It had really good pacing. Donlea does a really nice job of weaving a story together and keeping me interested from start to finish. The pacing was spot on. The characters were so fun to root for and the villains were just so…villainy. I also enjoy how there are real life references to true crime in his books. In this particular book he talks about the Golden State Killer and the advances in DNA that led to his arrest and conviction. Another thing you can count on with this author is people getting what they deserve. That’s why the conclusions to his books are so satisfying. Just like his prior books, this one would make a great movie. This was my 3rd book by this author, and I can’t wait to read more in the future, his writing is consistently good. Def achieved auto-buy status for me. Thanks for @aim_publicity for sending a review disc and an early look at @secondsightfilmsofficial upcoming Blu-ray release of Ti West’s The Sacrament. In my unpopular opinion and the more I rewatch this film I believe this to be West’s best work, so brilliantly shot and a gem of the found footage genre. Gene Jones is unsettling to the max as the Jim Jonesesque character called Father. The tension this film brews is unrivalled, as with all of Wests work both prior and after its beautifully shot and well acted. I missed this film completely on release and was introduced to it by Rachel not long after we met and loved it on first watch it’s just grown on me to become a regular rewatch which has come to be my favourite Ti West movie in a stacked resume. One of the finest examples of found footage movies around, so creepy, well done and very unsettling. We always wanted to see this but it’s never had a UK release so we imported this from the US well go Blu-ray a few years ago. A very well put together release and has a lot more features than I thought it would and look forward to going through them. A definite purchase for us and is highly recommended for horror and found footage fans alike. (Okay then, 😂). 📜 The biggest thank you to authors for trusting reviewers with something so precious. Thank you, @braideeottobooks 🥺🥺. My biggest mistake when I started SotS, was presuming I knew what I was walking into. I was sure it was going to be an angst filled, fight-for-your-life kind of read. Maybe it’ll be like Hunger Games or Fourth Wing? Who knows? Spoiler, but not a spoiler: I was wrong. I would define SotS as a heavily character driven story. Aella was such an interesting character to read. She was the perfect blend of a naïveté that holds, strangely, the wisdom of an older soul. My only advice to you while entering this book: Trust everyone. Trust no one. Five stars! It’s like the author promises us the possibility of us having wings and pushes us right off the cliff and we’re falling and suddenly time freezes. So do we fly or do we fall? I CAN’T WAIT TO FIND OUT. 🫶🏼🍹 Funny Story 🍹🫶🏼 Happy release day to Funny Story, @emilyhenrywrites and the biggest thank you to @vikingbooksuk @penguinrandomhouse for my early release copy. This is EASILY my favourite Emily Henry (sorry to Book Lovers but it’s time to pass on the crown) I genuinely laughed out loud from start to finish! Daphne is hilarious and I loved her so much, but I loved Miles even more! Reverse sunshine grumpy is not usually my thing but Miles was perfect. I mean, he wasn’t perfect, he was so normal, and flawed, and that made him SO perfect 🫶🏼 “It’s okay. Just put on a shirt and meet me in the living room. Or skip the shirt. I told everyone tonight’s casual.” The banter between these two was just 🤌🏼 and I fell in love with them, and the nutty side characters, very quickly! Klaus Kinski, Florinda Bolkan and Nicoletta Elmi star and this movie just sounds everything you could ask for, I remember the Severin release just never got round to picking it up and now we don’t have to with Shameless releasing this Definitive 4K restored version with 3 separate cuts of the film and special features. Huge thanks to @aim_publicity for sending across review discs for @severinfilms new UK 4K UHD of section 2 Video Nasty Butcher Baker, Nightmare Maker. Although not the best of the nasties, this is still a good movie in its own right and has no business being as good as it is. Although the code red Blu-ray wasn’t a bad transfer this gives the movie a nice uptick and is the best it’s looked. This is definitely a must purchase for the horror & nasties fans alike and is great to see what @severinfilms have in store next for UK fans. I can also confirm on reviewing both the 4K and bluray this is identical to the US release so we are getting all the same special features. Directed by the late William Asher this movie stands out like a dirty nasty sore thumb in his filmography as he was a mainstream TV director known for classics such as Bewitched and Dukes of Hazzard. Susan Tyrell shines as the dominating aunt in this picture and was an early on screen part for the late Bill Paxton in one of his first roles. Short Synopsis - An orphaned teenager finds himself being dominated by his aunt who’s hell-bent on keeping him with her...at all costs. This is definitely worth a consideration for all horror fans not only for its standing in the historic video nasty era but as support for @severinfilms return to the UK market and so may it continue. In September 2013, when Puran Singh and I wrote this article, https://lnkd.in/guM-UArV on the then outgoing RBI Governor, Duvvuri Subbarao, little did I know that a decade later, I would have the opportunity to read an early copy of his autobiography. In our article, we had written, “Listed among ‘India’s 50 Most Powerful People 2009’ by Bloomberg Businessweek, Subbarao stood against the wide calls to cut interest rates by the industry and the government. He stuck to his belief that inflation hurts the common man and hence curbing it was more important even if it meant sacrificing part of the growth. Subbarao made efforts to make RBI a body that was ‘communicative, honest, open minded and accountable’ rather than a black box which was a mystery for people. He had the opinion that people should know what RBI does. He aimed to demystify RBI and make it a role model for central banks globally.” We concluded, “A Green Horn five years back, he retired locking horns with the bosses. On September 4th, 2013, as he handed over charge to Raghuram Govind Rajan as the 23rd Governor of the RBI, he may not have been the favorite of the finance minister of India, Mr. Palaniappan Chidambaram, but had certainly raised RBI’s stature as an autonomous body. He charted an independent path from the government, refused to succumb to the pressure from the Center.” Much of what we wrote, I can now understand from his perspective, as I read his lifestory and motivations. We love this film and never thought we’d see the day that this film would get such a lovely release. New artwork by @christophershystudioronin is 🔥, captures the air of the movie so perfectly. If you haven’t seen this film you need to change that, this is one of the British horrors of recent times and an excellent use of the found footage genre. There’s so much I could say about this film but don’t want to spoil it for anyone who hasn’t seen it as you need to go into this knowing as little as you can. One thing I will say is this is not for the claustrophobic fans of horror as this film oozes it and is the best use of claustrophobia since the classic likes of The Descent and As Above So Below. Give us more of these more obscure titles we would never see an amazing treatment like this! FIVE STAR ALERT - THE RETURN OF ELLIE BLACK Put this one on your radar! And be prepared to be on the edge of your seat for the entirety of this wild ride! The plot immediately drew me in and I was unable to put this book down. Which speaks volumes all in itself considering I had a terrible cold while reading. 🍇 THE EX VOWS 🍇 I could NOT hold out any longer on sharing my pure and unfiltered love for this book!! I need everyone to mark their calendar for July 16 and make sure you’re taking the day off/cancelling plans/getting a babysitter cause you’re gonna want to binge this gem ALL day. I already knew I was going to love this book, because I love anything @jessicajoycewrites writes (which at the time was literally one other book), but I truly didn’t know just how much I was going to love it. Second chance is such a special trope and the fact that this also had best friends to lovers made it even more special! And you know when you read a book and realize the characters are absolutely meant to be together?! Yeah, that’s Georgia and Eli 🥹. This book is the epitome of “you have to love yourself before you can let someone else love you.” The author tackled difficult subjects like anxiety, depression, and fear of abandonment with such care that if you relate to any of those struggles you will feel seen and taken care of. I was desperate for Eli’s internal thoughts and secretly wanted some chapters in his POV, but Joyce is SO good at expressing emotions both in words unsaid and facial expressions that I truly didn’t feel like I was missing out on anything. I laughed throughout all of it, and I full on cried for the last 15% of the book and then had to cuddle my husband before bed because I had too many emotions and feelings and needed someone to hold me 😩😭. My husband says that’s how he knows I loved a book cause I get all cuddly with him 😂. So there’s even more proof that I am in love with this story. One Perfect Couple Ruth Ware As promised I’m back with my review. Let me again thank @likely_suspects @ruthwarewriter and @simonschusteruk for the #vipreadalong and my #gifted book. And even more so since I found out I was a traitor 😱😱😱 But I’m a Taurus and loyal. 😂 Ruth Ware can be hit or miss for me, but this one is definitely a hit and is my new favorite of her books. They are always slow burns and that means I need to connect with something. This time it was Lyla, the POV character. She’s a scientist, or a doctor, if you believe the PR docs. She’s relatable and likable as the “F”able girl next door. While Amazing Race is my favorite reality show, I have seen a few of the others, so the premise was intriguing. Five couples. A remote island. Multiple competitions. One winner. When a storm hits, things go awry and the premise gets more interesting. The plot starts before everyone leaves for the island, but there are radio calls and diary entries from further in the story, interspersed, to give hints as to what is to come. I liked that they didn’t always make sense and I was always trying to figure them out. It gave me a little bit of feels for And Then There Were None, one of my all time favorite books, and of course Survivor and Love Island. And a little bit of Lord of the Flies. It was such an easy read and I flew through the pages. I needed to know what happened. I had so many thoughts on where this one was headed, from the obvious to the wacky, and I was wrong on all accounts. This is definitely a book everyone will be talking about this summer. The perfect beach read unless you are going to a remote island. And for all those commenting, this gorgeous cover is the UK version which is out July 18, 2024. Would you go on a reality tv show? 🌿 Book Review 🌿 Thank you so much to @simonbooks for a physical copy of Swift River, by Essie Chambers ➡️ Pub Date: June 4, 2024 Quick Blurb: This is a story that encapsulates grief & hope simultaneously. We follow 16 year old, biracial, Diamond. Her mom is white, and her dad (who is missing) is black. Diamond embarks on a journey of self discovery and a change in path, after connecting with a distant aunt, learning about her black history and the evolution of her lineage. We are weaved 3 timelines: diamond’s current day, diamond’s experiences 7 years earlier (leading up her father’s disappearance), & the 1910’s through letters from Diamond’s great Aunt Clara. My thoughts: This book is definitely a slower pace throughout, but Essie Chambers writes with a beautiful voice and a prose that will keep you turning the pages. The ending gave me a small, panging array bittersweet emotions for Diamond and her mother. It was a story that left me feeling slightly discontented, but not disheartened. I loved the concept of Diamond finding a new path and hopeful future for herself due to connecting to the family history she hadn’t known about. I felt sad by how things were left between Diamond and her mother, though it felt like a realistic inevitability given their communicative dysfunctions and fundamental differences, & I still feel some mild confusion regarding Diamond’s father and his story… which is possibly Intentional, but I’m actually not sure. This story didn’t quite go in the direction I expected it to, and I have small leftover feeling of anticlimax. Yet it still left me emotional at the end, and it gave me so much to think about regarding how our family history may affect our current selves. Thank you to Abby Jimenez, the Reader Group on Facebook, and Forever Publishing for the opportunity to read an early copy of Just for the Summer! I have been a long time Jimenez fan, but what really sealed the deal for me was A Part of Your World. Such a beautiful book that tugged at my heart and remains one of my favorite books to this day. I was thrilled to read this early. The book starts out so funny - a Reddit thread from a guy claiming that every girl he’s broken up with has found their soulmate as soon as they break up. He meets Emma on the thread who claims the same thing happens to her. They easily form a bond and make a plan. Four dates, one Kiss and a breakup. According to their dating history, they should find their soulmate, after? Right? Not that easy! Justin is dealing with some really deep family issues that will shape the course of his life, and Emma is a travel nurse with only six weeks in Minnesota. Not to mention, her crazy mother shows up out of the blue and starts to date their landlord! This was such a rollercoaster. It was so sweet, genuine, and really took its time to explain the story. I loved all the characters, and thought it was done so well! I was fully expecting a rom com, but it was much deeper than that. Highlighting family trauma, taking on big responsibilities at a young age, learning empathy over anger and so much more. I can’t wait to reread it when it comes out in April! The audio narration was fantastic. I had so much fun listening to this one. I feel like the MC, Brooke was so trusting of everybody (ok yall she was dumb, like real dumb 😂🤣😂) that I wanted to scream at her through the book and shake her, but I also really loved her character at the same time. I highly recommend checking it out, although I’m exhausted after reading it. I had no idea who to fully trust, I mean I knew who I liked but you can’t ever trust that with a thriller. It was just a whirlwind of misplaced trust and ulterior motives. I did guess the ending but I didn’t guess how we would get from point A to point B so it was really fun to put the pieces of the puzzle together. The fact that it has such a high Goodreads, ranking, after being out for several years, is a very telling sign for me. So I was very happy to add my five star review to the mix. I can totally see this book putting people into a book hangover. I’m drained from reading it in the best possible way. This is probably one of my favorite Frieda books, and I would absolutely listen to it or read it again. Was this book over the top? Yes. I loved every minute of it. QOTD: Have you read this author? 💔 BYE, BABY 💔 I LOVE Carola Lovering. I will truly read anything she writes and I’m just obsessed with her books. Nothing will ever top Tell Me Lies for me but I have always enjoyed each book she’s written, and this is one you won’t want to miss when it releases March 5! Bye, Baby was another great read full of mystery, intrigue, pain and hope. There were two POVs and multiple timelines, so you really need to pay attention to what’s going on otherwise you’ll miss key moments happening in the present timeline. This one felt different than the romantic drama/suspense of her other novels. This story focuses on a friendship and what it’s like to grow apart from someone but also knowing you can’t stop being friends with them for… reasons 👀. Big thanks to @aim_publicity for sending us an early copy of upcoming @severinfilms UK 4K release of Nightmares in a Damaged Brain! Great release for a good Section 1 Video Nasty, we imported the US version on release so have both to show you the slight differences in both releases see later pics for more. This is by far the best this movie has ever looked, the 88films Blu-ray was a good uptick to previous dvd and vhs releases but this takes it that one step further with vibrant colours and picture has been cleaned up but kept that all important grain so you remember the sleazy video nasty your watching! Great to see @severinfilms return to the UK market! And with 4K releases we need! Hopefully we will see more of their US releases get US releases come to the UK if licensing permits, very exciting for UK Physical Media and horror fans alike. The main differences from UK to the US release is the the 3rd disc of rare David Hamilton-Grant productions is missing but I can only assume this down to licensing. The slipcovers are also slightly different, UK adjusted with the original UK video nasty title, the US slip has spot glossing and embossed titles and feels thicker and the UK sports 18 certificates and is a plain smooth slip. The reversible art inside is also altered to show the UK title. All in all a very good release and a must for UK horror fans and to show our support for Severin in the UK. If you are a massive fan of the film I’d personally look at importing the US version but for video nasty fans and horror fans wanting to discover this sleazy slice of horror to grab this great UK release.
