I’m reading a book , a memoir between two best friends who both have 17 year old sons dealing with illness- one mental illness and the other cancer. They share their parallel stories and texts they’ve sent each other. Besides the tears I’ve shed “with” these mothers, I’ve been gaining a keen insight of grief and the disproportion amount of care in health care for those with mental illness vs physical illnesses. These two women are inspiring as they share their experiences and knowledge they’ve gained through their darkest hours as mothers. Their friendship is also inspiring. Tonight Pat’s words just really hit home for me. “One small goal, one breath at a time, we begin to find hope as we unsteadily follow a breadcrumb trail of kindness towards a new way of being.” After tragedy we don’t go back to normal. And I love her description of it being a new way of being! I feel like I’ve tried to go back to normal after losing my mom. And there is really no going back only forward. And my life will forever be based on before and after. This book isn’t like any I’ve ever read. I’m grateful for their insights and abilities to share their stories. Nate, he was some character - a lot of background and one of the main focuses of the book. I was surprised at Nate, at first, the audacity he had but when the pieces start fitting, it made sense and I was totally here for it! My heart has been particularly heavy for college students. I found this picture of myself at 19 years old and despite the smile for the photo, I had lost sight of hope, and was in serious depression. It was about a year after the accident and traumatic brain injury. I couldn't read, drive or focus. I lost huge parts of my memory. The doctors said I would never recover. Never recovering meant I could be throwing up every day for the rest of my life. I wasn't able to be in school, I couldn't play tennis, I couldn't even hang out with friends most nights because of the strong symptoms. I lost my independence and everything I had ever liked about myself. I told God that if I was going to remain alive on earth, He needed to prove to me He was worth it. There were many, many, many hard and lonely days ahead. It was not an overnight turnaround, but trust turned into a deep, real hope. A college student recently asked me about holding onto hope because her's was running out... I told her it's about the small moments that can seem really insignificant. In those small moments of surrender and trust, God shows up. He brings His peace. Then those small, tiny moments that no one sees build into months and years of trust where hope is no longer theoretical. It doesn't seem like it was that long ago... but all of a sudden I'm not that 19yr girl old without hope... I'm 27, living in Boston, sharing with students about how I got through... and I am so glad that I did. Wherever you're at in the journey, never, never, never give up. This is a question I often receive (in different forms) and I thought I’d answer it on here 🤗 The short answer is no I don’t get nervous because if God healed me and restored me once, I know that He can again. I am fearless when I am rooted in the truths of the Bible. I believe God is my protector, my healer, and my hope. His plans are to prosper me and not to harm me. I also know that just bc God loves me tremendously, doesn’t mean I can’t get hurt again… In spite of that, God calls us not to worry, and I really try not to. As He is providing for me in this very moment, He will provide for me in each future moment. The much longer answer… is about how I mentally know what I just said above, but my body gets really nervous about my safety. It is HARD not to be nervous when we have history of trusting God and we still got really really hurt…. I can find myself shaking and hysterically crying out of nowhere if my body is triggered by a threat. It takes me a few min to try to understand why my body is upset. It’s not cognizant. Only after it happens can I understand why my body took that route of panic. It’s amazing how something you don’t think about can come out of nowhere and can hijack your whole day. The issues come from all of the years of pain - the throwing up, the falling down, the doctors, the testing, and so much more. My body really went through a lot and it doesn’t want to go through something like that again. It remembers the pain even if I try to forget it. So if I had any advice it’s this: 🌊Trust God above all else. This includes trusting God more than your health/abilities/pain/trauma. 🌊Reject fear and worry every single time it comes into your head. No exceptions. 🌊Be patient with yourself when it’s something you cannot control (like a PTSD response). Work WITH your body, not against it. Maybe give yourself a hug or take a nap. 🌊 Never, Never, NEVER give up💙

"Magnificent Mansions" - a book about hope for those who feel they have wasted their lives. I recount slogging meaninglessly about for decades without any sense of specific purpose. Night after night, I lay awake with insomnia praying and listening for even the slightest hint of direction. But I experienced only long periods of silence. Then one night, a glint of hope finally broke through the darkness. I realized that God had come through for me after all. I assumed many others have also been disparaged and believe they too have wasted their lives. There are certainly those who feel theirs have been ruined. Thus, "Magnificent Mansions" is a book about hope, a true story with a message I was moved to share. The story also works its way into a discussion. The discourse challenges dogmas that (if adhered to) I believe unnecessarily lead to frustration and disappointment within many Christians. I also felt driven to share where and how elements of the message were derived. Some came by way of a dreary wasteland of concrete. The grand theaters of creation gave me peeks at others. And the most critical components seemed to occur to me in the dead of night. But the theme of all of it came from hearing God's transformative words as found in the Scripture and by catching glimpses of Him expressed through others, in subtle exchanges, and in unexpected ways. I wrote down many of my thoughts and experiences at or near the moments they happened. So at times, the reader may have a real-time sense of the progression and a bit of mystery. I believe many of the situations I was going through are widely relatable. Oddly, these happenings all seem to play out as a peculiar parable. The book is loaded with allegory. And so are our lives. But the message intends for one to look at God, His work in and through us. It is about the magnificent place He prepares for us. There, we have our lives fulfilled as we glorify Christ. It is centred around the events that made the world stand still in 2020. It is a book to treasure, simply told in very few words and with black and white line drawn illustrations but there's depth there that rewards re-reading, while I have it sitting beside me as I wrote this I kept re-opening it and pressing it on people to read. I ❤ how the events of last year were never explicitly mentioned, even though as a reader you knew exactly what was being referenced. This metaphorical approach allowed for the reader to put their own take on the narrative - to feel like the book embodied their own experience. Yes, it’s a bit of a tearjerker but it is ultimately a story about hope. 🙏 It offers no judgment, no certainty but it does make you feel that together we can move from here to a better place and that we should take the good we have learned from these years and keep them with us. 💞 I truly feel richer in character for having experienced it, because to read this story is to truly experience it rather than just gloss over words on a page. It’s been said and will be said many times in the future, but 2020 flipped our lives on edge and gave many people pause to think about what’s important and what we take for granted. Here’s a splendid reminder that we are resilient, that we need to make time for connection, and that we should focus more on what truly matters. 💖 I think this serves for the pandemic, but also for anything else that knocks us down in life.
