⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This is an older book but it won’t miss a beat! Plus, when two of the main characters are Golden Retrievers, how can you go wrong? From deankoontz.com: From a top secret government laboratory come two genetically altered life forms. . . One is a magnificent dog of astonishing intelligence. The other, a hybrid monster of a brutally violent nature. Both are on the loose… Bestselling author Dean Koontz presents his most terrifying, dramatic and moving novel: The explosive story of a man and a woman, caught in a relentless storm of mankind’s darkest creation… #bookstagram #whattheteacherreads #booklover #bookaddict #readingmakesyousmarter #suspense #thriller #goldenretriever #readersofinstagram

I love a good apocalyptic story! Here we have a family escaping the rat race of the big city for a week of relaxing solitude. The characters and reader first discover just how dependent we are on technology when internet and cell service fail. Stranger things begin to happen. And then strangers appear at their door. To trust or not to trust? And what is happening outside of their secluded bubble? The author keeps your mind running through the possibilities given the clues that he reveals. Small spoiler: The main reason some readers are frustrated with the story is that the author leaves you hanging at the end. But I think it’s perfect. The satisfaction is in the way the author makes you draw your own conclusion. You Shouldn’t Have Come Here has all the elements of a great suspense story. I liked the characters. They kept me guessing and looking for clues. I also enjoyed rural Wyoming for the setting. If you are looking for a ROM-COM with fun and relatable characters, this is one of my faves! Set in a tiny town in Alaska, newcomers have to navigate how to fit in with the locals who are very much opposed to growth and tourism. A cute local restaurant with a lumberjack owner and a bookish tourist set the stage. ❤️. Throwing back to the best of Oprah’s Book Club in the 90’s: 1. Drowning Ruth—A story of sisters in 1919 and the forces that both bind them together and tear them apart. Nursing soldiers of the Great War. A drowning. Secrets. One of my favorites that will leave you thinking about it for a long time. 2. Icy Sparks—1950s rural KY. An orphan with an undiagnosed affliction-violent tics and uncontrollable cursing. Icy must deal with being an outcast in a tight knit community. Unputdownable. 3. Ellen Foster—The first line of the book: “When I was little I would think of ways to kill my daddy.” Ellen is an unforgettable character who has everything against her but chooses not to drown in self pity. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ So, let me tell you about this book. It’s not for everyone. First, you probably need to have a decent curiosity about the USSR and second, an affinity for historical fiction. I have both, but I’m not gonna lie. I got bogged down around the 1/3 mark. But it got so much better and I loved the ending. It was perfect. Why is it a five star read for me? The writing is amazing! The author’s use of alliteration and personification had me hooked from the beginning. His prose is delightfully descriptive. Completing something a few times tends to instill a bit of confidence and belief. Before The Body Book, I had successfully published three children’s books. My confidence grew with each one. In addition to those completed books, I also have several drafts waiting for their turn in the spotlight. Trial and error had been replaced with a can-do attitude and some real-life knowledge. I never force myself to write, especially since writing is simply a fun hobby at this point. Book sales are not paying the bills. I do however try to keep an open mind to potential ideas for future stories. Usually, a new story develops over a series of weeks in which I jot notes, spend time daydreaming about the idea, and occasionally make a few halting and awkward attempts at writing a few lines. Mostly these early lines are ill-conceived and tossed in the bin, but getting the bad out helps to filter the good ideas through. “Getting the bad out helps to filter the good ideas through.” The Body Book did not follow this pattern at all. I was focused on promoting my third book, The Oddball, as well as attempting to develop a story around bicycles. As I walked down the hallway at school one day, I noticed a student completing a series of simple exercises in the hallway. We call this a sensory walk, and its basic premise is to help a student get the wiggles out and refocus for class. Lightning struck. I thought this might be a good rec for my 6th graders since they study Ancient Rome and Greece this year, and we read Greek mythology. It’s an older book (1956), so the language feels dated in parts, but the perspective of a group of kids running around Rome makes the historical details totally relatable. Estrella wishes she was more like her grandmother, brave and willing to stand up for others. People in her town are disappearing never to be heard from again. When the round ups starts again she can no longer stand by silently as Mexican people are targeted. She thinks her citizenship will shield her but what she doesn't know is that the local government will not take kindly to her bravery. I had no idea about Mexican repratitiaton in the 1930's. The Great Depression affected everyone but white America decided to blame Mexicans for the lack of work. In a government sanctioned movement, people of Mexican heritage whether they be citizens or residents were rounded up, dropped off in Mexico and never heard from again. It's an aspect of my history that I was oblivious to. History repeats itself but ignorance doesn't have to.

Name a chapter book you read over and over. I have many, but Island of the Blue Dolphins is probably top 3. Still love it. #bookpusher #kidliterature #whattheteacherreads #newberymedal #booksthatmakeyoucry

I picked this book up in the library while my daughter was choosing books. I almost started crying. We all have monsters we carry. Some days they are big and some days they are small. Some days they are small enough to carry. A great book to talk to kids about worries and anxiety. A great book for adults to remember to cry and reach out for help because the monster won't always be big. Now that I'm home, I'm going to go have that cry.

I love it when a book inspires me to get more information about a place, person, or moment in history. I had to research Syria after finishing this middle grade book today. #whattheteacherreads #bookstagram #summerreading2021 #summerbookstack #readingteacher #bookpusher #iteach678

Jordan longs to attend art school where he can pour himself into his passion, drawing. However, his parents have a different idea and send him to a private school known for academic excellence and a lack of diversity. Jordan is one of the few students of color in the entire school where he must put up with the ignorance of his classmates and teachers alike while trying to figure out where he fits in. This graphic novel tackles the issues of racism and biases in a relatable fun approach. If books serve as windows and doors, this is one that should be on every kids reading list.

I love when you read a book and figure out the reason for the title. Camino can't wait to see her dad. He visits once a year and his arrival is like a holiday for her and Tía. Yahaira isn't speaking to her dad when he leaves for his yearly business trip. When the plane he is on goes down, they are forced to face the secrets he left behind. Told in verse from both of the girls perspectives, it will have you hooked until the end. Novels in verse are hard for me because I have to force myself to slow down and read it as the author intended. I bet this would be a great novel in audiobook format.

My favourite time of the day is reading to my class! Sometimes they colour or draw, some like to just sit on a cushion, but they all just love to listen to a fabulous story! We just finished reading Fantastic Mr Fox, and we loved it - especially the Tightening Tension scenes! 🦊📚 #teachersofinstagram #teachersofinstagram #teacherlife #whattheteacherreads #inmyclassroom
