I loved following Victoria through her life and watching as she processed the ripple effect of the first chapter. go as a river🌿🍑🦢 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ — this was such a beautiful written story! not what i was expecting, but still really enjoyable! if you are a fan of where the crawdads sing like i am, this book has a similar theme in terms of connection to nature, which you might really love 🫶🏼 this was just released in february and basically every goodreads review is a five or four star! only complaint i really had with the book was that i picked it up hoping for the male lead to be an equal protagonist, especially since it’s rare to see indigenous representation in novels like this, but he is not a main character. this is more of an issue with the way the book was marketed that the novel itself, but it hindered my enjoyment slightly, just be aware, it’s very much victoria’s story :) (please note to check tw before reading) — #goasariver #bookstagram #wherethecrawdadssing #ifyoulikedthisreadthis
아직 5월이지만 일단은 올해 읽은 책 중 최고의 소설. 바쁜 와중에 이 책을 읽느라 며칠을 새벽을 넘겨 잠들었다. 정가가 1만 7천원인데 이 가격에 이렇게 아름다운 이야기를 들어도 되나 싶을 정도로 돈이 아깝지 않았던 작품이다. 복숭아 그림이 그려진 표지에서 알 수 있듯이 소설은 복숭아 과수원을 주무대로 한다. 복숭아같은 달콤한 사랑에서 시작해 아무리 부셔버리고 싶어도 부셔버릴 수 없는 딱딱한 복숭아 씨같은 상처가 이어진다. 복숭아는 겉으로 봤을 때는 너무나 탐스럽고 예쁘지만 속 안에는 아주 딱딱하고 큰 씨가 있다. 아마 누구나 그런 딱딱한 복숭아 씨 하나 즈음 가지고 사는게 인생이 아닐까 한다. 겉으로 보기에는 행복해 보이고 좋아 보이지만 상처 하나 없는 사람이 아닐까. “세상에는 슬픔을 넘어서는 슬픔, 펄펄 끓는 시럽처럼 아주 미세한 틈으로도 스며들어 버리는 그런 슬픔이 있다. 세상을 바꿔버리는 슬픔” 저마다 슬픔이 묻어 있는 것은 너무나 당연하지만 결국 모든 것은 흐르는 강물처럼 자연스럽게 흘러간다. 그것이 인생이다. “강물처럼 나 역시 다른 존재들과 이어주는 작은 조각들을 모으면서 살아왔고 그렇게 여기까지 왔다.”(제목이 흐르는 강물처럼인 이유가 아닐까.) “나는 하루하루 내가 선택한 삶을 만들어나가고 있었고, 그건 좋은 삶이었다. 내게 없는 것을 누구보다 잘 알고 있지만 동시에 내 앞에 놓인 것들에 감사했다.” “우리 삶은 지금을 지나야만 그다음이 펼쳐진다. 지도가 없고 초대장이 없더라도 눈 앞에 펼쳐진 공간으로 걸어 나가야만 한다.” ✔️브레드 피트 주연의 영화와는 전혀 상관이 없습니다. 😂 ✔️mbc충북 강가희의 브런치북에서 소개했습니다. #강추 #인생책 #올해의소설 #흐르는강물처럼 #셸리리드 #복숭아 #소설추천 #강가희 #다산책방 #라디오 #mbc충북 #북튜버 #goasariver

If you are beginning to look at holiday reads, please consider this one. At 300 pages, it kicks you in the guts with a heart-wrenching tale of prejudice and resilience. Initially, a love story, then something much, much deeper, which will render the reader speechless. Go As A River ⭐️⭐️1/2 🍑 This is a hard review for me to write. I chose this for @nightoffbookclub after reading many reviews. And I’m incredibly disappointed. The writing is superior. There is no denying that the beautiful details of landscape and prose are excellent. Almost elegant. But the story. Is so dismal and sad. Nothing about it excited me. It was one hardship and tragedy after another. I felt like this was a cross between The Four Winds and Where the Crawdads Sing. I love feeling educated about Iola, CO. I like when I step away from a book feeling as if I’ve learned something. It is sad to think that entire towns were simply “evacuated” and people had to give up all they had known for generations. But along with educated, this story left me feeling depressed. There was very little joy. #carpelibrum #goasariver #shelleyread #흐르는강물처럼 #셀리리드장편소설 #영미소설 #다산책방 #책속의문장📖 기억난다. 코로나 첫해, 봄학기 시작 전 질병에 대한 두려움이 펴지면서, 처음으로 학원이 휴원에 들어가게 되었고 가르치기로 한 학생들 반을 받기도 전에 카톡이나 문자로 과제를 내면서 인사를 드리던 차 한 학부모님이 나의 SNS 활동등을 보셨다고 북클럽이나 책읽기 좋아하시네요 하시면서 추천 주셨던 책이 델리아 오언스의 첫작품이라고 믿기지 못할 만큼 흡입력 있던 『가재가 노래하는곳』이였는데, 샐리 리드의 첫소설인 『흐르는 강물처럼』이 추천될 때 『가재가 노래하는곳』 과『앵무새 죽이기』의 클래식한면이 보인다고 강조가 되어져서 어떤부분이 연관이 있을까 궁금해졌던 책이다. 언급된 두권의 소설에서 보이는 인종차별과 편견, 화이트트래쉬라고 못사는 백인가정과 빈부를 통해서 사람을 판단하는 편견이 묘사되고, 두권모두 인간사의 어두운면이 있어도 아름다운 자연묘사에서는 치유를 받는 등장인물들을 안다면 『 흐르는강물』에서 주인공 17살 빅토리아가 독실한 기독교 신자이면서 집의 기둥 같은 엄마와 가장 친한 사촌이지만 천사 같은 큰오빠 캘과 이모의 죽음 이후 순종적으로 엄마의 빈자리를 맡아서 약간은 악마가 연상되는 동생 세스와 전쟁부상으로 다리를 잃은 후 악마처럼 마음이 비틀린 이모부 그리고 상실감을 같이 공유하지도 못하고 주어진 일만하는 아빠와 생활하다 운명처럼 마을에 나타난 이방인인 윌슨 문을 만나서 첫사랑을 느끼지만, 그냥 풋풋한 사랑이면 얼마나 좋을까 하지만 윌슨 문이 ‘인전’ 즉 인디언을 비하하는 말이라는 것을 알게 되고 그의 낯선 피부색 때문에 마을 여관에서 쫓겨나고 도둑으로 몰려도 그녀 곁에 있고 싶어서 마을에 남다가 피부가 벗겨져 시신으로 협곡에 버려 진후 짧은 기간이지만 강렬하게 그녀에게 ‘흐르는 강물처럼 살거야’라는 윌슨 문의 말이 만트라처럼 내적 힘으로 사랑을 상실하여도 견뎌내게 하였다. 그 이후 ‘흐르는 강물처럼 산다는 것’이 모든 어려움을 이겨내게 하는 힘이 되어주었지만 그녀자신은 그 사실을 모른 채 혼자 고지대 도망가서 아이를 낳고 아이를 전혀 모르는 우연히 본 신혼부부 차안에 남기고 집으로 돌아와서 저수지개발로 인해 집을 팔게 되고 새로운 곳에서 집안대대로 이어온 내시 복숭아를 다시 심고 기다리며 복숭아를 재배하는 과정에서 그녀만의 슬픔 그리고 포기할수밖에 없던 아들의 존재를 알게 되기까지 이 소설에서 자연은 정말 눈에 그려질 만큼 아름답고 인간이 만들어낸 인위적 고통들 전쟁, 편견, 무지, 멸시 등을 잊게 만들만큼 아름다운 소설이다. 첫 소설이라고 믿기지 않을 만큼 등장인물 묘사나 자연묘사 그리고 내적으로 빅토리아가 느끼는 감정과 고통 특히 십대에 홀로 고산지대 산막에서 아이가 나올 때까지 홀로 지내는 부분묘사는 정말 절절하다. 요즘시대에 보기드문 이렇게 복고적풍을 잘 살려서 이야기속에 빠져들게 하는 고전 냄새 나는 신작이라는 말에 동감하는 책이다. “세스 같은 사람들은 밤하늘의 별보다 더 많아.” 내 말을 듣지 않겠다는 의사와 날 안심시키려는 의도가 담긴 대답이었다. 그러나 안심은커녕 불안만 커지고 말았다. 그건 윌의 말이 부인할 수 없는 사실이었기 때문이다. 윌이 이곳을 떠나 어디로 간다 한들 세스 같은 사람이 없겠는가? 어디로 간들 세스처럼 분노로 가득한 사람, 피부색이 어둡다는 이유만으로 괴롭히려는 사람이 없겠는가? 윌은 도망칠 생각이 전혀 없었다. “흐르는 강물처럼 살 거야. 우리 할아버지가 늘 그러셨거든. 방법은 그뿐이라고.” _143쪽 거대하고 신비로운 태피스트리로 장식된 숲속의 집에서 잠을 청할 때면 숲의 심장이 뛰는 소리, 주변의 무수한 생명이 숨을 들이쉬고 내쉬며 나와 함께 호흡하는 소리밖에 들리지 않았다. 밤이 두렵지 않은 건 살면서 처음이었다. _188쪽 그동안 나는 지난날의 선택을 끊임없이 돌아보며 의심했다. 그러나 우리 삶은 지금을 지나야만 그다음이 펼쳐진다. 그러므로 우리는 지도가 없고 초대장이 없더라도 눈앞에 펼쳐진 공간으로 걸어 나가야만 한다. 그건 윌이 가르쳐주고, 거니슨강이 가르쳐주고, 내가 생사의 갈림길을 수없이 마주했던 곳인 빅 블루가 끊임없이 가르쳐준 진리였다. _281쪽

📖 BOOK REVIEW - GO AS A RIVER by Shelley Reid 📖 So this book has had a lot of comparisons to Crawdads, and as one of my favourite books, made me a bit nervous going in. The truth is however, while it does have a similar vibe, Go As A River is a fantastic book in its own right and very much deserves to be recognised as such. I adored it! Beginning in late 1940s Colorado, Teenager Victoria is the only female in her household following the death of her mother and spends her time caring for her ungrateful and broken male relatives on their Peach Farm. When she meets Wilson Moon, they instantly fall in love but the town don’t approve of his Native American heritage and tragedy is again just around the corner This book is just stunning. It’s raw, brutal, tragic and hopeful all at once. It tackles topics of race, trauma, motherhood and war. The use of the landscape sweeps from inhospitable to bountiful to match perfectly with Victoria’s own experience taking the reader on a journey of despair and hope. I love when a setting really brings a story to life and in that aspect I was reminded of Crawdads. 🍑BOOK REVIEW🍑 Go as a River by Shelley Read ⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 Very unpopular opinion here, but I was really not crazy about this book. I feel like giving it three stars is kind of generous, honestly. I found it to be so extremely slow. A lot of people told me that it was slow but worth it; however, I have to disagree. This was not some kind of satisfying slow burn, it was just boring. It did kind of pick up toward the end, but it was still not anything that held my attention well at all. The writing style itself was also very disconnecting for me. I did not really feel any emotion for these characters. At one point the MC makes a brutal, heart-wrenching decision...and I felt absolutely nothing because of the disconnected way in which it was written. Lastly, I don't think there was much plot! If I were to really plot this out on a diagram, I'm not really sure what the climax even was. 오늘은 글보다 그림이 주인공 . 서일코를 다녀오고, 그림을 안그릴수가 없었다. . 그림은 [go as a river]의 한국어버전. 감사하게도 영어 원서 책서평에 당첨되어버렸다...! . 영어로 된 책 눈빠지게 읽으면서 뭔가 리듬이 생기고 있다 껄껄. 나도 이제 영어를 잘하게 되는걸까? . 모르는 단어 스킵하다보면 한 30프로만 읽고 있는것 같지만… 암턴 <흐르는 강물처럼> 분위기가 원서 표지에서 잘 담았다는 생각이 든다(아 물론 한국어로 된 책은 아직 못읽어봄… 뭔가 복숭아 같은거 그려졌던데) 한국어버전은 이제 막 빅토리아랑 윌이 사랑에 빠지기 시작한 장면같은데(알고보니 주인공 이름도 틀린거 아녀..?).. 한국어 번역서엔 그 풋풋함을 담은것 같기도 하고! 근데 복숭아는 나에게 콜미바이유어네임의 인상이 너무 강해서…호 어쨌든 한국어 책으로도 이게 어울리는거 같아서 사부작 그림. . 그나저나 오늘 서일코는 진짜 성황리였는데, 너무너무 대단한 작가들이 많았는데, 한번만 보고가라는 그 말이 왜이렇게 미안한지, 이 훌륭한 선생님들이...!바쁘다바빠 현대사회에서 자기pr은 필수인가 싶으면서도, 왠지 송구스러워졌다. 그래서 눈도 못마주치고 그림들만 보고, (사진도 거의 못찍고) 와버림…! 그럼에도 (시류에 휩쓸리는 나라는 놈) 나도 매일매일 글을 쓰고, 그림을 그려야지- 이러면서 글을 올리고 있다 껄껄 암튼 아침부터 굉장히 바쁘다 바빠 홍길동 찍고, 애기들 다담주까지 자화상 그려내야하는걸 오늘 알아버려서, 마음 바쁘지만, 굉장히 비장해지고 좋네 그려! 오늘은 깊은 사유 없디만 일기 끗! #그림스타그램 #글스타그램 #goasariver #흐르는강물처럼 @penguinrandomhouse_korea

#흐르는강물처럼 #셸리리드 ⠀ 📝 성장소설을 좋아하는 나에게 취향저격이었던 책. 분위기가 비슷한 [가재가 노래하는 곳]이 많이 언급되던데 나는 이 책이 더 좋았다(물론 ’가재‘도 좋았음). 초반의 사랑 이야기보다는 후반부에 주인공이 성장해나가면서 자연과 함께 삶을 일구어 나가는 부분이 특히 더 기억에 남는다. ⠀ 🔖415 숲은 내게 말했다. 모든 존재를 그 자체로 가치 있게 만들어주는 건, 바로 겹겹이 쌓인 시간의 층이라고. 그랬다. 젤다의 말이 옳았다. 내 과수원이 그랬듯 나 역시 새로운 토양에서 다시 시작할 수 있는 회복력을 가지고 있었고, 내 의지와 관계없이 뿌리째 뽑히고도 어떻게든 살아왔다. 그러나 셀 수 없을 만큼 흔들리고, 넘어지고, 무너지고, 두려움에 웅크린 것도 사실이다. 그러면서 나는 강인함은 이 어수선한 숲 바닥과 같다는 걸 배웠다. 강인함은 작은 승리와 무한한 실수로 만들어진 숲과 같고, 모든 걸 쓰러뜨린 폭풍이 지나가고 햇빛이 내리쬐는 숲과 같다. 우리는 넘어지고, 밀려나고, 다시 일어난다. 그리고 최선을 희망하며 예측할 수 없는 조각들을 모아가며 성장한다. 이토록 아름다운 방식으로 성장한다는 것 하나만으로 우리 모두는 함께였다.

Title: Go As A River Author: Shelley Read Rating: 4.5/5 If you like action-packed stories that rush you from one page to the next, this is not the book for you. But if a slow-paced narration with beautiful descriptions of nature, then “Go As A River” will definitely be a favorite read. The story starts with a chance encounter between the main character, Victoria Nash, and Wilson Moon. The problem with this first love is that Wilson is Native American, and this is 1948 in a small town in Colorado - a recipe for disaster. So when tragedy strikes and Victoria finds herself alone and pregnant, it is a hard choice she faces. And yet, through heartbreak and pain and fear she’s still able to pull through and make a life for herself, always solitary, always longing, but a strong character nonetheless. The only thing perhaps that could have made the book better was a bit more about the history of the time: going from 1948 to 1971, the book covers a lot of ground in terms of American and world history. “… what does it mean to lead your life as if it were a river - gathering and flowing, finding a way toward even when the river is dammed.” I had not heard much about Go As A River prior to putting it on hold at the library. But hearing that parts of the story are by true events had me interested enough to read it. Split into different parts, Go As A River tells the story of Victoria Nash over the decades of her life. In between her families peach orchard, is her love, and loss alongside her trials and successes. It was such a powerful story packed into 300 pages and ended entirely too soon. I could have used another few chapters. The novel is set in Iola Colorado, a character all its own, which was destroyed in the 1960s. This tied into the characters and fictional story of the book so well. After finishing the book I found myself looking up so much about Iola and the people there during this time. This was a debut novel by Shelley Read, and I cannot wait to see what she writes next.

КНИГА З АРОМАТОМ ПЕРСИКІВ🍑 Шеллі Рід "Шлях ріки" Роман, натхненний реальними подіями, а саме знищенням міста Айола в 1960-х роках. Вона була хорошою, чемною, послужливою дівчинкою. Шанобливо ставилася до дорослих, читала Біблію, тримала будинок у чистоті, годувала чоловіків своєї родини, прала, доглядала за господарством. Не ставила багато запитань. Ніколи ні перед ким не плакала. А потім випадково зустріла ЙОГО...замурзаного незнайомця, і закохалася. Про НЬОГО ми багато не дізнаємося, окрім того, що це індіанець. І тут, друзі, маєте самі погуглити про расизм в Америці 20 сторіччя, якщо хочете заглибитися в історію. Бо книга написана гарно (з цим важко посперечатися, автор 30 років викладала в університеті письменницьку майстерність), але досить поверхнево, як на мене. І ось налаштувалася я на довгу і красиву історію кохання, але отримала "Вілсон Мун став моїм коханцем" і дві скупенькі сторіночки любовних втіх юних закоханих. Далі у книзі розгортаються трагічні обставини, які штовхають головну героїню на відчайдушний вчинок. Але саме наслідки цього вчинку і подальше життя героїні мене і відштовхнули від цієї історії. Наголошую, не вчинок героїні, а подальший її шлях. У книгу напхано багато кліше про жіночу стійкість, силу духу, тернистий шлях, який героїня "долає" все своє життя. Але на короткому епізоді про виживання у лісі не можна тягнути всю історію про силу духу, особливо коли весь подальший шлях героїні говорить про протилежне. Як мама, я не змогла збагнути шлях, який обрала героїня. І нехай мене пробачать шанувальники цієї книги, але за персики героїня переживала більше, ніж за своє дитя. Кого заінтригував відгук - сміливо беріться за книгу, адже багатьом вона дуже сподобалася. I read this book last year, and it was so beautifully written. I was surprised to find that it was Shelley Read’s debut novel. It’s a really evocative story that follows a strong female character throughout several decades of loss, tragedy, and resilience. The prose was gorgeous and the story had me emotionally invested. 10/10 would recommend. It really should have gotten more hype because it’s so much more memorable than a lot of the books that flood bookstagram feeds. Ставши єдиною жінкою у сім’ї вона взяла на себе всю роботу по господарству та допомагала батькові утримувати персикову ферму. Одного дня, сімнадцятирічна дівчинка зустрічає хлопця-індіанця. [На той час індіанці були відіслані зі своїх земель у резервації. Годі й казати, що їх поява у місті була небажаною] Молоді люди закохуються один у одного усією душею. Але навіть звичайне їх спілкування було приречено на жорсткий осуд. Тому тут починається зовсім інша історія. Історія Вікторії, якій доведеться відчути самотнє життя серед дикої природи, горе, біль втрат, злість і безпорадність через людські упередження і несправедливість. Але написана вона просто неймовірно! Описи природи і побуту детальні, але не тиснуть і не відволікають. Їх стільки, щоб передати атмосферу часу і місця. Стільки, щоб наче наживо побачити приголомшливі краєвиди річок, гір, лісів і відчути аромат персикового саду. Окрема вдячність перекладачці. Бо від перекладу залежить сприйняття історії, а тут він чудовий. Щемка, незабутня історія і одна з кращих книг, прочитаних мною з початку року. Рекомендую однозначно!❤️

•Go As A River by Shelley Read• ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ “The landscapes of our youth create us, and we carry them within us, storied by all they gave and stole, in who we become.” Go As A River was a beautifully written, absolutely emotionally heartbreaking read. From the first chapter we were falling in love as a seventeen year old for the first time and we were feeling the desperation right alongside Victoria as she grows into womanhood. I understand that this was Victoria’s story, and not Inga or Lukas’s, but I would have liked to know more about their years together too. Same with Seth. Did he ever really change, or was he the same as always? Regardless, this book was amazing. While it was a heartbreaking story, I enjoyed how it all unfolded. What I Liked: ▪️ Shelley Read’s writing is so beautiful and lyrical. ▪️ The details of settings and scenes really helped the story come alive. ▪️ The story, at its roots, was so sad, but I loved how Victoria learned so much about herself through every heartbreaking thing she endured. ▪️ While I would have loved a more resolute ending to Victoria’s story, I did enjoy how her storyline and Inga’s intertwined and that the ending had a bit of hope and encouragement to it. Kyyneleet nousi kyllä silmiin muutamaankin otteeseen, mutta silti kerronta onnistui olemaan kevyttä, enkä menettänyt toivoa missään vaiheessa. Ehkä keveyden loi Victorian arkinen, yksinkertainen tapa elää vaikeuksista huolimatta, tai sitten luonnon vahva läsnäolo, josta kerta toisensa jälkeen haettiin voimia. Toisaalta muhun 1900-luvun amerikkalainen maaseutu miljöönä tehoaa melkein aina, joten melkein tiesin kirjan tekevän vaikutuksen jo siihen tarttuessani. Kirjan käsittämä pitkä aikahaarukka loi siihen hienoista hajanaisuutta, ja tuntui, että joitakin asioita jäi sanomatta tai niistä sanottiin liian vähän. Mulle “ympyrän sulkeutuminen” myös sivuhahmojen tarinoiden kohdalla on aika tärkeää, mutta voin antaa tän anteeksi ajattelemalla, että hahmot yksinkertaisesti virtasivat pois päähenkilön elämästä sillä hetkellä kuin pitikin. I was immediately captivated by this book because Read’s writing style was absolutely beautiful; a perfect balance of both simplicity and profundity. I was dripping off her words like a bee clamouring for honey. At its essence this is a story about a girl’s journey from adolescence to womanhood, but Read weaves the fabric of Victoria’s life in such a masterful way that the character growth we witness as readers is nothing short of transformative. Each and every stage of Victoria’s life was explored in such a raw, authentic way and her resilience and selflessness radiated through every chapter of her life. The pace of this book, whilst slow, wonderfully reflected how the decades of Victoria’s life ebbed and flowed with the cruelty, fragility and resilience of a river. Her romance with Wilson Moon was the perfect place to start this story because this was Victoria’s tipping point - her brief meeting with Wilson set off a rippling change of events which determined the course of her life. In many ways her life would have been easier if she’d never met Wilson Moon but what Read conveys so magically is that love, however fleeting it may be, is worth the heartache that inevitably follows. I love how Victoria never felt anything other than blessed to have been able to love and be loved by a man like Wilson. This book was also an exceptional exploration of motherhood, and nothing could have prepared me to the emotional tsunami which was Part 4 of this book. What an exceptional piece of a writing and what a beautiful way to expand what was already a heart-wrenching story. This book had both had nothing to say and everything to say. Despite the grief Victoria experiences this wasn’t a story about loss it was a story about love. Love between mothers, sons, fathers, lovers, friends and the enduring love of nature. It was a story that revelled in the telling. A story sprinkled with profound brilliance and utter devastation.
