I absolutely love the Aunties series. LOVE. IT. In fact, I love it so much I feel a little irrationally protective of it. So much so, that I felt myself getting fired up while reading the negative reviews on Goodreads for it. I love you all, but… this is the 3rd (and final) book in the Aunties trilogy… if you don’t know by now that this isn’t written to be outlandish and not realistic… then that’s a YOU problem, not an AUNTIES problem. You should know by now what to expect when Meddy and the aunties get together for a book. I adore Jesse Sutanto’s writing and I flew through the pages of this book. This series would be a great pick if you’re in a reading slump - although this isn’t a series where you should skip the first two books, you really should read them all in order. I’m deducting a star ONLY because I slightly enjoyed the first two books more… and I think the revelation at the end would have made for a better third (and final) book than this storyline did. While I really enjoyed this book, I REALLY would have preferred and loved to see (on page) what happens after … something I can’t say, because it’s a spoiler… is revealed. What a great ending to such a fun trilogy! The aunties are a hoot and a half! Now that Meddy and Nathan are finally married, they were hoping to relax for Chinese New Year, but being in Jakarta and meeting the family leads to an old flame of Second Aunt’s returning. Not just any old ex either, but one of the triad. A missing deed, a kidnapping, the aunts drugging the caterers, and more shenanigans lead to an eventful trip. Reasons I Recommend: 1) Funny. Laugh out loud situations with this crazy, loving family 2) Second chance romance being the key to it all and 3) Nathan’s absolute love for Meddy and her wacky family. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Quote: Ma leans over and pats him gently on the arm. “Is okay, Nathan, is because you not use to breaking into other people house, ya? I finished reading Vera Wong’s Unsolicited Advice for Murders a few days ago, and this book had me laughing from start to finish. This is the second book I’ve read by Jesse Q. Sutanto. I read Dial A For Aunties in January of 2023 as a buddy read with my best friend, so I was excited to read Vera Wong’s Unsolicited Advice for Murderers. As expected, this was a fun read that had me laughing from start to finish. What I loved: -The Found Family <3 -Vera Wong. She is fierce and witty and says exactly what is on her mind. I would visit her tea shop and sit and talk with her. -Multiple POVs -The cast of characters -The foods mentioned (!!!) “The Good, the Bad, and the Aunties” by Jesse Q. Sutanto is just as chaotic and hilarious as always. I devoured the first book, totally skipped the second one (whoops), and now here I am, diving into the third. And guess what? Meddy hasn’t changed a bit! She’s still riding the emotional rollercoaster, dodging her meddlesome aunties like a pro. Honestly, I kind of get it. Standing up to your family, especially with all the ‘save-face’ drama, takes more guts than a haunted house at midnight. This book made me realize I need to go back and read the second one because now I’m super curious about how Nathan and Meddy met. It’s a blast to read, though sometimes it feels like it’s running a marathon with all that witty banter—it can get a bit repetitive. But hey, Jesse Q. In the final installment of the #Aunties series by @jesseqsutanto, I truly enjoyed the fast paced nature of yet another escapade with Meddy, Nathan, and the aunties! It’s crazy that these stories took place over three years, (especially considering I read them all in the same month), but it was exciting to get to meet these characters yet again, who have never strayed from their core values. With this being the last story, it’s hard to say goodbye to these characters. In fact, I already have a title if there were to be a fourth book! Reading the second book in @jesseqsutanto’s #aunties series was so delightful. When I read the first book, I honestly hadn’t looked too much into the plot, but it definitely spurred me to read the whole series. Watching Meddy and the Aunties just try to get through her wedding without problems was hilarious and I couldn’t wait to keep hearing more. I also appreciate how Jessie spoke to the immigrant experience and how no two families have the exact same story - it didn’t invalidate their experiences. I’m Not Done With You Yet (Jesse Q Sutanto) - Oh the good old bait and switch. I never saw it coming. It was a gasp worthy moment once the identity of the characters was revealed. But that couldn’t save the boreiness of the book. Nothing was really happening. And Jane, man I found her so annoying and pathetic. It oozed off the pages. Nothing really happened and the book just plodded along. Then near the ending, something tried to happen but I feel it was a futile attempt as nothing could save the book by that point. This was your typical school drama plot that wasn’t original or new. JFK and the Unspeakable (James W. Douglass) - I don’t really know what draws me to JFK - probably that his death is such a huge conspiracy and the amount of things he did while in office during a short period of time. I won’t lie - I still don’t truly understand the Bay of Pigs and Cuban Missile Crisis as it is just a little bit too political for me but this book helps explain those somewhat better (could I explain these events to people after reading this book - absolutely not). What this book did do though was convey JFK’s passion at finding peace and trying to do the right thing. One line in the book stated ‘the key to understanding Kennedy’s presidency, his assassination, and our survival as a species through the Cuban Missile Crisis is that Kennedy was turning toward peace. The signs of his turning are the seeds of his assassination.’ Although I liked how this book focused on a brief period of time, I found it disorienting how within the chapters, the timeline would bounce around. *Mini Reviews for May Book Club Books* VERA WONG’S UNSOLICITED ADVICE FOR MURDERERS by Jesse Q. Sutanto Easy 4 ⭐! This was a good, quick read with a murder mystery, found family (my favorite!!), and a very enthusiastic Auntie. It was so entertaining, I loved the characters and their big personalities, I could definitely see myself rereading this one. THE GREAT SPECTACULAR by Fiona Davis Another 4 ⭐! The amount of research that Davis puts into her books is also so impressive! I’m not a dancer, and no way would I ever be tall enough to be a Rockette, but the description of what went into the practices and dances and even their scheduling blew my mind! Of course there were parts that were difficult to read - taking place in the 1950s and all, there were plenty of instances of women not being listened to or being told exactly what to do by the men in their lives. GRR! A good historical fiction though, and I am going to see what other Davis books I need to read next!

⭐⭐⭐⭐. This was a fun wrap up to the Aunties series. I love that Sutanto made this a trilogy only - the main problem with similar cozy mysteries (cough*Finlay Donovan*cough) is that the longer the series goes on, the more unbelievably insane the plots get. This one is ridiculous, of course - stolen land deeds, crime syndicates, and kidnapping - but the characters and hijinks manage to stay charming and silly without inducing too many eyerolls. Overall, this was a funny farewell to Meddy and the Aunties. After a romantic honeymoon across Europe, Meddy and Nathan land in Jakarta to spend Chinese New Year with her extended family. But things go awry when an old beau of Second Aunt shows up and misplaces a land deed that is crucial to a business deal. Meddy and the Aunties find themselves drawn into a decades-long war between Jakarta's most powerful, and possibly shady, business syndicates. Oh hey, a teen romance I actually enjoyed! Well That Was Unexpected manages to avoid pretty much ALL the romance tropes I hate (which is…most of them 😅). This book has: 🌺supportive friends 🌺caring family 🌺no weird backstabby nonsense 🌺healthy conversations Our main character still gets along with her ex! Her bestie isn’t trying to get with the guy she likes! His family isn’t trying to tear them apart! Really, the only conflicts come from a) societal expectations, b) a nosy reporter, and c) the characters’ occasional inability to get out of their own way 😆 Also, I loooved the descriptions of Indonesia! After a lovely, but exhausting weekend, my husband and I recognized that our stress levels were sky high yesterday, but today everyone (kids included) seems to be feeling much better so I’m thinking of today as the real start to the week. Standalone Format: 📘 and 🎧 Verdict: YOU NEED TO READ THIS If you are like me and make a must read list for the summer THIS BOOK needs to be on it! I could NOT stop reading it by around the halfway point. The most interesting and unlikable character narrators, but SO much character development along the way. And being inside the characters’ heads created such a high state of tension and emotion that I knew I had to finish as soon as possible before feeling like I could take a full breath. The writing and storytelling were perfection. One of my very favorite thrillers of the year! Okay that’s all I can say without an ounce of spoilers! Note: I HIGHLY recommend the audiobook version if you can!

⭐️3/5 Picked this up for my June bookclub and was mildly disappointed. It starts with an interesting plot: Vera Wong finds a dead body in her tea shop, however, the police don't find anything suspicious about the death so she chooses to do her own investigation. That being said, it quickly derails. The writing was extremely juvenile and the characters, in my opinion, were underdeveloped and lacked substance. The plot was full of holes and the main character was annoying. Vera Wong (not to be confused with Vera Wang, unless it does, in which case she won’t mind) is the proprietor of a small, struggling tea shop. One morning she discovers a man, a very dead one, in the middle of her shop. In his hand is a flash drive, which Vera so helpfully tucks away before calling the police. What ensues is a cast of side characters who descend upon the shop for very different reasons as Vera, with her shop temporarily unable to operate, finds herself with too much time on her hands. What harm could a little meddling by an older Chinese woman do? I wasn’t sure this book was gonna be my thing: YA romance, fish-out-of-water, half-Indonesian main character, awkward meeting, fake dating. I mean I’m really not the target audience here. BUT I have yet to NOT enjoy a book by Jesse Q Sutanto, so I gave this one a try. Dudes. I accidentally read a third of it in a single day. It is *hilarious*, the main character and her love interest are both super likeable, and I love all the descriptions of Indonesia. Seriously I am rooting for literally everyone in this book. Every scene was a chaotic mess and probably not legal. There was filial piety, tai chi, hiding a body, Indo-Chinese culture, complicated relationships, a mystery, and family drama. Despite the ridiculousness, this was such a fun book and I loved all the antics! *** Women of Good Fortune by Sophie Wan Three friends, Lulu, Rina, and Jane, find themselves planning a heist to steal all the gift money from Lulu’s grand wedding. As the countdown to the wedding begins, we learn about each woman’s motives: - Lulu - reluctance to marry - Rina - a missed promotion and ticking biological clock - Jane - a chance at a life of luxury and a new husband Despite the differing circumstances and personalities, I loved seeing these friends scheme and play to their strengths. This felt like a good mix of Ocean's 8, Crazy Rich Asians, female friendships, and a Shanghai backdrop. Though the heist planning got messy and a little drawn out, I loved seeing the chaos that took place and the ending! The Good, The Bad and the Aunties by Jesse Q Sutanto. This is the third (and last) book starring Chinese-Indonesian-American Meddy, her Ma, and three aunts, dictatorial Big Aunt, romantic Tsi Chi-obsessed Second Aunt, and former singing sensation Fourth Aunt. These four sisters have a love/hate relationship and are pushy as hell but they will also do anything necessary to help each other when disaster hits. In this book, Meddy and Nathsn interrupt their honeymoon to celebrate Chinese New Year in Jakarta with the aunties and their large extended family. Second Aunt's childhood love, Abi shows up to court her with gifts, including red packets to give to the children. Unfortunately one of them holds the title deed to a piece of land promised to businesswoman/mafiosa Julia Child, who takes Nathan hostage until Meddy and the aunties find and return the deed. Unfortunately it was given to a friend of Meddy's niece, Rochelle, who is the granddaughter of Kristofer Kolumbes, a businessmsn/mafioso with a grudge against Abi. When she refuses to return it, the aunties physically attack her and take the deed to Julia Child to reclaim Nathan. Kristofer gets his revenge by kidnapping Second Aunt, and a wild rescue attempt ensues. Sutanto's first two books were funnier, but I love seeing Meddy and her aunties with their family in Indonesia and the way they all interact. The Good, the Bad, and the Aunties by Jesse Q. Sutanto was a wonderful finale to the Aunties trilogy. As with the first two books, I loved Meddy, Nathan and the Aunties. This book takes place in Jakarta as the they travel to celebrate Chinese New Year with their extended family. I thought it was fun to see them get into trouble in yet another location. This time around, the chaos is caused my Second Aunt and the rekindling of her teenage romance. However, her boyfriend is now part of the mafia and accidentally ends up getting Meddy, Nathan and the Aunties tangled up in a feud with his biggest rivals. Overall, this was another solid book. The Aunties made me laugh out loud several times with their antics. I enjoyed how everything came together and that this was a satisfying conclusion to the series. I'm a sucker for a found family novel and this one was so fun! I loved the mystery aspect and Vera was just a hoot! She was cracking me up! To me, it's about the importance of personal and community development. The one person who made everyone's life miserable by not being an honest or kind person, amongst others. Vera Wong’s Unsolicited Advice for Murderers by Jesse Q. Sutanto What a delight! This wonderful book is packed with mystery, humor, love and lots of tea. Q wholesome, funny story which i definitely related to a lot. It centers around a tea house so of course brownie points for that. The magic and healing power of tea is captured beautifully. It talked about how unrealised dreams are one of the saddest things in life. It asked me to be open as life would be so much simpler if everyone simply said what they were thinking instead of beating around the bush. Are you a cozy mystery fan? Cozy mysteries are hit or miss for me, but this one was a HIT!! Vera Wong is a 60 year old Asian widow who lives above her tea shop. She wakes up one morning to find a dead body on the floor of her store. She doesn't trust the cops to do a good job of figuring out what happened, so she takes it upon herself to solve a murder. From there, we are introduced to a list characters who are the potential suspects. I admit, there were quite a few characters and I thought it was going to be one too many, but each developed their own personality and storyline, so it worked for me. And Vera, the MC, chef's 💋!! I absolutely loved her. Like many cozy mysteries, the whodunit element was not a huge surprise, but this book was more about the relationships than the mystery.
