This book was an incredible read! I devoured it so quickly, and my only complaint is that it's a standalone. I understand the point was to end where Macbeth begins, but I could have read volume after volume of the story told by this author. It's one of my top picks for 2024 hands down. But Duncan’s court is rife with sly words and unfriendly faces, women desperate to usurp her position, and others whose motives are shrouded in mystery. As her coronation approaches, a deadly turn of events forces Gruoch to flee Duncan and the capital. Book 31 of 2024: ‘Lady MacBethad’ by Isabelle Schuler 4⭐️ ‘Daughter of an ousted king, descendant of ancient druids, as a child it is prophesied that one day Gruoch will be queen of Alba. When she is betrothed to Duncan, heir elect, this appears to confirm the prophecy. She leaves behind her home, her family and her close friend MacBethad, and travels to the royal seat at Scone to embrace her new position. But nothing is as Gruoch anticipates. As her coronation approaches, a deadly turn of events forces Gruoch to flee Duncan and the capital, finding herself alone, vulnerable and at the mercy of an old enemy. Her hope of becoming Queen all but lost, Gruoch does what she must to survive, vowing that one day she will fulfill her destiny and take up the future owed to her. Whatever it may take.’ You might like this if you like: 📚Historical fiction 📚Shakespeare 📚Strong but questionable female characters -Thoughts- A very enjoyable read! As an English teacher and Shakespeare nerd, a novel surrounding one of Shakespeare’s most interesting characters was very appealing and it didn’t disappoint. The ‘Macbeth’ references were a lovely little detail too. Gruoch is a really captivating narrator and lends some humanity to Lady Macbeth’s character. As well as this, Schuler presents the world of Middle Ages Scotland gorgeously - it’s dangerous and full of power struggles but manages to show ‘Lady Macbethad’s’ rise to power in a completely believable way. I think this is exactly what George R R Martin tried to do with Cersei, although mercifully, Schuler manages to do this without incest! The only thing that stops it from being 5⭐️ is that the pace feels a little off, particularly at the beginning. We get a LOT of information and a lot of events happen in a very short time and it felt a little rushed. However, I definitely recommend this!

Finished this at lunch today. Highly recommend. Queen Hereafter by Isabelle Schuler ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Queen Hereafter follows the life of Gruoch, known to most of us as Lady Macbeth. It begins with her grandmother prophesying that she will be greater than the rest of them and follows her life and she fulfills the destiny that she believes is hers. There is much drama and also romance in the chess match that becomes Gruoch’s quest to become queen. I can't wait to get into this very curated little haul. I've been waiting for 3 of these to be published for what feels like ages. Just as well I have the Easter hols coming up! Hollie McNish's Slug was mightily entertaining so I pre-ordered Lobster months ago. I wish she would come to Belgium on a tour! #holliemcnish I'm expecting The Painters Daughter to be one of my best reads of the year so far. I am teaching Macbeth soon for the 15th time (yes, I was bored, I counted!) So Lady McBethad will add a layer of amusement I'm sure. Lady Macbeth has always fascinated me so I'm excited to see how this explores her character. #isabelleschuler All I need now is Medea by Rosie Hewlett which comes out next week and I will have literary joy for weeks #rosiehewlett Surely I qualify for a week off work to read these?!!!

#bookstagramargentina #bookstagram #ladymacbethad #isabelleschuler #edicionesuranoargentina #umbrieleditores #retelling #historica #shakespeare #recomendacion #reseñasdelibros #review #newphoto #newpost

QUEEN HEREAFTER by Isabelle Schuler (★3.5) Queen Hereafter takes on the difficult task of blending the legendary portrayal of Lady Macbeth from Shakespeare’s (woefully inaccurate) Macbeth with the real-life historical figure, Gruoch. While Schuler’s endeavor falls short of perfection, she managed to weave a rich tapestry for this well-known figure of Lady M in the Scottish play. Gruoch, the daughter of a deposed king and descendant of ancient druids, grows up with the belief that she is destined to be crowned queen of Alba and restore her Pictish kin’s lands. Schuler’s writing truly shines in what she was able to craft of the atmosphere, mood, and setting, resulting in a transportive experience. The story itself felt draped in heavy mists and fog. Also, the commendable angle Schuler sets for her tale is one of reclaiming women’s stories in history — imagining a vibrant, capable young woman, whose legacy gets tarnished by her ambition. Unsurprisingly, not much is known about the real-life Lady Macbeth, especially outside of her fame as the wife and queen of MacBethad mac Findlaích (Macbeth). In Queen Hereafter, Schuler begins with Gruoch as a very young girl, perhaps too young. For the first little bit, I struggled to ascertain her age (which turned out to be somewhere in the neighborhood of 5 years old), as her level of precociousness placed her more in line with a teenage Disney princess. Following her betrothal to Duncan, the heir-elect, she works hard to embrace her new position at the royal court, determined to secure her foretold destiny. Once the political intrigue and betrayal take hold of the plot, something almost inevitable at court, Gruoch’s characterization continues to fill out, and you start to glimpse the shaping of someone who will be immortalized through history and in the shielded and shadowy way of Lady M. Queen Hereafter offers a captivating tale of female ambition, power, and the pursuit of destiny. _ Thanks to @syellico for recommending this one! 😘 _ #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #readersgonnaread #readersofinstagram #bookreview #queenhereafter #macbeth #ladymacbeth #isabelleschuler

REVIEW: Thank you, @harperperennial, for the gifted book. Super excited to share this stunning book. Have you read MacBeth, or do you have a favorite work of Shakespeare? My high school reading was heavy on Shakespeare, luckily led by teachers who were passionate about those stories. I can remember reading MacBeth. I have a memory of discussing Lady MacBeth in the classroom at my high school with all my classmates sitting in a circle animatedly sharing what had happened. All that to say, I was pretty thrilled to have Isabelle Schuler’s book Queen Hereafter placed in my hands. 😍 Queen Hereafter is full of atmosphere and tension and took some turns I was not expecting. I love when a bold character is explored this way because I always felt like there was more to her story. Swept away to medieval Scotland and completely absorbed in this story, Gruoch’s journey is one I won’t soon forget. About the book: “Suspenseful, atmospheric and full of twists and turns, I loved the brutal, backstabbing world that Isabelle Schuler conjures up where only the most ruthless can survive.

. . . #ladymacbeth #macbeth #shakespeare #isabelleschuler #kelten #schottland #lesen #lesenmachtglücklich #lesenmachtspass #literatur #bücher #bücherliebe #bücherwurm #bookstagramdeutschland

I really enjoyed following along with Gruoch as she became a woman, scheming and plotting her way to her grandmother's prophecy that she would one day be Queen. I loved the historical context as well, with the culture of the Picts during the rise of Christianity and the clashes there. This was such a well-researched book with strong characters. There were many layers and players to this story, and I often thought if I would have been able to survive without knowing how to be as masterful as Gruoch! I would like more from this author. #queenhereafter #ladymacbeth #isabelleschuler #harpercollinspublishers #strongwoman

Queen Hereafter (Lady Macbethad) By Isabelle Schuler 5⭐️ Ever wonder how Lady Macbeth came to be such a power hungry gal? Queen Hereafter is a historical fiction tale of Gruoch (aka Lady Macbethad), the actual queen who served as the inspiration for Shakespeare’s Lady Macbeth. Gruoch is prophesied at a young age that she will be “immortalized.” She takes this to mean that she will one day be queen of Alba (the Gaelic term for Scotland). This prophecy pretty much drives every decision she makes throughout her rise to power. Gruoch has to balance her Druid roots with the rising influence of Christianity, and she refuses to settle for being a pawn in others’ plots for power. This was such a delightful change from the typical FMCs in stories. Gruoch is so unapologetically entitled and believes she is a queen by birthright long before her head bears a crown. She is morally gray at best, and spins an extremely tangled web of plotting and stabbing others in the back (literally) to gain status. The ending was such a mic drop moment. It ends right where Shakespeare’s play begins, effectively making this a prequel. If you’re into Gaelic/Norse/Saxon history, this is a great read! Will you like the characters? Probably not. Most of them are scheming jerks. But the Game of Thrones type of plot twists and coups will keep you entertained start to finish with beautiful writing to boot! #historicalfiction #queenhereafter #isabelleschuler #bookreview #bookreviewer #goodreads #readingchallenge #readmorebooks #bookstagram #bookstagrammer

Book 4 of 2024 is @isabellenschuler 's gripping historical novel about love, power and vengeance. It focuses on the youth of Gruoch, the future Lady Macbeth, but here she is not the Shakespearean femme fatale we have all grown familiar with but instead a more sympathetic character, a wronged soul rarely in charge of her own destiny. The daughter of a druid and a usurped prince, Gruoch's beloved grandmother prophesises that she will be queen of Alba (pronounced Al-a-pa - Gàidhlig name of Scotland) one day. When tragedy strikes, Gruoch, her father and brother flee to the care of King Malcolm's daughter Donalda, her husband Findlaich and their young son Macbethad with whom Gruoch forms a close bond. In adulthood she is promised to Duncan, Macbethad's cousin and King Malcolm's heir presumptive, but she makes enemies at court. Ultimately she has to fend for herself, make tenuous alliances, and do whatever it takes to survive - but she remains determined to fulfill her ambitions. #ladymacbethad #isabelleschuler #2024reads #historicalfiction #historicalnovel #amreading #eatyourheartoutshakespeare #scottishhistory #macbeth #ladymacbeth #gruoch

I studied Macbeth when I was 13 years old and my English teacher fittingly cast me as one of the three witches (surpassing himself only with his later casting of King Lear, in which I was Regan - in his words, "one of the two bitches"). I was one of those annoying children who really liked Shakespeare, but I hadn't at that point developed any interest in the underlying history. Reading Isabelle Schuler's Lady Macbethad, which is essentially a prequel to Macbeth, served to highlight how little of Macbeth's historical context I understood at the time I read it and, although it's a work of fiction, Lady Macbethad definitely gave me something new to research before I go to see Ralph Fiennes as Macbeth in Edinburgh later this month. 📚 Schuler's portrayal of the infamous Lady Macbeth takes place before she enters what I suppose we can call her villain era, when, as young Gruoch, daughter of a king and descendant of the druids, she hears her grandmother prophesize that she will one day be queen. However, in a kingdom often torn apart by rivalries and violence, Gruoch's path to the throne is far from straightforward and, predictably, requires her to get her hands bloody. 📚 There have been a lot of feminist retellings in recent years and, to be honest, I wasn't expecting much going into this one, but I was pleasantly surprised. Right from the first pages, I was drawn into the kingdom created by Schuler, finding her depiction of Scotland's history every bit as interesting as her nuanced and believable characters. Schuler's Gruoch was ambitious and conniving without falling into a parody of Shakespeare's Lady Macbeth, and I enjoyed reading her portrayals of Macbethad and Duncan. 📚 Both Gruoch and the reader know that Gruoch will eventually become queen but, not being familiar with Lady Macbeth's origin story, I, much like Gruoch, was in the dark as to how she would get there. Throughout Gruoch's journey, Schuler kept me on the edge of my seat and even had me rooting for one of literature's most reviled villains. By the end, I actually found myself understanding why Duncan might deserve his demise and wishing for a sequel... 📚

a book that deserves more hype... i read lady macbethad earlier this year and i’m still not over it. it is easily one of my absolute favourite books of all time and my favourite read of this year, and it needs to be talked about more!!! i loved the way Isabelle Schuler took us through Grouch’s (Lady Macbeth) life, from her young age and into adulthood. it was so interesting to see her grow into the amazing woman she became, but her unyielding determination remained the same throughout. she is driven, she is strong, and she will stop at nothing to achieve her goal. she has not had it easy, but she made the best out of every hard circumstances and came out even stronger. she is a truly amazing character and i will definitely be rereading this in the future. p.s. swipe to see its aesthetic! • #ladymacbethad #ladymacbeth #historicalfiction #historicalfictionbooks #shakespeare #bookrecommendations #bookrecommendation #bookphotography #booksbooksbooks #aestheticbooks #viralpost #bloomsburypublishing #isabelleschuler #bookblogger #bookreview #bookreader #bookreviewer

QUEEN HEREAFTER [ #partner @harperperennial ; #IsabelleSchuler ] 👑🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 The reimagining of the Lady Macbeth origin story, and an epic tale wrapped in a small package, which, honestly took me longer than it “should” simply because I kept savoring it for the subway or those quiet moments before yoga begins! 👑🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Set in the very beginnings of medieval Scotland - sweeping back and forth between regions, rich with a fantastic matrix of complex and delicious characters - who, (get this) are based on actual historical figures who seem to have inspired the original story of the Macbeths. Gruoch receives a prophecy as a young girl from her grandmother, a Druidic priestess, which spurs her to do anything it takes to find her path to the throne. 👑🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 As someone who has spent a good deal of time in my studies on this character- whether through work on Shakespeare’s monologues and scenes 🎭, or in the performing of Verdi’s arias 🎶 - this story gave me so much understanding in the way to look, not only at Lady Macbeth’s motives, but also her relationship with Macbeth. I always struggled with wrapping my brain around whether there was love there and if so, in what expression of their actions… 👑🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 An excellent escape-read for lovers of history, Shakespeare, tales of ancient Scotland or stories of powerful women - this is not a “light” read - there is violence, jealousy, cruelty, but yet *just* the right amount of steamy passion 🙃Can highly recommend, and somehow it feels seasonally appropriate? ❄️ 👑🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 What’s everyone up to today? I’m feeling grateful and a bit innig, though missing my family and quite a few friends who traveled out of the city this year (atypical to our usual!) A day of puppy/kitty-snuggles 🐶🐈‍⬛, books in bed📖, and cozy festive hot bevvies over here.🍶🧸 . . . . . #bookreview #bookstoread #ladymacbeth #books #reading #ilovetoread #whattoread #winterreads #readinglist #readingtime #girlswhoread #cozy #medieval #goodbooks #bookstagram #booklover #booknerd #heatherboazhere

#ichladymacbeth #isabelleschuler #heyneverlag #adventskalender #buchtipp #bendorferbuchladen #buchhandlung #buchladen #bendorf #nordbuch #igreads #bibliophile #booknerd #ilovebooks #buchliebe #bookstagrammer #bücher #lesenmachtglücklich

Queen Hereafter by Isabelle Schuler Rating: 7/10 Good for: ✨Game of Thrones court drama ✨Fans of Circe ✨Political marriages ✨Spanning two religions Why: Reimaginings are slippery things. There’s many pitfalls; modern views, unlikely saviors and unexplained plot holes, to name a few. Queen Hereafter manages to avoid many of them, and creates a singular character in Gruoch - better known as Lady Macbeth. Thanks to @harperperennial for the #gifted copy! A wide ranging book, we follow Gruoch from childhood through adolescence and early adulthood. Her early years are marked by political power plays in which she is only a pawn. It pains me to write, but it wasn’t until Gruoch got married that the plot picked up. Once she is able to wield power on her own, pieces start to fall together, and her own schemes play out. Almost a mirror to Romeo and Juliet, Queen Hereafter is shadowed by the outcome of events in Macbeth, even if the book has a happy ending. As a minor Shakespeare reader, I know I missed many easter eggs throughout, though I did enjoy seeing Duncan and Macbeth play significant roles in this prequel. Nonetheless in Macbeth, Lady Macbeth is the easy villain - conniving, full of bad advice and power hungry, she’s easy to scoff at. Gruoch, on the other hand, has milder traits - full of self regard, she’s simply trying to survive, and is unapologetic for who she needs to destroy to secure her own safety. While the beginning was slow, I enjoyed Gruoch’s mechanizations in the later half of the book. While not as elaborate as Game of Thrones, the court drama and betrayals were incredibly entertaining. For anyone looking for a reimagining of medieval Scotland, Queen Hereafter is a great pick.

Lady MacBethad by Isabelle Schuler ⭐️ I highly recommend this epic for historical fiction lovers. There’s something about that feeling you get when you read a book so captivating, and with characters so utterly enthralling that you power through it in a day or two. What a marvellous book this is, based on the real life Queen who inspired one of Shakespeare’s most well known characters. Take me back to Alba and the second century. Power, vengeance, lust, longing, and one woman’s singleminded ambition - Gruoch is a magnificent character. ( and MacBethad is pretty scintillating too). I’m currently completely invested in investigating my Scottish and Pictish ancestry! A brilliant debut! @bloomsburypublishing and seeking a follow up! #readersofinstagram #greathistoricalfiction #mustread #debutfiction #isabelleschuler

#birgitempfiehlt : Isabelle Schuler, "Ich, Lady Macbeth", erschienen bei @penguinradmdomhouse / Heyne _____________________ #werbung #isabelleschuler #ichladymacbeth #bookstagram #instabooks #instareads #igreads #booksofinstagram #booktok #lesen #buecherliebe #buchblogger #reading #lesenmachtglücklich #buchempfehlung #leseliebe #rezension #booknerd #buchtipp #lesenswert #booklove #neunkirchenseelscheid #rheinsiegkreis #neunkirchen #seelscheid #supportyourlocalbookshop #buchhandlunglöffelholz #buchhandlungloeffelholz #buylocal

#LadyMacBethad #IsabelleSchuler #Umbriel #Libros #LibrosRecomendados #HistoricalFiction #FicciónHistórica

Book Rec Time! #repost • @booksonmysidetable Side Table Exit Survey :: #QueenHereafter by #IsabelleSchuler ( #gifted @harperperennial @bibliolifestyle) 👑 READ IF YOU LIKE... • Fictional retellings of the lives of prominent women • Royal court politics 👑 I THOUGHT IT WAS... A solidly engaging fictional account of the rise of Gruoch, queen of Scotland and the famous #LadyMacbeth from the Shakespeare play. As a young girl, Gruoch's mystical grandmother hands her a prophecy proclaiming her future greatness. Ambitious and intelligent, Gruoch spends her life striving to make that prophecy come true by navigating the trickiness of court politics. This novel follows the feminist retelling formula to a tee -- it features a smart and capable protagonist willing to do anything to make a name for herself, forced to overcome weak, undeserving men in power in order to achieve her goal. Fortunately, while the pattern is familiar, the story itself was interesting and well written enough to keep me reading. I loved the twists and turns, and I found myself eagerly looking forward to how Gruoch would find her way out of each dangerous situation thrust her way. One thing to note: This novel does not cover any of the events that happen in the Shakespeare play. Rather, you could think of this book as a fictionalized version of Lady MacBeth's backstory before the events of the play take place. 👑 This book is out now. • • • • #booksonmysidetable #bookstagram #bookworm #bookcommunity #bookstagrammer #booknerd #goodreads #booklover #bookphotography #readersofinstagram #bookaholics #booklove #ilovereading #bookaesthetic #bookstafam #bibliolifestyle #oliveinfluencer
