I remember what it was like leaving my shift at the outpatient clinic at 7 PM. It was dark out. I’d often skip the gym. I’d go home, cook dinner in my crappy kitchen, watch a little TV with my 4 roommates (that’s what I could afford living in LA and working in outpatient), and go to bed… …just to wake up, rinse, and repeat. I wasn’t making a lot of money, I had zero control over my schedule, and I knew upward mobility was non existent. And that scared me. Enough so that when I started thinking of what the next phase of life was going to look like I knew I had to make a big change. I knew I wanted to have a wife and children and TIME to spend with them. I wanted to buy a house, go out to dinners, and go on vacation whenever I wanted. So I stopped seeing 20 patients a day in outpatient and started provided one on one treatments with home health patients. I was finally paid appropriately for my level of education and had the ability to create my own schedule. Home health truly changed my whole life trajectory and I’m eternally grateful for it. I started this Instagram account as a way to help other therapists that feel stuck in overworked, underpaid jobs. Hi 👋 I’m Zach I’m a PT that survived the high volume outpatient setting and was able to build a 7 figure home health therapy staffing company. Why did I say survived outpatient? Because I was being stretched thin seeing 20 patients a day with a per patient compensation of… …$16.53 😭 So in 2013 I left outpatient to try home health. Everyone said you make a ton of money, control your schedule, and provide 1 on 1 care… What more could I want? I was nervous because the DPT program at USC ✌️ hadn’t taught home health. We didn’t have any home health rotations. But I figured I’d sign up with a company and they’d teach me everything I needed to know… 🚫 WRONG. I signed up with a few companies and their orientations were all the same… …15 minutes showing me how to chart in their software followed by a kick out the door and telling me to immediately see patients. I felt lost. I made a ton of mistakes. I got yelled at for not following home health regulation by the same companies who wouldn’t take the time to train me on the rules. And as I talked to other therapists I learned this was the norm... Most therapists would have gone back to outpatient but I couldn’t bear seeing 20 patients a day at the same salary as a Panda Express Manager. So I had to figure it out. And after a year of being screamed at on a daily basis… I did it. I made over $100,000 my first 12 months. But I’ll be real, it was a brutal year.
