𝕾𝖍𝖎𝖙 𝖍𝖆𝖕𝖕𝖊𝖓𝖘. Urban Gothic - Brian Keene 2.5/5 SKULLS (I only had 4 small skulls) I wanted to like this book, I really did. On one level I did enjoy it as Keene is definitely a talented writer but on the other hand; I also feel insulted as the reader. 'Shit happens' This sentiment that gets repeatedly echoed through the book whether it be the direct phrase or diatribes of the same nature will definitely frustrate the reader by the end because no question you have will ever be answered, and 'shit happens' is the only cocktease of an answer you get. Keene basically refuses to give ANY reasons for the events in this story past the present situation. It's a disjointed venture of set piece after set piece with some instances of what other authors could have made horror into a juvenile creep fantasy; it feels in some ways more shock value than trying to create legitimate grotesque horror. The book is overloaded with SO many horror tropes of mid-'00s films that a reader can PREDICT the order of deaths by the characters mannerisms and attitudes - I did! Most if not almost all of the characters were written exactly like the horror film characters of this era - cardboard personalities you could name 'meatbag #1-6.' You really don't feel for anyone who dies in this work. I think it would have paced better as a film. It would have been less infuriating as a film due to the lack of any explanations for the story and the author TAUNTING the reader the duration of the book that any question they have will never be answered. This was the most infuriating aspect. Keene's writing style is good, juvenile at times, but he made this entertaining enough to want to read and finish even though you walk away with the same experience from a typical slasher film. Entertained but not any richer in senses. I'm not turned off of Keene's works by this but I couldn't recommend this work to anyone who wants a plot with any answers. It's essentially reading a more fleshed out horror script; it could have been something more if the only plot narrative and driver wasn't.... Krásnou sobotu přeji všem milovníkům i nemilovníkům knih a připravila jsem si pro vás recenzi na Ghúla. Chvíli mi tentokrát trvalo, než jsem knihu dočetla, ale nakonec se zadařilo! 😄👍 Brian nás seznámí s Timmym, Barrym a Doughem. Třemi mladými chlapci spřádajícími plány na právě probíhající letní prázdniny. Jejich hlavním hřištěm je hřbitov, kde tráví i většinu času ve své skryté podzemní pevnosti. Všechno by bylo ideální, kdyby se ovšem nezačali ztrácet lidé, propadat hroby a dít další neobvyklé věci. A jasně, že se tři kluci, až příliš zvědaví, rozhodnou přijít celé věci na kloub! Jenže se začíná ukazovat, že Ghúl není tou jedinou příšerou, které budou muset kluci čelit... Ze začátku mi příběh dost připomínal Kingovo TO. A nejsem si jistá, zdali to nebylo spíš na škodu. V mém případě asi ano, protože s IT jsem se seznámila teprve nedávno a dojmy z něj jsou ve mne ještě čerstvé a měla jsem na začátku problém se začíst. Jinak ale byl Ghúl super! Napínavý od začátku do konce a moc se mi líbily zmínky o bílé magii - pow wow. Také podrobné vylíčení životů hlavních hrdinů a toho, co se v nich děje, beru jako velké plus. Dostanete tak ucelený příběh. A knize to také dalo úplně jiný spád. Možná, že samotné osudy kluků byly mnohem horší než Ghúl samotný.... 👍 Kvůli oné zmíněné podobnosti prostě nemohu dát plný počet bodů, takže dělím na půlky. I had a terrible reading month in April. One of the worst I’ve had in several years. I finished a book earlier in the month and that was it. I really wanted to read but I couldn’t concentrate. Mental health is a real bitch. I picked up this book that I had ordered because I loved the “prequel” novel so much. I figured a short story collection would be lower pressure than diving into a honker narrative. This is just what I needed. It’s got scares, laughs, cries, and a few mind-benders. The dead got me to feelin’ a little more alive again. The Perfectly Fine Neighborhood is a perfectly fine curation of short stories in the universe of the novel The Perfectly Fine House by @skozeniewski & @texascthulhu. In this world, it’s odd if you don’t see the deceased, the ghosts, the dead “living” amongst the breathing. When you die, you may be lucky to continue to exist with your loved ones or... not. Amongst the writers of the novels, you have a real showcase contributing stories including Brian Keene (what a heart-tugger) & Jeff Strand, and some favorites from first time published stories, notably by Shane Burnham. Here’s the thing, you don’t need to read its predecessor to really get a kick out of these stories (but you should because it’s wildly, weirdly, fun). Rezension/Werbung 📚📚📚 #festafriday @festaverlag @artigrey 💜❤💜 Inhalt einmal swipen ➡️➡️ Einschätzung: Interessiert und gebannt flog ich über die Einführung und die ersten Kapitel und war mitten im Geschehen in Brinkley Springs dabei. Ich fühlte mich als ein Teil der Stadt, konnte die Angst der Einwohner spüren, ebenso die Kraft und Macht, die von den dunklen Wesen ausging. Dramatisch schildert Keene das Bangen der Bewohner um ihr Leben. Bei jedem der erwähnt wurde wünschte ich mir sie könnten entkommen. Bei den grausamen Morden, die wirklich sehr makaber und bösartig sind, schwand die Hoffnung recht schnell dahin. Der Hauptprotagonist Levi, der als Einziger dem Bösen die Stirn bieten kann, ist so der klassische Held. Selbst kämpft er mit einem harten Schicksal, lässt kaum Leute an sich ran. Ein Einzelkämpfer, der stark scheint, aber die Unsicherheit nicht immer verbergen kann und vielleicht ein bisschen mehr Glück als Verstand hat. Keenes Schreibstil ist sehr flüssig und dynamisch. Es geht kontinuierlich voran, mit kleinen Schritten tastet sich der Leser vorwärts und man wird nicht auf den letzten Seiten mit Ereignissen erschlagen. Das Mystische wurde für mich in der richtigen Menge verpackt, zu viel davon hätte mich das Buch sicherlich zur Seite legen lassen. Doch so konnte ich das Buch einfach nicht aus der Hand legen und nutzte jede freie Minute um Levi und den anderen die Daumen zu drücken. Fazit: Brian Keene hat eine Art zu schreiben, die mich sehr fasziniert hat. Spannung, Horror und ein bisschen Fantasy haben mich sehr begeistern können. Gerade mit dem Mystischen gibt er diesem Werk eine spezielle Note. Měli v plánu dělat vylomeniny, číst komiksy v jejich podzemním doupěti a doufali v nějaké dobrodružství. Toto přání se jim brzy plní, ale ne úplně přesně tak, jak zamýšleli. Na místním hřbitově procitá Ghúl a boj o holý život už nebudou chlapci svádět jen v Dungeon & Dragons, ale ve skutečnosti. Není to však jediná příšera, která se jim staví do cesty. Chlapci zjišťují, že příšery jsou na každém rohu... Ať už ty lidské či nelidské.. Tohle se povedlo. Mé nadšení z knihy nemůže být větší. Dějová linka samotného Ghúla není špatná. Nicméně, pokud by v knize šlo jen o tohle, byla by to průměrná kniha. Hlavní drama se však odehrává za zavřenými dveřmi disfunkčních rodin. Příběhy jednotlivých chlapců jsou silné a politování hodné. Nejsilnější okamžik celé knihy nastává, když se jeden kamarád svěřuje se svými traumaty druhému. Děj knihy je zasazen do roku 1984 a autor nám představuje tehdejší popkulturní záležitosti, ať už v podobě hudby či komiksů. Rozhovory chlapců jsou skvěle napsané a pro silnější slovo se nejde daleko. Díky tomu všemu se dokážeme krásně adaptovat a knihu si užít. A to jedním dechem... Knihu jednoznačně doporučuji. Vím, že nejsme ani v půlce roku, ale Ghúl u mě již teď bude jeden z kandidátů na překvapení roku. Četli jste Ghúla? He quickly became one of my favorite writers! I was hooked. I met him once back in 2012 at Horrorfind in Gettysburg, where he was kind enough to sign several of my paperbacks. Today I ventured out to Columbia PA, where Mr Keene owns a nice little bookstore/comic shop called Vortex Books & Comics (@vortex_books_n_comics ). I picked up some books I didn’t own yet and he was once again kind enough to sign several more of my older paperbacks I brought along with me. Dark Hollow - Brian Keene. This is my pick for @shawna_reads #12monthsofhorror prompt for April, which was #folkhorror - as recommended by @hail_horror_hail 🖤 Something odd is happening in LeHorn's Hollow. Women are disappearing, and strange pipe music is heard in the woods. Local author Adam, his trusty dog Big Steve, and his small group of loyal neighbours are pitted against an evil half man/half goat like creature (a Satyr). If you aren't interested yet, there's no hope for you, honestly 🤣 On the surface, it may seem like a ridiculous premise for a horror novel, but you just have to trust Keene with the content, and he delivers 100%. The Satyr makes for a truly unique and creepy antagonist. Adam's neighbours make up the misfit band of likeable characters you really want to root for. While this probably ranks on the lower tiers of my Keene ratings so far, this was still a completely manic and enjoyable read - full of magic, menance, and mythology. As I read this series in the wrong order (I read Ghost Walk first), reading this was really enlightening in terms of understanding the background behind LeHorn's Hollow itself. Keene establishes a great bit of lore around the area, and I can't wait to explore it more! ⚠️ I don't usually give trigger warnings for anything other than animal abuse, but this book does deal with miscarriage in some detail, and I feel like it could be a rough read for some. The Conqueror Worms - Brian Keene. Another book ticked off my #24in24 🪱 I knew going in that this was going to be a creature feature about giant killer worms...and it is. But it's also so much more than that. Enter cults, mythological sea creatures, and Satanists on surf boards. No, really. All set against an apocalyptic flooded landscape. If it sounds like fun, that's because it is. I will warn that there is a jarring POV shift halfway through, but once I'd got my head round it, I embraced it. It sort of becomes a story within a story, and it works pretty well in terms of giving more backstory to the survivors. It explores what the rest of the world is up against outside of the main protagonist's experience. The rising, primo romanzo di Brian Keene pubblicato nel 2003, racconta di una pandemia zombie in modo non convenzionale. Come la maggior parte dei racconti sugli zombie, The rising mantiene l’idea di una pandemia mondiale in cui i morti risorgono. Coloro che non sono infetti sono costretti a sopravvivere con ciò che trovano, con quello che riescono a procurarsi nei negozi di alimentari o con la caccia nei boschi circostanti. L'unico modo per abbattere definitivamente uno zombi è sparargli alla testa. Quindi fin qui niente di nuovo o di non già visto. La svolta sta nel fatto che questi zombi non sono automi senza cervello. Infatti i corpi dei morti sono abitati da demoni venuti da un’altra dimensione. I corpi posseduti, nonostante siano morti, possono parlare, usare strumenti, piazzare trappole, ecc...e qui non vi spiego come e perché altrimenti vi farei spoiler. Inoltre, l'infezione non si ferma solo all'uomo, ma si è diffusa alla fauna selvatica circostante. Ci sono ratti zombi, uccelli e persino cervi zombi. L'unico vantaggio che l'uomo ha contro la piaga dei non morti è che, a causa della putrefazione, queste creature si muovono più lentamente di quanto avrebbero fatto in vita. Ed è proprio qui che Keene a mio avviso è riuscito con successo a capovolgere tutta la tradizione degli zombi, dando a queste mostruosità uno scopo e un processo di pensiero, conferendo a tutto ciò un fascino ancor più spaventoso. Dimenticate le tradizionali creature zoppicanti il cui unico scopo è nutrirsi di carne o cervelli, gli zombie di Keene sono esseri minacciosamente intelligenti.
