Order and Chaos Duology by Alexis L. Menard ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 It’s been so long since I’ve posted so I will keep this short and sweet until I get back into the groove of things again. 🖤BOOK REVIEW🖤 The Ghost Keeper by Natalie Morrill ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫/5 Wow oh wow! This was my May book for @well_read_mom and it just blew me away! I went into it fairly blind with pretty low expectations once I realized it was WWII/Holocaust historical fiction because that is a genre I typically don't enjoy much at all. I'm holding back in giving a full 5 stars because I did find the first half not quite as engaging as I'd like, but the second half more than made up for it. The Ghost Keeper is fascinating because, yes, it is a Holocaust novel that brings up a lot of big-picture ethical questions, but on a micro-level it is also just a story of the complexity of human nature. The "twist" of sorts about 60% in totally had me in a chokehold, and I found it to be superbly effective at adding an extra layer of complication to an already very thought-provoking story. Also, I have to note that this book is exquisitely written. Morrill has a true gift for writing, and I hope that she publishes more novels. This is a book that begs to be discussed, and if I were still in the classroom it is certainly one I'd make required reading. 💙BOOK REVIEW💙 Funny Story by Emily Henry ⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 Say hello to my new least favorite Emily Henry novel 😕 This one just didn't hit right for me at all. I was missing the quintessential EH banter and only laughed out loud 2-3 times. So sad and unusual! I couldn't get a pulse on Miles and Daphne at all, but most especially Miles. I found him to be a really confusing and contradictory character, and I simply couldn't picture him in my mind in any way. As a reader, this is a huge problem and just ultimately causes me to disengage. There were a lot of distractions in this story which seemed clunky rather than purposeful, such as the friendship with Ashleigh and all of the family issues. To clarify, I thought Daphne's feelings toward her father were ok, but I couldn't really jive with Miles' family issues at all. Lastly, the pacing was off for me, as the middle portion of the novel really dragged. To focus on the positives for a moment, I did enjoy that Daphne was a librarian and the read-a-thon at the end was super cute. I also loved the setting and enjoyed the parts when Miles was playing tour guide for Daphne. It really did feel like I was on a Michigan vacation in the best possible way. ...but that's about it. As a friend said when we were discussing this book, it kind of feels like Emily Henry writes the same book over and over and just changes a few details. Unfortunately, that is definitely how I felt with this one. I'm still a Emily Henry fan and plan to read everything she writes!! But this was not at all the dazzling summer novel I was hoping for. Can't We Talk About Something More Pleasant by Roz Chast ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 I bought this book last year, and I didn't have the courage to read it until now. I lost my father when I was way too young and immature to play an active part in his final days, but as my mother now ages, I'm feeling the weight of everything Roz Chast's memoir details. In some ways, this book serves as a how-to manual. In other ways, it feels quite therapeutic if you are in this phase of life. I especially enjoyed Chast's very straightforward grappling with her emotions, particularly toward her mother and their lack of a close relationship. May's pick for #readchristie2024 was The A.B.C. Murders. I was excited to read this book because I consider it one of the "biggies" that I always hear about but had never read. I have to confess that this wasn't my favorite, but I do now have an appreciation for it. I love that it is one of the first instances of a serial killer portrayed in literature, and the killer's method of working through the alphabet was intriguing. Poirot was funnier than usual in this book, so that's always a plus. The ending was super crazy, but I will overlook it for Queen Agatha. Another field journal filled! This is one of the few things I usually post on my personal account, but I wanted to share it here. I always loved this journal when browsing @barnesandnoble over the years but it was too small for my main journal (does anyone else have very specific journal qualifications?) and too large for my typical FJ. But one day I was out and about, and somehow without something to write in. No FJ, no @surface, and I needed the catharsis of pen on paper. My phone wasn’t going to cut it. So I ran into B&N and snagged this, as well as the world’s worst pen. I only wrote 1 1/2 pages in my car on that hot July afternoon, and then it wasn’t until September 2023 that I continued. 💛BOOK REVIEW💛 Summer Romance by Annabel Monaghan ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫/5 Pub date: June 4 Annabel Monaghan can do no wrong as far as I'm concerned. She is 3/3 in writing the sweetest summer love stories that I just can't get enough of. Dare I say that this might be the best one yet?! Summer Romance is more reminiscent of Nora Goes Off Script in terms of the single mom aspect, but it had all the best summer vibes of Same Time Next Summer. I love how this was kind of like friends to lovers but not really. Ethan is a great MMC, and I just loved him (and Brenda!). This novel has a lot of depth, which is what I think I enjoyed the most. I really appreciated Ali's journey with grief. I also liked that through both Ethan and Ali there was a strong message about finding yourself and living the life that you want to be the architect of. Also, there was a lot of humor as well as some great secondary characters, which is always a plus! 🍑BOOK REVIEW🍑 Go as a River by Shelley Read ⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 Very unpopular opinion here, but I was really not crazy about this book. I feel like giving it three stars is kind of generous, honestly. I found it to be so extremely slow. A lot of people told me that it was slow but worth it; however, I have to disagree. This was not some kind of satisfying slow burn, it was just boring. It did kind of pick up toward the end, but it was still not anything that held my attention well at all. The writing style itself was also very disconnecting for me. I did not really feel any emotion for these characters. At one point the MC makes a brutal, heart-wrenching decision...and I felt absolutely nothing because of the disconnected way in which it was written. Lastly, I don't think there was much plot! If I were to really plot this out on a diagram, I'm not really sure what the climax even was. Back then I was in the thick of not reading, but trying to come up with what would become The Rehabilitation of an Anorexic Bookworm. I wanted glass doors to show off my memories and the few books I still had. Years before, I’d sold most of my personal library to make ends meet, and now I’ve built my collection back up to that level. I'm finally back in my Miss Marple era! My BFF @iloveagoodmystery and I are working our way through all the Miss Marple books, but we had put this on pause for a while. I was happy to get back to it with the classic 4:50 from Paddington. This may just be one of my favorites so far! I found the crime to be really intriguing, and the country manor setting plus the "exotic" long barn heightened my interest. The cast of characters was quite manageable for once, and I found them all to be really funny. I never get tired of the flavor of these Miss Marple stories and how much they make me laugh out loud. I do wish Miss Marple had been more at the forefront of the story, but meeting the character of Lucy was great. I wish she had her own series! April reading wrap up! 🙌🏻🙌🏻 My absolute favorite book of the month would have to be Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer. I will always read anything written about Mt. Everest, and this book was an intensely emotional story about the people involved in the 1996 Everest tragedy. Dont come at me but A Court of Thorns and Roses and A Court of Frost and Starlight were at the bottom. As a whole, the ACOTAR series is great. These two books…are not though. ACOTAR is ok, but ACOFS was boring. But A Court of Silver Flames was in my top 5, so don’t hate me too much. Since I already put out some ACOTAR slander-I love Nesta more than Feyre. 🤷🏻♀️ I ended the Throne of Glass series and it honestly is still one of my favorite series of all time. Some honorable mentions… Bride. I devoured that shit in one day. Straight easy to consume slightly smutty entertainment. Serial. A short horror story about a person that picks up a hitchhiker. Two weeks ago I dropped off the books I had out, overdue as I still needed to finish the review for #book17, and accepting a clean slate as those would be the last books I check out from @fcdlibrary for a while. I am so grateful for the opportunity to know my first library better, and revel in the serendipity of it supporting the first ~1.5 chapters of this project. Now that I live in a different town, I am just down the street from a newly renovated @columbuslibrary branch, which will be my local library for hopefully a nice, long time. My @well_read_mom buddy and I are meeting this afternoon to discuss this month's selection: Brideshead Revisited by Evelyn Waugh. This is a classic I've had on my TBR for quite some time, so I was excited for the opportunity to read it, but I have to confess that I just don't even know what to think about it. I am so excited to unpack it together with a friend because there is an abundance of material for discussion. In some ways it reminded me of The Great Gatsby, and in other ways The Age of Innocence, but when I mentioned that to my husband he astutely noted that this book is British in contrast to those two American novels. I think that is a fair point, and in some ways this is perhaps similar to The Remains of the Day in terms of quintessential British themes. 🔭BOOK REVIEW🔭 Bewilderment by Richard Powers ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫/5 This book is a beautiful and emotional powerhouse for which I was not at all prepared. I loved so much about it: the "light" sci-fi themes, the ecocritical aspect, the vivid characterization, particularly of Robin, and the deep emotional well that the story taps into. The book is somewhat slow, but I found it to be a story I wanted to savor, so I didn't mind the pace. There were a few plot points that were left hanging, and that always bothers me. But I think my biggest reservation in making this a 5 star read is that it got too political. I believe an author can truly find balance between opening the reader's eyes to injustice (ecological and scientific in this case) without getting preachy or pushing an agenda; unfortunately it is difficult to find a novel that does this with finesse. Deadly Deceit by Settle Myer Out 4/25!!! ⭐️⭐️⭐️💫/5 A mix of utterly unhinged and deliciously sweet. Noah and Delancy are made for each other in all the best and worst ways. It’s hard not to love the love that these two psychopaths share. I’m a sucker for a plus-sized FMC and Noah is such a badass with her secret job and her jiu-jitsu skills. Noah and Delancy have a bit of an interesting start between his stalking/obsession to a rivals-to-lovers situation but they are a perfect match for one another. The storyline drew me in right away and the mystery of their mothers’ murders had me up reading later than I should have been. I did find some aspects of the book to be a little repetitive for my taste and I was not a fan of a certain part towards the end that essentially gave away the twist at the very end. I’m not sure if it was meant to be foreshadowing or if the author intended to give it away but it ruined the ending for me unfortunately. It was a fun read and I loved the two main characters, I will always have a soft spot for an FMC like Noah. 🚂 Murder on the Orient Express by Agatha Christie 🚂 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 I went rogue for this month's #readchristie2024 challenge because I'd already read the official pick of The Murder at the Vicarage. I recently found a copy of the famous Murder on the Orient Express at Half Price Books, so it seemed perfect. I totally get why this book is worth all the hype!!! It is a complete masterwork! By the time I got to Part 3 when Poirot solves the crime, my heart was beating so fast, and I simply could not put the book down. I was so blown away by the solution -- all hail Queen Agatha! It reminded me in many ways of And Then There Were None, which is another 5 star Christie as far as I'm concerned. I'm not usually the biggest Poirot fan, but he really shone in this book, and I loved seeing his "little grey cells" at work. Definitely read this one if you are a mystery fan! P.S. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫/5 Out tomorrow 4/23!!! A dark, yet whimsical story filled with intrigue, deceit, and death. This darker, steamier, Caraval-like story made me feel like I was wrapped up in the drama right there with the characters. Dey is such a unique soul and from the beginning, I held her close to my heart and knew that I never wanted anything to hurt her. I should have known better. Dey goes through hell and back, literally and figuratively, and I’m so glad that a lot of justice was served toward the end of the book. I found myself invested in not only our main characters but the side characters as well. The found family aspect of this was so heartwarming and had me tearing up at multiple points throughout the story. I can’t wait to see more of them in the following books. One downside for me personally was the amount of information and plot twists that we are hit within the last 25% of the book. It was a lot for me to take in and had me reading parts over again to make sure I understood what was happening. It did its job though and has me fully invested in reading book two to find out what the heck happened! I greatly enjoy this book and recommend it to anyone looking for found family, secrets, banter, and a lot of “my wife”. 🩵 BOOK REVIEW 🩵 Darling Girls by Sally Hepworth ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 Pub Date: April 23 I enjoy Sally Hepworth's novels, and I would classify her writing as domestic suspense. The content is never too heavy, and often there is some much-appreciated humor sprinkled in, but you still want to keep turning the pages. Darling Girls is no different in that regard. At first, I was somewhat disinterested in the book because I (wrongly) assumed that I already knew where the story was headed. Eventually, though, several twists came, including a great twist at the end, and the book won me over. While nothing was totally jaw-dropping, it was still a fun ride. For me, the best part of this book were the characters. Each one was very distinct and well-developed, particularly the three "sisters" and Miss Fairchild. Hepworth excels in bringing them to life and peeling back the layers behind why each woman has the struggles that she does. They were all very lifelike and relatable in one way or another, and the final chapters tie everything together so nicely in terms of their personal narratives. ✈️WILD AT HEART by K.A. Tucker🏕 ⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 Let's start with the positives: this book had more of the same content that I loved from The Simple Wild, namely all the Alaska details and Jonah + Calla chemistry. I also enjoyed the found family aspect. But as the book it went on it just started to feel way too long without much really happening. I mean, yeah, on some level I liked seeing Calla decorate her new house, but there's only so much I need to know. On a deeper level, I just felt like this story was kind of watered down from everything that made book #1 so good. Calla wasn't really as much of a square peg in a round hole as she was in The Simple Wild, and even when she had her moments of struggling to be a city girl in the Alaskan bush, it was quickly resolved and brushed off. I kept waiting for something really exciting or dangerous to happen, and that never came until the very end, which was odd placement in my opinion. Even more than that, if we want to be serious for a minute (as well as vague in order to avoid spoilers), there were some serious moments of conflict or red flags in Jonah and Calla's relationship which were quickly resolved with a simple conversation. I'm just not buying it. This was a fun read, but just didn't hit quite the same as the first book. ARC Review for Entangled by Vera Kane Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️💫/5 Spice: 🌶️🌶️🌶️/5 A desire to escape what you’ve been born into can be stronger than any other emotion, even love. Soren has been sheltered all of her life and the moment she has an opportunity to find some freedom the only person willing to give it to her dies. She is left with a cruel stepmother and then sold to an arranged marriage. She is a shell of the person she was until she meets him. Kade knows that the life he was born into is not what he wants. He doesn’t have a choice though, as the son of a mafia don he has several expectations on his shoulders, and leaving his family behind to start a new life is not one of them. He never thought he could have happiness in his life until he met her. This was a great easy read for me. I enjoyed both main characters and loved how much growth they both had in a short amount of time. Something unique about this book that I don’t see much in mafia romances is the desire to leave the life they have been born into. I enjoyed that about both characters, it was refreshing and had me hoping throughout the book that they truly got their happily ever after. The only downside for me was how quick it was. I would have loved to see more of their budding relationship and more of the post warehouse fallout but I understand why it wasn’t there. Entangled is a fairly light mafia romance with a good mix of plot and spice! The Caretaker by Ron Rash ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫/5 If Ron Rash writes it, I am going to read it. I love him as an Appalachian author and usually appreciate the beautiful simplicity of his stories. That being said, I have noticed a trend with his novels where they really just need to be short stories (and I'd argue that his short stories are where he truly shines). I don't know if he is contracted for so many full-length novels or what, but this is a recurring critique of mine. The Caretaker felt exactly the same in this regard. The basic story about the title character, Blackburn Gant, was excellent. Rash created such a deep and interesting character in only a few pages, and I loved seeing his personal story unfold. But in reality this book is about the doomed relationship between Jacob and Naomi. I liked that storyline a lot too, but when I finished the book and really stood back to evaluate, it seemed somewhat superfluous. This all sounds very negative, though, when in reality I really enjoyed this book. It truly had me on the edge of my seat, especially toward the end, as I waited to see if the big trick at the heart of the book would actually work. Baby's first book signing!! But seriously, I've been a bookworm for decades but have never met an author in-person 🫢 That all changed last night when I was able to meet Sarah Adams!! She is just the sweetest, and I love how down to earth she is, both here on the gram and in real life. I'm still kind of a romcom newbie, but her books are some of the best I've read. I'm excited to now have personalized copies on my shelf! It was also great to hang out with my old pal @readbelievelove and meet @christinareadsontheroad face to face! 🎧 Audiobook Quick Takes 🎧 I have been jamming through some thrillers on audio lately! Here are some quick takes on three I recently finished: 🎧 The Woman on the Ledge by Ruth Mancini This one definitely kept me engaged, but at times it had so many layers and twists that I got a bit lost. I also found the overall premise for the crime (once fully revealed) to be way too far-fetched for my personal tastes. 🎧 Murder in the Family by Cara Hunter I loved this book! I thought the concept was SO unique, and I actually loved doing it on audio because of the full cast. The pacing was excellent, and the twists were *chef's kiss.* My only personal complaint is that the final solution uses one of my most-hated thriller tropes. 🎧 Safe by S.K. Barnett Buckle up ladies and gents because this is the best thriller I've read in a VERY long time. I binged it in less than 24 hours - I don't think I've done that since reading Jennifer Hillier's Little Secrets! This book has so many jaw-dropping twists, and I loved them all. I have finally read this Booksta darling, and I can say I fully support the hype!! I liked When in Rome, but I LOVED Practice Makes Perfect! How much did I love it? Let me count the ways! 🌸 The most perfect small-town vibes (which seemed much more prominent in this book than When in Rome) 🌸 Will's tattoos 🥵 🌸 The sibling bonds 🌸 All the romance novel jokes and nods 🌸 SICK CARETAKING 🌸 Annie's character development It's this last one that really got me. Annie is a character with whom I empathize so, so much. I mean, hi! I was always a straight-A student, pastor's daughter, voted Most Likely to Succeed (no pressure there at all...), often referred to as a goody-goody, and even grew up in a small town in Kentucky for goodness sake! So I get Annie to my core. I absolutely loved seeing her gain confidence and come to terms with who she really was and what she really desired. Is there a book #3 coming in this series?! Please tell me that there is! P.S.
