughtful, poignant, evocative and vivid novel uses fiction to bring one of these women, Mary, to life...to give her a voice. Covering the year she spent as a prisoner along with four of her waiting women on the island of Lochleven in Perth, this story is a complete work of fiction and reimaginings but inspired by real people and real events. Much of what we know about Mary and her life is really only seen through the eyes of the men she married but this highly imaginative and absorbing tale banishes these men to the back seat and finally brings her to the forefront of her own story and shows her for the powerful, strong and resilient woman that she was. This is a book about women- about their survival- about power, fear, revenge and love. A work of historical fiction but with the tensions of a thriller I cannot recommend it enough. The history doesn't change. We all know what end she meets but that doesn't stop you rooting for her and wanting her to escape and live a long and happy life. Fans of historical fiction who especially enjoy the Tudor period will love this. It's a beautiful little story ..🌟🌟🌟🌟 #bookreviewersofinstagram #bookreviewer #bookstagrammer #bookstagramuk #bookish #bookishlife #booksbooksbooks #readersofinstagram #reader #readinglist2024 #readerlife #bookdragon #bookwhore #bookobsessed #bookobsession #booksniffer #justagirlwholovestoread #girlswhoreaddoitbetter #historicalfiction #historicalfictionlover #fictionlover #mustread #springreads #mayreads #bookwormlife #booknerd #readersgonnaread #floracarr #tudorhistory

“Nuclear War: A Scenario” is exactly what it sounds like — a 300-page exploration of WWIII’s first hour. One could find fault with reading any speculative account that ends the world so quickly and with such brutal annihilation, but Annie Jacobson takes us a greater distance. After a brief history of how the world’s superpowers created WMD stockpiles, she takes us through the details about how a thermonuclear missile would make its way to Washington, D.C., how the nation’s military would maneuver, and how the president is expected to make decisions with humanity’s survival in the balance. This section of the book is its strongest — Jacobson has spent years working with sources and combing through declassified records to tell us how this would all go down … … and when it *does* start going down, the narrative is bogged down by details that just don’t matter. We know how this ends. The book concludes with a look months, years and then millennia down the road to see how Earth recovers. These are fascinating passages that confirm what Tina Turner sang about: The living would envy the dead. #2024books #readinglist2024 #goodreads #amreading #books #bookaddict #booknerd #bookstagram #reading #readinglist #readingchallenge #bookworm #bookblogger #bookreviews

‘The greek word for return is “nostos”. “Algos” means suffering. So nostalgia is the suffering caused by an unappeased yearning to return.’ While returning to their Czech homeland, a man and a woman do not experience the joyful return one might perhaps imagine. I’ve been meaning to read something by Kundera for a long time. Kundera combines a more philosophical meditation on memory and the experience of emigration with the daily encounters and emotions of people’s lives. This is a short (and very readable) book - a good one to pick up if you’re short on time but keen to read good lit. #springreading #readinglist2024 #milankundera #bookstagram #literaturelover

‘Illusion is the most tenacious weed in the collective consciousness,’ Antonio Gramsci wrote in 1921. ‘History teaches but it has no pupils.’ The lines we draw, the fences we build and the borders we enforce are illusions. They are not real, but they give birth to violent consequences, and have become a part of the collective consciousness.’  @suchitravijayan ‘Midnight’s Borders, A People’s History of Modern India’ bears stories of our borderlands, its grave past, and its people in the present pondering a future in a time when history is rewritten in textbooks and on social media. Her book, her journey is heartbreaking, urgent, inspiring and accessible through carefully documented ‘stories and memories that sometimes get buried in unmarked graves.’ Our country is diverse, but leaders fail to serve us equally, often resorting to divide-and-rule tactics; a preamble of most, if not all parties running the state, richly exhibited in the current elections with mud-slinging and pointless banter. The book ‘is a museum of forgotten stories that critique a state complicit in silence, violence and erasure.’ Borders have been drawn and re-drawn based on the political climate, biased intentions and a high-handedness of what is right or wrong, rarely based on what people on the ground require. ‘For some, simply moving from one part of the home to another means crossing an international border. To govern territories, one must know them. But can one govern knowing just the territory, and not its people?’  ‘Midnight’s Borders’ stories have left me wondering about these fences we build around us. What are we trying to hold within them? In a time of raging global warming, senseless wars and a plea for better judgment - fences close our minds to examining stories that need understanding.  What use are these fences if we refuse to accept fringe narratives, the debris of colonial history and the complex interplay of land, people and politics? Lines drawn, to rule and force and alienate without creating spaces of collective unity and mutual benefit. Is it then safe to presume that these invented boundaries validate our place and role in an economy of hate? #ReadingList2024

Book #20: “Drunk” by Edward Slingerland. My girlfriend bought this for me and has been apologizing for it as I read it. Definitely not bad, it’s academic. The title promises fun and instead it is a term paper. This book tracks the development of human civilization via intoxicants. Every society has one and rituals around it. Not much more to describe beyond that. You’d have to read it to get more. Like I said, interesting, but not thrilling. I did appreciate that the author explored all facets of drink as best they could, good and bad. They never take a stance, just that alcohol has its place everywhere. #ReadingList2024 #Book #LocalSale #Beer #Wine #Liquor

Vastly different to autobiographies, whereby the author seeks to recollect their own personal history, biographies are written by a third party who, through years of academic study, has become a veritable expert in the field. Thomas Hardy had his second wife, Florence, write his biography before anyone else could. Any remnants of Hardy’s journals and personal notes which hadn’t been destroyed, Florence promptly burned following his death. Poet and author Phillip Larkin followed suit and had his diaries destroyed by a shredder. Sylvia Plath’s diary was burned by Ted Hughes. While the moral conundrum of biographies endures, the creative and intellectual possibilities are endless. Unauthorised biographies, well, they’re an entirely different kettle of fish. We’ve curated a selection of the best biographies of all time. Who knows, you might be reading the inspiration behind the next biggest Oscar winner. ✍️ @peachysas 📷 Little Women (2018) 🔗 Article at link in bio • • • #reading #readinglist #biographies #summerreading #readinglist2024

RELEASE DAY! ”How do these biologically and imaginatively intimate poems manage to weave reckonings with whiteness, queer love across borders, the loss of a beloved mother, human history and deep time, climate collapse, migration, and the end of empire with the worlds of wings, fins, and paws of our animal kin? I don’t know, but I’ll be studying to learn from the brilliant leaps and sonically stitched imagery of these haunting, beautiful poems that stun into blazes of feeling and thought. In their traverse of worlds and speakers and species, we learn the poetic magic of empathy, of metaphor, of seeing deeply into other beings and into our own animal bodies. Sarah Giragosian has written poems we need in this moment of precarious cruelty and persistent wonder. —Anne Haven McDonnell, author of Breath on a Coal, winner of the Halcyon Prize (2022) Available now ($18) at our website (www.middlecreekpublishing.com) or on Amazon.com. #ecopoetry #nypoet #newyorkpoet #corningny #corningnewyork #universityatalbany #universityatalbanystateuniversityofnewyork #wonder #animalkin #ouranimalkin #otherthanhumankin #kindom #love #queer #queerlove #lovepoem #ecology #humanecology #awardwinningpoetry #readinglist2024 #newpoetry

What has been ur favorite read of April❓ and if u haven’t been reading, what’s something exciting u did do❓😊 • • • It’s certainly been a month. Highs and lows. Very all over the place. But somehow my reading popped off???😅 and that’s on ✨finals coping mechanisms✨ I’m done for now and will be studying for my other huge test (bcuz yay… summer school🫠) but hopefully I’ll be able to be a little more present🤍 I hope u all r doing well and hanging in there with April/May being pretty busy months🤍 (or at least they always r for my family lol) I’ll continue chipping away at book reviews, but at this point I’ve accepted I won’t get to everything 😵‍💫 so if u want to chat about a specific book, let me know lol🤭 I will say, I LOVED the Legend series, but choosing a fav read for this month was so hard! I kept going between that and As the Lemon Trees Grow, and although for enjoyment reasons I went with Legend, I strongly believe everyone should read the Lemon Trees. It was incredible and poignant in a way critical to the current situation. Read this book. If my reviews mean anything to u, add this high on ur TBR (mental health and triggers should be considered tho too) • • • #aprilreads #readinglist2024 #libraryaudiobook #librarylove #aslongasthelemontreesgrow #redwhiteandroyalblue #daindrethsassassin #theteadragonsociety #thedeepbook #shattermeseries

Hey look, I finally read something! 🥲 A rare case where I say the movie is better! While the actual tale of The Princess Bride is near identical, the "meta" aspect within the book bothered me so much more than the film. I dislike the persona the author took on (I actually had to google him to make sure he wasn't as much of a jerk as he came off as!). #readinglist2024 #courtneyreads2024

Dance to the tune of life by Dr. Denis Noble Recent experimental evidence in a wide range of fields shows that Modern Synthesis (gene-centered theory of evolution) has been very productive, but it needs to be complemented by an integrative approach that recognizes casuality at multiple levels. For instance, epigenetic inheretance and symbiogenesis show that a gene-centered view of evolution is clearly incomplete. In this book, Dr. Dennis Noble proposes a more integrative theory of evolution, the Biological Relativity which is mind-blowing and completely new view of life! There are things we never question, such as the Central Dogma. Maybe it is time to reformulate the role of genes. After all, genetic materials only provide a single piece of information. #dancetothetuneoflife #evolution #modernsynthesis #neodarwinism #dennisnoble #biologicalrelativity #biology #originoflife #booklovers #mustread #bookstagram #bookaddict #readinglist2024 #myreadinglist

Restless Dolly Maunder by Kate Grenville. I wasn’t expecting to enjoy this as much as I did. A sad story of a woman growing up and wanting something more.

Book No. 29 - Midnight at the Blackbird Cafe by Heather Webber For the April prompt for the #buzzwordreadingchallenge (relating to wild), I read this book in audiobook format. I listened to a podcast where it was mentioned and thought it sounded cute. A nice, cozy read. For the first couple of hours I thought that it had very witchy vibes and I was into it. It’s the story of Anna Kate who returns to her hometown to handle the estate of her recently deceased grandmother. There’s lots of family drama and a little but of magic centered around the famous pie that Anna Kate’s grandmother served at her cafe. Anna Kate gets wrapped up in the community and works out her own family issues over the course of the book. It was a perfectly fine read and I can see it being pretty popular, but it just wasn’t for me. I felt like there wasn’t much rising action and almost no climax to the story. It just kind of puttered along for me. If you’re more into fast-paced novels with twists and turns throughout, this one might not be for you. If you just want to escape for a while to a perfectly pleasant small town, maybe give it a shot. #readallthebooks #readinglist2024 #readwithme #readmorebooks #bookstagram #readingchallenge #audiobook

April Reading Wrapup •~🦋☁️~• This is my first time doing a Wrapup post and I'm really excited to share the details of the books that I read on April with you guys! I read 6 books last month and among them two were ebooks that were Netgalley Arcs. Overall, the month was really good with two five-star reads and three four-star reads. The only book that was a bit disappointing was "One Hundred Years of Solitude" but still I liked the experience of reading it. I'm actually glad to have read two historical fictions, a women's fiction, an espionage thriller, a mystery, and a classic. Yet, I feel disappointed for not including a non-fiction, so I have decided to add more non fiction books to my May reading. I have already started my first book of May and have high expectations of the same. Hope you guys too have a good month ahead! 💭 How many books did you read on April? Which was your favorite book? . . . . . . . . . . Book No. 28 - What Feasts at Night by T. Kingfisher The first of several book posts that I need to make today, I read this for the @storyonthesquare April Pop-Up bookclub. This is the sequel to What Moves the Dead, a book that we previously read in our horror bookclub. In this book we catch back up with Alex Easton following their terrifying experience at Usher Manor. They find themselves back at their family hunting lodge in search of peace. Instead, they and everyone around them are haunted by the moroi: a female entity who sits on your chest at night and suffocates you. More terror, this time heavily psychological in its themes. This is another quick read by Kingfisher. Give it an afternoon of your time. #readallthebooks #readinglist2024 #readwithme #bookstagram #readmorebooks #bookclubbook #fiction #horrorbooks

Total feel-good, one-night read ❤️ You know when you have a friend who asks you for a book that will make them smile cos they’re going through a rough patch or just because they don’t want something too heavy right now? Recommend The Next Big Thing - the debut small town rom com from James Colley. Colley is a comedy writer for TV (think Gruen, Question Everything, The Weekly with Charlie Pickering) and it shows. This book is funny, charming, taking the piss at the same time as being totally heartfelt. Some reviews clock it as a little light on - I disagree. Colley weaves in some sharp commentary on ‘Australian-ness’, the politics and economics of small towns, the way to get a rise out of Australian media, what it means to belong, to stay, to leave. Plus it’s got a big old love story at its heart. And a great cast. Make the movie already. Fans of @clarefletcherwriter, oddball couples, small town fiascos and a chuckle will love this one. I get to speak with James, along with the (also big hearted romance gem) @littleredwrites and Agony Aunt extraordinaire for a special recording of @thefirsttimepod at @sydwritersfest and I’m SO looking forward to it. 'He is not some unknown face, some omniscient and omnipresent being mean to judge and punish. He is not an empty threat. He is real. He is flesh. He can hurt me. But at least I know that ...' At just over 200 pages, this should have been a relatively quick read for me but for some reason it seems to have taken me ages to finish it. The synopsis sounded brilliant, it keeps popping up on all the book accounts I follow and reviewers have penned it as a 'great horror story that will scare and tantalise'. The cover is stunning so I decided to give it a go..And....well, it was OK but if I'm honest it wasn't as good as I expected it to be. The story itself was quite interesting and the author cleverly explores how folklore, traditions and fears of old can transcend through the generations but I don't feel the cult aspects of the story were explored enough - it was constantly hinted at but not written about as in depth as it could have been - it's a subject matter that could have bought a lot more substance to the story. I think the same applies to Leah's story as well. Her story is actually a very tragic and upsetting tale, but considering it was one of the main plot twists it feels just thrown in at the end - as if the author was in a rush to just bring everything together as quickly as possible. Described as a fantasy horror, I'm afraid this book didn't scare or chill me at all and although the subject matter was very dark it could have been and deserved to be a lot darker. It read almost like a YA novel to me which isn't a genre I enjoy reading - it just lacked any real depth or substance and I have been, again, lured in by a beautiful cover .... 2.5 stars from me ....🌟🌟.5 #bookstagramuk #bookstagrammer #bookreviewersofinstagram #bookreviewer #bookish #bookishlife #readersofinstagram #reader #readinglist2024 #reading #bookobsession #bookobsessed #booklover #bookwhore #bookdragon #readeroffiction #fictionlover #disappointingread #girlswhoreaddoitbetter #justagirlwholovestoread #readersgonnaread #aprilreads #springreads #booknerd #bookwormlife #bookworm #girlswhoread #bookshelves #booksbooksbooks
