Blend in or stand out? What’s your take on that? I’d say it depends. It depends on the situation I find myself in, and as well on my state of mind. But there are as well moments when it’s important to read the room, feel the vibe around you to figure out if blending in might be more suitable than standing out, or vice versa. As an introvert I feel that standing out takes much more of my energy and takes me out of my comfort zone. But, sometimes it’s fun, at others it’s necessary. Let me tell you a story ⬇ I've been doing CrossFit now for over 7 years, and last year I moved to a gym without A/C... Now, I can handle the heat and bring a towel for the extra sweat, but the biggest adjustment has been to my hydration plan! I used to be able to get away with just water while working out and now I've had to really pay attention to my sodium intake and add some electrolytes to my water. My two favorite are Nuun and Skratch, but honestly, sometimes it's just adding sea salt to my water! Sodium is the most readily lost electrolyte in sweat, so that's the one to really pay attention to when choosing a hydration product. 🎓 “Your self worth is determined by you. You don’t have to depend on someone telling you who you are.” —Beyoncé 🎓 👩‍🎓Bachelors Degree in ASL and English Interpreting 2024 👩‍🎓 I have no words. In 2017, I made a bucket list of dreams I had for my life. Among some silly and some sentimental, I had written down that I wanted to be fluent in ASL. After a lot of research and self reflection, I felt that becoming an ASL interpreter would allow me to accomplish a dream while also allowing me to provide for myself and a future family. I then chose Utah Tech’s program as a help meet to guide me step by step to reach my goals and plans. Seven years later, I am here! It’s so surreal. I am proud of myself and all the hard work and hours I have put in to get my bachelors degree. I am more proud of how much I have grown in all aspects of my life through my college experience. Choosing to stay true to myself has kept me firmly founded in a life I enjoy living. I LOVE ASL. I LOVE traveling. I LOVE my friends and family. I LOVE my husband. AND I love me! With that said, I could not have done this without my family, friends and professors. So what should you do instead? ⬇️ Have a plan. That's all you need. Are there foods that are more in line with getting you to your goals? Sure! Are there foods that have more nutrients than others? Absolutely. Some foods are a "healthier choice" for YOU. That does not mean that all other foods are "bad" and should never be eaten. However, when you choose to enjoy foods that maybe aren't laser-focused towards your goals or are less nutrient rich than others, all you need is a plan. A plan for how those foods fit into your day, and your week of nutrition. Without a plan, those foods can overtake the foods that are more in line with your goals and will throw you into a place of not seeing the progress you want to see. Just keep eating.....Just. Keep. EATING! (I mean, it's just slightly more complex than that 🤣) 1. Total Calories: adequate overall calories while healing from an injury helps with tissue repair and re-building strength. Eating at a caloric deficit while injured leads to greater losses in strength and overall function, and can increase the time it takes you to return to your activities! 2. Protein: demands for amino acids (which are found in protein) are significantly elevated after an injury because amino acid uptake accelerates to support wound healing and tissue rebuilding. Increasing your protein intake helps to preserve muscle mass during your time off from normal training as well. Individual needs are VERY different, but I recommend no less than 0.7g/lb bodyweight. 3. Reduce Inflammation: This is not the time to door dash a Big Mac and fries! Yes, calories are important, but stay away from breaded/fried/greasy things and load up on foods that have a lot of vitamins, minerals and micronutrients like fruits, veggies, lean proteins, etc. 4. Supplements: Talk to a dietitian about possible supplements that may be helpful in reducing inflammation or speeding up recovery. Especially if you've broken a bone, required surgery or have other contributing medical history, supplements can help speed your recovery process along! Have specific questions? Let me know below! When I look at our meadow and forest restoration area- I could see all the invasive plants, relentless in their spread. Some days that’s all I can see and I feel overwhelmed and defeated. Alternatively- I could visit and protect all the native plants that are graciously naturally regenerating. I could choose to focus on all the native trees I’ve transplanted here. Native trees that are still alive, leafing out again, for another season. I could focus on all the nature that is fighting and winning a spot to grow. Protein is a priority! Let's talk about it...👇🏼 If you aren't getting enough protein from whole foods, a shake can be a great way to help get you there, or can be helpful if you don't *feel* hungry post workout. Why is protein so important? --increased muscle/strength overall, which increases our basal metabolic rate (what we burn just sitting and breathing), and muscle protects our bones! --it's the most thermogenic macronutrient (your body burns more calories breaking it down) --satiating macronutrient--helps you feel full! --helps ensure any weight we lose is NOT muscle, and muscle is what makes us look "toned" or "lean" --adequate protein is essential for recovery from workouts. Strength isn't gained in the workout. It's gained in the recovery! Full disclosure, I really love more like 30g of protein in a meal, but getting at least 20g is enough to get muscle protein synthesis started! 💪🏼 Have protein questions? Fortunate to have shared a very fulfilling week delivering ICS 300 & 400 with members of the Chemical Materials Activity (CMA), the Recovered Chemical Munitions Activity (RCMA), and the Aberdeen Proving Grounds (APG) EM and Fire Department. #ItDepends Congrats to the course graduates! It depends. #itdepends I get it. It really does. Nothing in #Physicaltherapy is clear cut or always one way or another. But, can we make a commitment that when this phrase falls out of our mouths (with patients or with students), that we at least give some content and context on what it DEPENDS ON. It takes more time. Whoever is receiving it might not be ready for ALL OF IT. But, just saying, "Well, it depends," feels so dismissive and disheartening. "Well, it depends..." This should just be a good start to what comes next and not a complete sentence. Share the wealth. Even if it's not time for all of it. Being able to glimpse what it depends on is helpful and improves the learning for patients and students. In my opinion if I can't explain what it depends on, I need to reflect on that. Why My Answer is Often "It Depends" 🤔 Hey there, SRG Fit family! Ever wonder why, when you ask me a fitness or nutrition question, my go-to response seems to be "It Depends"? Let's dive into that, shall we? 😄 In the beautifully complex world of fitness and nutrition (and honestly, life in general), black and white answers are as rare as a calm day on the internet. Why? Because every single one of us is a unique puzzle, made up of different pieces, backgrounds, and stories. Imagine giving the same workout and diet plan to a room full of people. You'd think the results would be similar, right? Wrong. You'd see a spectrum of outcomes because what works like a charm for one person might not even budge the needle for another. Make sure you like, save and share this one!! I'll be real with you, though....you're going to have to do some math! (make sure you read the WHOLE caption!) These are big ranges in that graphic, so let's talk about what this could look like practically: 150 lb athlete training 1 hour/day 5-6 days per week, you're looking at at least 2000 calories. 150 lb athlete training 15 hours per week (2.5 hours/day 6 days per week), you're looking at more like 3600 calories (or even more)! For both athletes, biggest portion of this is carbohydrates and the range of carbohydrates is variable on purpose so that it can swing up or down based on training volume and intensity. So how did we get there? Food gives us energy measured in the form of calories. Each macronutrient contains a different amount of calories per gram: 1 gram of protein = 4 calories 1 gram of fat = 9 calories 1 gram of carbohydrates = 4 calories Think about where you fall in each range, multiply by your body weight, and then multiply by the calories per gram above. For the first athlete, we used the lower end of the ranges. For the second athlete, the higher end. Happy calculating! And drop any questions below!
