🤝 Meet the Author Event 🤝 Tonight my Daughter and I had the chance to meet Heather Gudenkauf, the Author of one of my favorite Thriller books EVER (The Overnight Guest)! Even with a jam-packed room of people for this small town, she answered so many of our questions with knowledgeable fulfilling answers, and even my little self got to ask her where she gets the ideas for the major plots of her books! While Media was the prime answer, she shared an incredible backstory of how the Slender Man case inspired Before She Was Found, leading to uncanny events during her research that brought it close to home *cue the goosebumps* Learning about her life and the path that led to being a successful Author of 10 Novels was such a grounding experience, reminding me and my Daughter that despite life's challenges large and small, despite the size of a hometown, despite the things we may not be doing very well at; dreams and success are still possible. Until yesterday I've been pretty much incognito here for quite some time. What have I been doing for the past month or so? I finished a book! At 91,744 words and 46 chapters, the first draft is done for Child of Saturnia. While there's lots of things that need to be tightened up, I feel like it works. I like the story, I love the main characters. I will write more about the book in a future post. For now, I'm going to try to not look at it for about a month, then, to paraphrase Neil Gaiman, I will start rewriting it to make it look like I knew what I was doing from the beginning. #wballenart #IowaAuthor #fantasynovel

Like many American families, the Stevens family roots include Native American, those far-traveling Asians who crossed the Bering Land Bridge from Siberia to Alaska and, often following animal trails, spread down through 2 great continents, becoming the "Indian" nations of American history, interacting--and intermixing--with the white, black, and brown people who came later. Also like many American families, the Stevens' roots include frontier folk, each generation born 1 State farther west as the frontier moved toward and then across the Mississippi River. I grew up as an Iowa boy dreaming of Indians, wilderness, and the West, and then going there, following the call in my blood, "a very complicated river of information carrying things you would never believe from generation to generation." Getting a book cover professionally done can be costly. I'm thankful that my husband worked with me to bring my cover to life, but it has been a learning experience for the both of us. Self publishing can be expensive. Sure, I could have saved money in some areas, but with getting this book out and into the world, it already set me back about $800. (Editing, Copyright, ISBN's, etc.) I guess you could say that I have an expensive hobby right now😅 If you can afford to have someone do your cover, great! If you design it yourself, fantastic! GOING BACK TO OUR ROOTS!! Both my husband, Evan Jones, and I grew up in small farming communities in Iowa. I grew up in Dayton, Iowa (population 500) in Webster Country about an hour north of Des Moines. Evan grew up in Williamsburg, Iowa (population 3,350), about a half an hour west of Iowa City on Highway 80. Both of us are lucky to have many hometown friends and family who have supported us, not only in our kidney transplant adventure, but through my debut novel launch. Many friends have read Blood to Rubies in Dayton and Williamsburg. So, it was logical for us to begin our book tour in our home state in our hometowns. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 Medium: Library Libby Audio Pages: 352 Dates read: March 6 - March 15 Genre: Fiction Tropes and themes: poetry, death, dying, grief, love, addiction, coming of age, LGBTQ literature The book deserves to be read more than once. I loved the author’s cadence and random trains of thought. Often times writers try that style and the reader can’t follow. Not the case with this story. Cyrus Shams is a complex, obsessive, but relatable human whose constant focus on his own death drives all his actions and impulses. I attended the DMPL AVID Series tonight and listened to @kavehakbar.kavehakbar describe the ways he interjected himself into the character and how the book could have been well over 1,500 pages. It was very interesting to learn that the first versions of the book started out by introducing the character Orkideh at the beginning but the final product didn’t introduce them until 100 pages in. What a completely different story that would have been. I’m jealous of his students at the University of Iowa.
