What is it about Barbaresco that keeps you wanting more, and knows how to seduce you to its fruits? Take this 2014 Prunotto Barbaresco, for example. An absolute treasure. Same grapes used to produce Barolo - Nebbiolo, just different nearby area in the same region with slightly different time table method between vinification and aging in the cellar. So, it’s Nebbiolo - period. The King’s favored. And certainly, my favored. The history of growing and producing this grape in Piemonte is interesting. When you taste it, it tells you exactly where it’s from, tells you about itself and offers your palate so much pleasure. Aromas of red berries and leather, with hints of coffee grinds and spice. The delivery to the palate is powerful, but not obtrusive. At just 10 years old, it was very approachable (didn’t need to decant), and felt young with such vigor, and yet elegant. Beautifully-balanced; acidic nature along with the density of alcohol in check, offering silky fine tannins the mid-palate enjoyed. Very nicely rounded with very pleasant mouthfeel. I could keep going, but I digress. It’s just a beautiful wine. I felt the wine could have gone at least another couple decades, if not more. Fit in nicely with the thickest NY Strips I think I’ve ever grilled. ⭐️Vesevo Aglianico Beneventano IGP 2023⭐️ We picked up this bottle from a lovely independent wine merchant @vinneufwines during a trip to Stratford-upon-Avon. Vesevo is situated in the Irpinian hills of Campania, known as the 'Switzerland of the South' due to its outstanding natural beauty, beautiful villages, and landscapes immersed in the mountains. The name Vesevo comes from the ancient name for the famed Volcano Vesuvio (Vesuvius) in whose shadows the vineyards can be found. The vineyards are situated at between 450 and 550 metres above sea level and benefit from the cool breeze blowing off the Bay of Naples. Over the centuries, this same breeze has blown volcanic ash from Vesuvius inland to give the soil a poor, volcanic character. Rich in minerals, these soils can create unique wines with elegance, complexity, and longevity. 🍇Made from 100% Aglianico grapes from the warmer area of Benevento, which boasts volcanic and clay soils. The grapes are hand-harvested, de-stalked, and gently pressed. Maturation mostly takes place in temperature controlled stainless steel to preserve fresh primary flavours with a small amount proportion aged in American oak barriques🍇 Deep red with violet reflections, the aromas are intense and complex, presenting a bouquet of black fruit with a little spice and prominent notes of coffee and vanilla. On the palate, firm but smooth tannins, layers of ripe black fruits, a touch of cassis with a hint of smoky character. Oak ageing brings subtle vanilla notes and a well-rounded structure. Another day at the office started with: 2022 Bodega Hermanos Mess Marmajuelo This was a first for me. I had never tried Marmajuelo previously. This producer sources this grape from the Canary Islands in Spain. It was a bright, crisp, delectable wine that paired so well with the Burrata cheese appetizer. DOC Friuli 🍷 An elegant mix of flowers and fruit, with a good array of varietal aromas such as pears, banana, apricot and Acacia flowers. 🍷 The taste is reminiscent of pear syrup and quince peel. 🍷 Pairs well with white meat, seafood and such cheeses as Brie, Gruyere, Mozzarella and Parmigiano Reggiano. 🍷 Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks. Colli Orientali del Friuli Friulano Le Vigne di Zamò “No Name” DOC 2021 It’s interesting how the producers have called their wine “No Name”. 👀 The story behind this is from a decade ago: When Bourgogno [producer in Barolo] submitted two samples that were the exact same from two different casks; One achieved the DOCG of Barolo and the other did not. As Bourgogno wanted to share the sample that didn’t meet the criteria, it was denied a name, so they decided to call it “No Name”. However, the Le Vigne do Zamo is based the opposite side of Italy (bordering Slovenia). Grapes are harvested and de stemmed, and aged in steel tanks to preserve those fruity aromas. Due to the high acidity of the wine some Lee stirring is involved to relax the wine a bit.
