✨Mini Reviews✨ I said I’d review every book I read this year and I am…terribly behind schedule. But it’s not like these posts do well anyway so here we go 🤪 The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 Loved this one! Read it for @bookclubdinostar and while there’s some storylines I felt weren’t tied up perfectly, the writing was beautiful, the characters were interesting, and the whole concept was really engaging. S/o to my book club for making me lower my rating 🤣 Sorrow and Bliss by Meg Mason ⭐️⭐️⭐️ This was…underwhelming. I hated the main character and the way mental health is portrayed/used felt a bit icky at times. I genuinely don’t remember the bulk of it. It read quickly but I will not be thinking about it much. Games and Rituals by Katherine Heiny 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 One of my favourite authors! This felt like the grown up version of her last collection that quite literally changed my life (made me want to do my MSc and PhD in creative writing!!). Great characters and funny, heartbreaking stories. Highly recommend! Notes on a Nervous Planet by Matt Haig ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Good exploration of social media/internet/society. Nothing super new or revelatory but written with Haig’s signature humour and wit. It felt refreshing to read this. Also if you have adhd this book’s structure is literally written the way my brain works so I found it very entertaining for that 🤣 That’s all folks! Drop some of your favourite recent reads in the comments. #bookreview #thevanishinghalf #gamesandrituals #notesonanervousplanet #katherineheiny #shortstories #literaryfiction #selfhelpbooks #bookreviews #minireviews #bookstagram #ukbookstagrammer

If you haven't read a Katherine Heiny story, I urge you to stop what you're doing and order a copy of Standard Deviation. I guarantee you won't be disappointed. She is that rare breed of writer who is genuinely funny. I don't mean a quick snort of amusement here. I'm talking about proper 'clutching your stomach, wiping your eyes, give me a minute to recover here' laughter. I'd forgotten how funny she was until I read Games and Rituals, her latest book of short stories and particularly, Twist and Shout, which grabbed me from the off because it's written in the second person and begins with the line, 'Your elderly father has mistaken his four-thousand-dollar hearing aid for a cashew and eaten it.' I was reading this on a train travelling into London and was laughing so much, people actually looked up from their phones to stare at me. That doesn't happen much in London. And then the ending of this story brought me to tears. That's rare for me but also the mark of a brilliant writer who can achieve tears of laughter and sorrow in the space of 16 pages. Katherine Heiny is a gift of a writer and if you haven't discovered her yet, please, have this one on me. 🩷📚 #katherineheiny #bookreviews #shortstories #bookstagrammers #bookstagram #readersofinstagram

•Light-hearted reads• I am a self confessed sad book girl! if a book isn't full of sorrow and suffering, doesn't shake me to my core and force me to question everything, i'm not buying in! Not sure what this says about me🥴!!! It's only recently I've noticed how many emotionally reflective, sad books I read and that maybe it's time for a change! I see myself as a fairly diverse reader, but not when it comes to lighter, feel good reads. I buy uplifting books, I just don't often reach for them when it's time to choose my next read. I'm challenging myself to read more or my TBR and these are some of the books I've chosen to read over the coming months. None of these are new, some of them have been on my shelves for years🙈😆 Have you read any of these? What should I bring to the top of the pile? #bookstagram #booksta #lightreads #gentlereads #romancereads #fictionbooks #ig #anxiouspeople #darlingindiaknight #booklovers #emilyhenry #thelostbookshop #crazyrichasians #themostfunweeverhad #clairelombardo #katherineheiny #earlymorningriser #christinalauren #ninastibbe #remarkablybrightcreatures

Early Morning Riser by Katherine Heiny. A quick read (that actually took me quite a while to get through) from last month.

🅺🅳🅿🅶 🅸🅽🅵🅻🆄🅴🅽🅲🅴🆁 🅿🆁🅾🅶🆁🅰🅼 ᗷOOƘ ᖇƐᐯƖƐᗯ gaмeѕ and rιтυalѕ: ѕтorιeѕ ᴮᵞ ᴷᴬᵀᴴᴱᴿᴵᴺᴱ ᴴᴱᴵᴺᵞ Games and Rituals by Katherine Heiny is an entertaining and thought provoking read. I read this book in one sitting because I couldn’t put it down. Usually with a collection of short stories there are some that fall flat but that wasn’t the case with this book. Each story held my interest. If I had to choose a favorite, I would pick Twist and Shout. It is told in a second person narration and is about a woman’s relationship with her aging father. The ending was a sucker punch that came out of nowhere and left me reeling for moment before I could continue on. When a story can cause a big reaction in 17 pages, it will always be a winner in my eyes. I give Games and Rituals: Stories by Katherine Heiny ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5. Thank you to @katherineheiny & KDPG Influencer Program for the #gifted book in exchange for my honest review. About the Book 👇🏻 The games and rituals performed by Katherine Heiny’s characters range from mischievous to tender: In “Bridesmaid, Revisited,” Marlee, suffering from a laundry and life crisis, wears a massive bridesmaid’s dress to work. In “Twist and Shout,” Erica’s elderly father mistakes his four-thousand-dollar hearing aid for a cashew and eats it. In “Turn Back, Turn Back,” a bedtime story coupled with a receipt for a Starbucks babyccino reveal a struggling actor’s deception. And in “561,” Charlene pays the true price of infidelity and is forced to help her husband’s ex-wife move out of the family home. (“It’s like you’re North Korea and South Korea . . . But would North Korea help South Korea move?”) Pub Date: March 5, 2024 Publisher: Vintage Book Length: 240 pages 💬❔QOTD: Do you have a morning ritual? A bedtime ritual? I have had my eye on this book for awhile and decided I was definitely going to read it on holiday. I wasn’t disappointed. Penny is in her mid 30’s and has walked out on a job she didn’t like and is divorcing her husband Sherman. She heads to see her eccentric grandmother Pincer as she has to sort out the latest scrape she has got herself into and meets Bert, her accountant and then a whole host of stuff happens which ends up with Penny living in his van, the Dog Of The North. With a cast of larger than life characters it is a funny, and touching, book about Penny’s life and her unusual family with her parents mysterious disappearance in Australia at the heart of it. It reminded me a bit of Katherine Heiny’s Early Morning Riser or Nina Stibbe’s fiction and I will definitely read Elizabeth McKenzie’s other books. The perfect holiday read. #booksofinstagram #holidayreads #buyabook #borrowabook #thedogofthenorth #elizabethmckenzie #ninastibbe #katherineheiny

. What is this feeling I’m feeling right now? It’s like I’m sad, for another person? Is that a thing? Am I going crazy?! . 📺 Louise, Bob’s Burgers. . . 📚 #marchwrapup time! 📚 A whopping four five star reads this month, including a Replay reread. I've got three people in the office reading it and continue to love sharing my favourite book ❤️ Ministry of Time was a bit patchy but the plot and emotive elements were strong enough to hit the illustrious mark. All the feels. The real surprise though was how much I loved People on Platform 5. Cheesy ensemble feel-good read but it did it so well. Utterly loved it and if you need a pick-me-up it's ideal. 📚 Rounding off the Giant Days reread in the new HB library format gave the last five star. It's such a wonderful story over the whole series and, whilst there's a few dips, it's my favourite graphic novel series for it's wonderfully relatable human moments. 📚 Outside of these excellent reads was alas mostly disappointments. The next Lee Child was good but nothing special, same old same old. I did enjoy revisiting the Vinyl Detective but this one didn't deliver as well as prior books - I still want more though! Standard Deviation was a strange novel - it's heavy on emotions/adulthood, which was great, but fundamentality not a lot happened and it didn't feel like anyone developed? Similarly Imposter Syndrome was an interesting tech spy kinda thing with some tension that was good, but again didn't really have much happen and the characters were a bit meh. 📚 The last two I didn't really enjoy, but I would still recommend to the right readers? I can see the appeal of both, but they just weren't for me. Unicorn Boy was a little too whacky, trying a bit hard with some of the jokes, but great illustrations! Rachel Price on the other hand was so incredibly twisty and reveal-y (some of which was predictable) that I really didn't care much by the end. I like to reread good books and there's little value here, it's like a thriller TV series - I know people love them but not my cup of tea? You gotta try different things sometimes though, and if 'omg' thrillers are your thing, try this. 📚

This was a fun read. There is #marriage, #parenthood, #relationship, loss, and #humour and heart bringing it all together. The narrative is relatable, and the characters feel like people we may have met.  😺 It’s about Graham and his two wives who are apparently polar opposites of each other. His second wife Audra - 15 years younger than Graham- is not quite beautiful but her liveliness kept her far away from being plain. She is quite the social butterfly, and knows everything about everyone she has met! She even brings over unexpected guests, from the doorman to their son’s Origami Club crew, turning Thanksgiving into a wild ride! 😁 But she isn’t naive or innocent. And Graham has his own flaws. Throughout the story, he finds himself in an emotional affair with his ex-wife, all with Audra's silent approval. 🙊 You can’t help but think: Can you really love two people who are worlds apart? Is there even such a thing as a "right" choice in matters of the heart?  🧡 With such unanswerable questions and little nuggets of unexpected wisdom, the novel hints at some deeper, shadowy corners without really exploring them. I would rather not nitpick but accept the #novel as a feel-good read.💌 . . . #standarddeviation #katherineheiny #Bookrecs #Bookreview #booktography #bookblogger #Bookphotography #bookflatlay #readthisbook #womenauthors #bookstagrampic #womenwriters #emotionalaffair #marriagehumor #readersofinstagram

Plot? What plot? Who cares about plot when your whole heart is taken up with caring for the people. Jane moves to Boyne City, gets a job, and falls in love with Duncan, the local handyman. It turns out that Duncan is as handsome as he is handy, and that he has slept with every woman in town - every woman, that is, except Jane's mandolin-strumming friend Frieda, who has never slept with anyone. Most irksome of Duncan's prior lovers is Aggie, his over-friendly ex-wife, who bakes the best cookies in the world and couldn't possibly love Gary, her ridiculously passive husband. How is Jane to trust in Duncan's love? Though, to be honest, that's the least of her worries ... Years pass and normal, everyday stuff happens. Kids don't like baths, mothers don't change, husbands don't understand. It's hilarious, but mostly because it's all so painfully familiar. I read and enjoyed Standard Deviation a few months ago, but I liked this one MUCH more. Almost every page of Early Morning Riser had a line that made me laugh out loud. Not since Adrian Mole's epic outing has the true trauma of the school tour been captured with such nauseating clarity. The book was worth it for that scene alone. My only disappointment was the ending. Yes, Jane reaches a better understanding of herself, but it's a quiet resolution. The story just sort of rocks back to equilibrium, much like life, I suppose, and much like in life, I wanted one page more. #highlyrecommendbooks #earlymorningriser #katherineheiny #katherineheinybooks #booksthatmakeyoulaugh #funnybooks #bookthoughts #bookreview #bookstagram #bookcoverlove

“I was first introduced to Katherine Heiny last year with Games & Rituals and I was ecstatic when I realized she had two novels and another short story collection. You meet women from all stages of life and relationships in Heiny’s writing, and I adore the way she turns character quirks into relatable gems. She always manages to weave in humor throughout her stories, even when the topics are deep. I love that she’s often inspired by funny things that happen around her, and I feel very lucky as a reader that she can use those to spruce up mundane situations.” —@ipekreading, Knopf Connoisseur 📸 . . #KatherineHeiny #GamesandRituals #aborzoibook

If you receive my newsletter (February edition went out last week!), then you already know that I’ve had a rich and fulfilling month in terms of reading and writing, and creating. Part of that is because of my new creative project of writing a long form essay every month—last month’s was about the delights of rereading Danielle Steele; have you read it yet? I have taken exquisite pleasure in writing these pieces, and my next one will be arriving in inboxes on THURSDAY. It’s called “In Praise of Pieces: Commonplace Books, Friendship Quotes, and Our Bookless Book Club” and I’m really excited to share it with you. As with last month’s essay, and like next month’s, these essays will be available for all subscribers, and thereafter for paid subscribers only. As I wrote in my newsletter last week, “I entered into this enterprise with the lowest expectations, with the intention of finding a different way to be online and channelling my thoughts and ideas into long-form projects whose composition seemed like it might help to further mend my brain after more than a decade of fragmentation on social media. And let me tell you, it has felt so good to write these longer pieces, so rich and satisfying. And it has felt even better to have so many of you become paid subscribers to receive these pieces.” Thanks to everybody who has read, shared, or supported. Challenging myself in this way has been so satisfying. It has also meant that I got to spend part of last week rereading Katherine Heiny’s EARLY MORNING RISER, because my March essay is going to be all about her work and what it means to me. If you’re not on my newsletter list yet, you can sign up at the link in my profile. #TodaysTeacup #KatherineHeiny #substackwriter

Another delight from @katherineheiny 💫 I am not usually a huge reader of short stories but this was just perfection to dip in and out of whilst I was on holiday with two children. I really love Katherine’s style of writing.. wry, sharp and so well observed. Each chapter gave a unique take on a relationship and the way different people interact with various people in their lives. Clever and fun. Loved loved loved. ❤️💛❤️ #pandjbookclub #katherineheiny

FAVOURITE BOOKS (and a new decade...) I turn 30 tomorrow and I've been reflecting back a lot on my 20s. A few things stand out: ☆ Moving to York in 2018 for my MA and meeting some absolutely amazing people, who are changing my life still to this day (you know who you are, I saw you on Saturday) ☆ In 2018 I set myself a goal to read more - as reading was a victim of various mental health things in my early 20s - set myself a little aim of reading 40 books and I've never looked back ☆ Embracing new (and old) hobbies - reading, crocheting, hiking and now jogging. Also can't forget my plant mom life 🪴 Only three books on the list were read before 2018 - which just shows what a fabulous little bookworm time I've had since that NY resolution. In no particular order my all time favourites are: ☆ The Offing by Benjamin Myers ☆ Briefly a Delicious Life by Nell Stevens ☆ Middlemarch by George Eliot ☆ The Return of the Native by Thomas Hardy ☆ Tess of the D'Ubervilles by Thomas Hardy ☆ The Tenant of Wildfell Hall by Anne Bronte ☆ Lord of the Rings by JRR Tolkien ☆ A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles ☆ Wolf Hall Trilogy by Hilary Mantel ☆ Still Life by Sarah Winman ☆ Early Morning Riser by Katherine Heiny ☆ My Brilliant Friend by Elena Ferrante ☆ The Luminaries by Eleanor Catton ☆ North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell ☆ Circe by Madeline Miller ☆ Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen ☆ Persuasion by Jane Austen ☆ Cathedral by Ben Hopkins ☆ Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver #favouritebooks #bookstack #bookstagramuk #bookstagram #booksbooksbooks

One of the nicest things about my reading month this January has been space to read whatever I feel like according to how the mood strikes, to read new books, and old books, and even to reread books, like Katherine Heiny's STANDARD DEVIATION, which I borrowed from the library three years ago and loved so much I had to buy my own copy. At that time I'd also just started writing a novel, which was very much under Heiny's influence, and so I decided to read STANDARD DEVIATION again as I completed work on the draft (I finished it this morning!). Right now I'm reading FLIGHT OF THE MAIDENS, by Jane Gardam, whose prose, plots, and every single sentence are always so strange and surprising. I actually found her work really difficult when I started reading her, because I didn't understand that the very point was to strap myself in and just follow the ride, that disorientation was part of the experience. And finally, I loved Emily Austin's follow up to EVERYBODY IN THIS ROOM WILL SOMEDAY BE DEAD more than I can possibly explain, but I will do my best to do so when it comes out next week. Like Heiny, like Gardam, Austin's work is ALSO so strange and surprising. There is a kinship here which I might not have even considered had I not happened to read these three all together. #KatherineHeiny #JaneGardam #EmilyAustin

. . . OVERLOOKED & UNDERRATED First of all, it's National Polka Dot Day, so no sass about my border! There’s a method to my unaesthetic madness. Don’t we all have those books we read and love and think “why isn’t there more buzz about this book? I feel like more people should be talking/posting about this one!” These weren’t necessarily published in 2023, but 2023 is the year I read and wanted to shout about them, in all their excellent glory. From nonfiction essays to short stories to memoir to fiction, these were standouts I read last year that I wish received more attention. ⛑️Goodnight, Irene - Luis Alberta Urrea is a well established and gifted writer, I just didn’t see nearly enough acclaim for this WW2 story of a women on the front with the Red Cross. 🪥Games & Rituals - I love Katherine Heiny, in small bits or larger ones, so got a huge kick out of these short stories. Originally a library book that I ended up purchasing so I could own! 🗺️A Map for the Missing - Belinda Huijuan Tang’s debut is set in China and explores family history and choices and leaving home. I ordered this a while ago from @wob.group purely because I was struggling to find something that appealed for #michiganbooks #50statesreadingchallenge .. I found this, read a few good reviews so went with it. I hadn’t seen this much anywhere and the cover gave me the impression that it wasn’t a recent release but was actually published in 2021. I don’t know why this isn’t spoken about more because I truly loved it 🥹 “Jane falls in love with Duncan easily. He is charismatic, good natured & handsome. Unfortunately every other woman in Boyne City seems to have fallen for him too at one point or another. While Jane may be able to come to terms with dating the worlds most prolific seducer of women, she wishes she didn’t have to share him so widely. His ex wife has him mow her lawn & his co-worker comes & goes from his apartment at the most inopportune times. But any vision she had of her future, changes after one tragic night. The four peoples lives become permanently intertwined.” I loved everything about this, maybe more so because it was so unexpected. It was funny, sad, heartwarming & funny again. The story was great, the characters even better and had just the right amount of silly in it too. This isn’t a typical romance book (I’m really not a fan) but I think would still appeal if that’s your vibe. If you haven’t heard of this book yet and need a little pick me up to warm your January heart then this is definitely a good one for that.

“Games and Rituals” by Katherine Heiny 📚 ✨This is a short story collection by Katherine Heiny, which explores and focuses on the intricacies of our day-to-day lives as humans. There are altogether 11 stories in the book - a daughter taking care of her grumpy elderly father, a driving instructor who has a crush on one of her colleagues, a woman living her way through the pandemic, and more. I wouldn’t say I liked every story in this collection, but I did enjoy most of it. For me, the stories are funny, and thought-provoking. I also like the way the author approached in writing some insightful topics such as motherhood, infidelity, marriage, and life in general.✨ #gamesandrituals #katherineheiny #review #bookstagram #bookreview #instabooks #bookreviewer #goodreads #bookish #bookphotography #bibliophile #books #bookaholic #bookstagrammer #bookaddicted

Starting my new year with some new books. 2024 is starting off as the year of hip-hop. I happened to be reading Fashion Killa and was unable to finish it before the new year. Then I decided why not stick to the theme as I also have Stepping Out and Hip Hop Family Tree out from the library. As for fiction, Muriel Barbery and Katherine Heiny are authors I’ve read prior and enjoyed so it feels almost safe to kick off the year with them. 😄 #newbooks #librarybooks #clarksonpotter #fantagraphics #simonandschuster #europaeditions #murielbarbery #katherineheiny #knopf #milkweededitions #hiphop #hiphopbooks

Reco of a reread. A must must must! Such a gorgeous cozy funny tale of modern marriages. . . #twelvebooksontuesday #12books6authors . . Like many who have completed this challenge, I could have easily picked #12authors24books, but wouldn’t that be a bit much? (I think another post might be in order) I have loved every one of these with the exception of Remote Sympathy only because I just picked it up after really enjoying Chidgey’s novel Pet and haven’t cracked it open yet. Three of these authors are new to me this year. I am excited to explore the backlists of Tyler, and Chidgey and eager to read more of Perrin. Heiny, Kingsolver and St. John Mandel are favourites and auto buy authors. I’ll never tire of the stories they have to tell. See any here you like? all short story collections are inevitably tricky - you will get stories which you devour, and some you will get stuck on. i picked this up without an expectations (except all of the above), and i can say this can go up to the list of my favourite shorts collections (lily king wins this year though). every story was captivating, interesting to read, and all of them collectively explored human relationships and mishaps from different angles. the only downside - some of them had a very intense build-up, a good climax, and then they ended - on the other hand, this could make them more interesting than getting a clear continuation. all in all, amazing writing and really great exploration of the mundane: the games and rituals we share with other people, knowingly or not.

Exciting news for all Katherine Heiny fans! (Which is most of you, let’s be honest.) We are delighted to be publishing this beautiful new edition of her stunning debut collection of short stories, SINGLE, CAREFREE, MELLOW.❤️ #readingflex #readingflex Maya's dog is dying, and she is planning to leave her boyfriend. On the whole she feels worse about the dog. Nina thought it might be difficult to summon the moral fortitude to have an extramarital affair with a Presbyterian minister living above the garage, but she discovers that almost anything is possible. A teenager finds an affair with her history teacher too sealed off from the rest of her life, like the last slice of cake under a glass dome. These women are best friends, roommates and mistresses. They tipple and titillate, fantasies and fumble, worry and wander. They make poor choices in men and children's magicians and wise choices in what to wear to meet their lovers' wives. None of them are single (or carefree or mellow) but all are irresistible and all too familiar. ✨ 'Like Cheever mixed with Ephron’ NEW YORK TIMES 'Simply wonderful, I savoured every page’ GUARDIAN ‘Heiny's work does something magical: gives women's interior lives the gravity they so richly deserve and makes you laugh along the way' LENA DUNHAM 🏷️: #readingflex #katherineheiny #debutbook #singlecarefreemellow #shortstories #shortstorycollection #storycollection #literaryfiction #reading #books #bookstagramuk #4thestatebooks

They’re here! 😍 Proofs of the sublime new short story collection from Katherine Heiny, #GamesandRituals. #readingflex ✨ Proofs available for book bloggers, please comment if you’d like to receive a copy! ✨ 🧡 The beloved author of Standard Deviation and Early Morning Riser brings us eleven glittering stories of love – friendships formed at the airport bar, ex-husbands with benefits, mothers of suspiciously sweet teenagers, ill-advised trysts – in all its forms, ridiculous and sublime. 🪥 In ‘Bridesmaid, Revisited’, Marilee, suffering from a laundry and life crisis, wears a massive bridesmaid’s dress to work. In ‘Twist and Shout’, Ericka’s elderly father mistakes his four-thousand-dollar hearing aid for a cashew and eats it. In ‘Turn Back, Turn Back’, a bedtime story coupled with a receipt for a Starbucks babyccino reveal a struggling actor’s deception. And in ‘561’, Charlene pays the true price of infidelity and is forced to help her husband’s ex-wife move out of the family home. 💘 From one of our most celebrated writers, our bard of waking up in the wrong bed, wearing the wrong shoes, running late for the wrong job, but loved by the right people, Katherine Heiny has delivered a work of glorious humour and immense kindness. Out 18th April. 🏷️ #readingflex #katherineheiny #standarddeviation #earlymorningriser #bookstagram #bookstagramuk #shortstories #shortstory #4thestatebooks

Books I finished in September and October: 1. Claire Dederer's Monsters, an exploration of our relationship with artists we love who've done bad things. 2. Dolly Alderton's Everything I Know About Love, my pneumonia comfort read, which, despite my ill health when I read it, made me glad I wasn't in my twenties. 3. Katherine Heiny's short story collection, Games and Rituals, my favorite of which was Bridesmaid, Revisted, and not just because I love a pun. Also continuing my 🐌-pace read of Jan Morris's Venice and Tolstoy's War and Peace. #whatIread #monsters #clairedederer #dollyalderton #everythingiknowaboutlove #katherineheiny #gamesandrituals

I loved Early Morning Riser and wanted to read something else by Katherine Heiny. These are wonderfully written short stories that, somehow unbeknownst to me when I downloaded the book, are all about infidelity. Probably not what I would have chosen if I’d known, but nicely done nonetheless. #singlecarefreemellow #katherineheiny #bookstagram #librariansofinstagram

Games and Rituals - Katherine Heiny ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 “Your elderly father has mistaken his four thousand dollar hearing aid for a cashew and eaten it.” Katherine Heiny is the MASTER of the opening line, and in a book of short stories we get to have several - the one above isn’t even my favourite! The eleven stories in Games & Rituals made me both laugh and cry, in some instances simultaneously! Heiny has such amazing observations around the trials and trivialities of family life and relationships - and wonderful turns of phrase to render these hilariously surreal and movingly poignant in turn. As with any collection of stories some I liked more than others. I think CobRa (where a husband is worried his wife will realise he no longer sparks joy and Marie Kondo him out of the house) and Twist and Shout (of the cashew nut/hearing aid above) were my personal favourites, but there’s something to recommend each story. If you haven’t tried Katherine Heiny before, I urge you to - and this is a really great place to start. I’ll leave you with this opener: “Colette has been a driving instructor for twelve years… and yet it only occurs to her today that Ted Bundy had a driver’s license.” 1. Moving? ⭐️ 2. Enjoyable? ⭐️ 3. Original? ⭐️ 4. Curiosity? 💫 5. An underrated author shout-out to @katherineheiny ! I first came across her when I picked up Early Morning Riser in Bruges last year after having heard nothing about it, but it being one of few English books in the shop, and I absolutely devoured it! @bookreccos said it best on the pod when they said that it 'explores the extraordinary moments that make an ordinary life' 💚 I've since gifted the book to my Aunt who said it lifted her out of a year long reading rut! Katherine Heiny was also my introduction to short stories. I loved listening to Games and Rituals, especially the driving test centre one, and can't wait to dive into Single, Carefree, Mellow. Heiny is now firmly on my auto-buy list so I picked up Standard Deviation as soon as I saw it in a little indi in Anglesey. If you love nuanced character observations in heart warming reads with depth not cringe, I fully recommend!

STACK SATURDAY (both books 📚 & pumpkins 🎃) 🛍️BOOK HAUL🛍️ [oops, I did it again] As I've mentioned, one of the downsides of driving a high school carpool to a town over half an hour away is that I need to kill time after dropoff to avoid the hideous commuter traffic into the city. This has led to many bakery visits where I wait out the congestion with coffee, pastry, and my book. Definitely a mixed blessing. Wednesday it led to my discovery of a fabulous used book store in that town. Another decidedly mixed blessing! All of the 10 pictured books were between $1 and $3 in price, so how could I refuse? And most were on my Goodreads shelf of books I wanted to read, new-to-me titles by previously liked or loved authors. Plus, look at the way that beam of light in the photo is shining on the stack approvingly. 😆 As always, if you have thoughts on any of these, do tell: Mona Awad: 13 Ways of Looking at a Fat Girl (fiction) Shout Her Lovely Name: Natalie Serber (short stories) Katherine Heiny: Standard Deviation (fiction) Alka Joshi: The Perfumist of Paris (historical fiction) Abdulrazak Gurnah: Afterlives (fiction) Claire Dederer: Love & Trouble (memoir) Margaret Atwood: Writing with Intent (nonfiction) Karin Slaughter: The Last Widow (mystery) Elif Shafak: The Architect's Apprentice (historical fiction) Stephen King: Mr Mercedes (mystery) Where do you get most of your books? Libraries, used bookstores, Audible/Libro.fm, independent bookstores, Amazon, other online bookstores, retail chains like Barnes and Noble, somewhere else? I am a sucker for the library, both audio and print, and used bookstores, but I will definitely visit and patronize independent bookstores, too! . . . . . . . . . . 🏷️ #bookhaul #bookstack #bookpile #stacksaturday #saturdaystack #tbr #saturdaystacks #booksbooksbooks #tbrpile #tbrpilekeepsgrowing #bookworm #monaawad #stephenking #elifshafak #margaretatwood #katherineheiny #alkajoshi #natalieserber #clairedederer. #karinslaughter #abdulrazakgurnah #thriftedbooks #thriftedbooksarebest #usedbooks #usedbookstore #bookwoman #babygotbooks

Quick-fire book review for one I can’t stop thinking about! And some pumpkin mug/coffee appreciation because it’s October 🍁🎃🧣 When @ananascanread says a book was 5 stars you listen 🫡 because I swear her recs never miss! Same goes for @keyalilyreads and her mug recs because this mug is a new favourite! I’d heard before that Early Morning Riser is great if you’re a Gilmore Girls fan and though I couldn’t see it at the start I was so on board with this sentiment by the end. The small-town vibes, the cosy autumnal-ness, and memorable ensemble were all there, waiting within the pages. If you’re a fan of atmospheric, character-driven stories that leave your heart feeling warm and glowing, you’d enjoy this one! This was a library copy but I’ve picked my own one up because I think this is a book-world I’ll want to revisit time and again. Is this on your tbr? What are some book-worlds that you want to return to?

Possibly the most important thing for a writer is not to expect the image to wait for you. REVIEW 💕 . This book follows Jane, newly moved into Boyne City, who meets Duncan and falls in love pretty quickly. The problem is Duncan has also slept with most of the women in Boyne City and Jane meets them almost everywhere they go, he even mows his ex-wife’s lawn. Jane hates sharing him and when a tragic accident happens, she feels her dreams of marriage and family are even further out of reach but is soon to discover that might not necessarily be the case. I found this a really odd read, I neither like nor disliked it. The lack of plot was a little frustrating, aside from the accident, nothing much happened, the book spanned for 17 years between 2002 and 2019 and sometimes it felt like it was taking 17 years to read with how little was going on. The characters are also pretty awful, Duncan is described as charming but I just found him slimy, Aggie is infuriating and your typical nosy neighbour type. Jane is the only one who is mildly bearable and I wondered why she put up with everyone around her. On the whole as a book it was fine, I didn’t feel forced to finish but I’m not sure if I’d read it again.

💍BOOK REVIEW💍 Standard Deviation by Katherine Heiny ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ “This was the pleasure of twenty-year-old friendships. Tracing a memory back to its source. Like following a stream through the woods and up a mountain until you find the spring trickling from a rock and you clear away the dead brown leaves of the intervening years and the water flows as sweetly as ever”. As I found with Early Morning Riser, the synopsis doesn’t give you a very clear idea on what the book is about. There was minimal plot, but a real focus on the characters and their interactions. Following along on the mundane, and often damaged, lives of Audra & Graham, as well as their friends, family, and quite a few strangers. This book, and its characters, was unique, quirky and filled with dry humour about the struggles of parenting and a modern marriage (especially when your second wife wants to be friends with your first wife, when they’re total opposites). I highly recommend this book if you want to get invested in a character driven, simple & funny story.
