Often when I’m fatigued I find it tricky to know what to do with myself. Today, me and my Mum made these tables so that at a glance I can easily pick something to do. The grid format is easier for me than trying to read a list and we’ve separated them into 3 categories of ´Home Days’, ‘Tired/Painful Days’ and ´Time With The Family’. My #longcovid tip today is something my Mum thought of when she saw me playing on the Xbox one day.. Some days (like today) my arms hurt so much that I can’t do everyday things.. even eating with cutlery can be too painful. My arms ache and feel SO heavy 🥹 It’s a simple idea, but putting pillows under your arms when you’re playing means that you only have to move your fingers rather than focusing on holding the controller and keeping your arms up! Showering used to be something I took for granted but now I can only shower when I have enough energy. Showering uses energy in 2 ways… standing up (exhausting!) AND holding my arms up and washing my hair (so tiring!) 🚿 My top tip is to buy a shower stool.. It’s really helped me! This month there’s been a few improvements again. *I’m not having to stop and rest every single afternoon anymore. *I’ve started to practice Callanetics (like Pilates) again 2/3 times a week. *I’ve got back going with my coaching course after a few months on hold. *I’ve been out on a few evenings with no ill effects. *I’ve had an occasional alcoholic drink (just one at a time) *And the biggest improvement of all has been introducing meat back into my diet…albeit with an anti-histamine tablet chaser immediately after eating. Bella is doing really well at uni…getting Firsts in all her tests, working six hour evening shifts twice a week and generally feeling really well (apart from her usual gastro and joint issues). I’ve had a cold, which wiped me out for a week…but apart from that all’s been good. I’ve written a specific post about colds and flu if you’ve not already seen it. I’ve still got a lot going on with my mum…and that’s pretty much 24/7…there’s not much I can do about that to be honest. But James and I have instigated a slight change…every weekend for the past 12 months we have seen mum on a Saturday and then on a Sunday J would have to go see his Dad (who is also ill). We were both feeling pretty wiped out with it all, for the last ten years we have had to care for ill parents…and it’s just felt as though we don’t actually ever get a weekend off unless we are on holiday. Anyway our plan moving forward is for J to go to his Dads on a Saturday after we’ve been at mums…we tried it this week and it was bliss just to have a Sunday with no commitments. So hopefully we can manage this moving forward. This is my second Christmas season with Long Covid. As a mom who really enjoys holidays with my kids, it’s a balancing act between creating holiday magic, self care, family, friends and my faith. I wanted to share some tips to think about when managing a chronic illness during the holidays and avoid a flare come January: 🌲 Prioritize a few celebrations &/or traditions; spreading them out to allow rest. 🌲 Online shop & keep presents minimal but special. 🌲 Let kids help decorate -less is more 🌲 Keep alcohol and sugar to a minimum - focus on protein! 🌲 Get good nights sleep 🌲 Schedule in self care to de-stress 🌲 Read Bible, meditate, keep spiritual cup full 🙏🏼 🌲 Save spoons to have quality time individually with each child if possible, even if it’s to read a book, play a game or watch their favorite show. 🌲 Practice having boundaries or say no to things that will cause you to ‘push through’ 🌲 Give yourself grace. CALM 🔯 The Daily Calm by Tamara Levitt 🔯 The Daily Trip by Jeff Warren I’ve used the premium version for a year and loved it, would listen to these 2 meditations above everyday. 3. ENVOL 🔯 beautiful binaural beats, sound visualisations, meditations I’ve used the premium version for a month and would highly recommend, but currently I use the free version which gives you access to 3 different tracks daily 4. SPOTIFY 🔯 music, binaural beats, sleep and yoga tracks, and more! I pay for the premium version, I love it! 5. Celebrated my COVID anniversary with a 16-mile hike and 5,000 feet elevation gain. This feels like such a miracle, considering I’ve been exercise intolerant for the past year. For the first half of 2023 (and especially after a bad relapse in March), I doubted I’d ever do big hikes again. I didn’t seriously think about trying until July, when I finally got on some medication that helped control my symptoms. I still have some breakthrough symptoms (sore throat, brain fog, dizziness, racing heart). But this illness no longer seems hopeless. If you’re experiencing exercise intolerance, a few encouraging thoughts: 1- There is some really dismal reporting in the media about long COVID and how a lot of people don’t get better. But keep in mind, most people are also NOT being properly treated. Our medical system really pushes “symptom management” and “watchful waiting.” You may need to go outside the medical establishment to get the help you need. I know it’s hard when you’re tired and heartbroken. But keep pushing! Don’t settle. 2- Recovery isn’t a straight line. It’s super normal for symptoms to wax, wane, and change over time. Learn to see exacerbations as temporary setbacks and a normal part of the process. Get really good at riding the tides of this post-viral shit. 3- Life isn’t all about being a perfect patient who is constantly resting. Do listen to your body and take it slow as you increase your activity level. But don’t beat yourself up for taking the occasional risk or having a little purely hedonistic fun. When I was in my long covid recovery, I was DYING for someone to help me get back to running safely and sanely. Even though I was starting to feel better, any kind of exercise gave me heart palpitations for hours. And then the next day, I’d have trouble keeping my eyes open at work and go to bed at 6 pm. I’d probably have paid $1000 a month for covid-aware personal trainer! But they didn’t seem to exist. What helped: reading stories from other runners with long covid. They weren’t trainers or exercise physiologists, but they understood what I was going through. And it gave me hope that so many of them had gotten through it. I like these boxes from @clasohlsonnorge (I’m sure there are similar on amazon too). These keeps my fruits, veggies and berries fresh for days! Makes snacking and meal prepping easier. Preparation for meals with washing and cutting the food can be done over multiple days as well which is great when you struggle with fatigue. I often make salads for days and put in the big box. The boxes has a drainage system so you can rinse your product and store it right away. It’s been 3.5 years since I first got covid (I’ve had it at least 3 times now) and then developed Long Covid. It’s been a rollercoaster of a journey towards recovery and I genuinely believe I have yoga to thank for this. Since studying to become a yoga instructor and learning more about the nervous system in particular, I now understand how and it goes beyond exercise (which was my initial reason for taking up yoga!). Over the coming weeks, I will outline how in more detail, linking it to current understanding about Long covid and the science behind how yoga can help. My name is Gait & I am a yoga instructor. I belive yoga can be a powerful tool to aid transformation and healing. That is because it is a holistic practise encompassing body, mind and breath. I believe yoga has been instrumental in my own healing journey with Long Covid and it was this reason that led me to become an instructor. Not only did I want to learn more about how yoga was helping, but I wanted to eventually pass this benefit on to others who may be suffering from Long Covid or other chronic illness. So I have set up this new Instagram profile to share my healing journey and pass on tips that I have learned. I’m hoping these could help anyone suffering from illness or even stress and burnout, not just those with Long Covid. Some are based on my own experience and some are based on research evidence and current findings around Long Covid and the ways which yoga has been used as a complementary therapy for various illnesses and mental wellbeing. Am I totally healed and back to where I was before Long Covid? No. Would I want to go back to the life I had before Long Covid 3 years ago? Not really! Of course there are elements that I miss and still grieve for like loss of job, steady income and even identity. Also the ability to do some of the physical activities I would have been able to do easily with my kids before, like dropping the kids off at school everyday or going for a bike ride. But I am also genuinely more content now than I have been in a long time, even before covid. And I’m still hopeful I will get even better as I have already made vast improvement from where I was just 6 months ago when I would spend weeks bedbound, unable to do basic activities and suffering from debilitating pain. Exercise does not automatically lead to an energy crash anymore and my body is even learning to do new things like doing a headstand! Positive changes 🌸✨ Finally, I started to accept my celiac diagnosis emotionally and stopped fighting it like a little angry child. 🏳️ I really hated that I was forced to change so much by it. I was really struggling with it as it has such a huge impact/restriction on my whole life. 😢 Now, that I surrendered I try to see it as a chance to change my life for the better, revealing a more authentic version of myself. To get into my own strength and stand up for myself. 🍀✨ Also, there was an idea coming up about how to use it in my work life. If it evolves into a real possibility I will tell you more about it 🤗❤️ This week, I introduced some protein powder to help my body until I can eat more protein sources. 💪 I really had a huge lack in proteins throughout the last year due to the intolerances and fears. Also increased my fat intake and am now very slowly introducing some lactose-free cheese 🧀 That's a lot when dealing with an eating disorder/food anxiety 🙈 The new dietitian gives me some compassionate guidance. 🙏 I feel that working on my inner childhood wounds & trauma, focusing on relaxation, taking supplements, the new dietitian and being able to go outside more really improves my health. 🌸 It's still very lonely though. 🥺 It's still a looong way to go but finally I feel I am on the right track and that things actually move forward. 🍀✨🙏 What were your recent positive changes you experienced? 3 hours at the lake 🌊🏖️🤗 It was such a joyful experience to finally be at the lake again 🍀✨ Two friends took me there by car, one even put me on a skateboard, so I could be pushed and didn't have to walk/move. It saved some energy 🔋Really nice idea! 🛹 It was also some excitement for my brain which is usually deprived of everything by just staring at the screen or at the wall in my home. I enjoyed it so much and didn't want to leave... The beach is my happy place ❤️ but I had to take care of myself. I did need to sleep afterwards 😴 and my body did hurt.😣 Also, I had to rest for the next whole day. Are you always aware of what you need? 😊 I just realized how much I really would need a break/vacation, someone who would cook for me and care for me, time to relax, some tender touch, some wellness and joy. 🧖‍♀️🌊😌 Through the whole year, I didn't allow myself to get that because I was constantly pushing myself so hard to get healthy again by going to many doctors, educating myself on treatments, just learning to ask for help, not having anyone to cuddle/touch. 🚧 I was very impatient, afraid and angry, wanted to work again as soon as possible and forced my will onto life and my body. Spoiler: It didn't work out 🤪🙈 So now, I surrender to the current state that I am in with all the symptoms that I still have and try to find trust and relaxation, calmness and enjoyment within that. Enjoy every bite of a meal, enjoy lying on my couch with music, enjoy the sunshine and wind, enjoy touching my skin, enjoy nice smells, enjoy looking at nature, etc. Letting go of all the wishes to be active. Impatience 😒 It really annoys me so much that my body still keeps me isolated and laying down so much. I want to go out, I want to meet people, I want to enjoy the summer, I want to work, I want to start living again. 🍀✨ I still can't figure out why my big toe has been swollen for 2 months 🧐😤 nothing I tried helped to cure it. Being stuck while feeling the need to move/expand again. Every few months a new symptom shows up. 🤦🏻‍♀️ When you don't understand what your body is trying to tell you. 💙 EMOTIONAL PROCESSING This is a new skill I’m learning. And I’d argue it is one of the most important things to do in your life to live a healthy and happy life. This doesn’t mean not feeling negative emotions. For most of my life I didn’t know what to do with negative emotions. I think a lot of us are taught to push them down or away, or ignore them by distraction. Instead I have been working on processing them. My psychologist taught me a technique which I’ll share: 👉When a negative feeling arises, the first step is to breathe and feel into your body. Where is this feeling? What sensations are you feeling in your body? Is it tension in the stomach, is it nausea in the tummy, is it a blocked feeling in the throat? Next step is to identify the emotion. Is it anxiety, anger, grief, worry, rejection, loneliness etc. see the emotional wheel on the 2nd slide to help identify your emotions. It could be several. Once you identify what the emotion is and where it is in your body, see if you can then allow space for it. Let it be there. Breathe into it. You may feel like you want to place your hands on the area where it is. Sometimes I rub the area, or tap it. Spend some time sitting with it and breathing into it, allowing you to feel it and to process it. I find it will then dissipate and I sometimes imagine it then melting away, or flowing out of my body. 👉Another technique you might find helpful is EFT. I use this to help process my emotions too. EFT stands for Emotional Freedom Technique and is also known as tapping. There is actually some good research out there proving it’s effectiveness. Systematic reviews have identified its efficacy for physiological and psychological symptoms. There are plenty of resources out there to teach you how to do tapping yourself - it is actually quite simple. You can do it anywhere, and you don’t need any tools. Search on YouTube, or do a 2 week free trial of the app: The Tapping Solution. I may do another post on EFT in more detail soon. But I highly encourage you to explore it as another tool to add to your toolkit to help you through life and especially navigate through illness or hardship.

Final blood tests done! 🍀🌺 Got tested on diabetes and a last coeliac blood test was done. Will get the results in the next weeks. As well as the allergy test results. In German, we say 'I am drawing three crosses' when finishing something exhausting. Today, it's 3 flowers instead 🌺 The last few months were horrible and I am very grateful for the friends and my mum who helped me to survive as much as they could.
