Tell me Everything by Elizabeth Strout I could literally read Elizabeth Strout all day. Her books are so wonderful they epitomise what reading pleasure means to me. The only problem is that you end up reading one of her books too quickly. Every book of hers is so rich and vibrant with characters and place you just become completely lost in the world Elizabeth Strout creates. And with each new book that world widens and expands whilst simultaneously bringing more and more of her books and characters together.. I started reading Elizabeth Strout with Olive Kitteridge and have devoured every Lucy Barton book. Lucy Barton’s books started as standalone stories but she has slowly been drawn into the same world of Olive Kitteridge and the small town of Crosby in Maine. Bob Burgess, who has been a part of both Olive and Lucy’s stories over the years is now the central character after being the one of the central figures in The Burgess Boys (which for some reason I haven’t read yet!). Bob’s story picks up where Lucy’s last story dropped us off. But the other amazing thing about Elizabeth Strout’s novels is you can jump into the world at any time, at any place which makes her books perfect for old and new fans. There is a great plot to this novel but I’m not going to write a synopsis because the heart of this novel is Bob Burgess; his friendship with Lucy Barton, his relationship with his family and his part in the community. Most of which Bob is completely unaware of. This is a novel about Life, Love and friendship and all the things that go on inbetween; both beautiful and tragic. There are so many scenes in this book that are just absolutely storytelling perfection. I desperately need to fill in the gaps of my Elizabeth Strout reading because I need to read every word she has written.If you haven’t read Elizabeth Strout I implore you to pick up any one of her books and I almost guarantee you will be in love with her writing too. She is just amazing. 📚I’ve doubled down on Elizabeth Strout, and just inhaled the second in her Lucy Barton series, ‘Anything is Possible’ (2017). Strout has a remarkable talent for capturing the small private moments and thoughts of her small town characters in a way that makes you feel you shouldn’t be witnessing them - moments of anguish, humiliation, suffering, naivety, voyeurism. The discomfort felt by being privy to these moments is, like driving past a fresh car crash, riveting. In this novel, Strout avoids an overarching plot, instead dedicating each chapter to a different character, filling in the gaps about the lives of the people that were mentioned during the hometown gossip shared between Lucy and her mother in the first novel in the series, ’My Name is Lucy Barton’. While seemingly disconnected, each vignette has some thread that ties it to another, reflecting the inevitable interconnectedness between people in a small country town. I found myself feeling the suspense in anticipating which character would grace the next chapter - but more so, what dirty little secret would be unveiled. And the secrets kept mercilessly coming: A father’s secret gay life; a couple who spied on their guests; a daughter who walked in on her mother being spanked by the Spanish teacher; a husband who steals from his wife to pay off his prostitute. In fact, the only thing you can be sure of is that each vignette would reveal some kind of pain, fault, sadness or problem. It sounds grim. And it is. But it’s also told in superb prose. It’s a marvel that such unsentimentally economical use of words can convey so much depth, often injecting shards of light into the dark. Zmiany w życiu zawodowym i… Bronek na pokładzie ;) troszkę zweryfikowały mój czas przeznaczony na czytanie. I nie znaczy to, że czytam mniej, ale mam mniej czasu na dzielenie się swoimi opiniami po lekturze. Dlatego dziś krótko (na kolejnych kafelkach) o trzech książkach przeczytanych lub wysłuchanych w ostatnich tygodniach. Lucy i morze, Elizabeth Strout Uwielbiam styl #elizabethstrout! Pomimo tego, że historia osadzona jest w bardzo konkretnej przestrzeni czasowej (pandemia COVID), Strout udało się stworzyć ponadczasową opowieść o nas samych – relacjach rodzinnych, małżeństwie, trudnym rodzicielstwie, miłości, przyjaźni, wyborach, których każdy z nas musi dokonywać i związanych z nimi konsekwencjami. Śnieg jeszcze czysty – Anna Musiałowicz Bardzo smutna w tematyce, ale napisana pięknym językiem powieść. Wrażliwie o ludzkiej niewrażliwości. Przejmujący los wiejskiej rodziny w latach 60-ych. O ludziach, którzy absolutnie nie potrafili radzić sobie z emocjami. Żadnymi – ani tymi dobrymi, a tym bardziej trudnymi. Ostatnie stadium – Nina Lykke Słodko-gorzka. Wewnętrzne przemyślenia Elin, która w codziennej praktyce lekarki rodzinnej, boryka się z roszczeniowymi pacjentami, a jednocześnie sama usiłuje poukładać osobiste sprawy małżeńskie. Another one I finished a few weeks ago... bought this from the wonderful Gould's books in Newtown before an appointment when I'd forgotten to pack a book... WELL, what a writer Elizabeth Strout is. In case you've not read her... I just find her books warm and wise and Oh William! was so comforting. This book made me feel held, somehow (weird, I know. I feel cringe even writing that). BUT LET ME TELL YOU she is also a narrative genius, generating narrative desire through delay and digression. We open with 'I would like to say a few things about my first husband, William'. Then, on page 36, after having explicitly set us up with some visuals and vignettes, our narrator says "And in rather quick succession, two events happened to William. But let me mention just a few more things first." And so Lucy Barton, our narrator, keeps talking to us. The narrative voice is disarming, conversational, sometimes a little too familiar so that I thought "okay, Lucy! I know you're just telling me what you think things mean" - and that's part of her genius, too. You forget you're reading fiction, that it's not Lucy Barton just telling you her thoughts... and yet it is. No chapters. Lots of digressions and memories. Peopled with memorable characters (Mrs Nash pp 28-30). She’s only gone and done it again; Strout never fails to make the everyday extraordinary. And oh, it felt so good to be back in the Strout universe 😭! Tell Me Everything is not published for months yet, but I simply could not leave it on my @netgalley shelf. While the much anticipated back and forth between Olive and Lucy is an integral part of the book, this is first and foremost a Bob Burgess novel. And I think I’m kind of a little bit in love with Bob Burgess now? What a man 😍 As always, the ‘drama’ is quiet, unassuming - almost gentle, in that way that ordinary lives are. The characters are centre stage and the writing is almost hypnotic in a way I can’t explain. I found myself absolutely absorbed once again in Maine, which has come to feel like another recurring character my heart swells at meeting again. Love, friendship, forgiveness and storytelling are at the centre of this novel. Strout fans will not be disappointed - is it just me or does Strout just get better and better? 21/52 Lucy aan zee - Elizabeth Strout Het vierde deel over Lucy Barton doet meteen vertrouwd aan. Zowel door de personages en de schrijfstijl maar ook omdat het een corona-roman is. Zulke herkenbare situaties, angsten en onzekerheden, eenzaamheid. Lucy wordt door haar ex-man William meegenomen van het gevaarlijke New York naar een rustig strandhuis in Maine. Ze denkt voor een paar weken maar uiteraard duurt het veel langer. Naast de corona perikelen komen er ook andere actualiteiten voorbij: George Floyd, de Capitoolbestorming. Lucy en William praten over het gevoel van diepe onvrede in het land. Ook zijn er de persoonlijke problemen, in hun relatie, met de dochters, met Lucy zelf. Ze vergelijkt de lockdown met haar kindertijd, ook vol angst en eenzaamheid. Een mooie vergelijking die Lucy maakt, vond ik deze: Mensen en hun relaties zijn als pingpongballen. Ze stuiteren rond en botsen willekeurig tegen elkaar aan, soms kort soms langer maar ze stuiteren ook weer weg, in ieder geval een beetje. En soms helemaal... "Oh Wiliam" acompanha a saga da Lucy Barton (10/2024), contando a história de uma viagem que seu ex-marido, William, decide fazer ao Maine em busca da história de sua família. O que eu gosto nos livros da Elisabeth é que são livros sobre acontecimento nenhum. Não há grandes explosões, não há nenhum susto ou reviravolta. São somente histórias sobre pessoas, suas lutas, descobertas, seus amores e como eles observam a vida. • Lucy by the Sea by Elizabeth Strout (2022) “What is it like to be you? I need to say: This is the question that has made me a writer; always that deep desire to know what it feels like to be a different person.” I adore Elizabeth Strout, her novels are both enjoyable and thought-provoking, her characters flawed but relatable. She has a wonderful sense of empathy which I suspect comes from a life of wondering how other people feel and think, how they are a product of their circumstances. “Who knows why people are different? We are born with a certain nature, I think. And then the world takes its swings at us.” The fourth Lucy book is a pandemic novel, and while that subgenre has been a little over represented in my reading recently, I was interested in this perspective of that time. Lucy and her ex-husband William escape New York City for the coast of Maine, and most of the plot centres on the shock of this change: estrangement from her daughters and friends, the culture shock of arriving in small-town America, the hugely different climate. While her relationship with William was the highlight of previous novel Oh William, here I found them less interesting together - but then weren’t all relationships strained by the forced seclusion of the lockdowns? What worked really beautifully for me though were Lucy’s reflections on the fractured nature of society, seen through political and religious differences, and through people’s reactions to the pandemic itself. “What I am trying to say is that for a few minutes I had what almost felt like a vision: that there was a deep, deep unrest in the country and that the whisperings of a civil war seemed to move around me like a breeze I could not quite feel but could sense.” This isn’t my favourite of the Lucy books but I did enjoy it a lot, especially the return of some of Strout’s characters and their interactions with Lucy, particularly Bob Burgess. Przyznam, że do sięgnięcia po „Lucy i morze” zachęciła mnie delikatna minimalistyczna okładka. Utrzymana w tonacjach bieli i błękitu wywarła kojący wpływ na mój przebodźcowany umysł.🤍 Wnętrze zadziałało podobnie, bo chociaż w powieści jest sporo smutku, niepewności i melancholii, to za każdym razem, kiedy zanurzałam się w świecie Lucy, ogarniał mnie spokój i wyciszenie. 📚 „Lucy i morze” - Elizabeth Strout ⭐ Subiektywna ocena – 4,5/6 🤝 @wielkalitera – #współpracabarterowa Historia rozpoczyna się w marcu 2020 roku, kiedy świat jeszcze nie wie, że za chwilę rozpęta się piekło. Jednak William, naukowiec, przeczuwa zbliżające się zagrożenie i przekonuje swoją byłą żonę, Lucy, do opuszczenia Nowego Jorku i zamieszkania z nim w Maine, w wynajętym domu nad oceanem. To, co w oczach kobiety miało być krótkimi wakacjami, okaże się miesiącami odcięcia od świata, przepełnionymi narastającym strachem o bliskich i niepewnością jutra. Narratorką jest sama Lucy, a książka przypomina formą dziennik, w którym migawki codzienności, fragmenty rozmów, opisy przyrody mieszają się z lękami i emocjami bohaterki, jej wciąż świeżą żałobą po drugim mężu i trudnymi wspomnieniami z dzieciństwa, wypływającymi na powierzchnię pod wpływem lockdownu. Wszystko to napisane prostym, przystępnym językiem. Lucy wydaje się niekiedy dość dziecinna i naiwna (choć to już kobieta mocno dojrzała), ma jednak świetny zmysł obserwacji i zdaje się autentycznie słuchać, widzieć i rozumieć innych. Pomimo początkowej irytacji, bardzo polubiłam tę postać, podobnie jak Williama, chociaż kiedyś był niezłym dupkiem i jakieś pozostałości tego stanu mu zostały.😉 Moje serce skradł jednak Bob, życzyłabym sobie spotkać kiedyś takiego przyjaciela. Jest taki blurb na okładce, z którym się w pełni zgadzam, dlatego go zacytuję: „nie tyle czytasz powieść Strout, co w niej żyjesz.” To właśnie książka o samym życiu: o miłości i stracie, o rodzicielstwie i starości, rodzinie, przyjaźni i lęku przed nieznanym. W prostocie tkwi jej siła, a niektóre spostrzeżenia Lucy, zdawałoby się oczywiste, potrafią głęboko zapaść w serce.🤍 ⬇️⬇️⬇️

Po lekturze najnowszej książki o Lucy Barton, zaczynam mieć wrażenie, że to nie tylko postać literacka, ale dobra znajoma, a czytanie kolejnych powieści o niej są niczym osobiste spotkanie. Czytając historie opowiadane przez Lucy mam wrażenie obcowanie z żywą osobą. To wszystko dzięki niesamowitemu talentowi pisarskiemu Elizabeth Strout, którą, nie ukrywam, uwielbiam od kiedy wiele lat temu poznałam jej bohaterkę Olive Kitteridge. W powieści "Lucy i morze" mamy okazję przyjrzeć się Lucy i jej bliskim w dramatycznym okresie pandemi 2020 roku. Gdy były mąż Lucy William zaniepokojony zagrożeniem pandemią namawia Lucy do wyjazdu z Nowego Jorku, ta decyduje się zrezygnować z trasy promocyjnej swojej najnowszej książki i razem wyjeżdżają do wynajętego domu w stanie Maine. Tam, w spokoju I odosobnieniu mają przeczekać kilkutygodniowy, według Williama, okres zagrożenia. Nie wiedzą obydwoje, że pobyt ten znacznie się wydłuży i będzie okazją do wielu chcianych i niechcianych przemyśleń na temat ich wzajemnych relacji, kontaktów z córkami ale i otaczającego świata. Jak zwykle silna, o ile nie przesadna wrażliwość Lucy pozwala przyjrzeć się dogłębnie wielu codziennym problemom nękającym zwykłego człowieka. Nawet jeśli nie są one, za sprawą jej uprzywilejowanej pozycji społecznej udziałem samej Lucy. Można się w refleksjach Lucy przeglądać niczym w lustrze i niejednokrotnie znaleźć jeśli nie pociechę, to przynajmniej zrozumienie. Dla Lucy ten okres okaże się, po początkowych trudnościach, szansą na zrozumienie własnych lęków i samotności towarzyszących jej niczym swoisty lockdown od wczesnego dzieciństwa. Sie lebt in einem Altersheim ganz in der Nähe von Lucys Haus am Meer, wie wir durch eine gemeinsame Bekannte der beiden, lesen können. So tauchen diese beiden literarischen Figuren in einem Buch auf, ohne, dass sie sich kennen. Aber wir. O pandemii Covid 19 nie lubimy za bardzo czytać. Za mało czasu upłynęło od tych wydarzeń, w niektórych rany po tej traumie są jeszcze zbyt świeże, żeby sięgać po literaturę dotycząca przeżyć sprzed paru lat. Nie przerobiliśmy tematu pandemii do końca, który u niektórych osób cały czas wywołuje wiele emocji. Do tematu pandemii wraca jednak w swojej najnowszej książce pt. „Lucy i morze” Elizabeth Strout. To kolejna opowieść z cyklu o pisarce Lucy Barton. Autorka w subtelny sposób snuje opowieść o pierwszych miesiącach pandemii, o nastrojach i sytuacji w Nowym Yorku i o ucieczce z tego wielkiego miasta Lucy zmienia pisarskie plany i ulegając namowom swojego byłego męża wyjeżdża razem z nim z miasta. Zmuszeni sytuacją do przebywanie obok siebie nieustanne, zaczynają układać wspólną codzienność. Autorka w charakterystyczny, oszczędny dla siebie sposób opowiada nam o początkach covidu, problemach wynikających z wybuchem pandemii, ogromnych stratach i pierwszych podziałach międzyludzkich wynikających z tego kryzysu. Książkę czyta się dosłownie jednym tchem. Proste zdania zmuszają do refleksji, do przypomnienia sobie tamtych ciężkich dla wszystkich dni i do ponownego przyjrzenia się temu co nam po tym smutnym czasie zostało. I choć to czwarta książka z serii o znanej pisarce, to Elizabeth Strout tak konstruuje swoje powieści, że można je czytać niezależnie. Elizabeth Strout és i serà una de les meves escriptores de capçalera. És que fa allò de fer-ho fàcil i llegir una vida amb tots els seus ets i uts, pensaments, alegries i tragèdies des de dins i clar, passa de pressa i entra a dins com si fos família. Arribem a l'última entrega de Lucy Barton. Aquest cop ens plantem el març de 2020 i si, ens parla de com va viure la pandèmia, però també de les relacions que es van forjant, dels canvis i els processos d'adaptació a les noves situacions, de l'actualitat del moment als Estats Units (polític i social) i també, perquè no, d'aquells que van marxar pel virus. Tot i que aquests potser ha estat el més fluix de tota la saga de Lucy Barton, tornar a ella és tornar a casa. Bo już tak mam, że po Jej książki zawsze sięgam z przyjemnością. I chociaż wiem, że opowiadane historie nie zaskoczą mnie niezwykle wartką akcją, to nie tego u Strout szukam i nie za tym tęsknię. Lubię śledzić losy pisarki Lucy Barton, jej rodziny i najbliższego otoczenia. Tak było i tym razem. „Lucy i morze” opowiada o czasach, w których cały świat miał kłopoty i pogrążył się w pandemii. Kiedy czytałam o przeżyciach Lucy, pod powiekami wyświetlały mi się obrazy z czasów, kiedy sama doświadczałam ogromnego strachu o najbliższych i niepewności związanej z nadejściem kolejnego dnia. Odnalazłam wiele własnych emocji z tamtego okresu, kiedy zagubienie i niepokój nie pozwalały zasnąć. 🤍 Czytałam różne opinie o tej książce, ale ja jako fanka twórczości Elizabeth Strout nie czuję się zawiedziona. Podoba mi się uniwersalność jej powieści, proste historie wywołujące emocje. Autorka jest wnikliwą obserwatorką rzeczywistości, potrafi oddać skomplikowany charakter rodzinnych relacji i poruszyć czytelnika. Following along from her other two novels, My Name is Lucy Barton and Anything is Possible, we now find Lucy in her 60’s, widowed, thinking and pondering her life. She is now a successful writer, her husband David has died, and William, her first husband is going through a rough time. He has discovered things about his life that leave him wondering - “Is it ever really possible to truly know anyone?” Lucy is also thinking about William, and the shared life they once had. They spend a lot of time reminiscing about their life together and their time with their two daughters. I found this novel wise, thought provoking and quietly beautiful. I actually enjoyed this more than the other two novels. Off to listen to Lucy By the Sea.. the fourth book in the series. Excited for the release of the fifth novel in August -Tell me Everything where Lucy meets Olive Kitteridge?! . “As we drove, I suddenly had a hideous memory of what a hideous thing marriage was for me at times— Those years with William. I proudly present: meine Lektüreauswahl für den diesjährigen Frühling. Und was für ein feiner Frühling das bisher ist 🌞 Wetter kann gerne noch ein paar Wochen so bleiben, nur etwas weniger Pollenflug wäre nice 😉 Fast fertig gelesen habe ich nun endlich "Oh William" von Elizabeth Strout. Da hatte ich zugegebenermaßen ein paar Startschwierigkeiten, hab's zwischenzeitlich immer mal wieder zur Seite gelegt. Aber irgendwie will ich doch wissen, wie es weiter und ausgeht (obwohl mir William nach wie vor nicht sympathisch ist). Vor kurzem habe ich außerdem "Beautiful World, where are you" von Sally Rooney begonnen und konnte wie schon in "Normal People" direkt mit den Protagonistinnen bonden. Und im buddy read mit @jacq_roe lese ich gerade "Schrödingers Grrrl" von Marlen Hobrack. Auch eine etwas schwierige Protagonistin, muss ich sagen; in ihrem Sein, Tun und Kommunizieren nicht immer ganz nachvollziehbar und manchmal sogar an der Grenze zur Unglaubwürdigkeit, aber das Buch zieht einen trotzdem in seinen Bann. Auf die anderen Titel freue ich mich schon wie bolle. Tell Me Everything is the latest in Elizabeth Strout’s Lucy Barton AND Olive Kitteridge series. Yes, that’s right, Lucy and Olive meet! Other books in the Lucy Barton series I believe can be read as standalone. For this one, it may be difficult to truly understand the characters without backstory. Let this be your push to read Strout’s previous books before this publishes on August 13th. Tell Me Everything follows Bob Burgess as he defends a man accused of killing his elderly mother. But to be very clear, this is not a mystery. It’s a quiet study of Bob and Lucy’s friendship and of the ordinary people of Crosby, Maine and the lives they lead. That’s the whole point of Strout’s series…to record unrecorded lives, no matter how grand. I really liked this. Strout has a way of pointing out the interconnectedness of beauty and sadness and I loved being back with these characters, watching their stories progress. We get to see the child in these broken adults, and theres a bit of magic there. On the other hand, something about the third person omniscient narration left me at a bit of a distance from these characters I’ve come to know and love. While this isn’t my favorite in the series, it’s still so worth a read. Elizabeth Strout - Am Meer 📚 - REZENSION - 📚 (übersetzt von Sabine Roth) „Am Meer“ war mein erstes Buch von Elizabeth Strout, auch wenn ich mir das eigentlich anders gedacht hatte. Idealistischerweise dachte ich zunächst, ich müsse die vorherigen Werke vorab lesen … habe ich aber natürlich doch nicht geschafft. 😅 Insofern bin ich völlig ohne Vorerfahrungen gestartet und war zugegebenermaßen im ersten Moment etwas irritiert angesichts des Schreibstils. Denn Elizabeth Strout schreibt schnörkellos, in glasklarer Sprache und erzeugt somit oberflächlich zunächst den Eindruck des Unspektakulären. Doch letztlich habe ich das Buch in kürzester Zeit verschlungen und mich ganz tief in die Geschichte und die Emotionen der Protagonistin Lucy hineinfühlen können. Und genau das ist das wirklich Spektakuläre an diesem Buch. Denn ich frage mich noch immer, wie eine Autorin es schafft, mit so schnörkelloser Sprache und völlig ohne Effekthascherei eine so tiefe Identifikation mit den Romanfiguren mit all ihren Ängsten und Sorgen zu erreichen. Faszinierend! 😃 Ein Satz, der mich auf so schlichte Weise sehr berührt hat, war: „Die Frage, warum manche mehr Glück haben als andere - es gibt wohl keine Antwort darauf.“ (S. 48) Aber nun von vorne: Lucy Barton lebt in New York, als 2020 die Corona-Pandemie ausbricht. Ihr Ex-Mann und noch immer guter Freund William hat daher für sie beide ein abgelegenes Haus an der Küste von Maine gemietet. Lucy lässt sich überreden, New York zu verlassen und aus Sicherheitsgründen, die sie zunächst noch nicht ganz nachvollziehen kann, ein paar Wochen dort zu verbringen. Trzecia część to powrót do skupienia na Lucy, a raczej na tytułowym ‘Williamie’, jej pierwszym mężu. Mam wrażenie, jak rzadko się zdarza w przypadku serii, że każda kolejna książka jest lepsza. William ma 71 lat i jest w punkcie życia, w którym mierzy się z przeszłością. Psychologiczne studium przypadku, poszukiwanie korzeni, skomplikowane relacje, a wszystko z perspektywy Lucy, byłej żony, obserwatorki bynajmniej nie bezstronnej. Przenikliwe obserwacje, piękne (choć minimalistyczne w formie) zdania, niespieszna narracja i inspiracje do refleksji nad własnym życiem. Esta Semana Santa he leído “Ay, William”, de Elisabeth Strout, reconocida escritora norteamericana. 📚 En su obra la autora suele hablar de relaciones familiares y de amistad, pero de las temáticas de esta novela yo querría destacar una. Diría que una de las ideas que Strout más deja entrever en la historia es cómo las experiencias de los padres marcan la educación de los hijos (por ejemplo, que esos padres sean veteranos de guerra, como es el caso de su protagonista, Lucy Barton). Y nos plantea cómo esa educación abre interrogantes en nuestra propia vida a los que no cesamos de buscar respuestas para quedar en paz con esos padres. Pero, independientemente de qué asuntos toque la autora en sus novelas, siento que esa escritora es un bálsamo. O quizá no sea ella, quizá sea Lucy Barton, su personaje. Sólo he leído dos novelas de esta saga, la primera, “Me llamo Lucy Barton” y ésta última. Y aunque la primera narraba una relación muy difícil, la de Lucy con su madre, la atmósfera que se respiraba en esa historia vuelve y vuelve a la memoria. Strout es contagiosa. Me doy cuenta de que la reseño con un tono parecido a la voz de su Lucy. No sé bien qué es. Naturalidad, espontaneidad, un alma joven… Sólo sé que la Lucy de “Ay, William”, una mujer ya madura, divorciada, con hijas mayores, me ha vuelto a enamorar. ¿Cómo ha sido capaz la autora de hacer madurar a su personaje y que conserve esa personalidad única? Strout también debe de ser un bálsamo porque no nos avasalla con detalles ni peripecia, porque fluye en el tiempo como se escurre el agua de un río entre las piedras, con un leve ruido. Ein stilles Buch, ein Buch, das zum Mitfühlen und Mitdenken anregt. Ein Buch über Verluste, Wiederentdeckungen und die Liebe. Num dos diálogos do livro, Lucy, que é escritora, está ouvindo conselhos de outra escritora num workshop, e esta veterana diz: você só tem uma história, e você irá contá-la, de diferentes maneiras. Olhando agora em reetrospecto para todos os livros da Elisabeth que li, acho que a história dela é da relação de pessoas solitárias com seus filhos. Em Amy & Isabelle é entre mãe e filha, assim como em Lucy Barton. Olive Kitteridge é com seu filho e seus alunos. Burgess Boys entre os irmãos e aquela mãe deles. Sempre pessoas atravessadas por uma tristeza imensa. "Gostamos de escritores que tentam dizer alguma coisa verdadeira para você (p. 39)". O que eu vejo em Lucy Barton é alguma identificação com o medo, a solidão e a vontade de nunca mais voltar para certos lugares, mas eu também vejo uma janela aberta para a esperança, para o mundo futuro que ela deixa em aberto Como eu sou otimista, acho que a Lucy se encontrou, e deu tudo certo pra ela. I don’t know why but I kinda had a craving to read some Elizabeth Strout recently and luckily for me my local library had all of the Amgash novels! I’ve already read My Name is Lucy Barton (which kind of broke my heart!) so I borrowed the rest, starting with Anything is Possible. Although Lucy does feature in this novel, it’s also about the other people living in her hometown of Amgash, Illinois. Each chapter focuses on a specific character or characters but all of the stories are interconnected so we meet them on both a personal level and also through the eyes of others, which I find really interesting. It’s a reminder that we all have our own individual inner worlds, that we are all more complex than we might appear to be. I don’t think Strout makes excuses for her characters or tries to make them more likeable, but I do think she has empathy for them or at least just allows them to be human. And although Lucy does only appear in person in one chapter it was my favourite part of the book - so tense and sad and realistic. Strout is one of my favourite authors and I’m really quite in awe of how she writes in quite a simple and subtle way about big emotions and profound truths. I think her writing is beautiful.

„Am Meer“ ist der dritte Roman von Elizabeth Strout, dessen Hauptfigur und Ich-Erzählerin Lucy Barton ist. Ich habe von den drei Büchern lediglich diesen letzten gelesen, doch ich habe auch noch an beiden früheren „Die Unvollkommenheit der Liebe“ („My Name Is Lucy Barton“) und „Oh, William!“ Interesse. „Am Meer“ spielt während der Covid-Pandemie. William, ihr ehemaliger Ehemann, rettet Lucy aus ihrer New Yorker Wohnung und zieht mit ihr nach Maine, in ein altes Haus an der Küste des Ozeans. Sie machen regelmäßig Spaziergänge, doch leben zurückgezogen, wie die meisten älteren Menschen, um von der Gefahr fernzubleiben. Lucy ist eine Schriftstellerin, die sich in dieser Situation einfach fehl am Platz fühlt. Zum einen ist mein Eindruck, dass Lucy zum Auftakt des Romans irritierend ahnungslos in Anbetracht der Pandemie ist, demnächst aber die Todesfälle in ihrem Bekanntenkreis in ihr das Gefühl einer Art Apokalypse wecken. Zum anderen scheint es mir so, als ob es Lucy nur um Mütter und Töchter ginge: Sie erzählt über ihre Ehen, ihre Welt scheint nur um ihre Töchter zu drehen. Das täuscht aber. "ich glaube, wer nie, na ja, wer nie arm war, der nimmt das vielleicht nicht so wahr und denkt, es ginge um Mütter und Töchter, was ja auch stimmt, aber im Kern, das war jedenfalls mein Gefühl, geht es um die Klassenschranken in unserem Land, um den Versuch, sie zu überwinden, und ...." sagt der verständnisvolle Freund Bob Burgess über Lucys Bücher (S. 37). Durch den Roman zieht meiner Meinung nach der Schatten, wie eine Vision, des Untergangs New York. Hinzu kommt, dass der zweite Teil des Romans (ab der Seite 113.) mit der Schilderung der Ermordung von George Floyd in Minneapolis beginnt. Später erfahren wir, wie empört William und Lucy über den Sturm auf das Kapitol in Washington waren. "ich weiß nicht... als wären alle auf der Welt wild geworden, und ich kann nur sagen, meiner Meinung nach steuer wir auf eine Katastrophe zu. Jeder geht jedem an die Gurgel. 🌊 • Aspetto sempre con ansia i libri di Elizabeth Strout. Quando Einaudi ha annunciato l’uscita di “Lucy davanti al mare”, mi sono fiondata a pre-ordinarlo, fremendo nell’attesa di immergermi tra le sue pagine. Ma questo capitolo della saga di Lucy Barton non mi ha convinta del tutto. È una sorta di diario del lockdown, che Lucy passa con il marito William in una casa affittata in riva al mare, lontano dal caos e dai pericoli di New York. Capitolo dopo capitolo, oltre a rivivere contro voglia alcuni dettagli di quel periodo, mi sono ritrovata ad avere a che fare con personaggi con molto meno spessore del solito. Forse è voluto, perché il lockdown ha in qualche modo “appiattito” chiunque? Arrivata alla fine mi ha strappato una lacrima, come la Strout in fondo riesce sempre a fare. Ed è stato bello vedere come alcuni legami famigliari possono apparentemente indebolirsi per poi rafforzarsi. Ma nel complesso ho trovato meno spunti di riflessione rispetto ai capitoli precedenti, e non ho sentito quel moto di comprensione che di solito mi fa dire “cavolo, mi ci rivedo così tanto” a quasi ogni pagina. Questo mi impedirà di continuare a pre-ordinare tutto ciò che scrive, e a cambiare i miei piani per cercare di incontrarla al Salone del Libro di Torino quest’anno? ELIZABET STRAUT SVE JE MOGUĆE Posle dve knjige o junakinji Lusi Barton ( „Zovem se Lusi Barton“ i „O, Vilijame!“) morala sam da pročitam i ovu, to jednostavno tako ide, kad zavolite neku književnicu i likove koje je stvorila. Knjiga „Sve je moguće“ je, uslovno rečeno, zbirka priča. Može da se čita i bez „predznanja“, kao sasvim odvojena knjiga. Ali je lepše kad se zna ko je Lusi i ko su ljudi koji kroz ove priče prolaze. To su, naime, mnogi sporedni likovi iz prethodnih knjiga Elizabet Straut. Uglavnom ljudi vezani za najtraumatičniji deo Lusinog života, detinjstvo, provedeno u siromaštvu i bolu. Šta je bilo posle sa svim tim ljudima, u kakvoj su oni vezi, na koji način je sama Lusi Barton ostala u njihovim uspomenama i da li postoji mogućnost da se pobegne, kojim stazama, iz tegobnog početka, to je ono čime se ove priče bave. Svaka priča za sebe pravi je mali medaljon. A sve zajedno, njih deset, daju nam novu, dodatnu perspektivu na ono što smo do tada pročitali. U svakoj priči otvara nam se još ponešto o tim junacima. Lucy Barton è un personaggio già conosciuto ed amato, ed in questa storia si conferma la freschezza del suo sguardo attento all’umanità ed alle piccole cose che ci circondano e che spesso rendono tutto il senso della vita e dell’amore che sono, in fin dei conti, ciò che di più prezioso abbiamo. Le relazioni familiari, l’amore, i rapporti con gli altri e le emozioni di fronte ad avvenimenti storici che irrompono e che scuotono (l’omicidio di George Floyd, l’assalto a Capitol Hill): tutto ciò è presente in questa vicenda intima ed allo stesso tempo collettiva che restituisce un senso di straniamento e di sgomento, nel periodo ovattato e tremendo che abbiamo vissuto tra il 2020 ed il 2021. Elizabeth Strout è una scrittrice che riesce a confessare e ad esprimere in modo quasi impressionista i propri sentimenti più contraddittori: la paura, il rimpianto, la rabbia, la dolcezza, lo stupore, ciò che la porta a dire che questa nostra Terra è, nello stesso tempo, “triste e bellissima”. Wenn ein Buch so wunderbar ist wie dieses, was soll ich denn jetzt noch lesen, hab ich mich vorhin gefragt, nachdem ich "Am Meer" zugeklappt habe. Aber das denke ich immer, wenn ich einen Roman von Elizabeth Strout beendet habe. Besonders die, in denen es um die Schriftstellerin Lucy Barton geht. Ich kenne niemanden sonst, der so wie Elizabeth Strout in der Lage ist, kleine Geschichten ganz groß zu machen, indem sie sie - zumindest auf den ersten Blick - "nur" mit ein paar Federstrichen zu erzählen scheint, aber jedes einzelne Wort, jedes Komma so auswählt und setzt, dass diese Sätze am Ende nicht anders können, als den Leser mitten ins Herz zu treffen. Und dann dieses Gefühl, als säße man mit Lucy Barton am Küchentisch und sie würde einfach - die Dinge wirklich auf das Wesentliche reduziert - aus ihrem Leben plaudern, und man selbst würde jedes Wort inhalieren. Was sich vielleicht einfach anhört, ist eine hohe Kunst. Ich frage mich immer wieder, wie sie das macht. Jedenfalls: Ich möchte allen Feinsinnigen dieses Buch empfehlen.Das meine ich... Es spielt zu Corona-Zeiten in einem Haus an der Küste von Maine und erzählt von einer Geschichte, die viele von uns in Teilen vielleicht selbst erlebt haben und von einer, die in anderen Teilen erstaunt und tief berührt. Le mie letture 😷 Cara Elizabeth Strout, tu sei una scrittrice meravigliosa, una delle mie preferite, mai mi sarei aspettata di indirizzarti una mia letterina di biasimo... eppure. A me Lucy Barton piace, è un personaggio reale, incasinato, una donna a tratti egoista e a tratti troppo generosa. Una di noi. Ma adesso anche basta. Ho capito che la pandemia ha colpito e anche tu hai sentito il bisogno di parlarne. Ma non potevi farlo con personaggi nuovi? Lo dico con grande affetto ed immensa seccatura. Mi mancano le tue storie, le tue famiglie anticonvenzionali, quei rapporti che ti spingono a riflettere sulla vita, quel mondo di provincia in cui non succede nulla mentre succede di tutto. Mi manca un capolavoro come Resta con me (anche Olive, ma leggete Resta con me e capirete di cosa parlo). Ecco, cara Elizabeth, lasciamo Lucy a vivere la sua vita mentre tu inventi nuove storie. 📕 L' epidemia di Covid si diffonde a New York e William, l'ex marito, chiede a Lucy Barton di trasferirsi con lui nel Maine, per sicurezza. Lucy accetta ed inizia una convivenza che sarà per entrambi illuminante. 😷 La capacità della Strout di descrivere gli stati d'animo ha del sovrumano. Lei lo fa con naturalezza, attraverso piccoli gesti o frasi sibilline ti spalanca l'universo dei pensieri e dei sentimenti. 😷 Il problema di questo libro è che Lucy la conosciamo troppo bene, e William, andando avanti si stanno complicando troppo, o semplificando se vogliamo. Non c'è più la freschezza, la sorpresa che ti provoca un personaggio come Lucy Barton. 😷 Tornano personaggi degli altri libri della Strout, da Bob Burgees a Olive Kitteridge. Non sono sicura che questo mi sia piaciuto. Mi è sembrato di profanare storie bellissime che dovevano rimanere lì, cristallizzate. Åh, Elizabeth Strout! vill jag utbrista efter att ha läst romanen Åh William! av henne. Jag har blivit kär i denna roman och har njutit av varje ord, varje mening under läsningen. Jag har tidigare läst andra romaner av Elizabeth Strout och visst har jag tyckt om dem, men de har inte varit så fantastiska som denna. Har du läst Mitt namn är Lucy Barton eller Vad som helst är möjligt, får du i Åh William! återigen möta Lucy Barton, en författare med en komplicerad och, såväl känslomässigt som ekonomiskt, fattig uppväxt. I Åh William! har Lucy Bartons man och själsfrände David avlidit och hennes exman William har blivit lämnad av sin yngre fru. Lucy och exmaken, som har två gemensamma döttrar, har genom alla år hållit kontakten och nu intensifieras den, inte minst för att William vill ha Lucy med på en resa som rymmer en familjehemlighet. De båda behöver varandra och inte, men ändå. “Åh, William!” är en av Lucy återkommande fras i romanen. Den rymmer vemod, sorg, kärlek, sympati, närhet och distans. Lucy och William känner varandra så väl, med förtjänster och brister, och trots att äktenskapet sprack finns det fortfarande så mycket kvar dem emellan; empati, sympati och nostalgi, men även sådant som är ouppklarat och outredda besvikelser. Romanens språk är rakt och okomplicerat och jag upplever ofta att Lucy Barton pratar direkt med mig. Hon vill försäkra sig om att jag förstår vad hon menar. Ofta återkommande fraser är “det är det jag menar”, “jag menar att ...” och “det är det jag vill få fram”. Lite förvånad är jag över att detta inte stör min läsning, tvärtom får det mig att känna mig omhuldad och indragen i hennes tankevärld. Jag har tidigare endast läst Mitt namn är Lucy Barton samt Olive igen. Jag har, till min glädje, alltså fler romaner av Elizabeth Strout kvar att fördjupa mig i. Titel: Åh, William! #internationalwomensday It seems it’s International Women’s Day. But rather than concentrate on the women writers on my shelves, I thought I’d look at the women ‘characters’ who inhabit some of my books. I’ve posted about quite a lot of women writers since the #womancrushwednesday hashtag came into usage; in fact my books written by women seem to have been in a constant state of bookshelf flux. The characters on the spines of these books are classic names like Jane Eyre, Emma, Tess of the d’Urbervilles. And modern classic characters like Mrs Dalloway, My Cousin Rachel and My Antonia. Then there are the contemporary characters I’ve come to know and love, like Olive Kitteridge and Lucy Barton. I was intrigued by Eleanor Oliphant too, and the ‘new on the scene’ Rachel from Irish writer Caroline O’Donoghue.** Who are the favourite women on the spines of your books? I was just going to grab one novel at the library and ended up with three. These three Elizabeth Strout novels follow a single protagonist, Lucy Barton, over a number of years. It was so interesting to read them back-to-back, to think about the way we get to know people (fictional or real!), to dip in and out of someone’s life. Three novels and I still feel like there is more to know about Lucy Barton. I love Strout’s work for the reappearing characters and simplicity of her plots. Lucyn tarina tuntuu jo jotenkin nähdyltä, ja fiilis uudesta kirjasta on ennemminkin "taas sinä" kuin "onpa kiva nähdä pitkästä aikaa". Silti suurin syy kirjan tökkimiseen on koronassa, jonka Strout tuo niin lähelle ja niin todentuntuisena, että tekisi mieli melkein varmistaa, että kaapissa on varmasti riittävästi vessapaperia (koko loppuelämäksi). Most of the stories are of hard backgrounds, difficult childhoods and extreme poverty. Successful New York writer Lucy Barton (who we first meet in Strout's My Name is Lucy Barton) grew up in this very town and after a long absence, returns to visit her siblings who are still struggling with their memories. Despite the sadness of a lot of the issues in this book, there is a sense of hope as suggested by the title. Oh William! by Elizabeth Strout ああ、ウィリアム　エリザベス・ストラウト After seeing Strout’s books everywhere for a few years, this is my first Strout and I was immediately immersed into the Lucy Barton’s storytelling. I couldn’t put it down! Through Lucy’s eyes, you get to know William, her first husband’s upbringing and his life. One’s upbringing is not something that you have a control. It’s a past. I don’t know the exact ratio, but a certain part of you are results of how you were raised. William asks Lucy to travel from New York to Maine to trace his deceased mother’s early life and possibly meet his half-sister who he didn’t know existed. The road trip is whimsical, painful and emotional. Lucy and William are good companions after their divorce and help each other while maintaining a civil relationship with each other’s new partners and children. But, as Lucy reflects on their weaknesses, pathetic traits, excuses, and each other’s family history, especially the mothers, it forces them to face the stories that were not told before. Strout’s character development is strong and compelling. Aging is one of the facts Lucy and William are dealing with and I get some of their feelings. Now I have to read three more books about Lucy Barton’s life. It’s sad and humous and very real with the conclusion that you don’t quite know what life other people are living. 📚BOOK REVIEW📚 Wow, how can such a short book have such an impact? I now completely understand the outpouring of love for Elizabeth Strout’s writing, I devoured this deeply perceptive book in one sitting . Lucy Barton is in hospital, an undiagnosed illness following a routine operation separating her from her husband and young daughters. Her estranged mother unexpectedly visits, and quietly resides in the bedside chair for 5 nights, revealing a complicated relationship with heaps of repressed emotion and unspoken words. Narrated retrospectively by Lucy, we are shown snippets of her life and how her childhood full of poverty, abuse and loneliness shaped her going forwards. Lucy is stoic, and much is left unsaid, yet she uses her difficulties in life as prompts to become a writer, and despite her emotionally distant parents, she continues to love, and for this I find her truly admirable. I enjoy a character driven read, and this book was entirely observant of human nature, particularly the impact of one’s past, and also the complexities that can exist in the mother-daughter relationship. It explores the impact of trauma and childhood attachments, or lack of, and is incredible in the way it turns itself on to you, the reader. I think each and every reader would get something individual from this book as it serves as a real introspective and observant piece that you can’t help but think about in terms of your own self. Strout is a master at saying so much without saying much at all, whilst creating an undercurrent of emotions and questions throughout. Beautifully simplistic and deeply human, I can’t wait to read more of this series. Are the others as good as this?

Anche le mie orecchie sorridevano all’uscita di LUCY DAVANTI AL MARE di Elizabeth Strout, edito da Einaudi con la traduzione di Susanna Basso. Del resto è la mia autrice contemporanea preferita, colei che come nessun’altra sconosciuta considero alla stregua di un’amica. Ancora una volta, la sua voce rigorosa e perfetta sa raccontare la vita della scrittrice Lucy Barton nel quarto libro che la vede protagonista (dopo “Mi chiamo Lucy Barton”, “Tutto è possibile” e “Oh William!”), una voce che pur essendo potente è sempre sussurrata, e ciò si riflette nella scrittura confidenziale e paragrafata, molto efficace nel descrivere anche, e forse soprattutto, il non detto. All’inizio del 2020 il Covid sconvolge la vita di tutti: William, ex marito di Lucy, la convince a lasciare New York per andare con lui nel Maine, guarda caso nella città fittizia di Crosby, la stessa dove abita Olive Kitteridge, un’altra dei protagonisti dei libri della Strout. Trovarla citata nelle pagine di questo libro mi ha emozionata davvero. Come pure il fatto che Bob Burgess (sì, uno de “I ragazzi Burgess”, altro romanzo della Strout) diventi un amico importante per Lucy. I suoi personaggi così si mescolano tra loro, convivono, diventano reali. E sono tutti straordinari. La routine che si instaura nel lockdown, le onde del mare che si ripetono consolatorie, l’incertezza legata al virus letale, l’impossibilità di abbracciarsi, le relazioni che mutano, il sentirsi fuori luogo neanche tanto metaforicamente, quella «sensazione di stare sott’acqua; come se le cose non fossero vere» ricordano come siamo stati in quel periodo: spersi e pieni di paura, increduli perfino («È incredibile come la mente si rifiuti di incamerare una cosa, se non è pronta»).
