The Namesake I read this novel last year, and I don't think I ever accumulated thoughts around it. It was my first novel where the theme revolved around immigrants life. It was a profound learning exploration of duality and the struggle to find belonging between two cultures. And how beautifully Lahiri writes about ordinary life, depicting specific cultural themes. The Namesake follows Ashoke and Ashima, a young Indian couple, who arrive in the U.S. with contrasting desires. Ashoke, ambitious and forward-looking, seeks new opportunities. Ashima, filled with a longing for home, grapples with loneliness in this strange new land. Their son, Gogol, enters the world in this unfamiliar environment, navigating cultural differences and the search for identity. Gogol struggles to forge his own identity while acknowledging the namesakes—the experiences, traditions, and heritage. It's a story about how the things that make us different can also be the things that bring us home. I couldn't recommend this more❤️ Have you read any of Jhumpa Lahiri's other novels? If yes, which one is your favorite? #thenamesake #namesake #jhumpalahiri #jhumpalahiriquotes #bookrecommendations📚 #booktoread #readreadread

Whereabouts by Jhumpa Lahiri is about an unnamed narrator in an unnamed place , her mundane life and lonely existence . There is no mention of where she is from , her religion or her background just a couple of things here and there about her parents and about some family friends , neighbours etc also unnamed . Lahiri references places as “the city”, “the neighbourhood” etc and I found it quite interesting and unique. As readers we assume that the narrator lives in Italy because there are mentions of pizzas and piazzas - but beyond those the environment is very generic and the fact that the book itself was originally written in Italian and translated to English by the author herself . It was published in Italy in 2018 as Dove mi trovo, which literally translates as “Where I find myself” . The book has interesting titles marking her everyday landmarks (let’s say !?) chapter titles like “In the Villa”, “At the sea”, “In the Bookstore”, “At the Beautician”, etc - which are her experiences both alone and with strangers. If you are someone who looks for a plot in a book this isn’t for you but like me if you enjoy reading about mundane characters , solitude , belonging and in general ones musings . Also a great pick for AAPI heritage month if you are looking for some recommendations ! Q: No questions today my mind is blank ! Finished reading Jhumpa Lahiri’s Unaccustomed Earth. After reading her recent works on life in Italy, and her journey with the Italian language, this one returns to familiar territory - stories on immigration. Bengali families, American university towns, identity crisis, it is all in here. While readers complain about Jhumpa writing on the same subject repeatedly, I have always found comfort in her words. There are a few authors who I can pick up at any time, sit by the window with a cup of tea, and immerse myself into their world with joy. Jhumpa is one such writer for me, and I will gladly read everything she wishes to pen down. I especially loved the story of a widower finding love and hiding it from his daughter out of guilt, only for the reader to discover the daughter silently supporting it. 4/5 🌟 for this beauty.

#jhumpalahiri #raccontiromani #romanstories

21/2024 If you didn’t know until now that Jhumpa Lahiri is in love with all things Italian, you would know by reading her latest collection of short stories she wrote in Italian and then co-translated to English. As a matter of fact, I love everything she has ever written and Roman stories are no different. Her sentences are minimalist and sober, she can say a lot with a little. Although this minimalism might be a byproduct of writing in a language that is not her mother tongue (if I remember well she learnt it as an adult), it doesn’t do any harm to the flow of the stories. None of the characters in Roman stories have names, which makes them universal, but not at all impersonal. These stories could happen anywhere but they take place mainly in Italy, in Rome, in the city on Tiber, the city Lahiri loves. The characters are immigrants that look for their place, expats that can’t find their place and long to be elsewhere, visitors or tourists, native Italians who stick to the places they grew up in, out of nostalgia, out of habit. Lahiri looks at the Italian society with an unblinking eye of somebody who loves its culture and language but at the same time sees all the xenophobia and racism, the hypocrisy of the petty bourgeoisie. Her stories are wonderful and sharp; they feel nostalgic and vivacious at the same time. Lahiri is a genius writer of short stories and definitely my most favorite author of the genre, unbeaten until this day… 💛💛💛💛/5 #bookrecommendations #shortstories #jhumpalahiri #romanstories #lovereading #booklover #bookworm #livrestagram #bookstagram #bibliophile #booklover

You know how I always say that I like easy writers, that not someone with the best vocabulary can also understand. But with Jhumpa Lahiri, I am stunned. I finished this book, but I still can’t come to terms with it. Yeah, I did finish it but I am speechless, I have no idea how to explain what I am feeling. One, she has such great linguistic abilities, no wonder there were more than 2 pages of “praises for the book”. Anyways, Jhumpa’s linguistic abilities is FANTASTIC. I would have otherwise said it was complicated, but this isn’t. Her writing is great, however, this book isn’t for ‘easy’ book readers, I am not sure if I can say “like me”, because I LOVED certain chapters of this book but this is more like a gorgeous piece of complicated work. This is to be precise an autobiography, a diary entry of sorts, she goes on and on about her relationship with a foreign language. I mean can you imagine writing a whole book on your journey with a language!? This isn’t easy! And she’s done a brilliant job! This book, honestly, did get me feeling lost, but I had to stick through it. And I must agree on the fact that she writes well. I mean I did say I lost track while reading, but her writing style, language, it’s all lovely. It’s brilliant actually. I would mostly ask someone who their favourite authors are, before recommending this book, because I am not sure if everyone will enjoy the book, so based on the authors they like, I can choose to recommend it or not :) ⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 #jhumpalahiri #inotherwords #pulitzer #pulitzerprize #literature #jhumpalahiriquotes #book #books #bookrecommendations #bookreview #bookrecs #fyp #feature #autobiography #fiction #nonfiction

whereabouts by jhumpa lahiri was first written and published in italian, in 2018, which lahiri, then also translated to english. the title in italian is ‘dove mi trovo’, which loosely translates to, ‘where i am’. the novel is composed of very short 48 chapters, each like a fragmentation of space, a beat of heart, and the trailings of the mind of an unnamed protagonist in her 40s. i love the title! i think it is beautifully and aptly translated; the word ‘whereabouts’ is spatial, its abstract, and wholly captures the novel’s intent. the novel feels like a stack of postcards. each chapter, [named after places/spaces— “on the street”, “in spring”, “in the hotel”, “at my house”] is an entry by the protagonist, which has ends, no ends, and sometimes loose ends. at best, it is like a careful ensemble of cluttered thoughts—the most mundane, yet the most significant. the prose, at its core, is so human. when she writes, “solitude: it’s become my trade”, and when she describes the people in the party as fishes in the aquarium, when she compares books and opened empty luggage looking like books with no volumes, when she talks about the little girl who leaves an errant line of pen on her sofa, when she writes, “is there any place we’re not moving through?”, and when she calls the stationery shop her beloved. lahiri captures isolation and loneliness in fascinating language and adjectives, brilliant mundanity, and real emotions. perhaps, the protagonist is some versions of her ownself. the novel is not strictly bound to a timeline, yet it has a beginning and an end. the story conveys a tantalising atmosphere, a justified personification of a city, fleeting and permanent emotions, and the manifestations of in-describable feelings/emotives into words. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 [ 🏷️ book review / bookstagrammer / bookstagram / book aesthetics / book quotes / book annotations / delhi / books to read / book recommendations / fiction prose / book reading / book club ]

📕 Review: Whereabouts by Jhumpa Lahiri This book is an ode to the nuances of life we overlook or miss because we are so busy chasing things which we know will eventually fade away yet still do it. It's like peeking into someone's personal diary. The book is written like a beautiful prose. The writing is impeccable. This is a story about a woman living alone in a small town observing the mundane things daily. She takes us on the journey of her daily mundane activities through her not so rose colored glasses but of melancholy and solitude. It's about a paradoxical take on life. She is a middle-aged woman, she wants to belong yet wants to be detached at the same time. She has a belief system that has been bred from two imperfect and entirely different people, albeit faulty. This book and her character is something you could resonate with most of the time because it's like a memory down the lane. Where she was the only common thing between her parents, where she collected the stationery she knew she would never use, where she refuses to be just a convenient option for a good time for him, where she always felt icky with so many people around, where she is content with her friend giving her a tiniest bit of affection, where she cannot look at certain trinkets without hating herself, where she would understand the plight of her parents yet she couldn't forgive them, where she is alone with friend and for a single moment she thinks what would happen if she does something despicable, where she thinks of a dawn as something beautiful yet at the same time she considers it as a stasis of her life. The book reflects the raw emotions known to human kind which are somewhat suppressed by the flimsy exteriors of the persona. As evolving humans we have also mastered the art of masking our emotions. So to be honest as per me, this book is a journey towards self-reflection. It's beautiful, soothing, balm to an aching soul, it hits home. This book is a LITERARY MASTERPIECE and it's a MUST READ. PS: Thank you @aish.bookworm for recommending this gem to me. #literarymasterpieces #jhumpalahiri #whereabouts #introspectivebooks #selfreflection #beautifulprose #beautifulbook

What are you planning to read this weekend? 🤔 📚CURRENTLY READING 📘1 - I’m still plodding through Ariel by Andre Maurois, a slightly fictionalised/romanticised Percy Shelley biography. . 📗2 - I’m also finishing up a reread of A Room with a View by EM Forster. It’s sooo good. I’d forgotten how good it was. . 📚NEXT UP 📙3 - The Island of Missing Trees by Elif Shafak, which I liberated from @haslemerebookshop yesterday. I enjoyed her 10 Minutes 38 Seconds in This Strange World so much I had to try another. 📕4 - Lelia, the Life of George Sand, also by Andre Maurois. 📚THE LAST TWO I FINISHED WERE: 📘5 - Roman Stories by Jhumpa Lahiri . 📗6 - Tender Is the Flesh by Agustina Bazterrica. . Goodreads reviews and scores have been posted for the last two. 👍🏼 And here are three pics of the Southbank Book Market in London. 😀 Have great weekends! #southbankbookmarket #bookmarket #southbanklondon #agustinabazterrica #jhumpalahiri #andremaurois #percyshelley #georgesand #emforster #aroomwithaview #elifshafak #currentlyreading #currentread #bookblogger #bookreview #tbr #lastnownext #lastnownextbooks #lastnownextreads #haslemerebookshop

#bookstagram #bookstagramro #bookstagramromania #booklover #cititoridinromania #audiobook #placerealecturii #jhumpalahiri #interpretuldemaladii #edituranemira

24 • 05 • 24 Jhumpa Lahiri appreciation post. Interpreter of Maladies I read in University and was so astounded by Lahiri’s succinct and sharp voice. I remember being spellbound by the book and unable to understand or comprehend my feelings on it. Whereabouts was a collection that haunted me when I read it. I saw it in the new hardback section of waterstones and immediately recognised the name but couldn’t place what I had read of hers before. As soon as I read the first story I recalled the feeling of first reading Lahiri like it was happening all over again. Roman Stories is by far my favourite book of hers. Just exquisite and all consuming - her provoking and beautiful prose is unmatched.

Do you have a favourite book cover? 🤔 This is one of mine - the grey spine penguin Carson McCullers’ The Heart is a Lonely Hunter. It’s just 👌🏽 ❤️ And in current reading… 📚 I finished Tender is the Flesh by Augustina Bazterrica yesterday. It’s got an original concept, which comes with its own pressures, but just about manages to deliver on it. After slowish start it pulled me in, and gave me much food for thought. . I’ve also Jhumpa Lahiri’s Roman Stories. My first JL, and she can really write. I’m generally not a fan of short stories but she really knows her craft and her characters walk off the page even though they only get a few pages each. . And, after talking about EM Forster two days ago, I uncontrollably started a reread of A Room with a View. It’s even better than I remembered.

Wesselenyi. #jhumpalahiri

📚Book Review 📚 After months of intense and unbearable heat, nature has finally yielded to gentle and gracious showers. When nature is this kind, one has to make most of it....right?☺️So here I am, nestled by my favorite window, cradling a steaming cup of coffee, and trying to pen down the review of a book that has captivated me. *********************************************************** The book I want to share today is, 'Whereabouts' by Jhumpa Lahiri. A novel that seemingly encapsulates everything yet revolves around nothing, a paradox that I find charming. Narrated as if leafing through the pages of a private journal, we journey alongside an Italian professor in her forties. She is a woman with whom I felt an intimate connection —a soul who dwells in solitude, occasionally at odds with it, but predominantly in harmony with her own company. she finds solace in observing the lives unfolding around her, deriving immense satisfaction from the mundane act of acquiring stationery, living in her modest abode that is home to a thousand books.I adore her, like one cherishes an imperfect piece of art. Lahiri's writing has Bewitched me . How effortlessly she titles her chapters as --'In the Coffee Shop,' 'In My Head,' 'In the House'—painting the mundane life of a woman with such captivating colours, that beholds the reader. The theme of 'solitude' is beautifully explored and expressed. Discovering this book that was nowhere near my tbr,was serendipitous. I am forever thankful to @happy__reading for this book recommendation. ~Juna💌 #whereabouts #jhumpalahiri #janenjuna #solitude #livepraylove #thebookwhispererz #bookworm #bookwormsofinstagram

Interpreter of Maladies by Jhumpa Lahiri

📚⭐️Book Review ⭐️📚 ✨The Lowland by Jhumpa Lahiri✨ How is your relationship with your sibling? Is it competitive, is there any animosity or is it just pure love and compassion for another? This one is Jhumpa’s best work I have read yet. A must-read for sure. This masterpiece by Jhumpa is suspenseful and tragic too. There once came a moment when I wanted to put it down cos of the description of the tragedy unfolding but I was unable to do so as I was completely absorbed in it. This story is about fate, will, exile, return and changing relationships. I would give it a 4.5/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ It is a truly engrossing novel about two brothers, Subash and Udhyan, who went separate ways cos of their priorities in life. One leaves the country for further study and the other chooses to remain in the country for political passion which in the end engulfs his life. But when Subhash learns about his brother’s death in the lowland outside their family’s home. He returns to India, hoping to pick up the pieces of shattered family, and the wounds Udayan left behind ( for his parents and his wife, Gauri). This book is a treasure indeed ❤️ Highly recommended ❤️ If you haven’t read this one yet, please do read it ASAP❤ #bookreview #bookrecommendations #thelowland #jhumpalahiri #bookstagram #thebookstabrews #followformore #bookworm #booklover #exlploremore

📖Book Review📖 Whereabouts by Jhumpa Lahiri I picked this book during my reading slump, and after reading 10-15 pages, I knew the writing is beautiful. This is my first read of Jhumpa Lahiri. I have heard about the author and her books, but when I started reading, I realized what all the hype was about. Or maybe it’s not hype. It’s just how beautifully it’s written that makes you feel connected with it. I felt deeply connected to this book. A woman living by herself, making a house her home, moving out of her parents’ place, living all by herself, days when you enjoy your singlehood, and days when you see your married friends or listen to their stories. You are left with a feeling of loneliness, that something is missing. On the other side, there’s the feeling that it’s so much better to be on this side. As you do things on your own, you observe people around you. In your everyday life, you realize the things you had bitterness with your parents for—somewhere, you’re turning into one of them. Whether you like it or not, you’re becoming a being you disliked growing up. And with all this, an opportunity comes to your doorstep, and you leave for a new land, leaving your old life behind. But leaving the old life is never easy. You take so many memories with you, things you want to do for the last time, and so on. The second paragraph is all about what I feel *Whereabouts* is about, as per my interpretation of it. It’s a must-read on your low days, on the days you don’t know what to read, or when you’re deep in thought. . . "I have been writing since I was a child in order to forgot my imperfections, in order to hide in the background of life. In a certain sense writing is an extended homage to imperfection. A book, like a person, remains imperfect, incomplete, during its entire creation. At the end of the gestation the person is born, then grows, but i consider a book alive only during the writing. Afterwards, at least for me, it dies. " -Jhumpa lahiri (Inother words) Jhumpa, intially started writing in English, as this language came to her naturally. But later she got interested in Italian language, which was completely foreign to her. With time, she learned it and wrote this book originally in italian. It's about her personal journey of living her life through languages. . . . #jhumpalahiri #inotherwords #bookstagram

Hello Readers, Keeping our usual tradition in place, this month also we are announcing a reader's pick within the theme of AAPI authors. Our reader's pick for the month is "The Namesake" by Jhumpa Lahiri. Published in 2003, this book is Jhumpa Lahiri's first novel. "The Namesake" was adapted into a film in 2006, directed by Mira Nair. This book received widespread critical acclaim for its insightful exploration of identity and family. It has been praised for its emotional depth and cultural authenticity. The novel delves into themes of immigration, generational differences, and the search for self-identity, offering a poignant exploration of the complexities of cultural assimilation and personal growth. We will create a seperate chat group for this readalong, so invite your friends who want to join in, even if they are not a part of the bookclub. Our intention is to spread the joy of reading and rant about our favourite scenes together. So the bigger the crowd, the better. The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri . Ashoke and Ashima Ganguli, an unassuming young Bengali couple leave their home in Calcutta to immigrate to Cambridge, Massachusetts in the 1960s. While Ashoke, studying engineering at MIT, is curious and spirited about his new life, his wife is less enthusiastic– wary of all things American and longing for the familiar comfort of her home country, especially after their son Gogol is born. Years later, Gogol Ganguli–named after Russian writer Nikolai Gogol– grows older in the United States, weighed down with the dual burden of his heritage and his odd, unfamiliar name, his parents' love, beliefs and culture anchoring his body to a land across the ocean that he does not even care for. But why was Gogol given such an odd, un-Bengali name? And how does a name carry a history of its own? With its sensitive portrayal of the Bengali immigrant experience, assimilation, multigenerational culture conflicts and conflicting loyalties of ethnic identity, The Namesake–today known as a masterpiece of postcolonial South Asian diasporic literature–made Jhumpa Lahiri an icon of Indian writing in English, putting Bengalis firmly on the 21st century global literary fiction map. **** Jhumpa Lahiri give me your grocery lists. I will publish them if you don't. HOW does this lady who grew up abroad EVERY TIME depict Bengalis so intimately with all our food and songs, our pet names and Durga Pujo, our love of ceremony and crowds, Tagore, political adda, our oddities and joy & all the little things that makes us Bengalis. It's so funny how some people are like Lahiri wants to be white sooo bad she hates Bengalis :/ meanwhile her books are all: what a joy and a pleasure it is to have multiple histories that coexist in their similar and dissimilar joys and griefs. your family history is an heirloom too. Immigrants aren't imposters or inherently less desi. (Gogol The Character Ever.) . I feel like this story is so timeless, as it's not just about diaspora, but also a look at Bengali youth like me, who grew up Westernized and almost ashamed of our heritage, estranged from our parents' culture. READ it. Such beauty. I love being Bengali.

I’m delighted with the books I have bought here in NYC. It’s a nice mix of Italian language books, a French language book, a book of essays about art, a retro NYC book, and Booker International shortlist book. I got most of these from the lovely people at @rizzolibookstore . I would have bought the Italian versions of the Neapolitan series from Elena Ferrante if they had it there. But I am ok with this stack, since it will fit nicely in my luggage. 😉
